For anyone uncomfortable, I'd turn back now because this story's gonna be a little more graphic and darker from what I normally write. I got this idea when thinking about Randall's banishment and fate, and was wondering how the others would react, specifically Mike. I suggest you keep the tissues nearby and enjoy! ~Remorseful~
It was a gloomy and overcast day, with rain in the forecast later on. For the good monsters of Monstropolis, most were either at school or work, with the roads not being too busy thanks in part to the weather. The gloomy weather easily reflected the somber mood of Mike Wazowski, it just wasn't good day, especially for making children laugh.
Mike didn't come in to work, instead, he's out driving down the streets in his car. He told Sulley that he's just got something on his mind and needed to run a little errand, though he didn't disclose the true nature of this errand to his best friend. Alone in his car and driving down the streets, Mike frowned as he turned to look at a white shopping bag in the passenger seat of the car.
Part of him wanted to turn back around and just stay in the bed for the day, but another part of him compelled him to keep driving and reach his destination. He looked back at the bag and sighed, he couldn't believe that he was even doing this. Never in his wildest dreams did he think he would do this, especially for somebody he's held in great contempt. But even so, that was wavering and what he felt now was different.
"Missed work, cancelled a lunch date with my girlfriend, and even gone out to the store to get something for you. Lizard boy, I should just turn around." Mike said to himself, as he shrugs these thoughts aside. "But I guess I at least owe you this."
Randall Boggs. The lizard monster by all accounts didn't deserve anything, but even with that in mind that he was a criminal, was involved in a conspiracy to kidnap children and harvest their screams, and even attempted to murder both him and Sulley, Mike even in good conscience couldn't turn back now.
The drive to the destination wasn't far, but Mike was purposely taking the long way in order to think back on Randall and everything that happened between them. It gave him time to reflect back on things, such as when Randall wasn't consumed by darkness and wasn't just some jealous psychopath. His thoughts brought him to when Randall wasn't evil, but was a kind and innocent monster.
"I can tell we're gonna be best chums. Funny how that worked out, eh?" Mike remarked to himself, sighing sadly as he remembered his time at MU and when he first met Randall, who would become his first best friend and ultimately his worst enemy.
To see Randy transition from this shy and kind nerdy monster to a psychotic and hateful creep was heartbreaking. Mike couldn't even badmouth Randall without feeling horrible, a heavy weight in his chest just came whenever he spoke ill of the purple lizard monster, even if it was warranted. The lizard was a selfish jerk and a criminal, he didn't deserve any kind of kindness or compassion, but Randall's fall to darkness wasn't his fault.
"Even jerky psychopaths aren't the worst creatures in the world, I guess." commented Mike, looking back at the shopping bag, before putting on the brakes and stopping right at the spotlight. "You were still a creep though." He added, reaching out and grabbing his wallet.
Opening it, Mike took out a photograph of him and Randall, studying out on the campus grounds, with the lizard handling the scare cards. Sighing sadly, he looked at the happy and bright expressions on the teenage lizard, seeing just how innocent and kind he was before it all went downhill for them.
"I should've been a better friend to you, Randy." whispered Mike to the photo, sniffling as he felt tears begin to form in his eye. He hadn't used the nickname in years.
His friendship was Randall was one of his fondest memories at MU. Randall was shy and timid but kind, he was a cute cupcake baking teenage monster that wore large, purple rounded glasses and just had a big smile on his face. He was nervous, but he admired Mike for his confidence. They were great friends and roommates. Seeing what happened afterwards almost pushed Mike to tears.
However, his walk down memory lane was interrupted by the blare of a horn being honked by the driver on his rear. Seeing the light was green, Mike flipped the rude driver off and sped down the road, grumbling before placing the photo on his dashboard and continuing to his destination.
"If you were here, I bet you'd put that monster in the hospital for honking the horn like that." remarked Mike, thinking of how Randall would handle rude driver's on the road and chuckling at the thought.
