"TAKE COVER!" Kate yelled as shots were fired in the direction of Hammersley, they had been chasing a FFV who had been illegally dropping lobster pots, Hammersley had boarded their boat and the owner of the boat became quite angry and started shooting at them.
Kate had given the orders for the RHIB's to retreat back to Hammersley as they took fire at the boat, everyone ducked for cover as glass was sent flying around everywhere and the controls were getting hit with bullets. Kate fell backwards down the stairs leaning against the door she could feel something wasn't right but ignored it because of the adrenaline running through her she made her way back up to the bridge and reached for the radio
"Typhoon Aim at Target!" she yelled
"Aimed at Target Ma'am!" Spider and Bomber yelled back
"Fire! 3 rounds across the bow!" Kate said as Spider started shooting at the enemy ship. Hammersley had managed to disable to enemy boat
"Dutchy insert, insert, insert" Kate said through the radio as the RHIB stormed full speed ahead at the FFV
"Swaine, 2Dads you take the left, Ro you follow me" Dutchy said as they made their way onto the boat
"Navy, show me your hands!" Swaine yelled as they cornered a guy who was reloading his gun, Dutchy and Ro cornered 2 other guys who were reloading their machine gun
"Navy! Hands behind your back now, Ro cuff them" Dutchy said as he kept his gun pointed at them while RO cuffed them.
"Swaine?" he said through the radio
"We've got one person here Dutchy" he said answering back as they made their way to the RHIB
"Ma'am we've apprehended the men there were 3 POB on board coming back to Hammersley now" Dutchy said through the radio as Kate watched on from the Bridge
"Copy that Dutchy, see you back on board" Kate said placing the radio back down and looking at the damage on the bridge.
"Charge, what's the damage?" Kate asked making her way over to him as he assessed the electronics
"There's some damage but hopefully 2Dads will be able to fix it" Charge said looking carefully at Kate
"Are you alright Ma'am?" Charge asked as he watched Kate's face go pail.
"Yeah, continue on…" Kate said as she turned around as Spider and Bomber made their way in.
"The RHIB is being loaded now Ma'am" Spider said
"Good, Bomber you and I will go and meet Dutchy, Spider you stay here and help Charge" Kate said as she followed Bomber down the stairs.
Kate and Bomber watched as Dutchy moved towards them with the men off the FFV
"Dutchy, take them to Auster I'll get onto NAVCOM" Kate said looking angrily at the men.
"Ma'am how's the bridge?" Swaine asked as 2Dad's, Bomber and Dutchy escorted the men to Auster.
"Well it's pretty badly damaged Glass everywhere and the electronics are shot, when 2Dads is finished with the men send him to Charge on the bridge to have a look" Kate said as she gripped her side in pain
"Ma'am, are you okay?" Swaine asked noticing how pail she was.
"Yeah, I'm fine…" Kate said smiling weekly at him.
"You check everyone on the bridge and I'll go inform NAVCOM" Kate said heading inside
"Yes Ma'am" Swaine said following behind her.
When Kate got inside her cabin she made her way into her bathroom taking off her DPNU's she noticed there was blood all over her white undershirt slowly lifting it up as she hissed in pain she reached for a towel and carefully wiped away the blood. Bullet wounds, she had been shot she could only count 2 but she knew with that amount of blood there had to be more pushing the towel on her abdomen she hissed in pain. Wrapping the towel hard around her waist she changed her shirt and put on a clean pair of DPNU's as she took a seat and rang NAVCOM.
Mike was in his office going through some paperwork when there was a knock on his door
"Sir, phone call for you online 3 it's the CO of Hammersley" the young man said
"Thank you" Mike said as he reached for the phone
"Kate, how's Patrol?" Mike asked confused as to why Hammersley would be calling when they weren't due back in port for a month.
