Lily sat quietly in the nursery rocking little Harry to sleep. "Go to sleep, my sweet Harry." She started to sing a lullaby and soon Harry drifted off to sleep. Lily smiled as she softly lay him in his crib. She stood over him watching him sleep peacefully. The Potters had been hiding from the Dark Lord and the Death Eaters for quite some time now and it was starting to take a toll on poor Lily. She felt like she couldn't give Little Harry a proper life like she wanted to. She felt like a mediocre mother at that point because of this darkness that was descending.
She pulled her wand out and cast a spell to make the room look like a beautiful and peaceful night sky. This eased her just a bit but not much. How could she ensure that her son would survive if they were attacked?
She sat in the rocker again and thought about when she married her love, James Potter. How did she go from not giving him the time of day to being his one true love and mother to their child? She recalled her first year at Hogwarts she mostly ignored James and his pack of followers. Then one day he just sat next to her and things changed. They started as friends and moved to a couple then got married and had had Harry.
Lilly shook her head and got up and went to her and James's room and sat at her desk. She took out ink, quill, and parchment. She needed to write some last letters since she had a feeling that her vision was about to come true that Voldemort was coming for them soon. With a deep sigh, she dipped her quill in the ink and wrote:
My Dear Sweet Harry,
If you are reading this then it means that your father and I are gone. My vision of The Dark Lord Voldemort killing us came true. We have been hiding from them since before you were born. You were prophesied to be the one to kill Voldemort when you are ready. Harry, we are so sorry we couldn't protect you better and be there to watch you grow up and become the amazing wizard we know you will be. I will always be with you in your heart when you need me. A mother is never far from her child. I feel so helpless right now that I can't make all this darkness and evil go away and raise you the way you should be raised. A happy baby boy in a warm bright open environment. I am sending a second letter to Severus Snape. He is a teacher at Hogwarts and one of my dearest friends and one of your godfathers. I have given him strict instructions to come fetch you after our demise as to continue to keep you safe. I have granted him and Professor McGonagall and Headmaster Dumbledore temporary guardianship until my muggle sister Petunia and her family agrees to take you into her family. I have placed a high-level protective spell on you that no one can break. It is called "Mother's Bond". It will stay with you until you are 17 years old. You can still get hurt but you won't die. Those lullabies I sing to you every night were me reinforcing that spell on you. Here is the spell. Recite it to yourself to strengthen it ok? Make it your nightly prayer.
Earth, Air, Sea, and Wind.
Bless my family and my friends.
Power of love and hope and light.
Protect me onwards through the night.
Guard my home against the things that creep.
Good spirits watch me as I sleep and grow in life.
By fire, storm, earth, and sea, and strife.
As I speak, So let it be!
I love you so much, my dear son. I will always be watching over you and loving you no matter what.
Love,
Mum
She set the quill down and neatly folded the letter into an envelope and sealed it with the Potter crest and set the envelope aside. She then let a flood of silent tears flood out she had been holding in whilst she wrote the painstaking letter to Harry. She covered her mouth gently so she wouldn't wake Harry or startle James and worry him. He was already under enough stress constantly safeguarding the house and such just to keep them safe for another day. He barely slept and was running ragged. After no more tears could come streaming out, she composed herself enough so she could write the letter to Severus letting him know it was time to put her plan in action. She didn't want to send Harry to Petunia but at that point, she didn't know where else to send him to keep him hidden from the Darkness. If she could let Severus raise Harry as he was his Godfather. She never told James she had chosen Severus as a secret godfather for Harry. She once again picked up her quill and grabbed a fresh piece of parchment.
Dear Severus,
If you are reading this, then it means that James and I are going to be dead soon. I need you to get here on Halloween night and take Harry away and keep him hidden and protected. You are his maternal godfather. Yes, James and I agreed that Sirius was his legal godfather. James also chose Remus as his paternal godfather. I need you now more than ever Severus. Please let Professor McGonagall and Headmaster Dumbledore know as well. They may be able to help you. I don't want to send Harry to my muggle sister and her family, but I think that maybe the only safe place for him right now. If I could have you, Sirius, and Remus raise Harry to be such an amazing and powerful wizard. You would teach him so much about potions that he would ace all his exams. Sirius would tutor him in Transfigurations, and Remus would help with spells. You have been my longest and dearest friend. Also don't think I didn't know about your Patronus being a doe. I know your heart is still stuck on me. It makes me blush still that you still love me. Please take care of Harry. Also, our owl, Blaze is now in your care. He has the same caring fiery heart I do.
Love,
Lily
Lily set the quill down and folded it and put it into another envelope, sealed it and went to the bedroom window. She opened it and leaned out, gave a short whistle and leaned back inside. Suddenly, Blaze flew inside, The family's owl. He landed on the footboard of the bed and Lily came over and gave him a gentle stroke on the head.
"Blaze I need you to take this directly to Severus Snape. He will also be your new owner, understand?" Lily stated, looking at Blaze with longing eyes.
Blaze gave a small hoot and nod. He grabbed both the letters into his beak and flew off out the window. Lily gave a small wave as she watched him fly into the darkness of night.
She shook herself out of a trance and composed herself. She walked to the stairs and called down, "James? You still awake dear?"
"Y-yes Lily. I will be right up dear!" James startled.
"This would be the last night we spend together. For tomorrow was Halloween and they were to die by Lord Voldemort's wand. Would Severus get here to grab Harry and take him away? Will my "mother's bond" spell hold against evil?" Lily speaks aloud while pacing the bedroom.
"Lils you ok my love?" James came into the room slightly alarmed.
"Yes, James. Just reality hitting me that tomorrow night is our fated night. We need to spend so much time with Harry tomorrow making memories and putting them into vials for him to see later in life using the Potter Pensive." Lily said.
"I agree. Come here." James said enclosing Lily in a loving embrace.
James whipped his wand out and lowered the lights and summoned up some slow soothing romantic music and led Lily into a slow dance around their room.
"Is this the song from our wedding?" Lily asked
"Yes, it is. It is one of my favorite memories." James grinned.
They leaned into each other touching foreheads. "I love you, James Potter."
"I love you, Lily Potter."
At that moment knowing they were to die the following night and they kissed with such fierce passion that they almost didn't take a breath for a minute. Lucky Harry stirred and whimpered awake and started to cry. Lily and James quickly separated and whipped their wands out just in case and raced to Harry's room. They came racing in and scanned the room. Nothing. Lily went and picked up Harry who was crying still but stopped once nestled up onto his mother. James came over and wrapped his arms around them both.
"I love you, Harry," she then turned to James. "I love you both, James. Never forget that." Lily said.
