Chapter 1: The royal knight
Jaune Arc honestly didn't know what he was doing any longer.
He was 15 years old, and a student at Hitsue Junior High School. He lived with his mother, father, and his seven sisters. He got decent grades, and he wasn't tremendously out of shape. In fact he was actually rather good looking, with his shaggy blonde hair and blue eyes, it wasn't hard to like his looks. But despite this, he was often picked on at school by bullies. The reason for this? Because of his personality.
He was quite cowardly.
It was because of his cowardly personality that a lot of students laughed at or picked on him. Even some of the teachers picked on him, he got almost no piece. His only break was at lunch time when he can relax on the roof by himself away from all the bullies.
Jaune started to get up after hearing the school bell and headed for the door until he was tripped by the biggest bully in his school, Cardin Winchester. Luckily after tripping him up Cardin just walked away while laughing. Jaune got up and dusted his clothes and sighed. He picked up his school bag and properly left, not noticing a boy his age with black hair and pink eyes and a girl his age with orange hair and blue eyes watching him as he left.
Down the street
Jaune walked down the street, kicking a can angrily as he did so. "Damn it, damn it, damn it!" he growled to himself. "I wish I could stand up to them" he sighed as he felt his anger drain and he became miserable. "Oh, who am I kidding. There's no way I can beat them at anything…"
He glanced to his left and he suddenly stopped. Looking into the shop, he saw someone was having difficulty carrying a lot of boxes, and looked like they were about to fall over. He also noticed what looks like a pack fall from one of the box. Panicking, Jaune ran in and dropped his bag. "Hey um...do you need any help?"
"Please," a calm male voice said. He quickly took two boxes from the four he was carrying and held them in his arms. "Please put them down behind the counter." Jaune complied, putting them down behind the counter, as the man put them down just beside his. "Thank you for the help," he said kindly.
"No problem," Jaune said as he looked over after picking up the pack the man dropped, now getting a good look of him. He had short and unkempt silver hair, along with a pair of brown eyes. He was rather pale, but by no means an ill looking pale. On his nose was a pair of small round glasses, that seemed to be mostly for appearance. He was dressed in a white shirt and blue jeans, along with wearing a blue apron. "Sorry about just barging in, but you looked like you were about to fall over."
"It is quite alright," he said kindly. "Those were heavy, but I wanted them all moved at once to save time. If you had not come, I may have been injured."
Jaune nodded, "So uh...what kind of store do you run?" he said a little awkwardly. "I wasn't exactly paying attention since I ran in to help you."
The man chuckled lightly. "I run a card shop. This store is called Card Capital. I'm closed right now, but I'll be opening in a few minutes. Could you perhaps help me out a little bit in unpacking these boxes? I have no qualms about paying you."
"You don't need to do that," Jaune told him quickly. "I'm fine with helping out...though you will need to direct me on where to unpack stuff...um sorry, I don't know your name."
"Ah, right," the man chuckled again, though this time it was slightly sheepish. "Forgive me, I do tend to forget to do that at times. My name is Ozpin. May I ask your name?"
"Jaune Arc," the blonde responded as he picked up one of the boxes and began to unpack, with Ozpin giving him directions on where to unpack. With the two of them doing it, they quickly unpacked within only five minutes. As they unpacked, Jaune saw one name constantly on everything. 'Cardfight Vanguard'.
When they finished, Ozpin and Jaune both sat on chairs. "Thank you for the help," Ozpin said kindly.
Jaune just flashed a smile. "It was nothing. Always happy to help out when I can."
The man nodded and he studied Jaune. "You say you don't want to be paid, but I would still like to thank you...so I'd like to give you a trial deck of your choice, if you please? You can even have the pack you picked up."
The blonde blinked. "Wha- but are you sure? I mean...I'm sure I could pay for it, I don't want you to be losing any mone-"
Ozpin put his hand up. "As I said, think of it as a thank you. Had you not helped I would have been unpacking another 15 minutes. You saved me a great amount of time. So please, by all means pick a trial deck and take it. It will be all yours. Though I recommend opening the pack first to see if you got any good cards"
"O-oh," Jaune said in surprise. "W-well um...thank you..." Jaune opened up the pack, revealing 7 cards inside of it. Jaune carefully looked at each card with Ozpin telling him what clan the card was from before settling on the last card "Blue Sky Knight, Altmile?" The card depicted a green haired man wearing blue and white armour while holding a sword.
Ozpin hummed at the card "That's quite the good pull. That card is part of a new Royal Paladin set that was released just yesterday. A knight that earned the respect of the royal court despite being a commoner. You're quite lucky Jaune" He said with a smile. Jaune stared at the Altmile card. Altmile sounded like the person he wanted to be… one who earned people's respect. He was cut from his thoughts from Ozpin placing a deck in front of him "This is a royal paladin trial deck. This plus Altmile will help you start Vanguard."
"Huh?" Jaune blinked. "But...who would I play against?"
Ozpin smiled, "Why me, of course. I may not look it, but I have played vanguard before. And while I do have my own deck, I shall use another of the trial decks to be fair since you are a beginner." Standing up, Ozpin grabbed another of the trial decks off the wall and handed Jaune the rule book. "Here. Read through it to understand the game. If you have a little trouble sometimes while we play, do not hesitate to ask."
With a nod, Jaune sat down and began to read the rulebook after replacing one of the cards with Altmile. While he did, Ozpin walked to the doors and turned the sign, showing the store was now open, and smiled as people began to enter.
A few minutes later, Jaune was finally done reading and he looked at Ozpin, who was just finishing selling a booster pack to a young boy. "I think I've got the rules down."
Ozpin nodded and stood up and put a small sign on the desk that said 'busy, will be back to serve soon', before he walked over to Jaune and set his starting card face down on the vanguard circle, before he began to shuffle his deck.
Jaune did the same, and both put their decks down before they both drew five cards. Jaune looked over his hand before he picked two cards and put them at the bottom of his deck before drawing the same amount. Ozpin himself only returned a single card before the two shuffled their decks and put them down. Jaune was about to begin, but Ozpin spoke. "Picture it."
The blonde blinked. "Huh?"
Ozpin gave a mysterious smile. "In your mind, picture it. The two of us have appeared as spirits on the planet similar to earth known as Cray."
Jaune blinked but suddenly his eyes widened as he found himself standing opposite a ghostly version of Ozpin in a mountain like area with a clear blue sky. Ozpin smiled at him. "Stand up! Vanguard!" Ozpin turned over the card and, before Jaune's eyes, form changed on Cray. Standing there was now a red lizard wielding two laser swords. "Lizard Runner Undeux."