"Hammersley needs to head back to Port for immediate Repairs" Kate said holding her side as she spoke through the phone
"Is everything alright?" Mike asked concerned
"We were chasing after a FFV and they took fire upon us Sir, the electronics are shot and we're holding 3 men down in Auster"
"Was anyone hurt?" Mike asked worried
"No Sir" Kate lied
"The bridge is a mess and it's a safety hazard with all the glass"
"Alright bring her back to Port, eta till you reach Cairns?" Mike asked
"About 7 hours Sir" Kate said feeling a little uneasy
"See you when you get back to Port then" Mike said smirking through the phone
"Yes Sir I'll see you when we get back to Port…" Kate answered as the line went dead.
Kate made her way up onto the bridge, as everyone was cleaning up the mess and 2Dads was taking a look at the electronics
"How are they 2Dads" Kate asked making her way over to him
"Not good Ma'am" he said as she approached him
"Are they fixable?"
"Possibly but it could take up to 2 weeks to fix" he said seeing the disappointed look on her face
"No worries, I've told Commander Flynn that we are on our way back to Port so once I've met with him after we dock I'll let you all know how long we'll be on shore for" Kate said as everyone stopped what they were doing to listen
"How long do you think Hammersley will be getting repaired for?" RO asked
"Not exactly sure could be weeks, but like I said I'll let all of you know" Kate said holding her side, Swaine made his way over to her as everyone got back to cleaning up the broken glass.
"I'm fine Swaine" Kate said knowing exactly what he was going to say, Kate moved to make her way down the stairs towards the galley, Swaine turned to Charge who was helping 2Dads
"Charge, where was the CO when Hammersley was getting fired at" he asked concerned
"She was standing near the radio, she got knocked back and fell down the stairs" Charge said watching Swaine's face change
"Did she seem injured or unusual after she fell?" he asked
"She was a little pail but insisted she was fine" Charge said watching as Swaine turned towards the exit
"I'm just going to check on her" Swaine said walking down the stairs towards the galley, as he turned the corner he noticed Kate lying unconscious on the ground
"CHARGE!" Swaine yelled as he dropped next to Kate to check her pulse
"Swaine?" Charge asked as he rounded the corner with 2Dads
"What's happened to the CO?" 2Dads asked looking down at Swaine
"She's unconscious, Charge help me carry her to the wardroom" Swaine said as Charge moved to help him
"2Dads get a bed ready" Swaine said as him and Charge carefully picked Kate up.
Swaine and Charge carefully placed Kate down on the bed as they did she let out a small groan, Charge noticed blood on his hands as he pulled away from putting Kate down
"Swaine!" he said holding his hands up to show him.
Swaine frantically searched Kate from her head downwards when he spotted Blood on her DPNU's,
"Charge help me take this off" he said slowly lifting her up as he pushed her shirt off he noticed a massive patch of blood on her undershirt
"Sorry Ma'am" he said as he grabbed a pair of scissors and cut away her shirt he noticed the towel she had wrapped around her waist as he cut through that he noticed the blood kept coming.
"Charge is it possible that she got hit, when the bullets were fired at Hammersley?" Swaine said he threw her shirt and the soaked towel in the bin
"I don't know it's possible, she was in the direct firing line it could be" Charge said staring blankly at Kate's pail face
"I knew there was something wrong, bloody hell Kate why wouldn't you tell me!" Swaine said to himself as he started cleaning the area where the blood was his eyes widened
"2Dads get RO to call for an immediate Medivac and get someone to call Commander Flynn tell him what's happening" Swaine said as 2Dads raced onto the bridge
"Charge I'm going to need your help, Kate has been shot I can't see how many times' but it's pretty bad if I don't get it under control she could go into shock" Swaine said as he grabbed Charges hand and placed it on Kate abdomen
"Keep pressure on it" he said as Charge pushed down on the wound.
"The Medivac is 20 minutes away Swaine" 2Dads said as he rushed back into the ward room
"Dammit! Alright we're going to have to try and control the bleeding and keep her stable until then" Swaine spoke to soon; Kate's body began to violently shake as Charge tried to keep pressure on her abdomen
"Swaine!" Charge yelled as Kate's body just stopped shaking, he reached over and checked her for a pulse
"2Dads I'm going need your help, I need you to do mouth to mouth while I start compressions" Swaine said throwing him a devise to put over Kate's mouth. Swaine placed his hands over Kate's chest as he started Compressions
"Come on Kate! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 anything?" he asked as 2Dads did mouth to mouth
"No pulse" he said as Swaine continued to do compressions
"Come on Kate!"
