Don't Go Breaking My Heart
Author's Note: Hoo boy, my first Persona 5 fanfic! This has been on my mind for a long time, but now I'm actually deciding to do something about it. With Persona 5 Royal coming out soon, I figured that there wouldn't be a better time to do this. Akira/Ren and Ann might be my favorite ship in the game. These two are just so cute together, lol. Anyway, hope you guys enjoy!
Intro Music: Persona 5 - Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There
Chapter 1: Reunion
Six months. It's been six whole months since the Phantom Thieves were all together and saved the world from a literal god. It was truly a battle for the ages, and the one who dealt the finishing blow was Joker, the leader of the Phantom Thieves. Cool, calm, and collected, he was the one that kept everyone on the right path throughout all the chaos. He's impacted each and everyone of his teammates for the better, inspiring them to become a better person than what they were before.
It's only one of the reasons why everyone was hurt to see him go back home.
After being on probation for a whole year, he was finally free to go back home, go back to his regular life after Shido messed everything up for him. Though, it's funny looking back on the whole thing now. If Shido never gave Akira those bogus charges, he would have never met the friends he has today. Ann, Ryuji, Yusuke, Makoto, Futaba, Haru, Morgana, Sojiro… I guess in that way, Akira can thank Shido for that.
Ever since Akira's departure, his friends have been doing pretty well. Ryuji is in the best shape of his life and is the captain of the track team. Makoto, as usual, is at the top of her class in literally everything. Yusuke's never been prouder of his paintings, Futaba's been breaking out of her shell even more, Haru is as free as ever, Sojiro's coffee has never tasted better, and Ann's aspiring model career is really beginning to take off. Morgana is the only one that knows what's going on in Akira's daily life since he's the one that left with him.
But for everyone else, even with everything looking up for them, it's like a piece of them was missing. They were all celebrating their new and improved lives, but the one person that inspired them to go after their dreams wasn't here to see it.
Kinda sad, you know?
Arguably, the saddest out of all of them was Ann, but for a slightly different reason. Throughout all the adventures they were going on during the Phantom Thieves era, Ann found herself secretly developing a crush for Akira. Whenever she needed encouragement, comfort, a hug, or anything, Akira was there for her every step of the way. He never failed to make her blush either, even if it was only the simplest thing. When Akira was still with them, Ann thought about confessing her feelings, but she didn't think the timing would be right because of all the Phantom Thieves business they had to take care of. She just felt like a relationship would distract the two.
That is, of course, coming with the assumption that Akira shared the same feelings, which Ann honestly had no idea if he did or not. Akira was hard to read. He's so cool and reserved, it's almost like nothing fazes him. Still, that's why he was the leader in the first place, and it's safe to say that everything worked out in the end.
They only wish he was here.
Ann wishes he was here.
At Leblanc
It was now summertime, meaning that it was a much-needed break for the old Phantom Thieves. They all decided to get together at Leblanc to celebrate the first day of summer vacation. Spending time together at Leblanc always reminded them of the good old days. They goofed off, they laughed, they drunk some coffee, they reminisced a bit... You know, the typical things friends do when they get together.
But then there was a silence that came in the café. It lasted for a bit before Ryuji decided to break it.
"Hey guys, this might be a random question, but does anyone miss being the Phantom Thieves?" Ryuji asked, the group thinking about it.
"I'll say that I miss it in some capacity," Yusuke replied, holding his chin. "However, it's probably for the best that the world doesn't need us anymore, because that would mean there's another huge threat out there."
"I agree." Makoto added. "It was fun at times, don't get me wrong, but it was also dangerous."
"But that's what made it fun!" Ryuji exclaimed with a grin on his face.
"I think the question you're trying to ask doesn't necessarily relate to the Phantom Thieves. What you're really trying to ask is if everyone misses Akira, which would be yes." Haru said, sighing a little after saying that.
Ryuji would sigh himself too. "Yeah, you're probably right…" He would laugh a little bit, remembering the first time he met Akira. "It all happened so fast. I still remember meeting that dude like it was yesterday. Hard to believe it's already been six months since he left."
