Frankie Gaines was asleep in her bed on the first day of her suspension from school for violent acts, when she heard a knock on the bedroom door, which woke her up. "Frankie," said her mother, Dr. Sigourney Gaines, entering her bedroom, smiling, "It's time for you to rise and shine, you don't want to be late for school today. Tonight, it's a big night for you. It's your first real date at the costume dance at school tonight with Cole." Frankie's eyes widened in puzzlement and she replied, "Huh, what, Mom? I thought you said I couldn't go to the school dance, remember?" Dr. Gaines became quite taken aback by this. "Frankie", she asked somewhat concernedly, "What are you talking about? I never said you couldn't go to the school dance. Where would you get an idea like that?" Frankie, now even more confused, replied, "M-mom, don't you remember? I've been suspended for destruction of school property as well as other violent acts. Don't you remember Ms. Hough calling you about it yesterday? Besides, I thought you didn't want me hanging out with Cole in the first place." Dr. Gaines soon lightly chuckled and said quite amusedly, "Frankie, Ms. Hough hasn't called me or Dad at all about any recent conduct violations from you. Also, Dad and I have never said you couldn't hang out with Cole. If anything, we've always been quite fond of him and his sister, Dayton. After all, their mom is a roboticist-in-residence with the National Geographic Society. I don't know where you're getting ideas like that in your head." Dr. Gaines then said in a gentler voice, "Why don't you just get ready for school and try to enjoy your day the best that you can." She soon gave Frankie a warm smile and left after that.
Frankie then got out of bed and got showered and changed for school. She was making her way downstairs when she saw her crush, Cole Reyes, as well as Cole's sister, Dayton, and Cole's best friend and Dayton's crush, Byron Patrick, waiting for her in the living room. "Hey," Byron said smiling, "I've just added new enhancements for Bob so he can do some more amazing stunts. Like to see them at school later?", he said holding up his robot, Bob, to Frankie. Frankie suddenly began flinching and shouting in terror, "Aaaah! Aaaah! Get him away from me!" Byron was very puzzled by this and looked at an equally confused Cole and Dayton before moving Bob away from Frankie. Quite caught off guard, he then asked somewhat downheartedly, "Frankie, what's gotten into you? I thought you liked Bob." Frankie then replied nervously, "I do. I'm just afraid you probably think I might destroy him." Byron then gave Frankie a surprised look and replied very amusedly, "Frankie, where did you get an idea like that? Nothing of the sort has happened to Bob from neither you nor anyone else." Frankie then said surprisedly, "But Byron, you saw for yourself pieces of Bob falling out of my locker yesterday when I was talking to Dayton." Cole then said to Frankie, "Frankie, there was no school yesterday, remember? It was a full day in service, so the four of us went to the mall to hang out that day." Frankie soon got even more confused and asked, "There was really no school yesterday?" Dayton shook her head. "No school yesterday," she replied very matter-of-factly. Frankie then said in a mildly surprised voice, "Oh."
She was about to question things further when Byron suddenly announced it was time for them to head to school. Frankie walked to school with her friends, but deep down inside, she was still puzzled over what was going on." Frankie and her friends soon approached their school and entered as usual when Frankie suddenly started screaming in terror at something that had caught her attention. "Aaaah! Aaaah! Graffiti on the lockers! Graffiti on the lockers!", she was screaming like she was crying for help. Just then, the principal, Ms. Hough, walked out of her office alongside the math teacher, Mr. Manhart, to find out what the commotion was. They soon saw that it was Frankie and they soon approached her very carefully and Ms. Hough calmly asked, "Frankie, what's the matter?" Frankie then replied in a very frightened voice, "Oh, Ms. Hough and Mr. Manhart, I'm so sorry for the graffiti on the lockers saying, 'Robots rule.' I don't know who spray painted it on, but it wasn't me. And I'm sorry for the breaking into everyone's lockers and destroying everyone's stuff. I don't know who did those things, but it wasn't me. Please don't get me in trouble." Ms. Hough soon smiled and patted Frankie's shoulder gently. "There, there, now, Frankie, dear", she said very soothingly. "You haven't done anything wrong. No one has made any complaint, whatsoever, about their lockers being broken into nor their possessions being destroyed." Mr. Manhart also lightly smiled and said kindly, "In addition, Frankie, that so-called graffiti you are seeing isn't really graffiti at all. It's just temporary gimmick paint applied by the robotics classes in honor of Robotics Week which we have every month at Sepulveda High School around this time. Don't worry, it will soon be scrubbed off eventually once Robotics Week has concluded."