"Still no Pulse Swaine"
"COME ON! 1, 2, 3, 4"
"I'VE GOT A PULSE! I've got a pulse!" 2Dads said interrupting Swaine,
"Oh thank god" he said resting his head against the table.
"Swaine, we need to get this bleeding under control" Charge said watching as the bleeding wasn't stopping
"I can't remove the bullet's, we don't know how many time's she's been hit so were just going to have to get the bleeding under control" Swaine said rummaging around in his kit and grabbing some more gauze, the Medivac arrived just in time to fly Kate to the hospital, she had lost a lot of blood and had gone into cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital.
Mike was waiting at the hospital as they wheeled Kate in towards theatre
"Kate!?" he yelled as he saw them bring her in he couldn't help but cry at the sight of her, she was so pail, he placed his hand on her she was so cold
"Sir, I'm sorry we need to get her into surgery now or we could lose her" the doctor said trying to push Mike out of the way
"I'll be here when you wake up Kate, I love you" he said leaning down and placing a kiss on her forehead before they wheeled her towards the operating room.
Mike had been waiting for 8 hours since Kate had been brought in sitting in the waiting chair he spun the ring around on his finger as he tried to hold back the tears, the crew had arrived at the Hospital an hour ago after Hammersley had docked.
"Sir?" Swaine said as he made his way over to him
"No news is good news right?" Mike said trying to put on a brave face
"Of course" Swaine said going along with it. Just as Swaine was about to say something the doctor came out and made his way over to Mike and the crew
"Mr Flynn?" the doctor asked looking between Mike and Swaine
"Yes?" Mike said stepping forward
"Your wife is doing well, we managed to stop the bleeding, she had um been shot 5 times we recovered 3 bullets from her abdomen but couldn't find the other two however we did find 2 exit wounds" the doctor said looking at Mikes expression
"Can I see her?" he asked hopeful.
"There's something else you should know" the doctor said a little uneasy
"What?" Mike asked scared
"She went into cardiac arrest twice, we managed to revive her however she's currently in a Coma"
"A coma!?" Mike said confused
"We believe it's her body's way of dealing with the trauma, were not sure when she will wake up but is in a stable condition at the moment" the doctor said trying to give Mike some hope.
"Can I see her now?" Mike asked
"Yes I'll take her to you, but only one at a time" he said as Mike turned around to look back at the crew
"Go Sir, keep us updated" Swaine said as Mike smiled weakly and turned to follow the doctor to Kate's room.
Mike slowly made his way into Kate's room, as he moved past the curtain his heart broke seeing Kate lying there with machines coming out of her in all directions.
A tube was down her throat helping her breathe, Mike reached for the chair near the window and pulled it next to Kate's bedside
"God Katie" he said sitting down as he grabbed her hand and interlocked it with his, brushing his finger over her wedding rings and he softly kissed her hand
"I'll be here when you wake up Kate, I'm not going anywhere I love you so much" Mike said looking up at her as he brushed a piece of hair behind her ear he softly moved up and kissed her on the forehead, he wasn't going anywhere not until she woke up and came home to him.
Where to even begin…
They say Marriage is supposed to be like living a fairy-tale with your best friend by your side in the beginning things were great, really great a year before Jim came back into the picture Kate found out she was 2 months Pregnant after the Crocodile incident and that Mike was going to be a Father the day 'Wyatt Michael McGregor Flynn' was born was the best day of their lives.
He was one when Kate decided she didn't want to pursue anything more with Mike as he'd come back on Hammersley so Jim ended up back in the picture at first she was hesitant I mean the first time he'd left was because she'd been in love with Mike and he'd seen it after Mike was injured trying to save him part of her was worried he'd leave again now things having been more complicated because Mike and Kate were connected forever through their one-year-old son.