Back to his thoughts, Mike remembered how Randall desired to be accepted by the 'cool kids', eventually joining Roar Omega Roar. Their friendship ended when the prank happened, though perhaps their friendship was long dead before that. He was too focused on himself and his studies and he didn't take the time to really get to know Randall, instead probably hurt the poor lizard monster during their time at college.
"Why did I have to become such an egocentric and selfish idiot? Why couldn't I have become a better monster before getting thrown out?" whined Mike, groaning in frustration as he thought back to the good times he had with Randall, before he abandoned him for Sulley.
He couldn't blame Randall for hating him. Instead of spending time with him, he focused on himself and spent his whole time at college trying to be something he wasn't, even nearly getting himself killed in the human world because he was so full of himself and in denial that he wasn't scary. After all, he and Sulley also ruined his cupcakes at the party, humiliating him and preventing him from making friends.
Mike lamented on this. It was as if fate had played a cruel joke on Randall, he was alone and with no friends, became a criminal and got banished to the human world. The feeling was sickening, thinking back to when Randall was happy and had a tray of delicious cupcakes, to nearly attempting to harm Boo using the Scream Extractor.
At the dormitories, Mike got the key to his dorm, room 319. He's already been told his roommate his arrived and he's a Scaring major himself, which excited the young cyclops at having a best friend majoring in the same filed.
As he walked down the hallway to his dorm, Mike tried to think of the best way to greet his roommate. "Hello, I'm your roommate. Ugh, that's too bland." Mike groaned, looking down as he shrugged. "Don't force it. Just let it happen."
Reaching his dorm, Mike brightened up and smiled. "Your lifelong best friend is right behind this door." smiled Mike, taking a deep breath and opening the door.
Seeing the silhouette of a reptilian monster with eight limbs and three fronds, as the figure looked towards the door, eyes squinted. Mike gasped at first. The lizard monster quickly gets on all of his limbs and scurries over towards the door, before rising up and greeting him with a big friendly smile.
The figure revealed to be a cute teenage purple and blue lizard monster, with big shimmering green eyes through large, rounded purple glasses. He had a big friendly smile on his face, his fronds perked up.
"Hey there. I'm your roommate. Name's Randy Boggs, Scaring major." Randy introduced himself, grabbing Mike's hands with all four of his in one heck of a handshake.
Surprised, but chuckling at his roommate, Mike beamed up and introduced himself to the lizard. "Whoa. Mike Wazowski, Scaring major." He introduced himself, smiling at the happy lizard.
"I can tell we're gonna be best chums, Mike. Take whichever bed you want. I wanted you to have first dibs." revealed Randy, before the noise of something crashing spooked him into disappearing, leaving only his glasses visible. "Ah!"
Mike gasped as he witnesses Randy disappear before his very eye. "You just disappeared!" He said in surprise. Randy could disappear? What a handy ability to scare children with.
Becoming visible and appearing back, Randy looked a little embarrassed with himself. "Sorry." replied Randy, adjusting his glasses. "If I do that in Scaring class, I'll be a joke." He frowned.
"No, it's totally great! You gotta use it!" Mike boasted, impressed by Randy's abilities. His new best friend's a natural.
"Really?" asked Randy, a little flattered by Mike's words of encouragement and also giving him a bit of a confidence boost in himself.
"Yeah, but lose the glasses. They give it away." replied Mike, heading into the dorm room to unpack. He was right, the glasses do give it away.
Taking the advice, Randy removed his glasses and blinked a couple times, his vision going blurry. Taking a moment to get used to it, he looked around his surroundings, his eyes squinting in order to see.
"I never should have told you ditch those." sighed Mike, thinking back to how things were before fraternities and the Scare Games. It was a beautiful time when they were pals, the best of pals.
Randy's glasses were a defining part of the nerdy little lizard monster. True, they did give him away when he disappeared, but he needed them to see and in his opinion, the trade-off wasn't worth it, especially with what had transpired later on. Mike knew first hand the issues of having poor vision, hence why he wore a contact.
