Prologue - Dark Dreams
The world shook and darkened.
Its smothering darkness blurred at the edges until a flashing, blinding light pierced the heavy black. It glowed with a divine brilliance, and its bright rays told of an ageless wisdom.
Link knew he was experiencing a dream, yet he could not help but shield his eyes as he tried to peer into the changing light. This light spoke with a precise and seemingly distorted voice. However, its almost musical tones rang clear and gentle in Link's mind. It spoke of a tale he had heard countless times, ever since he was a young child.
"This is a tale that you humans have passed down through uncounted generations... It tells of a war of unmatched scale and ferocity, the likes of which would never be seen again.
"One dark, fateful day, the earth cracked wide and malevolent forces rushed forth from the fissure. They mounted a brutal assault upon the surface people, driving the land into deep despair... They burnt forests to ash, choked the lands' sweet springs, and murdered without hesitation.
"They did all this in their lust to take the Ultimate Power protected by Her Grace, the goddess. The power she guarded was without equal. Handed down by gods of old, this power gave its holder the means to make any desire a reality - such was the might of the ultimate power that the Old Ones placed it in the care of the goddess.
"To prevent this great power from falling into the hands of the evil swarming the lands... The goddess gathered the surviving humans on an outcropping of earth. She sent it skyward, beyond the reach of the demonic hordes… beyond even the clouds.
"With the humans safe, the goddess joined forces with the land dwellers and fought the evil forces, sealing them away. At last, peace was restored to the surface.
"This is a tale that you humans have told for many ages, generation to generation... But there are other legends, long hidden away from memory, that are intertwined with this tale.
Now, a new legend bound to this great story stands ready to be revealed. A legend that will be forged by your own hand."
With the echoes of the voice in his head reverberating in his mind, Link's sight faded, and his vision fell to complete black. When he opened his eyes again, the last wisps of a green fire dwindled at the corners of his eyes as viridescent embers dissipated into the same dark black he had only just faded from. And yet it was different, colder.
He looked around in the dark, bewildered. This was no place he had ever seen. Link's heart jumped and began to pump adrenaline into his veins as the surrounding black violently shook with the rising of some menacing, dark creature with myriads of scales covering the length of its towering body. The flinty scales glinted maliciously in the surrounding black. Though still surrounded by darkness, this beast semed to cast a shadow in Link's heart. He could only stare upward in horror as he gazed upon what seemed to him the ascendancy of all evil in the world. It tipped its great head back and loosed a mighty roar from the depths behind its rows of teeth that rocked this world to its core. There was no escape. Until -
That same same piercing light broke the darkness with its faded, flushed hue. Link's eyes stung with its intensity, and he squinted into it, trying to find some object in the luminesce. The dark beast had since been pacified by the appearance of the light, and its massive form swayed heavily as if momentarily stunned.
The light - now a glowing orb above the beast - spoke with the same distorted voice, and it somehow brought Link a feeling of comfort and courage.
"Rise, Link… The time has come for you to awaken… You are fated to have a hand in a great destiny, and it will soon find you… The time has come for you to awaken… Link…"
The words faded as the light's rays constantly glowed and ebbed. Suddenly, the hideous, menacing creature loosed another roar and drove the light out completely. Link sealed his eyes from this terror, and when he opened them, everything was back once more.
Turning about, Link suddenly found himself face to beak with a purple Loftwing bird. He stared at it for a split second before he woke up with a jolt and a pain in his backside, having fallen out of his bed in his Knight's Academy dorm.
It was going to be a long day...
A/N: First of all, I'd like to thank you, reader, for clicking on my story; it brings me a lot of joy to write for other people. Secondly, I'd like you to go to your Wii, boot it up, and play Skyward Sword because it is such an underappreciated game due to the major dislike of its mechanics. No? Then join me as I try to recreate one of the best stories in the Zelda series (motion controls excluded, of course).
I had the idea of doing a novelization of SS long before now, but I never really thought I would execute it. However, over the years, I've played this game countless times. It never gets old for me. It holds a lot of nostalgia for yours truly, and I gain even more insights into it with each play through. Methinks it's safe to say I know it rather well which is why I want to do it's story justice. I will try to portray Skyward Sword as closely as I am able, but I'll season it with a few originalities - just to spice it up. Zelink at least is inevitable :)
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Future chapters will be longer and author's notes shorter. If you really want to see more of this, feel free to follow this story - it really keeps me motivated, knowing that I'm writing content that viewers are enjoying. Any ideas/constructive criticisms/comments, please review to help me better my story. Let's journey together!
Cheers,
+ KVeronicaP