6 months after Jim came back into Kates life he proposed to her unfortunately she hadn't been given the opportunity to tell him her answer when he was killed, Swaine was almost killed along with him but had managed to get off at the last minute the day of the remembrance ceremony Kate told Mike there was no one else she could imagine marrying but him.
A year later and Kate and Mike were marrying in an intimate ceremony on Hammersley with there now 2-year-old as Mikes best man, Mike was promoted to Captain and moved to NAVCOM while Kate was given Command of Hammersley.
When Wyatt was 7 years old Kate fell Pregnant with their second child but when she was 2 months on she lost their little baby due to complications and Kate was told that she'd not be able to carry any more kids they'd found lumps on one of her ovaries and was given a hysterectomy leaving the one good ovary behind however after the loss of their baby Kate didn't want to try for anymore kids, it was then when things began to become tense and awkward.
For the next four years Kate and Mike drifted further apart but stayed together for their son, there was still love there and there would always will be but things had changed Kate and Mike hadn't made love in 3 years and the rarely ever said I love you anymore whenever Patrol came up she was glad because she'd get a break it was like he was on Hammersley again but instead this time they were married none of the crew however knew about the problems going on between them as they never voices about them in public.
Mike moved out and into his own apartment near NAVCOM sharing Wyatt with Kate each weekend and whenever she went on Patrol he'd go and stay there they'd been separated for 6 months and neither one of them had filed for divorce I guess both of them hoping things would get better it was now a year later and they weren't any better they were supposed to have a meeting when she'd get back from Patrol but obviously fate had other ideas with her getting injured maybe it was the one thing that would bring them back together?
2 weeks had passed since Kate was brought into hospital Mike hadn't left her side the entire time unless it was to go home for a shower and change of clothes
"Have you slept lately?" Swaine asked as he spotted Mike making his way out of Kate's room
"Not until I know she's okay" he sighed as he sat down opposite her room
"Sir, you're not going to be any good to her if your run yourself into the ground" Swaine answered as he sat next to him
"She's my wife Swaine, what do you expect me to do!"
"Kate would want you to be looking after yourself too, I mean you look like you haven't slept since she came in here" he sighed
"I haven't only the occasional nodding off in the chair" he shrugged
"Why don't you head home I'll stay here with Kate, you need to shave have a shower" he said moving to stand
"It's not that bad is it?" he smirked running his hand across his face stubble that had accumulated over the past 2 weeks
"Any longer and you could start styling it" he smirked
"Can you stay with her? She needs someone here for when she wakes up" he said moving to stand
"Of course" Swaine nodded as a loud beeping came from Kates room
"I need some help in here!" a nurse yelled as Mike quickly ran into Kates room with the nurses behind him he stopped as he seen her sitting up pulling at the tube in her throat.
"Can you cough for me so we can take this out" the nurse said to her as Kate nodded slightly as she coughed the nurse slowly but carefully pulled the tube out as Mike watched on from near the door with Swaine
"Here, just a small sip" the second nurse said as Kate coughed slightly moving a hand up as she placed it around her neck she took small sips from the straw before she fell back against the pillow
"Mike…" her voice croaked a little as he quickly moved towards her as the nurse exited the room to get the doctor
"I'm here Kate" he smiled as he grabbed her hand she looked at him surprised she'd never seen him with a full on beard before just a few light stubbles here and there
"You… look like shit" she laughed a little as she held her throat
"Gee thanks" he grinned looking over at Swaine who moved towards them
"How you feeling Ma'am?" he asked stopping next to the bed
"Fine…" she shrugged slightly as Swaine looked over at Mike who laughed
"A typical Kate response" Swaine grinned
"Where's Wyatt?" she asked softly
"He's with my Mum" he smiled softly
"I should go and leave you too it, I'll let the crew know your awake" Swaine smiled as her as she moved back towards the door
"Thanks Swaine for keeping an eye on him" she smiled before turning to look at Mike
"He's been a pain, but it's been a pleasure" he grinned before exiting the room as he looked back he seen Mike leaning down as he placed a soft kiss against her forehead he noticed Kate slightly tense up.