"Not only did he leave, but he took Mona with him too!" Futaba yelled, pouting as she crossed her arms.
Ann laughed at Futaba's reaction. "You miss petting Morgana, Futaba?"
"Mhm!" Futaba quickly nodded in response, still having her arms crossed.
"I'm sure you'll get the chance to pet him again." Makoto told her, smiling. "Besides, we are on summer vacation now, so there's a good chance that we could see them again."
As Makoto was trying to cheer Futaba up, Ann got lost in thought at the mention of seeing Akira again. Like, physically seeing him. Not texting, not calling, but actually seeing him. A smile formed on her face at the thought. Words couldn't describe how much she missed him.
"If they ever come back, I'll be sure to whip up an extra special cup of coffee for all of you. That would be our big celebration." Sojiro told them, Haru turning to him with a surprised look
"You have a special cup of coffee that we don't know about, Boss?" she asked.
Sojiro nodded. "Yes indeed. Though, I haven't made it in quite some time. Futaba is the only one that knows about it, so she knows of the wonder it brings. If I ever do make it again, hoo boy, it'll knock your socks off!"
The group all laughed out loud at this, having a good time with each other. It was at this moment that Ryuji's phone vibrated, catching his attention. "Oh, hold on guys. Got a text."
He reached for his phone in his pocket, bringing it out as he read the text.
Akira: I'm coming home.
BGM: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse - Home
Once Ryuji read the text, his eyes exaggeratingly popped out of his sockets. Everyone noticed this and wondered what in the world could Ryuji have possibly seen.
"FOR REAL?!"
"Did you just get traumatized all of a sudden?" Yusuke seriously asked, but then an idea came into his head. He put his fingers out, picturing Ryuji in a frame. "Actually, somebody going through a traumatizing experience might be a good idea for my next painting… Yes, yes! That's it! The intensity, the weight the history may hold on the person, it would be perfe-!"
"I'm not traumatized you idiot!" Ryuji yelled at Yusuke, cutting him off before he went on rambling about his next big painting. "I just got a text from Akira, he said he's coming home!"
"WHAT?!" The rest of the group said in unison, having excitement and shock in their voices.
"Well, we gotta get everything ready! Let's have a celebration party or something!" Ann suggested, her mind running wild.
That's when Futaba slowly got up, her moves being exaggerated as she pointed right at Sojiro like she was a commander. "Time to make that special cup of coffee! That's an order, sir!"
Sojiro smirked, suddenly brining out an enormous bag of coffee beans and slammed it on the counter anime-style.
"Consider it done."
A Few Hours Later
Everything was set up. Sojiro made his special cup of coffee, a celebration cake was made, balloons were all over the place… Really, give them credit for being able to do all that they did in only a few hours.
All that was needed now was for Akira to walk through the door.
In mere moments, a black, messy haired boy carrying a bag that had a cat inside would make it to Leblanc. He would look at the place from the outside for a moment, taking a deep breath as he took everything in, a smile appearing on his face. The cat would poke his head out, looking at Leblanc with the boy.
"Been a long time since we've seen this place, huh?" Morgana asked, Akira still staring at Leblanc.
"It's probably been too long." Akira replied, grabbing the handle of the door and walked inside. When he and Morgana got in, they were met with confetti flying into the air, some of it falling on them.
BGM: Persona 5 – Last Surprise
"SURPRISE!" They all said in unison, surprising Akira and Morgana. If that wasn't enough, they all ran towards them, their eyes becoming wide in the moments before disaster would hit.
The group tackled Akira and Morgana, giving them a group hug as Sojiro could only shake his head. Though, it wasn't in disapproval. He was happy to see Akira too, and it showed when he had a small grin on his face.
"WELCOME HOME!"
"Oh, you guys!" Akira said, being in pain right now from suddenly being tackled, but he didn't mind it.
"Morgana!" Futaba yelled, petting the cat as she couldn't help himself. It was followed by a pet from Ann, and that especially made Morgana happy.