Frankie couldn't believe what was transpiring. All of what she thought was supposed to happen was not happening at all. She was about to head for her first class, mathematics, when she saw her academic and romantic rival, Tammy Gilroy, walk by her. She soon braced herself for the usual tauntings from Tammy, when Tammy instead actually smiled at her and said to her very kindly, "Hey, Frankie, I hope you've gotten your studying all completed. The Brain Squad state finals are coming up soon and we're counting on you to lead the team to victory… ooh, I see Cole is with you as well. I always felt the two of you made such a perfect match for each other." Frankie soon got even more puzzled by this. She then asked Tammy nervously, "Tammy, I thought you actually upset about me being in the Brain Squad. I thought you felt I was usurping your position as the smartest girl in school. Also, I thought you actually wanted to date Cole for yourself." Then it was Tammy's turn to be surprised. "Frankie," she asked confusingly. "Where did you get an idea like that? I've never once been jealous of you academic wise at all. In fact, one of my biggest ground rules as captain of the Brain Squad is that 'there is no 'I' in team.' When we're competing in the Brain Squad, we're not just doing it for our own personal glories. We're also doing it to bring prestige to every student here at school, regardless of academic ability. Also, I have never once been jealous of you dating Cole at all. If anything, I'm already in a long-term relationship with chess club member John Travis. In fact, I've never had any sort of romantic attraction to Cole of any kind, whatsoever. Cole and I are just good friends and that's it."
Now Frankie was really getting confused over what was going on so far. She soon entered the mathematics classroom along with Cole, Dayton, and Byron, when Tammy's friends, Lucia Baxter and Makayla Jameson, entered as well. At first, Frankie wasn't sure how Lucia and Makayla would react to her being there. However, soon, Lucia and Makayla instead smiled at her and Lucia said very giddily to Frankie, "Oh, Frankie. Isn't this so exciting? Your first real date at the school dance with Cole." Frankie then said in a puzzled voice, "You mean you guys are happy that I'm with Cole?" Makayla then smiled and added amusedly, "Are you kidding me, Frankie? It's pretty much the talk of the Brain Squad. I swear, you two are more popular than Chenry or Fremmer." Lucia then said to Frankie, "Well, now, Frankie, now that that's all settled. Makayla and I are quite curious about what you and Cole are going to wear for the costume dance." Frankie then got even more puzzled and said to Lucia and Makayla, "Actually, I'm going out to the school dance with someone else, the new student here named Andrew LaPierre." Now it was Lucia and Makayla's turn to be surprised. "Frankie," said Lucia, looking at Frankie like she had two heads. "There is no student here by that name." Frankie then said even more puzzlingly, "Not at all?" Makayla shook her head. "Not at all", she said mildly. "As a matter of fact, Frankie, you're actually the newest student we've had here so far."
Now Frankie had seen all she could take, and she soon ran out of the classroom, screaming very loudly. Lucia and Makayla looked at each other like one of them had said something very out of line. Meanwhile, Cole, Dayton, and Byron soon ran after Frankie to find her and comfort her. They all soon found her at the back of the school outside, crying very heavily. The three of them walked over to her and Cole gently reached his arms around Frankie for a hug as Frankie cried into his chest and Cole rubbed soothing circles around her back and gently kissed her cheek, while Dayton and Byron calmly patted Frankie's shoulders. Pretty soon, Cole gently, but concernedly, asked, "Frankie, you're not really yourself today. What's going on?" Frankie eventually stopped crying and said, "Oh, Cole. I'm just so confused about what's going on with me right now. I mean, first I'm under the impression that I've been suspended from school for destruction of school and personal property, when said destruction, hasn't actually happened and I'm not really suspended, then I'm under the impression that my mom and dad never wanted me to hang out with you, when in reality, they've always been very fond of you, then I'm under the impression that Tammy sees me as her worst enemy, both academic and romantic wise, when in reality, she actually sees me as a valuable asset to the Brain Squad, and, furthermore, only sees you as just a friend, and now I'm under the impression that I'm not going with you to the school costume dance and I'm going out with another boy, only to find out that said boy doesn't even actually exist and that I'm actually going out with you all along. It's like I don't even know what's reality and what's not anymore." Frankie soon began crying again. Dayton then smiled and said, "Frankie, you've probably just had a bad dream last night. We all get them occasionally sometimes." Cole then added, "Yeah, Frankie, you're probably stressed out from so much studying. I mean, you did join the Brain Squad very late in the session." Byron himself also added, "Indeed, you've probably found yourself cramming in the material just to remember it so quickly. My dad always tells me that cramming is a bad idea as it can wreak havoc on your psyche energy and have you running on fumes." Frankie nodded, her loud cries eventually giving way to soft hiccups. She then said to the three of them very gratefully, "You guys make me feel very happy now, thank you." Cole smiled and replied, "Hey, Frankie, we only want to do what's best for you." Frankie then smiled and replied, "I think I feel better enough to make it back to class." Cole then smiled and replied, "Then let's go back to class." Frankie herself smiled and said, "Let's." Cole soon hoisted Frankie back up and the two soon walked back to class alongside Dayton and Byron, as Frankie felt perfectly all right again and was glad to have Cole, Dayton, and Byron by her side in any situation, whether she was engine over a bump, or a friend, in a bit of a slump.