"I suggest I go first to help you understand how a standard turn works. Is that alright?" Ozpin asked him. Jaune simply nodded. "Good. Then I draw," he drew a card and added it to his hand. "I ride Embodiment of Armour, Bahr he placed the card on the vanguard circle, and his form changed on cray to a blue demon with red armour wielding a sword. "with Undeux's skill I will draw a card" Ozpin drew a card before looking at Jaune "That shall be my turn."

Jaune nodded and drew. "I draw...and then I ride Squire Knight, Allen he placed the card on his vanguard circle, a boy covered in white armour replaced the dog. "And uh... Draw with Glyme's skill and call Wingal" he placed it to the right of his vanguard as a blue dog with pink hair appeared. "Then I attack your vanguard with Wingal!" he turned the card on its side, initiating the attack.

Ozpin hummed for a moment before glancing at his hand, "I shall guard with Red Gem Carbuncle." He placed the Draw Trigger in the guardian circle, and as Jaune's unit attacked, a red winged lizard dog appeared between Ozpin's Vanguard and Jaune's unit. Jaune's unit jumped back and Ozpin's guardian vanished as he put it into the drop zone.

"Um...then I attack with Squire Knight Allen," Jaune said, turning the card on its side. The white armoured boy got into a stance
"I will not guard that attack," Ozpin told him, and Allen jumped towards Ozpin's vanguard.
Jaune nodded. "Then um...I check the drive trigger," he turned over the top card to reveal a Knight of Silence, Gallatin. Jaune's vanguard hit Bahr, and Ozpin looked to his deck.

"I check for a damage trigger," he said as he turned over the top card, but only succeeded in revealing another Bahr. He placed it into his damage zone.
Jaune looked over the field before nodding and looking to Ozpin. "That will be the end of my turn," he told him.

