I do not own the Hunger Games Trilogy.
Luna snow's POV:
I looked at my diamond encrusted watch and nearly jumped at the time. I hurried over to my couch and turned on the television and called for an avox to bring me my finest wine. This wine was made in District 7. Not the cheap stuff from 11.
I turned my attention to the screen to watch and see who will be the next tributes in our next Hunger Games.
I found it so interesting how some tributes could turn from innocent children to bloodthirsty killers. The avox with my wine arrived and I poured myself a glass, staring at my watch at the same time. The little hand turned and struck one. At that same moment my screen buzzed to life.
The lovely anthem of our country brought a small smile to my face as it came flowing out of the speakers and announcing a mandatory broadcast. It was my idea to change the nation's anthem after that traitor Katniss Everdeen almost ruined it. My father had told me all about her and how she would have left our nation in ruins if she hadn't been caught and executed along with all her followers.
I turned my attention back onto the screen where the seal of District 1 had just appeared. I settled in and took a sip of my wine. This was going to be a good show.
District 1: Victoria Hansen's POV
"Vic! Breakfast!" My mother yells from the kitchen. I stretch and yawn before getting out of bed. Then I realise what day it is. I come out of the bedroom in my pyjamas.
"Today is the day!" I say with a big smile on my face. My mother looks over to me and grins. I sit down and start eating with gusto. It was a hearty breakfast: fancy rolls from the market, real eggs, fresh from the chicken and a glass of cow's milk, not the goat stuff from Nancy in the yard.
I look up at my Mom to find that she has already sat down at the other end of the table. We both look at the clock. 12:00 PM. We had one last hour of waiting.
I head into my room to get ready for the reaping. I was going to make my mother proud. I look at the frail walls of our shack. Soon we would be rich. All of my mother's sacrifices would be worth it.
My mother comes in and wraps her arms around me and whispers in my ear
"I'm already proud of you. You don't need to do this if you don't want to."
I look up at her and whisper back "I'm doing this for both of us Mom."
District 1: Mace Gray
The spear impales itself perfectly where the dummy's heart would have been. I look up expectantly and see my father throw another.
"If you were that dummy you would have died." His loud voice carries across the yard. "You need to be more alert, more ready..."
I sigh. I yank the spear off of the dummy and throw it with pinpoint precision at the space directly in between his legs. He stops his rant and pulls the spear from the ground. "Better." he says gruffly and then heads off to the sharpening station to polish it.
I decide to get up and start training again. The throwing knives have always been my weakest spot so I decide to train with them while my father isn't looking. He is a good dad but he expects a lot from me and I don't want to let him down.
I make sure my father isn't looking before I throw them at the speared dummy. Out of the five I threw only three of them hit the dummy and only one hit a vital. I almost stamp my foot in frustration. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed that my mother was coming outside.
I rush to the dummy and rearrange the knives so that they all hit the dummy's chest, head or neck.
"Mace dear, have you seen my knives? I need them for my Advanced Knife Throwing class." She calls out to me.
"Oh… Um I've just been practicing with them Mother!" I see her eyes survey dummy and I hope she doesn't realise that I had just stuck them in.
"Good aim Mace!" I let out an internal sigh of relief. "Now get them out so that I will be ready for my class after The Reaping."
I nod "Yes mother!" And I begin pulling out the knives. I grin to myself at the thought of The Reaping. Since I am only 17, my parents will not expect me to go this year but I will surprise them. This year I will be the victor of the 99th Hunger Games.
District 2: Alana Mason
"Eww Mom, that's gross!" I whine. My mother and her new boyfriend were kissing against a wall. I chuckle a bit as they are startled. He jumps back, blushing profusely.
"Aren't you meant to be training with Matt?" Says my mother slightly flustered referring to my personal trainer.
"He let me go early. Since it's Reaping." I say bluntly. I watch my mother look around for an excuse to be left alone with her boyfriend Jason… at least I think that's what his name was. Mom has been going through so many boyfriends that at some point I just gave up on trying to learn their names.
"Go get your sisters ready for The Reaping." She says after looking at the clock. I give a small huff of indignance before spinning on my heel and slamming the door. The loud noise attracts my sisters to the stairwell. I look up at all of them. "Mom sent me to get you guys prepare for The Reaping." I say.
"Is she with a new dude again?" Says Livia which gets everyone giggling. I look at the clock and realise that if we don't get a move on we would be late.
"Whoever gets ready quickest gets an extra pancake!" I yell. That did the trick I think as I watch my siblings scramble to get to their rooms.
I notice that Keres hasn't moved. I sigh "Just because you're 19 doesn't mean that you don't have to go to The Reaping." I say, exasperated. She grunts and moves along upstairs. Even though I'm not even the oldest I sometimes feel like I have to be the mom in this family.
I go into my room and gather up my clothes that have already been set out for me. I look again at the clock again and thank Panem that we live right next to the town square.
District 2: Nolan Steel
I step into the living room to find my father drunk and passed out over the coffee table. I decide that I should at least make him breakfast before leaving early. I pull out a sack of the tesserae ration and prepare a small loaf of bread for him to eat.
Our kitchen has a perfect view of the Mason family's yard where I can see Alana out with her instructor. I see her grab three knives and throw them at the same time at a stuffed practice dummy. The first hits it's neck, the second it's head and the third in its heart.
I gulp nervously and I feel sorry for her opponent in the arena. Presuming that she was picked. I look down and see that I have been making the bread unconsciously. I stick it in the oven and I hear my father stirring behind me.
"Good morning Father." I say politely. I don't want to give him another reason to beat me. The timer dings and I rush to the oven to pull the bread out. A few minutes later I hand my father the, now neatly sliced, bread. He devours it and scans me with his bloodshot eyes.
"Go get ready. It's almost time for The Reaping." He says with his mouth full of bread. I nod and go back into my bedroom. I look in my closet but the only nice thing I can find is a semi clean shirt and a pair of ratty dress pants. I put them on and my father inspects them.
"Good enough." He says dismissively and starts searching through the pile of trash on the couch. He finds a half empty bottle of alcohol and starts sipping on it.
I stand there unsure what to do. "Father?" I question. He grunts in acknowledgement. "Will I be like Hectra?" He sprays out his mouth full of drink in surprise. He starts shaking and looks at me with pure despair in his eyes.
"We don't talk about Hectra!" He bellows. His eyes begin to tear up as he continues screaming at me. I didn't know that this was going to be his reaction but I guess I asked for it. We had never really mentioned Hectra before but I knew she was real. We had one portrait of her on our crumbling mantle piece. I am brought back to earth to the sound of my father's screams.
I look up and see that he has his, now empty, bottle raised over his head. I realise what he's about to do and I take my chance and run out of the door.
I can hear the glass smash just where my head had been.
