Authors note: This is MHA story that has been floating in the back of my mind for a while now, based in an alternative timeline where Midoriya doesn't become a hero but instead falls down the path of a villain. The story will feature many characters from the show and also reference key plot points but will run down a different story to the show. I personally read the Manga so I don't want to unintentionally spoil something for those who don't read the manga. Also I don't know how popular this is going to be as I've never written a MHA story before but if people like it I'll probably continue it.

Also be aware that this story will run down a darker path from the show and may touch on some sensitive topics. I will also be re-writing some of the characters origins while making sure to stick to there core character.

Featuring: IzukuMidoriya (Deku), Himiko Toga, Dabi, Tomura Shigaraki and many more

The path to freedom

Have you ever asked yourself how different your life would be if things had worked out differently?

The rain poured down from the black clouds gathered above in the crimson sky, the soft touch of the water hitting his skin felt like bullets to the beaten up hero. He was a tall strong man with an incredible physique, his long wet blonde hair twisted over his face as he coughed up puddles of blood. His red and blue uniform torn to pieces as a result of the past fight he had endured. This utterly broken man was known as the worlds number 1 hero, a symbol of hope across the globe, and he had been defeated.

If only things were different, maybe we could have been friends.

Who could beat a man such as he, a man capable of lifting mountains and stopping tidal waves from wiping out entire city's. A man who could leap landscapes with just one jump, a man who had fought the most powerful villains and won. A man that no matter the circumstances always managed to keep a smile on his face.

His name is All Might and he was my hero, until the day he betrayed me.

In a world full of weird and wonderful quirks, everyone at a young age is expected to find a suitable place to learn to control and adapt to there abilities. However, as with all good things there is always an exception and Izuku Midoriya was just that. You see the young boy was unlucky enough to be born quirkless, with no power to call his own there was no way he could ever accomplish his life long dream of becoming a hero.

But that did not stop Midoriya, for what he lacked in power he made up for in wit and intelligence. He studied extra hard, made notes of every hero he encountered, the way they looked, sound, there strengths and there weaknesses. He was sure that by doing this he would be able to find some way to use this information to become a hero.

However as optimistic as he made himself out to be, deep down inside he knew the truth, the reality he had pushed aside. That he would never be able to become a hero, but he ignored those thoughts and pushed them aside, for he knew if All Might was here he would tell him.

You can be a hero!

That thought alone kept him going even if it was nothing but a fantasy…

Then it happened, after school had finished Midoriya was stuck in detention for fighting with a fellow classmate, Katsuki Bakugo. The two of them had been good friends once upon a time but ever sense it was revealed that Midoriya is quirkless, Bakugo betrayed there friendship and began occasionally tormenting him, threatening him to give up on his foolish dream of ever becoming a hero. That was actually why the two boys were here now.

About half an hour into detention, the spiky haired blonde had fallen asleep on his desk why there teacher sat there filling in the crossword in todays news paper.

"A four letter word for gore?"

"Guts!" Midoriya piped up, the teacher gave him a quizzical look before returning to his game. "Excuse me sir may I use the toilet?"

"Hmm, it fits perfectly, oh yes, just make sure you come back or we're be doing this tomorrow, and I don't think either of us want that"

Midoriya left the room with a silent nod and headed down the hall, it didn't take long to find the bathroom but as he did he noticed a puddle of what he assumed to be wine sipping underneath the girls toilets.

What the?! I should get help! I should go get the teacher right now!

But despite his mental warnings and the hair on his neck standing on edge he proceeded to slowly push the door open. He poked his head through, holding onto the door so that it didn't shut and alert whoever may be inside. He rushed to place a hand over his mouth, the bile stuck in his throat as his eyes widened in shock and horror.

Lying at the back of the room, was a young boy, his throat had been cut open and blood poured out and sprayed all over the walls. "There, all ready!" the voice of a young girl startled Midoriya as he pulled himself out of there, the door creaking shut behind him. He took a moment to catch his breath as he stood there on the opposite side of the door. Then he heard it the soft female voice whispering into his ear through the other side of the door. "I know your there, tee hee"

He ran, he ran fast and far, away from the bathroom and out of the school, he didn't care about detention, he only wanted to get as far away from there as possible. Leaving the school grounds he dared not turn back, but once again he ignored the cautious voice in his head and peaked over his shoulder. There he saw her, a young blonde girl, dressed in a blood stained school uniform. She stood there at the front of the school waving him goodbye, with twisted smile on her face. He ran faster.