"Then it is my turn," Ozpin said. "I draw...then I shall ride Dragon Knight, Nehalem." He placed it on his vanguard circle, and a man wearing blue armour while riding a dragon appeared. "Then I shall call Embodiment of Shield, Lahm to the rear-guard," he placed it beside his vanguard as a red armoured man holding a shield shaped like a dragon's head appeared on the battle field, standing ready.

"Now, Lahmattacks," Ozpin turned the card on its side. Jaune scanned his hand before deciding
"I uh...won't guard," Jaune said, wincing a little as the knight bashed his shield into Jaune's vanguard, and he turned over the top card of the deck, his eyes lighting up. "A draw trigger! I give 10000 power to Allen, and then I draw one card!" he put the card into his damage zone before he drew a card from his deck.
Ozpin turned his two cards on their side, "Now Nehalem will attack." Nehalem charged towards Allen with a loud battle cry.
"I won't guard," Jaune said, his voice sounding a bit more confident. After all it would only hit if Ozpin got a trigger now. Ozpin was forced to suppress a smile, and he turned over the top card of his deck.
"A draw trigger," Ozpin announced. "The power shall go to Nehalem and I draw a card." The dragon rider slashed Allen, and Jaune winced again.
"Damage trigger check," he said as he turned over the card, revealing a Wingal.
Ozpin smiled at him. "That shall end my turn," he told the blonde.

A nod was all he received in reply as he stood his units and drew a card. "I stand and draw," he glanced over his hand before he picked his card. "I ride Blaster Blade!" he placed the card on top of Allen, his Vanguard now being a White armoured man wielding a giant sword. "Then I move Wingal back and call Knight of Silence, Gallatin," Wingal jumped back as a knight wearing a red blindfold appeared where he once stood.

Ozpin smiled. He may not even realize, but he is quickly assembling a powerful formation. If he is able to draw that card, then this game will go in his favour.
"With a boost from Wingal, Gallatin will attack Nehalem!" Jaune declared as he turned the two cards on their sides, and Ozpin noticed his voice was far more confident than it was when he first entered the store.

"I will not guard that attack," Ozpin told him. Gallatin slammed into Nehalem and the warrior stumbled back from the impact. "Damage Trigger check," Ozpin turned over the top card, and frowned just slightly at the lack of a trigger, only revealing his other Embodiment of Shield, Lahm He placed the card into his damage zone.
"Then Blaster Blade will attack your vanguard!" Jaune said as he turned the card on its side. The warrior jumped towards Nehalem.
"Once more," Ozpin said. "I do not guard."
Jaune smiled and turned over the top card of his deck, revealing a Grade 3 unit, Alfred Early. Ozpin did not even flinch as his vanguard was knocked back again on Cray, turning over another card, and once more frowning as the card was another Bahr, not a trigger. He put the card in the damage zone.

"In that case it is my turn," Ozpin stood his units and drew a card. "The apocalyptic flames that burn everything in this world. Ride, Dragonic Overlord" He placed the unit onto the vanguard circle, and a large red dragon with flaming wings holding a sword appeared in a burst of flames while roaring "Imaginary Gift: Force 1" Ozpin took a card from the pile on the other side of his deck and placed it underneath the vanguard.

Jaune raised an eyebrow "Gift?" Ozpin nodded. "When you ride a grade 3 you can get an imaginary gift depending on the clan. Both these decks are a force clan. With force 1 the card on top of the gift gain 10000 power during your turn"

Jaune's eyes widened as Ozpin called more cards "I call Dragon armoured Knight and two Dragon Monk, Gojo" A man wearing blue armour that was shaped like a dragon appeared next to Ozpin's vanguard as two lizard men wielding staffs appeared, one behind the vanguard and the other behind Lahm. "Dragonic Overlord's skill". I soulblast one card and he gains 10000 power. Ozpin removed a card from underneath his vanguard as a red aura surrounded the large dragon

