The Beginning

"Lucas. Lucas. LUCAS!" Mika was so tired of calling, Lucas his head was always in the clouds these days. "Yeah, what is it Mika?" Lucas had been coming to town early every day for the past couple weeks to help Mika with sheriff duties due to the influx of people coming to town for the state fair. It was a little tedious at times, but it kept his mind off his own troubles. Huffing to himself, Troubles, lately for Lucas that was an understatement, at least in his own mind. Women. Women were nothing but trouble. Sigh. Mark was talking more and more about what it would be like to have a mother around the house, and if he was truthful with himself, he wouldn't mind having a woman around either. Nights were getting long and a bit lonely lately. He had had his share of part-time romance, but it seemed that every time he would think about getting serious with a woman, it turned out either she lied to him or just couldn't handle the life of a simple ranchers wife. Not to mention the one woman that he asked to marry him didn't think she could live up to his deceased wife. Ann, he wondered what she was up to now a day, and was she ever coming back, maybe for a visit, possibly for more. Then there was Lue, she was a beautiful woman, down to earth, didn't too much mind the way his life was but still, something was missing, something that kept him from taking that leap with her, but for the life of him he couldn't figure out what.

"Lucas! Snap out of it. I've been talking to you for the last ten minutes. where is your head?" Finally, turning to Mika from the window, he was perched against Lucas sat at the sheriff's desk opposite him. "I'm sorry, what have you been saying, I was a little distracted." "Yea, I see.'' "Lucas, what's going on you've been awfully introspective lately anything I can help with?" Leaning back in his chair with a sigh, Lucas responded. "No, Mika, everything's fine, just thinking about the ranch and all the work coming up. So, what were you saying?"

Sighing, Mika ran a hand through his hair and continued. "I was saying that my cousin Mildred and my niece Raya will be here in a few days, so we might have a bit more help with the law duties around here." Leaning forward, Lucas replied thoughtfully. "I don't know about that Mika having a woman doing deputy duty that might not be such a good thing, its dangerous enough for a man. Probably even more so for a woman." Laughing, Mika replied. "don't you worry none Raya can pretty much take care of herself. She may not be a very good fighter, but she can ride better than most men, and she's a crack shot. Matter fact, the only one I have seen better is you." Lucas took a quick glance at his rifle in his lap. "that may be so Mika, but you haven't seen her in what 5 years a lot can change in that amount of time."

"You may be right, but I doubt it. It's in her blood. You ever heard of one of those women that ride those show horses and do the tricks on them for a living?" Lucas nodded his head, and Mika continued. "well, that was her mother. Man, she was a beauty, to just look at her in the eyes would make any man melt." Mika stopped for a minute, looking starry-eyed. "She thought Raya everything she knew from riding to being a proper lady. My brother, her father, well, he was hardcore, no nonscience rancher. He had a gun in her hand since she was born. He taught her the life of a rancher and instilled in her hard work. He never wanted her to be all show and no stay. He never wanted her to be one of those false women, as he called them." Mika stopped talking and gave Lucas a thoughtful Look. "So now that I've stopped rambling on. what's really going on Lucas?" Giving a half laugh half tired smile, Lucas stood up to walk out the door then replied. "Nothing to worry over Mika, nothing at all." As Lucas disappeared through the door, Mika smiled and said to himself. "You just wait Lucas McCain, your helpmate is coming, just give her a few days to get here."
