Hello, all! This is my first story ever, so I really appreciate you coming to read it. :)
I have just started watching Gotham on Netflix, and I absolutely love it so far! For those of you have watched it, I understand that the Selina/Edward pairing is a bit unorthodox given that in the first few seasons, Selina is a teenager while Edward is an adult. However, I kinda sorta put my own spin on this story.
I had a vision.
I imagined that Selina looked like Shay Mitchell's character, Peach Salinger, from You on Netflix. Hear me out! I wholeheartedly believe that Shay would have been a perfect (purrfect ;D) Catwoman on the show if she was on it. So, for the purpose of this story, my version of Selina is based on Peach Salinger from You (hence, her persona as Elena Salinger). But, of course, you are free to imagine Selina as whomever you want!
And also, I based the first chapter of this story on Season 1, Episode 12: "What The Little Bird Told Him." The part in the story where Selina meets Gordon is reminiscent of when Dr. Leslie Tompkins meets with Gordon again on the show.
Disclaimer: I do not own Gotham in any way, shape, or form.
And I think that's it! Without further ado, please enjoy the first chapter (yes, there will be more!) of When Selina Met Edward...
Chapter 1: Sweet Threats
Selina Kyle made her way down the street towards the Gotham City Police Department holding a cardboard box with her belongings inside. A few men lewdly wolf-whistled at her, to which she responded to with a scowl and a middle finger. She made sure not to draw too much attention to herself when doing so, as she was working undercover as a mole for the infamous Fish Mooney. Her professional style was apparent as she glanced at herself in a nearby shop window. She fixed her half up-half down styled hair in the reflection, taking out a stray one from behind her ear. Instead of her usual leather jacket, jeans, and knee-high boots, she donned a mint-green blouse, a black pencil skirt, and three-inch nude heels. Given the weather that day, she could have gone for dress pants, but Fish insisted on the tightest skirt imaginable. After all, her assignment was to seduce someone.
That "someone" being Officer Jim Gordon.
Going into Mooney's business, Selina didn't really know what to expect, other than playing with her victims and luring them to their death. She figured that she would have to bring out her flirtation tactics every once and a while, but she never thought she would be using those skills on Jim Gordon, a key player in the growing Falcone vs. Maroni debacle. Nevertheless, a big name never stopped Selina Kyle from going for the kill.
A few moments ago...
The car pulled up to the alley behind the G.C.P.D. building.
"We're here, Miss Mooney." The driver looked over his shoulder with dark-tinted glasses.
"About time. Alright, kitten, you ready?" Fish tucked a stray dark hair behind Selina's ear.
"Thank you for asking me that for the first time as we're parked right outside where I'm going to be performing my mission." Selina replied snarkily.
Fish sneered. "I make a habit of not hitting my girls often, but for you, dear, I might make an exception."
Selina huffed. "Fine, I'm leaving. Is there anything else I need?"
Fish reached into her purse and pulled out a photograph of her target. "This is Gordon. I figured giving you a picture would make your search easier."
Before Selina could take it, Fish retracted her hand swiftly. "I'm giving you a month, Selina. Fail me, and you know what that will mean for your family." She said threateningly.
Selina's eyes widened slightly, but she quickly sucked in a breath. She refused to show Fish what that threat did to her. She gingerly took the photo and tucked it into her skirt's back pocket. She opened the door of the car and stepped outside with her belongings.
"Jesus, it's freezing! Do you have a jacket or something I could borrow?" Selina asked as her teeth chattered.
"Nope. Beauty is pain, my dear," Fish smiled. "Now, let me see the walk."
Selina sighed. She started to walk clumsily down the alley, as her new persona "Elena Salinger" would do.
"You're not drunk, dear." She heard Fish mention in the background.
Selina waved her hand in a "leave me alone" gesture and started walking properly.
As she entered the building, she was immediately taken aback by how large it was on the inside as opposed to its exterior.
Wouldn't be surprised if the architect was inspired by "Doctor Who", Selina thought to herself.
As she studied her surroundings, she recalled the photo that Fish gave her of Gordon for reference. She scanned the room for a face that resembled his, and found it talking to a middle-aged fellow with a graying beard and a lanky man with glasses from across the lobby.
Selina smirked. Gordon was good looking in person, at least. She would enjoy toying with her prey.
She remembered that she had to play the part of her character every step of the way in her operation at the G.C.P.D., down to the minutiae. So, she plastered on a charming smile and walked down the steps towards the trio.
As she approached silently, not wanting to interrupt the "important" conversation they were having about the moniker of "The Electrocutioner," the grey-haired man with the beard noticed her from behind Gordon's head.
"Why, hello ma'am! Aren't you a pretty, young thing! Do you need my help with anything?"
Selina swallowed the rising bile in her throat. Keeping with her facade, she lightly chuckled.
"Well actually, I was here to see Officer Gordon. Do you know where I could find him?" She asked kindly.
The man scratched his chin. "Hmm, 'Gordon' doesn't ring a bell. Perhaps I could be of some assistance, instead?" He smiled and winked flirtatiously.
Gordon sighed and stood up. "Harvey, you're double her age at least, so quit it. Miss, I'm Officer Jim Gordon." He stuck out his arm, and Selina shook it.