Jaune gulped as Ozpin turned his vanguard to the side "Overlord attacks" Jaune looked confused at Ozpin not boosting the attack for a moment "N-No guard" Ozpin nodded "Twin drive. First. Nothing. Second. Critical trigger. I give all effects to Overlord" Ozpins drive checks revealed another Dragonic Overlord and a critical trigger as the large dragon swung its sword which slammed into Blaster Blade, making jaune wince "Damage check. First, nothing. Second, Draw Trigger! I give the power to blaster blade and draw a card" The damage checks revealed another Blaster Blade and a draw trigger
Jaune gave a sigh of relief as the extra card would help "Don't relax just yet. Overlords effect. If his attack hits I can flip over a card in the damage zone anddiscard 2 cards to restand him. Although he only gets one drive check now" Jaune gulped again as the large dragon stood up again and roared. Ozpin discarded the Overlord from the drive check and another Dragon Armoured Knight

Jaune quickly slammed a card onto the guardian circle "I guard with Strong Knight, Rounoria. With her skill I can discard a card and nullify your attack" A red haired girl wearing white armour while carrying a shield appeared in front of Overlord and blocked his attack. Ozpin nodded in approval "excellent use of a perfect guard. Drive check. Critical trigger. I give all effects to Dragon Armoured Knight" Jaune put the perfect guard in the drop zone as Ozpin prepared his next attack "Now Dragon Armoured Knight will attack your vanguard and with his skill he gains 3000 power" The man wearing dragon armour drew his sword and charged towards Blaster Blade

Jaune placed another card in the guardian circle "I guard with Flogal" a pink dog appeared and took the hit meant for Blaster Blade. Ozpin turned over his last card "Then I'll attack Gallatin with Lahm" Jaune raised an eyebrow at this so Ozpin clarified "If you know you can't deal the finishing blow then you can at least mess up their formation and make them waste cards to build it back up" Jaune nodded at this "no guard" The red armoured man slammed into the blind knight making him disappear
Ozpin watched as Jaune moved his rearguard into the drop zone before smiling. "Then I shall end my turn here."

Jaune sighed in relief as it was his turn now. "I stand and draw," Jaune stood his two units before he drew a card and his eyes widened at the card he drew. It was Altmile. Ozpin smiled "Judging by that reaction id say you drew that card. To have only one copy in the deck and for it to appear now. I'd say you and that unit were destined to be partners" Jaune looked at Ozpin at his words "that card wants to fight with you…. Will you allow it to?" Jaune stared at the card for a few seconds before having a determined look on his face "I will, Noble sword to guide us to the future. Ride! Blue Sky Knight, Altmile!" A large white aura surrounded Blaster Blade and obscured the view of the other units on the battlefield. When the light died down the white and blue armoured man was on the battle field except, instead of having green hair, his hair was exactly like Jaune.

"Imaginary Gift: Force 1" Like Ozpin did before Jaune took a card from the pile across from his deck, but put it on the circle in front of Wingal. Ozpin smiled as Jaune seemed more confident. The two of them unaware that they were drawing a crowd
"Altmile's skill" Jaune shouted as he flipped over a card in his damage zone and discarded a card "I can search my deck for 2 grade 2 cards and add them to my hand" He searched for the last two copies of Blaster Blade in the deck and added them to his hand "next I call Allen. With his skill I can draw a card then call a card from my hand so I'll call Blaster Blade with this skill" he called the white armoured boy behind Altmile and flipped over a card in his damage zone before drawing a card and calling Blaster Blade to the circle with the force marker on it "Blaster Blade's skill. I counterblast and soulblast and retire Lahm" Blaster Blade stabbed his sword to the ground as a stream of lightning appeared and electrocuted the red armoured man. Ozpin smiled at this play
"Then I call the other Blaster Blade and use the same skill to retire Dragon Armoured Knight" Another Blaster Blade appeared and destroy the armoured knight "I call another Wingal" another blue dog appears behind the second Blaster Blade
Ozpin smiled "Are you sure you want to waste all your counterblasts just like that" Jaune nodded "I do. Because if there are no face up cards in my damage zone, Altmile gains 15000 power" Ozpins eyes widened as a white aura surrounds Altmile

Ozpin's nodded as Jaune began his attack "The Blaster Blade on the left attacks while being boosted by Wingal. Wingal's skill. A Blaster Blade he boosts gains 5000 power" The white armoured man on the left began his attack.

