We are the last ones
"The residents in my class… they all thought they would make it and stay here. But then they started dropping like flies… and it was just Torres and I… and now she's gone. Now Richard Webber… the man who got me to where I'm at in my career is deciding to step out of surgery. I thought when it was Torres and I left that we were the best and deserved to be left alone by the others. And now I'm here… all alone." Miranda Bailey just stared out of her office window.
"I know what you mean. My first day I showed up late to the speech Richard always gives. I thought I was totally screwed. That morning I woke up with a complete stranger in my house naked." Meredith says and laughs.
"Grey! I don't need to hear more stories about you and McDreamy's sex life." Miranda quickly scoffed.
Meredith just kept laughing. "I remember that first day I really got to know everyone. The 48 hour shift was really hard on me. Cristina saw me vomit outside after almost letting Katie Bryce die. I told her I would kill her if she told anyone. After the first 24 hours when Derek needed our help I told Cristina I had sex with him. Cristina was my first person. She still is even though we don't talk as much as once a week. I remember the time she, April, Jackson, Alex, and I went to the bar and drank together. The first one to drop was George. God I miss George. He was the best person I knew. He tried to help anyone in need. Maybe that's why he left us so early. George was just too good for this world." Meredith said, her smile fading into a frown. "I feel guilty. I haven't thought about George in years. I can't believe he died over 10 years ago." Meredith said. Miranda had a stray tear roll down her cheek. "George would have made hell of a surgeon had he lived. He was a very hard worker." Miranda said.
" Then Izzie died in Alex's arms. And she walked out on, not just Alex but all of us. I don't have her phone number or email because they have changed. And she doesn't want anything to do with us. And now Alex is with her and has 2 kids with her that he found out about a month ago." Miranda scoffed at Izzie's name each time it was said. " And now Karev. He left us both Meredith. I remember I hated him and his frat boy dumbass attitude." "But he was hurt Bailey. He was like an abused puppy. He was mean and had trust issues, but when you got to know him he was your best friend."
"Cristina also left. She was my person. The one I could tell my dark and twisty secrets to." They both chuckled. "She was there for me through the thick and thin. She helped me in a way no one understood except me. And now she is in Zurich, Switzerland. She is a owner of a cardiothoracic hospital that was given to her by her ex-fiance. Now she is the go to cardiothoracic surgeon in Switzerland. Now Richard is leaving. It's just going to be you and I Bailey. The originals in this hospital since my first day. You were my resident. You were my teacher." Meredith said smiling at Miranda. "Meredith Grey I always knew you would be a great surgeon. But I'm still your teacher. And I will always be your resident. I can fill in some of that void you have. You've experienced more loss in your 42 years of life than a person who could live to be 170. Derek to Addison in the beginning. You had your hand inside a body cavity with live explosive ammunition. You died from drowning for a few hours and was then resuscitated. You saw one of your friends die from getting ran over by a bus to save another life. Izzie walked out on everyone. You watched your husband get shot. Offer yourself up to be shot for him to live and then have a misscarage all in the same day. You survived a plane crash and being stranded in the woods for 4 whole days. You watched your sister die and heard wolves fight over her body as food. You had your 2nd child in a superstorm and started bleeding out. I had to save your life. Cristina left to move 8,000 miles away from here. Derek. Derek got crushed by a semi-truck for helping injured people. He was on life support and you watched him take his last breath. You had his 3rd child after he died. You survived a patient attack and was able to forgive him. You faked insurance for a patient to get them help even though you knew it was wrong." Meredith has tears streaming down her face. "I miss Derek so bad. They say it always gets easier but he was the one love of my life. Deluca hates me right now. He was the greatest 10 years of my life. Even through the devastation and heartbreak he found a way to make it better. I wish sometimes I could just wake up to his strong arms wrapped around me and tell me everything would be okay and flash his signature McDreamy smile at me and smooth my hair back. He was my happily ever after." "You are the last surgeon left at this hospital since I've known from day one. I've known Wilson but you were my child. And now you've grown into a very responsible adult and a well trusted colleague and mother. I'm so glad I met you, Karev, O'Malley, Stevens, and Yang. My life wouldn't be the same without you." She gets up and walks over to Bailey and hugs her. "I wouldn't be here without you Miranda Bailey."
They both leave that night thinking about all the people that they've lost and the people who left them behind. But they both know they will make it through the hardships and move on with their lives.
