Adventure: Take Two

Bilbo awoke, expecting the wood walls of his cabin to greet him. By now, he was used to the gentle sway of water that was ever-present under the Elven ship. Yet, his feet landed on solid ground, toes curling in dirt. He had slipped from a tree!

Where was he?

Looking around he realized with a sinking feeling that he knew this forest, even though it had been years since he had last set foot in the foul piece of land. Mirkwood.

How was he here? Was this a dream?

Getting up and brushing himself off, his eyes fell on his hands. They weren't wrinkled and old with age spots. No, these were the hands of a hobbit in his prime. Slowly, realization dawned on Bilbo as he recalled a story his mother had often told him.

"Hobbits often only love once Bilbo," she would begin.

"And they love slowly and softly like all growing things, nurturing the love with their whole being like the Earth," Bungo would add from where he would be sitting on his chair, writing. Sharing a smile, the two would continue with the story.

"Sometimes, a hobbit loses the one they love to unnatural causes. In those rare cases, Yavannah, the creator of all things green, sometimes offers us a second chance at love. Sometimes with another being or sometimes if that doesn't happen…with the same person again. There was once a hobbit lass who lost her beloved to the Brandywire…"

A clinking sound snapped Bilbo out of his memories. He had spiders to defeat, barrels to ride, and a stubborn dwarf king to declare his love to.