Ozpin studied his hand for a moment before speaking "No guard" the armoured man sliced the large dragon with his sword and Ozpin's damage check revealed another Gojo
"Damage check. No trigger. Now I'm at 4 damage" Jaune nodded and turned his vanguard sideways "Boosted by Allen, Altmile will attack your Vanguard" Altmile charged towards the large dragon

Ozpin placed three cards on the guardian circle "I guard with Dragon Monk Genjo, Embodiment of Spear, Tahr and Dragon Knight, Burj" A monk wearing yellow robes, a man wielding a spear and a boy wearing red armour appeared in front of Overlord "You would need 2 triggers to pass"

Jaune's eyes widened before turning the top card of his deck "a heal trigger….." He looked between Altmile and the standing Blaster Blade
"One last chance Mr Arc," Ozpin told him. "Will you remain a shy boy? Or will you become confident? It will all be determined by your choice. Will you go for the safest choice? Or will you take the risk?"
Jaune's eyes widened at that, and he clenched his fist. Loser...weak...why the hell are you even alive? Memories echoed in Jaune's mind. You aren't anything but a coward, Arc!
"I... I won't run away anymore! I give all effects to Altmile!" Jaune told Ozpin as he grabbed the top card of his deck. "I won't let myself be shy! I will win!" he turned over the top card, and his eyes widened as he stared at it.

But more importantly than that...it was a critical trigger.
Slowly, a grin split on Jaune's face, and a small smile came onto Ozpin's lips. "I got a critical trigger!" Jaune said with glee. "I'll give all of the effects to Altmile!" the knight charged towards Overlord as the aura around him became bigger

Altmile swung its his sword down, easily taking out the three units guarding Overlord, before slicing the dragon across the chest. The dragon roared in pain and dropped it's sword
Ozpin simply smiled. "Checking for Damage Triggers," Ozpin said, the tension still there as he turned over his first card. Nehalem. He put it into his damage zone. "And the second check..." he turned over his second card, and Jaune's smile grew wide, and Ozpin's became resigned. Dragonic Overlord
"I'm at six damage," Ozpin said. "I have lost. Well done, Jaune."
Jaune's grinned just grew wider before it vanished and a look of realization came over his face. "I...I won?"
Ozpin nodded. "Yes. It appears you and that card are destined for great things" Ozpin showed the last two cards in his hands Crested Dragon and Guard Griffon…. A perfect guard "W-Why didn't you use that against my vanguards attack?" Ozpin gave a smile "To see if you would believe in yourself. There are times in this game where you will have to take risks. Those who know when to take those risks are the ones who go far"
The blonde just looked bewildered, even as Ozpin gathered up the cards from the trial deck he had just used and returned them to the shelf, and then he returned to the counter. Jaune looked at his deck before gathering up all his cards and rushing over to Ozpin. "U-um...can I buy a booster box please?"
Ozpin nods his head and smiles before pulling out a booster box. "This is the set that Altmile and his support came out. This will be the one you want. That will be 5000 yen," Ozpin told him. (100 Yen = 1 US Dollar)
"Do you take card?" Jaune asked as he quickly pulled out his wallet. He often saved up money, so he had quite a lot of money in his account. Ozpin nodded and handed him the card reader, and the transaction was quickly done.
Ozpin gave Jaune the booster box, "Thank you for your purchase."
Jaune nodded and checked the time. "Oh no! I need to get home! I'm usually back by now and my parents and siblings are probably worried!" he bowed to Ozpin. "Thank you for the help sir! I'll be sure to come by tomorrow!" he quickly turned and ran out of the store, missing Ozpin's soft smile.

Jaune runs out the shop at full speed, passing by the black-haired boy and orange haired girl "Hmm? Renny… isn't that the guy from school" the orange haired girl asks the boy who nodded and stared at the direction that Jaune ran towards before walking into the store
As Jaune ran home he accidently stepped on a magazine that had a red-haired girl with green eyes wearing a dress on the cover. The title of the magazine reading "Pyrrha Nikos, Middle School Vanguard champion"
Chapter 1: End
Hey everyone. Enjoy the story? Don't worry about Jaune's deck. It'll be a full Altmile deck. Anyway, most of the cards will be ones that are official. I might make V versions of other cards. Mainly starters. Anyway tell me what you think. I hope everyone will be okay