"Oh, why did you have to turn to darkness? And why couldn't I have just let things go and tried to reconnect with you?" ranted Mike, angry with himself for failing Randall and also blaming himself for all that happened to his former best friend.
Randall just wanted to be accepted and not be looked at as a joke. But what happened? Sulley got kicked from Roar Omega Roar for his poor grades and Randall ended up taking his place, finally becoming one of the 'cool kids', though when Randall waved at him wearing that red jacket, he saw a hint of sorrow in the lizard monster's facial expression and his eyes, it was as if he was saying goodbye to him.
Sniffing and fighting back the tears, Mike was in a losing battle. Tears came down his cheeks and landed on the seat, as he continued driving, sniffling as he thought back to all the good times with Randall. Acing their assignments, studying, watching movies and eating junk food, playing games, all the happiness and fun they had whenever they spent time together. To Randall being a snarky and selfish jerk, the hostilities he had with him and Sullivan, the bitter rivalry, and finally, the Scream Extractor conspiracy.
Mike gulped and whimpered as he remembered Sulley grabbing hold of Randall's body to prevent his escape, commenting on Boo no longer afraid of him and that he's out of a job. Randall gulped when he heard that.
"I never should've banished you, Randy... I'm so sorry lizard boy..." Mike broke down, keeping his eye on the road, as he cried at what he done.
Randall was begging and pleading for mercy, but Mike just opened the door and Sulley threw him inside, banishing the lizard monster. They had a laugh over it, with Sulley destroying the door to ensure that he wasn't able to return ever again.
Banging his hand against the steering wheel, a voice screamed within Mike's head. He shouldn't have banished Randall, he and Sulley are to blame for what happened. By throwing the pleading lizard through that door, he pretty much turned his back on his former best friend and didn't look back at all. He screamed in pain for doing such a thing, Randall didn't deserve it.
The aftermath that came while beneficial was sickening at the same time. Randall banishment and Waternoose's arrest, followed by the discovery that laughter is a sustainable and alternative energy source and more powerful. Sulley became CEO and brought about a change not just in Monsters Inc., but for all the energy companies, as he with Mike's help put the company in a new direction, now the monsters make children laugh and gather ten times as much energy now. Everyone was happy. Fungus was now happy and working on the Laugh Floor, making children laugh. The company was profitable, the energy crisis was over, and Mike was top comedian.
Randall's banishment seemed like it was the best thing to ever happen to Monstropolis. But for Mike, it was heartbreaking. The guilt was made even worse when he met Rex Boggs, Randall's nephew. The bouncy and lovable little orange squint could melt any monster's heart, Mike and even Sulley frowned when Rex approached them and asked where his uncle was.
"Poor Rex. He still asks where his Uncle Randy might be..." gulped Mike, more tears falling as he sniffled. "Even though he needs to know, I can't tell him because it'll crush him."
Rex adored and admired his uncle, loved him more than anything. He knew Randall worked as a Scarer. He was an awesome monster and really can frighten kids and even other monsters easily. So could Sulley, but Rex thought his uncle was much cooler than Sulley was. He wanted to be like his uncle when he grew up.
Poor Rex would never get the chance to see his uncle again. It made Mike sick to his stomach thinking about how sad this little monster was at not knowing what happened to his uncle.
"Randy... I'm so sorry. I really am..." sniffled Mike, finally reaching his destination and putting the brakes on, as he parked his car and turned the engine off.
Mike didn't immediately step outside. He spent a couple minutes in his car to finish up crying and dry the tears with some tissues. Grabbing the photo from the dashboard and grabbing the bag, he took a deep breath and exited the vehicle. This wasn't going to be easy.
"Alright, be strong, Mike, even if lizard boy hates your guts, you gotta do this." Mike said to himself, reaching into the bag to make sure he brought with it, letting out a relived sigh as he found it.
Arriving at the Monstropolis Cemetery, Mike felt his heart sink as a chilling wind blew past him. He shivered a bit and took another deep breath, taking out a freshly cut bouquet of flowers that he gripped tightly in his hand. He slowly approached the metallic gate of the cemetery and pushed the doors open, as they groaned and creaked in eerie fashion, as the small green monster entered.