"Elena Salinger. I'm here about my position, in record-keeping, as I recall?" Dear god, her voice was sweet enough to give a child cavities.
"Right, you signed up for the position about a week ago?"
"That would be correct, sir." Selina beamed.
"Great, I can show you to your office now, if you'd like." Jim stated.
"That would be wonderful, Officer Gordon." Selina replied cheerfully.
"'Jim' is fine, Elena," he said with a smile. "Ed here can help you with your stuff." He motioned to the tall man with glasses standing quietly next to her. She glanced at him briefly, noticing his agitated demeanor.
Selina smiled. "Oh, that really won't be necessary. I've been lugging these things around for a while, so I'll be fi-"
"No, allow me." Ed interjected. His voice wasn't as meek as she thought it would be, given his physique. He looked like one of the kids who got picked on in grade school for being a nerd, the ones who only spoke when spoken to. His voice in that moment seemed strong and deep, and though it wasn't prominent, she could see how tense he was when offering help.
"Oh, well thank you, Ed." She replied courteously. She gave him a smile, but all she got in return was a small, barely noticeable scowl. Brushing it off, she gently handed him the box she was holding. He took it somewhat roughly, gave her one last once-over, and started walking ahead.
Jim cleared his throat. "Your office is just around the corner, follow me."
Selina walked next to Jim through the hallway leading to her soon-to-be office. All the while, Ed walked briskly ahead of them. She thought it was a bit odd that he already knew where she was going to be situated, despite only Gordon knowing who she was, but didn't look further into it. "Ed" wasn't her target, anyway.
"I never knew how big a police department could actually be." Selina said offhandedly to Jim.
He chuckled softly. "Well, Gotham is notorious for having its secrets. Speaking of which, are you new to the city?"
Selina quickly fumbled for information. "Well, I have family who live here, but I'm actually from Metropolis." Shit, what if he decides to ask me about Metropolis? I've never even set foot there! She thought.
"Metropolis? You're the first person I've met that would move from there to Gotham. From what I've heard, it's a safe haven compared to here." Jim inquired.
Double shit. "Well, I-"
"Here is Miss Salinger's office, Detective Gordon." Ed interrupted again. Selina was thankful for the distraction, despite Ed interrupting her for the second time that morning.
The door to her new office was a generic office door, with a glass window labeled "Records Annex."
Jim fished inside his pant pocket for the key to the room. He handed it over to her.
"Well, Elena, I hope you enjoy working here for... however long you're working here." He smiled. "If there's anything you need, don't hesitate to ask me, or even Ed, for that matter."
At that, Ed gave an indignant huff.
Selina ignored him. "Thank you, Jim. I'm sure I will enjoy it here for... however long I'm here." She smiled sweetly.
Jim chuckled. "Take care, Elena." As he walked off, she could see him shaking his head as his shoulders shook lightly, indicating he was still laughing at her play on his words.
Selina grinned. This is going to be easier than I thought.
Coming back to reality, she remembered that Ed was still carrying her things.
"Oh, sorry! I forgot you were still here," she joked, even though it had a tint of rudeness, which was entirely on purpose. "You're awfully quiet... Ed, was it?"
Ed glared at her. She smiled back.
"I don't like to be called 'Ed.' I would much rather prefer Edward Nygma, if you don't mind, Elena." He stiffly held out his arms carrying her box.
She smirked and took it from him. "Well in that case, I would much rather prefer 'Elena Salinger', Edward." She shot back.
He shook his head, chuckling darkly before turning back to her. "I'll have you know, Elena, that the office that you are going to use was previously inhabited by my late girlfriend, Kristen Kringle. And don't think I don't know what your game is."
"I don't think you're in the right headspace to be accusing me of something I had nothing to do with, what with your 'late girlfriend'. I didn't know that I was participating in any game." Selina replied innocently, even though she knew exactly what he was playing at.
"You're just here to get into Gordon's pants, aren't you?" He sneered.
Her eyes widened. "Excuse me? Are you calling me a whore?"
"I said no such thing. But just so you're aware, Miss Kringle was exceptional at her job. She truly deserved it because of the hard work she did. She didn't have to come in with a full face of makeup and use the whole 'sexy' getup to get what she wanted. She had raw talent, which is, frankly, something I don't think you're capable of."
Selina was beyond amused with the conversation they were having. She didn't know the man who was sporting Gary Oldman's hair from The Fifth Element had the guts to speak up, much less insult her.
"You know, Ed, I'm not sure if we're talking about the same job. As far as I'm concerned, I'm just organizing manila folders into filing cabinets. The most I have to worry about is getting a papercut. And a word of advise, try making it more clear if you're actually insulting me or flirting with me." She replied with a smile.
Edward scoffed. "As if I would flirt with the likes of you. But maybe I'm using too many big words for your diminutive comprehension skills. All you need to know is that no one could ever compare to Miss Kringle. Not even a half-decent brunette like you."
"And there we go again with the flirting. Seriously, Eddie, if you wanted to ask me out, you could have just said so." Selina was having way too much fun with this.
He growled in frustration. "It's Edward. Mark my words, Miss Salinger, I will break you." He stomped off in a rush.
A million thoughts flooded her brain as she heard Edward's footsteps subside, but they all had the same meaning laced behind them:
I am going to claw Edward Nygma's fucking eyes out.
