Jeni looked down into the gaping hole. She had to prove them wrong. Her idol, Chara, who used to be at school ran away to prove everyone wrong. Jeni knew that Chara had failed, but Jeni that remembering how Chara did things, she might be able to do it herself. Those who climb the mountain never return. Jeni was feeling adventurous today, so she chose today to prove them, everyone who said climbers of Mount Ebott never return, wrong. She looked down and closed her eyes as she jumped down into the hole. A surge of pure fear abducted Jeni's feelings. She landed, and lived. Some newly grown golden flowers had broke her fall. Jeni stood up, happy to be alive, and rubbed her throbbing head.
Five large sandstone pillars loomed above the scared child's head. 'These have to be man-made. You can't have natural pillars...' Jeni thought. It was worrisome, to say the least. She searched for and found her little toy knife that she brought along. Chara had given it to her. Jeni smiled and then felt her hair for her red ribbon. The ribbon once was her mother's. It was right where she left it, keeping her hair in a ponytail, just like how her mom had used it.
A dark hallway was the only place Jeni could head to. She carefully stepped through the ominous path, hoping that no creatures only seen in fairy tales would attack her. The corridor turned to the left. Jeni turned along with it. At the end of the pathway, she saw a doorway decorated with ornate purple stones. Jeni gulped as she walked through.
Jeni froze when she saw what was through this doorway. There was a big goat creature who was sitting down by a wall. She seemed to be sad. While sitting, she was as tall as Jeni was standing. Fear overtook Jeni's control of her body as she dropped her toy knife and began to back away. The toy knife clattered to the floor and the large goat noticed.
"O- oh! Why hello there, my child. I am Toriel, caretaker of these Ruins. Do not be afraid, I will not hurt you. What is your name, little one?" she said.
Jeni fearfully muttered, "My name is Jeni, Miss Toriel."
"Ah. Well, Jeni, would you like me to bring you to my house? You can stay there with me for as long as you wish. Here, let me lead you through these catacombs," Toriel said. She stood up and put a hand out for Jeni.
"Sure, Miss Toriel. I've got a question, though. You aren't human, right? What species are you, may I ask if it's not too rude? And also, are there other creatures like you?" Jeni asked. She wanted to make sure that Toriel wouldn't, oh, eat her or something. Jeni bent down and grabbed her toy knife.
"No, there are no more humans down here anymore. I am a monster, specifically a Boss Monster. I am one of the strongest types of monsters that there are. And there are indeed other monsters down here. We are trapped down here by a barrier that humans made around fifty years ago. You are the second human to fall down here," Toriel said. Jeni nodded. Jeni felt like she could trust Toriel, so she took her hand. Toriel seemed happy.
The two walked and talked through the Ruins, stopping every now and then so Toriel could either shame a monster for trying to attack Jeni or solving a puzzle.
"So, Jeni, why did you come down here? Um, do you like butterscotch? How about cinnamon? Do you have nay allergies? Oh, I'm sorry. How about you just answer the first question," Toriel said. She seemed anxiously happy.
"Well, Miss Toriel, I came down here to prove everyone that said the legend was true wrong. BUt, I guess I've failed. Oh, you probably don't know the legend, do you? There's a legend about Mount Ebott, which is the mountain we're under. Those who climb the mountain never return. Now I understand why that's true," Jeni answered.
"Aha. So that's why she- I mean, um, okay! So, what is your favorite food?" Toriel said.
Jeni became curious. Who was she? Jeni didn't want to be rude, so she answered Toriel's question. "I always love on a chilly fall morning to have doughnuts and cinnamon apple cider. I also like butterscotch ice cream a lot."
Toriel smiled. "Jeni, my child, do you have any allergies?"
"I'm allergic to spider bites and I'm allergic to horses, but that's all," Jeni answered. It seemed to calm Toriel when Jeni would answer. She looked like she was remembering something happy.
"Ah, good! So, Jeni, how old are you?" Toriel asked.
"I'm nine!" Jeni said happily.
"So, you are still in school, right? And you need a place to stay, right?" Toriel very nervously asked. Jeni nodded twice. "So, Jeni, my child, would you like to stay with me for at least nine years? I could use the company. I would also be able to teach you and you would be protected by me. It would help us both!" Toriel seemed very happy by this.
Jeni considered this. School on the surface was most definitely not fun, but maybe with Toriel it might be. A smile slowly crept onto Jeni's face. "Yeah! I would love to, Miss Toriel!" Toriel's smile grew and she hugged Jeni. Toriel started to cry of happiness. Jeni noticed that Toriel's hugs felt a lot like how her mom's hugs were.
"Jeni, my child, you do not have to call me 'Miss Toriel' anymore," Toriel said.
"Okay, mom," Jeni said. It felt so good to call someone that name again.
"Wh- what?" Toriel asked. She seemed stunned.
"I called you mom, Miss Toriel. Is that not okay? I'm sorry," Jeni said. She really, really didn't want to offend Toriel.
"I was just not expecting another hu- a human to call me mom. But, Jeni, don't you already have someone on the surface that you use that name for?" Toriel asked. Jeni began to cry a little.
"Well, I did. My mom got cancer three years ago. She died last month. But, it's fine. I can remember her always..." Jeni said. Toriel hugged Jeni again. Toriel stood, now carrying Jeni.
"My child, would you like me to sing for you?" Toriel asked. Jeni looked at Toriel with watering eyes and nodded.
"On one of these days,
An angel will fall,
And then this maze,
Will go empty.
We will be free,
Everyone here,
Even you and me,
Free forever.
On one of these days,
An angel will fall,
And in our haze,
We will become free.
By death maybe,
Or physically
Free,
We will be freed from the underground.
This is the tale
Of the Deltarune.
This is our
Undertale," Toriel sang.
Jeni smiled as the song went on. Toriel had a beautiful singing voice. It was soothing and made Jeni happy. Jeni turned and hugged Toriel. She began to fall asleep. Toriel smiled. They were both happy.