Once Midoriya was safe, he informed the police about what he had witnessed, for the next couple of weeks the school was shut down and under investigation. They scanned the place clean, interrogating students and faculty a like but evidently they found nothing.

"According to the authorities the killer drains their victims dry of their blood making sure, to keep them alive in the process. It is uncertain as of this moment whether this is related to the killer's quirk or just some twisted way to torture there victims further. When asked about the identity of the blood sucking killer, authorities refused to put through a statement at this time"

Izuku Midoriya, was locked up in his room jotting away in his newest notebook, as he listened intently to the news station playing on his phone. It was second nature to Midoriya to take notes of the heroes, the stacks of books only proved his dedication. However, ever sense his brush with death, he decided to learn all he could about the bad guys as well. Not because he was fan of theirs, no of course not, he needed to be better prepared and as the old saying goes. Knowledge is power and he planned on learning all he could.

Finally school was open again, he sat at his desk only half listening to the lecture his teacher was giving the class. He was more focused on his drawing, in no way did Midoriya consider himself an artist but he didn't think his skills were to shabby.

"And before I let you little hooligans go, a reminder to those of you interested in becoming a hero" the teacher said, catching the classes attention. "The hero academies start accepting applications today, you have 6 months to decide who your going to enroll for. Honestly, I don't think any of you are hero material but what do I care"

This is it! I'll apply for UA and prove that I become a hero even without a quirk.

"Deku!" Bakugo yelled, slamming his fist down on the desk making the green haired boy jump.

"Bakugo! You startled me" he said, nervously. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed two other boys coming over to join Bakugo, his lacky's. He knew what this meant, so quickly he stood from his desk and grabbed his note book. But he was to slow as Bakugo swiped the book up and glared down at it furiously.

"What the fuck is this Deku! Notes on villians! You think you can become a hero with this" Bakugo said, then threw it out of the window.

"No!" Midoriya yelled, running past Bakugo to grab the book but one his lackys grabbed him and tossed him to the floor. He rubbed his sore head as he fought to push back the tears, he could feel forming.

Bakugo grabbed his shirt collar and pulled him close "Get it through your head Deku, you will never be a hero! You were born without a Quirk, your nothing more than a mistake!" He then walked away with the others.

"B-But b-being a hero is my dream. If I can't be a hero… Then what should I do!" Midoriya cried.

Bakugo stood there, his back to him as he struggled to control his anger "I life without a dream is pointless, if you can't fulfill your dream then you have no purpose. If that's the case then you may as well be dead… So kill yourself already and stop being such a burden to the rest of the world!" He said, then stormed out of the room.

Kill myself…

Midoriya was used to Bakugo's bullying but today felt like he was being extra mean, his words hurt more than any explosion ever could. Still he picked himself up and pushed aside his doubt, it didn't matter what they said, he can be a hero! He can be a hero! He knew he could, just like he knew All Might would agree with him. If he ever got the chance to ask.

That chance however, happened to come a lot sooner as he would have imagined. While Midoriya was walking home, he was attacked by a sludge like villain, the villain would have killed him if he hadn't been saved, by All Might. Following All Might to the rooftops, Midoriya worked up the courage to ask him the question that had been weighing on his mind all his life.

"All Might, I was born without a quirk but even so… is it possible for someone like me to become a Hero?"

He stood there as the shriveled up old man starred back at him with sadness in his eyes. He knew that All Might would say yes, he was sure that symbol of peace would smile at him with that big toothy grin and reassure him that his dream wasn't a fruitless one. That with enough determination and effort, anyone can become a hero.

"I'm sorry young man…"

You Can't Be A Hero

All Might stood there looking at the green haired boy, for a moment he felt he may have gone to far but it was something he needed to hear. After all he couldn't have civilians endangering themselves on the false pretense that they could be like him. He turned his gaze from the boy and then with one single leap shot up into the sky, Leaving Midoriya behind him.

Midoriya fell to his knees, his vison beginning to blur from the outburst of tears "Hahahahaha!"

It dosen't matter what anyone says.

They can tell me I can't be a hero.