"It's good to be back!" Morgana said, his eyes being filled with joy. Everyone would eventually get up; the room being filled with nothing but positive vibes. Everybody was finally together once again.
"Guess you never saw that one coming, huh?!" Ryuji said, lightly punching Akira on the shoulder with a grin.
"Definitely didn't." Akira replied, showing a laugh. He looked at everyone happily, telling them, "It's good to see you guys again."
"It's good to see you too, Akira." Ann told him, having a wide smile. They would all sit down with each other, wanting to know what's Akira been up to ever since he left.
"So, what have you been up to lately?" Makoto asked, being curious.
"Yes, what have you been up to lately?" Yusuke added, being curious himself.
Akira casually shrugged. "Nothing much. Go to school, study, give Morgana some fish, rinse and repeat." He said.
"I bet ya Morgana's been getting spoiled at all the fish you've been giving him." Ryuji said, smirking at the cat. "Now I know why he looks like he's gained some weight." He joked. Morgana didn't really gain any weight at all, this was just Ryuji trying to get on his nerves again.
"I see that somebody hasn't changed in the six months we've been gone!" Morgana retorted. It only took about five minutes at the most, but Ryuji and Morgana were back to arguing again.
"Alright, you two. Settle down." Akira told them, sighing. He knew the two arguing again was going to happen, so at least he wasn't surprised by it.
"Yep, I can tell the gang's back alright…" Ann unenthusiastically said. Though, there was a part of her that kind of enjoyed it. Hearing Ryuji and Morgana argue again really meant that everyone was reunited.
"Sheesh, five minutes in and you guys are already arguing?" Sojiro said, walking around and giving out multiple cups of his special coffee. "Maybe this'll calm the mood down a little."
Everyone looked at the cup of coffee, clearly being interested in how this tasted considering how much Sojiro hyped it up. Once they took a sip of it, you could say their eyes turned into anime-like hearts.
"Boss, this is so good! What kind of coffee is this?" Haru asked, Sojiro putting his finger on his lips and making a 'shhh' sound.
"Secret recipe. Not even Futaba knows."
"And I've been trying to find out for the longest time!" Futaba pointed out, everyone laughing yet again.
"This feels so good. I've missed you all so much." Akira truthfully said, taking a look at all his friends who couldn't be happier to see him.
As much as they were happy to see him, though, Akira might be the happiest out of all of them. "So, what's been going on with all of you since I've been gone?"
"Nothing's really changed. Still studying, still getting the good grades, the usual." Makoto told him.
"I worked my way back into track shape and now I'm back on the team! I'm even the captain of it!" Ryuji said excitedly.
"My paintings are becoming better by the day. I feel like they're reaching an upper echelon of style and substance." Saying this, it would give Yusuke yet another painting idea. "Style and substance… The two things that should never be apart." He muttered, closing his eyes. He would open them and gasp. "Style and substance! I've figured it ou-"
"OH FOR THE LOVE OF-" Ryuji began, cutting Yusuke off again but he would be stopped by Ann's hand, which was now covering his mouth.
"I've been working on getting out my shell more often." Futaba said, grinning.
"And I've never felt so free! It's honestly still kind of scary at times… but I'm slowly getting used to it!" Haru explained, smiling.
Sojiro would decide to give his two cents. "The café's actually getting a little busier these days compared to how you remember it. Of course, I'll always take the extra yen."
Finally, Ann would speak up. "The modeling's been going great. Everyday, I feel like I'm improving, and I really feel like something big is gonna happen for me one day." She would stop herself, giving Akira a sweet smile. "And it's all thanks to you, Akira."
Akira tilted his head. "Me?"
Ann giggled. "Yes you, silly. You've inspired all of us wayyyy more than you know. Why do you think we were all sad when you had to leave?" She pointed out, the group agreeing with her.
"She's right about that," Makoto said. "Our lives wouldn't have turned out for the better if it wasn't for you."
"You've helped us so much, dude!" Ryuji added.
"Yeah!" Everyone else said in unison, making Akira feel all warm inside.
He hasn't felt like this in a long time.
He was finally home once again.
