"Wakey wakey," said the Doctor softly and shook sleeping Rose's shoulder.
"Five more minutes," she groaned sleepily.
The Doctor chuckled softly. "Rose, do you know what day is it?" he asked with a mischievous tine. "No," she answered now slightly more conscious.
"It's April Fool's Day!" said the Doctor excitedly. "And for this specific occasion, I have a magnificent place to show you," he explained and grinned.
She got up on one elbow and nodded. "What kind of magnificent place? Where is it?"
His grin got wider. "You'll see".
- 30 minutes later -
When the TARDIS was about to landed, Rose was already out of her pajamas, dressed in comfy clothes. "Let's see what's out there," she said with a smile.
"Oh, I know what's out there, Rose Tyler, and you're gonna love it," said the Doctor and smiled at her. "Well, without further ado, ALLONS-Y!" he said, grabbed her hand and pulled her out.
They landed in a corner of a long street running a market. People were shouting offers all over the place, but surprisingly, it wasn't the usual stuff – food, artworks, jewelry. It was all about April Fool's Day. "Buy two water guns and get one free!", "Five rubber snakes for only three Kasokades!", things like that.
Rose looked in wonder at the people in the market, then back at the Doctor, question in her eyes.
The Doctor grinned and explained. "You see, the Xenasians have holidays pretty similar to those you have on Earth, apart from the fact that they take their holidays a lot more seriously than you lot do".
"Well, show me what all the fuss is about," said Rose and gestured towards the busy market. "Gladly," he said in response and dragged her along.
- some hours later –
"I had no idea," said Rose, laughing. "Just thinking they do this every year, every holiday. Wow! Where do they get all those little blue flower-like fruit?"
"Oh, they're from this planet called-" he said and blurted out a very long word that started with 'Fro' and ended about half a minute later with 'dask'. He smiled at the puzzled expression on Rose's face. "Yeah, they like long words there. There was this one time I visited there and had a lovely conversation with one of the locals, a very nice Frostandaskin – it's a short version of how they call themselves, because you know, we don't have all day, I can't just say the whole thing every time, but what am I babbling about? Anyway, if I'm already mentioning Frostandask, it reminds me they have some beautiful sunsets over there, remind me somewhen to take you there to see them. Wait, what was I talking about?"
"Where the blue flower-like fruit came from," answered Rose and shook her head, laughing. You can't ask the man- I mean, Time Lord a simple question without getting an hour-long-at-a-hundred-miles-per-hour explanation. "Anyway-" she continued, trying to prevent him from talking.
But there was no stopping him.
"As I was saying, Rose Tyler, those fruit – called Yatsuzay, by the way – are a very popular delicacy here on Kaznav. The locals buy them in thousands, even though the shipping takes a really long time – about eight and a half Hozals, which in Earth equivalent is approximately two years and a week."
Rose looked at him and wondered to herself how can he keep going on forever like this without stopping to breathe every once in a while. But of course, he was the Doctor, after all. He could do pretty much anything he wanted.
Without noticing, her gaze wandered off to his lips. She wasn't listening to whatever it was he was prattling about. All the while he kept talking, not aware of Rose's lack of attention.
"So, as you can see, the Kaznaveins are very patient-" he stopped talking all of a sudden. He – at last – noticed Rose was staring at him, and was now staring back at her. "You're staring at me," he pointed out obvious.
"What?" asked Rose hazily, coming back to her senses.
"You. were. staring. at. me." he emphasized every word, like he was talking to an infant.
"No, I'm wasn't," she denied.
"Yes, you were. And you still are," he exclaimed triumphantly.
Rose shook her head and hurriedly moved her gaze to her eyes. The Doctor noticed it and smiled smugly.
"What are you so smug about?" she said, wordlessly admitting her defeat.
"Nothing, nothing," he said with a laugh.
"You're gonna get a smack, you are!" she said cheekily and smiled at him, her tongue poking from between her teeth like it always does.
Now it was the Doctor's turn to stare. He tried to avoid staring at her, because he was afraid that somewhen the urge to kiss her would be too much and he'll do is, and then she'll want to go home.
He didn't want her to go.
But of course, he wasn't really afraid. Time Lords are never afraid.
"Time Lords are never afraid," he murmured without realizing it.
"What?" asked Rose, confused.
"Hmm?" he hummed in response.
"You said 'Time Lords are never afraid'."
"Did I? I don't think I did." he mumbled.
"Yes, you did. Why?" Rose said sternly.
"I, umm… I don't know," he said, seeming uncomfortable. "Maybe I was…" he trailed off.
"You were what?"
"Thinking of some stuff," he answered, uncharacteristically quiet.
"What kind of stuff?" she kept investigating.
"Nothing important," he said. "Let's get back in the TARDIS, shall we? It's getting late," he blurted out before she could question further.
"Fine," she huffed, giving up.
"Good," he said, cheerful again. But Rose could tell he was faking. She let it go, telling herself she would ask him later.
- Author's Note –
Umm, hello there.
I wanted to write something nice for April Fool's Day, because bloody Corona is happening and I don't have anything interesting to do.
(Apart of doing my assignments ['cause I'm in 8th grade], but let's ignore that!)
I started this fanfic at about 15:00, April 1st, 2020, and finished it at 00:02, April 2nd, 2020.
I was so disappointed I couldn't upload the fanfic on time (April 1st) – but apparently, the website is working according to PST, and I live in Israel, so I had some spare eight-ish hours :)
Anyway, this is my first-ever fanfiction, and my native language is not English (If you recall, I live in Israel – I speak Hebrew), so have mercy :')
But at the same time, review and tell me what's wrong – I want to get better :D
