Chapter 1:

"My name is Mirai Arashi." A small girl with a round face and grubby hands approached a boy her age. "I'm Shoto Todoroki." The boy responded quietly. He had seen her often. His mother once told him she was to marry one of the boys in their family when they grew up. Although quirk marriages were illegal their two families had been friends for generations.

He shivered remembering that day. Shoto being a product of quirk marriages, the situation left a bad taste in his mouth. When his brother died the Arashi family seemed to have disappeared along with him.

At least, until today.

"This is Mirai Arashi," Aizawa said. The class was completely silent, no one dared to breathe. "She's on a probationary period so-."

"Why is she like that?" Bakugo broke, asking the question everyone was silently asking. Mirai stood on a dolly platform that Aizawa had wheeled in with him. Her face was mostly obscured by a mask like the one Bakugo was put in after winning the sports festival. Her arms rest in front of her bound heavily in chains.

Aizawa seemed surprisingly uncomfortable with the question. Todoroki fought the urge to walk up to her. Her hair, like starlight, fell short and choppy at her jawline. What struck him most were her eyes. Wild, piercing orange and staring right at him. The chains clinked as she turned her head slightly. Todoroki could feel his classmates' gaze turn to him bouncing between the two. "Mirai promise you'll stay put."

The girl's orange eyes flicked to the side, becoming disinterested and half-lidded. With an uncharacteristically frustrated sigh, he began to slowly release her binds. The mask coming off last. The whole time Mirai stood perfectly still. Now she stood rubbing her arms. With slow and precise movements, she stepped off the platform with bare feet moving so Aizawa no longer stood between her and Todoroki.

"Mirai"

Aizawa cautioned. She tipped her head back with a wide complacent smile. Instantly she vanished. Or rather, a beautiful stark white fox stood where she once was. In two small leaps, she landed on Todoroki's desk at the back of the room, furry face inches from his.

Reaching out he scratched under her chin.

"Hello, Mira."

The room was tense as Mirai laid down on Todoroki's desk. Aizawa coughed pulling attention back to him. "Mirai has an interesting quirk. The fox, however, isn't her quirk."

"So she just happens to turn into a fox?" Bakugo gawked.

"Can she actually speak?" Kaminari glanced over her.

"More importantly, do you two know each other Todoroki?" Iida asked, standing as he spoke. Mirai shot up to growl. Todoroki pet her head soothing her once more. "Yes, but sensei… where has she been?"

Aizawa looked over some notes.

"There's a lot of information that is classified. The Arashi family disappeared some years ago. Mirai has only just been found three years ago."

Mirai stood growling at Aizawa. Having enough at this point he activated his quirk as he turned his glare on her. Having no effect, the action was quickly dropped. "If you have something to say speak."

Mirai stopped. As if remembering she could in fact communicate. With a silver shimmer the spot where a fox once stood sat a human with piercing orange eyes. "Can we begin class now, Sir."

Her voice was like a light breeze free but resolute.

Later Aizawa directed Mirai to her dorm room. She didn't have much. The girls tried to approach her but the tension between her and Aizawa could cut clean through Kirishima's quirk. Mirai hadn't said a word since class. Once sentence. Todoroki couldn't help but wonder if she knew what happened to his brother.

Or to himself.

She seemed to wander around aimlessly. Although when he even thought about approaching her she would dart off like a sixth sense was etched into her mind.

"Todoroki, could you help with dinner prep?" Yaoyorozu popped her head around the corner. Eyeing his line of sight, she smiled.

"It won't take long."

Todoroki nodded following behind her to the kitchen. Today Bakugo and Midoriya would be cooking. Even with their punishment over their classmates deemed it fit they cook the rest of the month. They were two of the best cooks after all so Todoroki suspected it was just an excuse to have them cook.

"So how do you know her?" Yaoyorozu smiled. Her hands were busy washing off vegetables and setting them in a colander. Todoroki turned back to his task of chopping. It was difficult to get the slices even. He nearly forgot she asked a question. Not wanting to be rude he sighed to indicate thinking. Maybe it was distress?

Did he really know her?

"Our families were close friends. She was over on a few occasions." Todoroki nodded feeling that was an adequate response.

Yaoyorozu hummed then they fell into silence. What could he possibly offer Mirai other than stand as a painful reminder…? He had no idea what happened. That's what friends did though, right? Catch up after a long time away.
