Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

"What can we do to fix this?" That was the question Hermione asked upon seeing her girlfriend of two years sitting on the couch in the near dark.

Lavender shrugged, focused on her fingers which were making intricate patterns on the hem of her dress.

Hermione sighed, her frustration mounting. "Lavender, you have to talk to me! I love you, but I can't fix our relationship alone. I need your help. And until you tell me what's wrong, nothing will be better. I don't want to lose you, but it takes two people to make a relationship work."

"I don't want to lose you," Lavender whispered.

It was so low that Hermione had to strain to hear it. "Then help me help us. You're constantly picking fights with me over the smallest things, and I don't it. What are you hoping to accomplish?"

Lavender finally looked up from her lap. "Everyone I have ever dated, boy or girl, has cheated on me. And I've never liked them half as much as I like you. I guess I'm just waiting for you to get bored with me or find someone else that you like better. It's easier for my heart to make you leave me by picking fights than just biding my time and waiting for the inevitable. At least I'm in control of it."

Hermione walked over to her and stopped when her knees bumped against the couch. "You think I'm going to leave you? I love you."

"You aren't the first person to say that, and yet, they always leave," Lavender murmured in a self-deprecating manner

"They're idiots," Hermione stated with the utmost certainty. "And I'm the smartest witch in my generation. Why would I leave the best thing that has ever happened to me? Where is the logic in that?"

"You'll get bored, or I'll disappoint you. That's what always happens."

Hermione knelt on the floor and cupped Lavender's cheek. "Listen to me. I love you. I've never said I love you before, except to my parents and Harry, and he doesn't count, because I've never meant it before when it came to romance. So if I say it, listen to it and believe it. I love you. With all of my heart. You might annoy me sometimes, but I'm never going to leave you."

Lavender blinked away tears that wanted to fall. "I love you too." She leaned down and pressed her lips against Hermione's who returned the kiss with eagerness.

They lost themselves in each other as Lavender finally let her guard down and started believing that Hermione wasn't going to break her heart.