That my life is pointless

None of that matters because I know All Might will believe in me

He will tell me that I can be a Hero

I can be a hero

I can be a hero

I can be a hero!

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" Midoriya screamed, letting out his eternal pain.

He doesn't remember climbing down the stairs of that building, just like he doesn't recall walking this far into town. However, he dose recall those words, "You can't be a hero" never had he felt so betrayed. The one person he looked up to, the one person he knew would always be able to give him hope. Has betrayed him.

"Ahhhhhhhhh!" a panicked scream caught Midoriya's attention. He lifted his head up from the ground only to see the sludge villian attacking someone. A huge crowd gathered round observing the carnage, Midoriya pushed past the people making his way to the front. There he saw it Katsuki Bakugo being absorbed by the slime villian, completely helpless to fight back.

"What do we do!"

"Are quirks are useless against that thing!"

Midoriya turned his head to the voices, a small group of heroes were standing by watching, just watching. They weren't fighting the villian or even attempting to save the boy, they were just standing there watching, putting there own lifes above his. As he watched Bakugo struggle in the slimes grip, he felt a spark ignite inside him, this was it, the chance he had been waiting for to prove himself.

I can be a hero!

He charged at the slime clawing away at it with his own hands, determined to prove himself and save Bakugo. However, his efforts were in vain as the slime began to absorb him as well, luckily All Might finally made an appearance and put an end to the villain with one fatal blow.

The two boys were breathless, All Might stood there addressing the crowd while another hero helped Bakugo to his feet despite his protest. "Hey!" an angry man yelled, grabbing Midoriya by the arm and pulling him to his feet. "The hell do you think you were doing back there! You trying to get yourself killed! That was reckless and incredibly irresponsible!"

"I-I'm sorry I just wanted to save him" Midoriya apologized

"Save him, listen kid a scrwnny runt like you isn't capable of saving anyone" the hero barked

"Yeah, well at least I'm not afraid to try!" Midoriya snapped back at him, the crowd went silent as all eyes were now on them including the media. "I-I-I'm sorry I was just trying to help" he apologized then turned to All Might who had his back to him. "All Might you saw right? You know now right, that I can be a hero! Please All Might tell them!"

"If you want to protect people then become a cop, people often make fun of them because all they do is lock up the villians but it's a fine job"

The crowd began laughing at him, why the hero holding onto him dropped him to the floor, Midoriya sat there on the ground, he didn't understand, why? No matter what he did, no matter how hard he tried to prove himself, All Might would always deny him. Why?! Didn't he see, he was the only one willing to risk his life to save him, the other heroes were willing to let him die! So Why! Why!

You can't be a hero, You can't be a hero, you can't be a hero, you can't be a hero, you can't be a hero, you can't be a hero, you can't be a hero!

YOU CAN'T BE A HERO!

Midoriya rose from the ground, his emotions out of control as he chuckled to himself "You must be joking, you deny the only person who actually tried to save him!" he yelled, All might still refused to face him. "The rest of you so called heroes just sat around watching him die, while I was willing to sacrafice myself in order to save Bakugo!" he yelled, the heroes behind him growing annoyed. Yet they did nothing, not wanting to occur the media's wrath. "Yet, that still isn't enough. You heroes are all fake, your nothing but a bunch of power hungry dictators and you're the worst one of them all, All Might." Midoriya accused, moving through the crowd to face his would be idol. Poking him in the chest he continued his hate filled rant, looking up at the hero who refused to meet his gaze. "You trick everyone into liking you with your hope filled speech and your smiles but really all you care about is power. The power to protect the innocent and rule over them, well I swear to you All Might I will bring true freedom to this world. A world without heroes" He yelled, then fled the scene.

Midoriya didn't go home, he knew there was a likely chance that his mother had witnessed his speech and would want to talk with him. He wasn't in the mood for that, instead he had returned to the school, sitting on the edge of the roof as he looked down below. He was very high up, a fall from here would probably kill him "If you can't achieve your dream then you may as well be dead, if that's the case then you may as well kill yourself" Bakugos words floated round his head, like ghosts haunting him, he looked down again, would it hurt he wondered, would he feel it?

He wiped the tears away, then let out what would probably be his final sigh, I lived my whole life thinking I could be a hero, I lived a lie and now that I finally realize it's not possible, that I can't reach my dream. I don't see the point in continuing anymore.

