Home again.
During a walk in Washington Park, Shane McInerney looks back on her three long months of absence and her return to Denver. This short fanfiction is inspired on the end of the movie "Higher ground" . The characters belong to the talented Martha Williamson.
Shane McInerney smiled as she strolled through the paths of Washington Park in Denver. She wore that orange dress she loved so much and kept walking when she stopped to look at a flowerbed of pink roses. But one rose among the other roses caught her attention. It had little red spots and Shane already liked it. She leaned over to pick it and hung it in her hair before resuming her walk. Since her long absence of three months, Shane was trying to get on with her life. The sound of explosions, long sleepless nights, and endless hours working on endless series of numbers had exhausted her mentally. Writing letters was the only way she could connect with the things she cared about most.
Thankfully, since her return to Denver, she could count on the support of the POstables to help her, but it was in prayer that she had found the energy to get through the difficult time she had spent out of the country.
Shane then arrived near a lake, not far from a playground. She sat down to look up at the sky and in the distance at the horizon.
Flashback
"Steve, tell me the truth. I'm here because you need me or because you want me," Shane asked.
"The crisis is long over. But, if you must know, I'm still in love with you," said Steve.
"So you haven't been completely honest with me. Steve, you're a good person, but you know it's over. "Shane said.
"You've always blamed me for not being around a lot present. Today I've changed and I am and you're telling me it's over," says Steve.
"Today I love someone else, Steve," says Shane.
"Oliver, right? You love a man because he gave you an old, creaky swing in Denver. I can get you anything you want, Shane, anything at all," added Steve.
"That's just it, Steve, it's not about gifts or material things. But you can't give me what Oliver can give me. It's much more than that.
"Oliver never says what he really thinks. What is ...?" Steve asked.
"I can't tell you about it. But, I can only tell you that he is caring, generous and that I love him with all my heart, just the way he is. I'm going back to Denver. Goodbye, Steve," said Shane.
She took off her sandals to put her feet in the fresh clear water and waded her feet in the water. She smiled long when she remembered more pleasant things, her first kiss on the steps of the Ephlat Lounge and her tender reunion with Oliver. Together they are cultivating a sweet, sincere and calm love. Oliver wanted to keep things professional at work and their relationship a secret. Shane had completely endorsed the idea. Especially, since she wanted to preserve the blooming rose of their budding love. She closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them and saw a reflection next to her, Oliver's reflection in the water.
The postal detective bent down, and Shane tilted her head back to give him a tender kiss on the cheek. Oliver handed her an ice cream cup and sat down beside her.
"So how did you find me," Shane asked with a smile.
"Oh well, a little bird told me where to find you," Oliver said smiling." On a beautiful June afternoon on a Saturday, I'm sure you'd be at the park. As a matter of fact, I wanted to see you. How are you?" Oliver asked.
"I'm very well. I'm sorry I haven't been go to work this week," said Shane.
"There is no rush and you take all the time you need," Oliver answered.
"That's kind. I'm so happy to be home again." said Shane.
"Me too, Shane, me too," Oliver said, holding out a spoon and smiling.
They ate their ice cream while looking at the lake.
The end.