It was chilling and honestly haunting coming to a place like this, but this was where he needed to be. He had abandoned Randall before, but he wasn't going to abandon him now and at least try to make peace with the lizard monster, it was the least he could do. Randall deserved it. He wasn't some criminal psychopath, he was a monster just like him and even he needed someone to be here.
He arrived at a grave and tried to fight back the tears, but they fell anyway. Feeling his lips quivering and the flowers shaking in his hand, Mike knelt in front of the grave, arranging the flowers as nicely as he could in the pots and then putting some on the ground beside the headstone, looking intently at the headstone and sniffling as he cried.
"Well, I'm here. For all that happened, for ditching you for Sulley at college to becoming one of your enemies at work, and everything else that happened with Boo. I figured I can at least be here for you now, even if you hate me with every fiber of your being and want to strangle the life outta me." Mike chuckled weakly, frowning.
A gentle breeze blew by him. Mike tried to organize himself the best he could, thinking of what to say next.
"I hate what happened. Believe me, I hate myself for banishing you. I don't blame you if you hate me and want me dead." said Mike, looking around anywhere besides at the grave. "But I want you to know that I regret it. I wish I never opened that door and could've stopped Sulley from destroying the door."
Mike began chuckling and fidgeting his hands, frowning as he sighed sadly. "I know you tried to kill Sulley and me, but I forgive you for it. I saw that evil grin on your face when you were gonna kill us, but I hope there was still some remnant of the old Randy somewhere in all that darkness. I hope you can find peace at last."
Even though Randall was involved in a criminal conspiracy, Mike wished there was another way things could've been resolved. The banishment was illegal, but Roz stated that Randall would've been banished regardless, especially given the attempted murder charges. Whatever happened that caused Randall to become what he became wouldn't matter, he committed serious crimes and the CDA wouldn't show leniency, especially when the monster in question was willing to harm and murder not only a human child, but two co-workers out of jealousy.
The winds continued blowing, a little faster as Mike stared up at the headstone and at the cloudy sky. He began tearing up again as he didn't say a word, reaching out and putting his hand on the headstone. "I guess you say that's the winds of change, right? I can hear them now, I suppose..." sadly remarked Mike.
Shuffling a little closer to the headstone and looking down, tears falling and hitting the ground near the grave. "You know, even though we became enemies and stuff, I'm glad to have at least got be your best chum. You were a great monster, leagues above even so-called elites like Sulley and Johnny, and you were such a kind and friendly monster. I was happy to have met you back in college. I was just a selfish, egotistical beach ball, but I treasured the bond we did have." whispered Mike, his eye meeting the headstone. "I wish I could've gone to you, talked to you after the Scare Games, reached out and put my hand on your back to let you know it would be okay."
Shaking himself, Mike reached into the bag and took out a pair of purple large, rounded glasses and smiled a little. "I must admit that I did steal these from you. When you ditched your glasses, I kept them. I don't why. Maybe I just kept them as a souvenir or as a reminder of the monster you were. I wish I never told you to get rid of them. Yeah, they gave you away and whatnot, but..." Mike trailed off, before clutching them firmly. "They look adorable on you. There I said it. I always thought you were a cute monster, the nerdy personality and the cupcakes added onto that factor. But you were scary. You were scary. You were ten times the monster I'll ever be. I might be good looking, but I'll admit you were the better looking monster than me." Mike admitted, wiping away some tears with some tissues.
Placing the glasses down beside the headstone, Mike reached into the bag and took out the photo, along with a photo album titled 'MU Memories', as he flipped through several pages, coming across several photos of him and Randall during their time at college, all the happy and fun times they had together, as he ran his fingers along each page, sniffling as he looked at the photos.
He stopped at a photo of them embraced in a hug, it was their first and only hug. Randall was being bullied and Mike came to his aid, calling the jerks out and defending the lizard, commenting on how ignorant they are and that Randall's more of a monster than anything of them could ever hope to be. Randall with joyful tears in his eyes, embraced Mike in a hug, as the smaller green monster returned the embrace and smiled.
