A is for Arterial Bleed
"10-1, 10-1, shots fired at the police, officer down, roll an ambo to my location now!" Hailey yelled over the radio.
"Come on Jay, stay with me," Hailey pleads with him as his eyes start to close. "No, no, no, no, no, Jay! Jay, come on, keep your eyes open, that's it."
Hank came around the corner and kneeled down next to Jay's limp body and helped Hailey apply pressure as the rest of Intelligence joined them. The second they heard Hailey's voice over the radio calling for an ambulance they came running.
The offender they had been pursuing was supposedly looking to sell armor-piercing rounds. They were trying to buy them first, but one of the offender's right hand man recognized Hailey from the news and they started firing.
Jay jumped in front of Hailey to protect her, getting shot full of bullets in the process. Hailey had managed to drag him into an alley, only to find at least 4 bullet holes in Jay's vest. She called for an ambo, but he was losing blood, fast.
As Hank arrived he helped her keep pressure, but Jay was fading quickly.
"Jay, come on, I can't lose you, Jay, not like this," Hailey pleaded with him just as his eyes fell shut.
Brett and Foster finally got there and froze when they saw Jay, lying on the ground, in a pool of his own blood, and Hailey on the verge of tears next to him, trying to keep the blood in his body.
"Oh my god, Jay?" Brett yelled as they ran towards the team, who had circled around Jay.
They knelt down and exchanged looks as they saw how much blood he had already lost.
"Alright, Hailey, Voight, I need you guys to hold these pieces of gauze on these wounds, while we intubate him," Brett began as Jay's eyes snapped open and he started coughing up blood.
"Okay, Foster, we need to release the air in his lungs," Brett said as Foster began releasing the air.
Brett intubated and they loaded him into the ambulance as fast as they could, Voight and Hailey joining them.
The rest of Intelligence speeded after them. When they arrived at the hospital, Rhodes was waiting for them, and when he saw Jay, he immediately called to Maggie to get Will out of the ED.
"Alright, he's losing too much blood, he needs surgery, now!" Rhodes yelled as Jay was wheeled inside.
"Jay? Oh my god, Jay! What the hell happened to him!" Will yelled, who was currently being held back by Natalie, Maggie, and Ethan.
"Will, you need to let Rhodes treat him. He's the best we have, Jay's in good hands," Natalie tells him.
"What happened to my brother?!" Will yelled.
"Will, calm down, please," Natalie said, leading him to the break room.
"No, I'm not going anywhere until I know how my brother is doing!" Will yelled just as Hank and Hailey started walking towards them, with blood still on their hands.
"Is that Jay's blood?" Will said, grabbing Hank's shirt. "What happened to him!"
"Will, calm down. Let's go and talk," Hank tells him, and Will lets him lead him to the break room this time.
"What the hell happened?" Will asks the minute the door closes.
"We were doing a deal, there were armor-piercing rounds about to go out on the street. They recognized me, and they started firing. Jay jumped in front of me to protect me. He, uh, he got hit," Hailey said.
"How is he?" Will asks, turning to Natalie.
"I'll go check," she says, leaving the room.
By the time she returned, all she could say was that it was bad, and that the surgery would take a while.
That was 7 hours ago. Rhodes finally returned with news.
"It was a tough surgery. We found 7 bullets, mainly in his chest, abdomen, and shoulder. Two of the bullets hit arteries, one in the shoulder, and one in the chest, which is why he lost so much blood. We were able to repair all the bleeds, so he should be fine. We have him up in the ICU, you can see him now," Connor says.
"Alright, thanks Connor," Will says, leading Intelligence to Jay's room.
Tears came to Hailey's eyes as she saw Jay lying in the bed. He looked so weak, but so peaceful at the same time. She slowly moved to his bedside and could see the thick bandages through the hospital gown. She sat down next to him on the bed and grabbed his hand. His eyes opened slightly, and she laughed a little bit.
"You really scared me," she whispered.
"Sorry. I just couldn't let you get hurt," he whispered back.
She smiled at him, "Don't do that again."
"I'll try my very best not to," he smiled back slightly.