"Midoriyaaaaaaa!" he jumped at the voice, no one should be here, not at this time, but still there was no mistaking it someone had made their way up here. He turned his head to face the voice, a cold chill was sent running down his spine as he locked eyes with his visitor. "It's you?" he said, in a small whisper pointing at the girl as she inched closer. Midoriya moved to retreat from the edge of the roof but the girl moved faster then lighting as before he knew it she was directly behind him, tightly gripping onto both his shoulders. He struggled in her grip but with his legs already dangling over the edge of the building it only served for him to lose more headway.

"One little push Midoriya, one little push and it's your blood all over the floor, oh how romantic would that be, still I'd rather cut you up a bit first" She released her left hand from his shoulder and drew a knife from her skirt pocket. Midoriya flinched as he could only watch as droplets of blood escaped from where she slowly ran the knife across his cheek. It stung a little, but the cut wasn't deep, certainly wasn't fatal, what was the point of that he wandered. Then suddenly out of the blue she licked his cheek, he felt his face heat up as he instinctively pulled away incidentally head-butting her in the face.

Sensing opportunity he quickly got to his feet and turned back around, "Catch!" Midoriya didn't even have time to react as he suddenly felt something hard hit him in the chest, knocking him of balance. This was it, he felt his body falling backwards. If he had a flight quirk there'd be no problem but he was quirkless and because of that he was as good as dead. Or so he thought, the one thing keeping him from falling to a gruesome end was the girl that had been trying to kill him moments ago. Confusing as this was Midoriya knew not to look a gifted horse in the mouth.

HE's heavier than I thought he'd be, the blonde girl, other Wise known as the mosquito murderer, otherwise known as Toga, was holding onto Midoriya by his right hand. The rest of him was dangling from the building. Why had she come here, was it to tie up loose ends, after all he had seen her in the middle of her "private business". But no, the reason she followed him here was to ask him a few simple questions, well one really.

"Do you like me?" Toga asked, ignoring Midorya's panicked scream's

This wasn't how it was meant to go but to say she was surprised would be a lie, I mean every time she finds someone new, it always ends the same. They either reject her and she gruesomely murders them or they betray her and she kills them. Seriously how hard is it to find a decent guy. "My arm is getting tired"

"Don't let go!" Midoriya yelled up, desperation and fear clinging from his words.

"Finally, do you know how rude it is to keep a lady waiting" Toga said, pouting her lips.

"Please, pull me up"

"Answer my question first" Toga said.

"Huh?"

"Do you like me?"

"What? Are you serious" Midoriya looked at her, her expression was ice cold but she was deadly serious. He thought for a moment, what could he say that would convince someone as twisted as her to spare him. "In terms of attractiveness your very pretty but if you're asking if I personly like you… I'd have to say no. You're a criminal, a killer and even if my viewpoint on heroes have changed that doesn't mean I think any differently on criminals"

Why the hell did I say that! I'm so dead!

"Midoriya!" Toga looked down at him as he began to grow nervous. "Thank you! That was the most heart felt thing anyone has ever said about me"

Huh?

She seemed general flustered as her face turned a crimson pink, "Y'know, I think I like you too" she said, with a sheepish smile.

The idea of a serial killer fawning over him was not a pleasant one, he kept that thought to himself as she pulled him up. A few moments later he was back on the roof sitting in front of Toga, who was looking down at him with a smug smile. "Well then, Midoriya I'll see you around" She said, making her way to the exit. "Untill next time, boyfriend"

Midorya sat there catching his breath for the third time today he had almost died, he looked down at the book Toga had thrown at him it was one of his note books, but this one seemed newer. He opened it up, it was filled with notes about Toga "The book Bakugo had gotten rid of" it was slightly damaged but mostly everything seemed the same. Except taking a closer look, someone had made a few edits, leaving a few notes of their own. "Was this Toga?" Before he could finish that thought he suddenly found himself falling. Falling through the air and plummeting to the ground, the first thought that came to mind was Why?! Followed by how?! Everything after that was jumble of panicked internal screams before everything went dark.

"Is it done"

"Yes sir, but was this really necessary he is just a boy after all"

"So were you when I found you, the boy holds potential, it would be a waste to squander it"

"I understand sir, but still… I hate killing kids"
