Chapter One: The Accident
"SAKUNO!" it was a call for attention, yet it sounded like a mere whisper. What was going on? Why is everything so dark? Where am I? Who's calling me?
A stir, a shuffle, slight movement caught the attention of old tired eyes resting on a chair in the corner of the room next to the bed on her right. Attempting to rid of the drowsiness to focus on the body of the young girl settled on the bed. Ryuuzaki Sumire bolted from her seat to place herself next to her grand daughter.
"Sakuno, dear" she whispers as the young girl stirs in her sleep. "Sweetheart, it's me, your obaa-chan" holding the girl's cold hands.
"O-obaa-chan" whispered the auburn-haired girl as she tries to pry her closed eyes open.
"Oh, thank kami" the older woman trembled. Bringing the hand, she held it up to her cheek and placed soft kisses on her grand-daughters delicate hand. "I thought I lost you".
"Obaa-chan, I..." says the girl. She opens her cinnamon coloured eyes only to see nothing. "I.." she started trembling, afraid.
"what's wrong Sakuno? Are you hurt?" Sumire asks as she scanned the girl. She watched her grand daughter reach for her, however, missing her completely. The old woman's eyes widen at her realization. "No..."
"I can't see. Obaa-chan, I CAN'T SEE!" She started screaming. "Wha-What's going on!? Obaa-chan!" she shot up from her bed to a sitting position, feeling around her. She held her wrist and felt a needle under her skin. "Where am I? What happened?! O-obaa-chan, Please! Tell me what's going on!" she panicked, causing her heart rate to spike and breathing come out in short gasps. Sumire called for the doctor in haste as she tries to calm her grand daughter.
"Shh, Sakuno. It's okay, we're in the hospital. You'll be okay" She says, as she hugged the young girl tightly, soothing her panicked heart.
"Obaa-chan, I can't see" the girl whispers as tears run down her lifeless eyes. Why is this happening to me? Kami-sama, why?
"It's going to take roughly six months for her to completely regain her vision back, so it's best that she stays close to home. Have someone watch over her while in recovery, she must be assisted as much as possible until then" the man in a lab coat stated to the older Ryuuzaki as she listens carefully, nodding every now and then to indicate her understanding. "I'm sorry, Ryuuzaki-san, this is the best we can do"
"I appreciate it doc." She nods appreciatively. Letting out a heavy sigh, she shifted her gaze back to the sleeping figure of her granddaughter. "I should tell her what happened, she deserves to know" The doctor left them to be alone
"Sakuno, are you awake?" She calls out quietly. The young girl shifts slightly and slowly sits herself up on the bed.
"I'm awake obaa-chan." she smiles at no one in particular, hey lifeless eyes focused at something or another, as much as she can if she can see at all. "When are we going home?" she asks as she shifts her head slightly towards the direction of her grandmother.
"You'll be discharged tomorrow morning. I already have most of your thing packed" Sumire studies the young girl's face. Watching her eyes shift every now and then, her hands clenching open and close.
"Good, I miss my bed" the young girl hangs her head low, her hands found a fistful of her sheets on her lap. "What happened Obaa-chan? How did I become like this?" she asked. Sumire released a breath she was holding, expecting the question.
"I'm sorry child. You went to the store to gather up ingredients for dinner as usual. I know you knew what you were doing and where you were going. What I didn't know was what was going to happen. I wasn't there, I had no idea. I was at home, waiting for you to come back when I get a call. You were struck by a car. Y-you were hit and you were sent into the air and when you landed, you cracked y-your head. The doctor said that severe head trauma can cause blindness. That's how you lost your vision" Sumire's voice cracked. "I'm sorry my dear, I wasn't there"
Sakuno was absorbing the information, visualizing what happened as they were told. She let her tears fall as she listened. "Who -"
"Echizen was there" Sakuno's breath hitched at the mention of his name. "He called me."
"Ry-ryoma-kun was..." she started. "He was... Is he okay?" she asks worriedly. Sumire looks at her in disbelief. Here she was in the hospital with no vision, her head wrapped in a bandage, face and body scratched up from the accident and she's worried about the boy.
"He's fine, dear." Sumire smiled sullenly. Always thinking about others before herself. "Rest, child. Tomorrow, we'll be home"
+Sakuno's POV+
I remember going to the grocery store. I decided that we needed extra ingredients for dinner that night and so I volunteered to go. It was close by, just a few blocks away and it was something that I often do anyway. When I got there, I was surprised to see my 'prince'. Echizen Ryoma with his unruly black-green hair covered by the infamous white cap, dressed in his tennis outfit with the matching tennis bag. I guess they just finished practice that day.
"Konnichiwa, Ryoma-kun" I decided to greet him, I didn't want to seem like a snob by just completely ignoring him anyway. Plus, I like the guy, I wouldn't want to miss my chance. "It's rare to see you out" I blurted out. Luckily, I was able to say it without stuttering.
"Aa, I needed milk" He simply stated lifting his hand carrying the gallon of said milk. We both made out way to the register to pay for our items and headed out the door. We were in an awkward silence as we waited for the pedestrian sign to change when the light changed. I saw Ryoma-kun step into the crosswalk and then I heard a loud screeching of tires and honking of a horn. My eyes wide, I did the only thing that I could think of. I pushed Ryoma-kun away so he wouldn't get hit. I turned to see bright lights heading my way then suddenly everything went dark.
"SAKUNO!" was all I heard. They were yelling, but it sounded more like a whisper. I tried open my eyes, everything was blurry. I saw his figure over me, calling out to me, he said my name. I wanted to reach out, but I couldn't move. Everything hurts yet I couldn't feel anything. I smiled at seeing his face, then blank.
Sakuno shot out of bed, panting and gasping for air. She looked around; it was still dark. She squinted her eyes hoping to at least see some sort of image indicating where she may be, then it dawns on her. Right, my eyes are... Letting out a heavy sigh as she lies back down staring at nothing. I wonder how he's doing. I hope he's not hurt. Closing her eyes, visions of the accident come rushing back in front of her. Warm tears fell from her tired eyes as she tries to return back to sleep whispering only one name.
"Ryoma-kun"
A/N: I want to finish this story, but I can't promise. I've started a few stories now and I'm still thinking of how to get to the plot. UGH, this is why I barely write stories. My mind is all scattered.