Hours Later
The party was over. Everyone was saying their goodbyes for the time being, but it was good to know that it wasn't going to be some sad goodbye like last time. For the foreseeable future, Akira was going to spend a lot of time here.
Like, a whole lot of time.
The last person getting ready to leave was Ann, but not before she gave Akira a hug. Akira returned the favor by hugging her back. They did grow extremely close during all their adventures, and somehow, someway, it's like their bond got even stronger when they were miles apart.
"Aw, Ann. What's this for?" Akira asked, Ann not letting go of him.
"I just missed you so much… It's been awhile since we've hugged like this." She told him, their hug becoming tighter. They would then stop the hug and look into each other's eyes, both looking like they were in a trance of some sorts.
"How long do you plan on staying?" Ann asked.
Akira smiled at his friend when she asked that. "As long as you keep giving me hugs like that, I might stay forever."
Ann blushed a little when he said that. Dang it, there he goes making her blush again. Why and how was he always able to do that? "T-Then I guess I'll keep giving them to you, because I don't want you leaving again, hehe." She told him, but then an idea came to her head. "Hey, uh… Quick question. Are you free tomorrow?"
Akira gave a nod. "I should be free tomorrow. Why?"
Ann was twiddling with her thumbs a bit. God, why was she acting so nervous? It's not like she never asked this question before. "Well, I was wondering if you wanted to hang out tomorrow since it's been so long. Didn't really have a plan on what we'd be doing, but I mainly just want your company."
Akira showed Ann a sweet smile, telling her, "That would be great. I could probably care less about where we go, but as long as we're spending time together, that's all that matters."
Ann's cheeks would become even more red. Does Akira even have the slightest clue on what he does to her? "Y-Yeah! That's all that matters!" She said, trying to hide her blush out of embarrassment. Akira does see her blushing, right? "Oh boy, look at the time! I guess I should be going now!" she exclaimed, about to run out the door until Akira said something else.
"Do you want me to go with you to the train? I'd be happy to take you."
"No, I can take care of myself just fine! Thanks, though!" Ann quickly replied, running out the door and leaving a confused Akira alone in Leblanc. Afterwards, she stopped herself, her palm now slamming against her face. "What the heck was that, Ann?!" She yelled at herself, clearly being disgusted. "Real smooth, I tell ya. Real smooth…"
With Akira now being alone, he looked down at the floor and remained silent for a few moments. The happy vibe he once had soon turned into a sad, gloomy one. It was clear that he was deep in thought about something.
That's when Morgana would come out, walking over to Akira and looked up at him. "You ever gonna tell them the real reason why you're here?"
Akira remained silent, taking a deep breath as he pushed up his glasses.
"They don't need to know that." He replied, locking the Leblanc doors. Morgana sighed, wishing that there was something he could do to help, but he knew there was nothing he could do.
"Come on, let's get some sleep." Akira told him, walking up the stairs as Morgana looked at him wide eyed.
BGM: Avatar: The Last Airbender – Zuko Beach Flashback
"You're telling me to get some sleep? That's a first." Morgana stated, following Akira up the steps. Both would look at their old room, all the memories coming back to them. Late night texts, meetings, sleepless nights… This was a nostalgia trip.
He came closer to his bed and sat on it, still looking at his room while thinking about a lot of things. During his thought process, his phone vibrated. He pulled it out and saw that he got a text from Ann.
Ann: Hey, sorry for running out like that. I don't know what came over me.
Akira would text back.
Akira: Don't worry about it, you're fine.
As soon as he sent his text, Ann replied at the speed of lightning.
Ann: I'll make it up to you when we hang out tomorrow. Anyway, I meant to tell you goodnight before I ran out like an idiot… Soooo... Goodnight, Akira.
Akira read this, feeling Ann's sweet nature through the text. That's something that's always remained consistent about her.
Akira: Goodnight, Ann. Sleep well, okay?
Ann: You do the same. :)
Ending on that note, Akira put his phone away and laid on his bed, Morgana jumping up on the bed with him. Shortly afterwards, both would drift off to sleep.