Sniffing and letting his tears fall on the pages, as he shook himself. "I wish we could've stayed best chums... Have more hugs, more time spent together. It's been two years now..." tearfully cried Mike, reaching his hand out, trailing a finger on the second date engraved, the official date of Randall's death. Of course, it could've been months earlier for all he knew, nobody really did know, it was simply the date his body had been discovered.
Horrifying images flashed through Mike's mind of that day. After months of searching they had finally found the general location of the door they had banished Randall through and destroyed. Hoping he hadn't wandered too far, a search party was assembled to look for him. At Sulley's request, he, Mike and Fungus were allowed to join the CDA agents in their hunt for the reptilian monster.
Mike had been the first to discover the body. It was almost completely unrecognizable as the monster they had banished through the door. Randall was broken and bloody, in a state of decomposition, with several limbs twisted and contorted, chunks of flesh were missing where he'd presumably been feasted on by the local fauna, his scales were no longer a vibrant purple but almost grey in color, and the smell... That horrible, putrid smell...
He vomited. Mike had violently puked his guts up at the discovery and he began shaking and screaming in denial afterward, almost having a mental breakdown in the human world. It might have been the smell, the sight of the mangled body, or the realization of the consequences of his actions. Sulley had a killed monster and he had played a role in the lizard's demise. Maybe not directly, but their actions had led to the death of Randall Boggs.
Upon autopsy, the coroner noted severe head trauma and skull fractures, likely the result of being struck by a blunt instrument, possibly a shovel. The exact cause of death wasn't known, but it was assumed that he died either by blunt force trauma to the head, or eventually succumbed as a result of his injuries or blood loss. The time of death couldn't be determined, though some speculate Randall was killed shortly after being banished and thrown out like garbage by the humans.
Mike couldn't forgive himself. He was a murderer, he and Sulley were responsible for the murder of a co-worker. His former best friend was dead, thrown through a door by his new best friend and killed by the humans.
He hated thinking about it. The pain was unbearable, it hurt whenever he thought about it. But he couldn't stop thinking about it either. Two years have gone by and he's still haunted by the discovery and blames himself for it.
Breaking down again and hugging the glasses close to his body. He sobbed and cried his eye out, with his sobs being all that was heard in the graveyard beyond the gentle breezes that blew through. He knelt up in an attempt to stand only to collapse forward, hugging the headstone as his tears pelted it.
"Randall... I'm sorry... I'm sorry for everything... I didn't mean to kill you... I wish I could take it all back so you could be alive... I want you back... Please come back... Don't be dead... Please..." sobbed Mike, hugging the headstone as if he were hugging Randall.
Mike continued sobbing on and on for a while. He couldn't bring himself to leave, not yet. Leaving now made him think he was even abandoning Randall in death. Even if Randall was gone, he wasn't going to leave him alone, not this time.
There was a darkness inside Randall that he couldn't escape and in the end, it destroyed him. But even now, Mike hoped that Randall was at peace, no longer swallowed by the darkness, but was happy, was free and no longer suffering.
"I failed you as a friend... I'm sorry for it all, Randy..." whimpered Mike, too broken and depressed to move, as he cried and cried. "Randy... I'm sorry, my old chum..."
Randall was gone. No amount of begging and pleading would bring him back, no amount of crying would make him feel better. Nothing would ever be okay. The pain and grief would haunt him for the rest of his life. He only prayed that once his time came, he would be forgiven and see him again.
The end.
This was tough to write, especially at the end. I've never written something like this before. Randall might've been a villain, but even though he's done wrong, I still sympathize with him and wish things could've gone differently. Darkness may have taken him, but I hope that if he's truly gone, that he's no longer consumed by hatred and jealousy, but that he's free and able to live free of suffering and know peace. I should stop typing now, I'm starting to cry... Let me know what you think and I'll see you in the next story. RandallBeast19, out!
