The sound of metal clashing echoed through the expansive room; the ring of steel sharp accentuated by harsh breathing. After a particularly hard hit ending in a thud, a swear floated up to the high ceilings.
"You're not moving your feet enough." Clint said looking down at Kate, who had landed on her ass.
Glaring up at him and the sword pointed between her eyes. "What's enough?" She asked in annoyance as she used the back of her hand to push the blade away from her face.
As she reached for her fallen sword, Clint used his foot to sweep it out of her reach and closer to him where he flipped it with a kick to land in his other hand. She looked at him in frustration.
"Preferably enough for me to not be able to knock you off balance and disarm you." He replied. "It's all about balance, this isn't like using a bow or a staff where you need that foundation. You have to be able to adapt and quickly to what your opponent is doing."
Kate got to her feet with ease and Clint turned the blade, so the handle was offered to her. She took it from him before glancing over his shoulder, seeing their audience.
Natasha was standing calmly at the edge of the training mat. "You need to get ready." The Black Widow informed the younger girl. "It's almost time to leave."
Kate nodded and looked at Clint.
"We'll continue when I get back." He said. "You did good today, just don't forget what we've been discussing, and practice while I'm gone."
"Got it." She said nodding.
Clint took her blade from her to return them to their places. "Have a good day at school." He said with a smile.
Kate smiled. "Be safe." She said hugging him. "I'll see you in a few days."
He returned the hug before he nudged her in the direction of the door, watching as she raced out to go take a shower before they had to drive out.
…
The drive from the compound to the school was a long one, so normally Sunday nights Kate would have been in the condo that Clint and Natasha had purchased before the tower was sold, but they were just getting off Thanksgiving Break, and Clint had a mission that he was leaving on today that necessitated him being at the compound so Kate had elected to stay as well. It also allowed time for more lessons.
Clint was proficient with a sword but had always been reserved in teaching her the skill no matter how much she had asked. However, after the events six months ago facing the Swordsman, he had agreed to start Kate's training with the weapon.
"What do you say to salmon for dinner?" Natasha asked. "I was craving it yesterday."
Kate looked away from the window. "Yeah sure." She said. "Want me to pick up anything on the way home?"
Natasha shook her head. "Is Peter walking you home?" She asked.
Kate shrugged. "Maybe." He did most days, but Natasha normally never asked. "Nat, is everything alright?" She asked.
Natasha smiled as they pulled up in front of the school. "Everything is fine." She said. "Have a good day."
Knowing she wouldn't get a different answer if she chose to press the issue, Kate grabbed her backpack, gave Lucky, who was in the backseat a good scratch behind the ears and got out of the corvette, walking up the stairs into the school.
She went to her locker and put away her books, reserving her needed books for the first half of the day. As she finished zipping up her backpack, she felt gentle hands grip her waist, turning her around. Familiar lips pressed against hers in a warm kiss and she melted, sliding the fingers of her left hand into soft brown hair while she gripped a fistful of the blue hoodie as it met her fingers.
When air became necessary, she leaned back against her now closed locker and smiled as her blue-grey eyes met soft brown ones. Peter smiled gently, brushing his thumb along her cheek as his fingers wrapped loosely around the back of her neck, tangling in the hair at the base of her skull while his left hand braced against the lockers.
"Good morning." She said blushing, biting her lower lip.
"Morning." He replied grinning brightly and leaning down to kiss her again.
Kate was more than content to continue kissing him but when Peter pulled back, looking down the hall, she assumed that he could hear the Principal making his morning rounds. Sighing, she pushed herself off the lockers and straightened her messy bun. "You're here early." She commented.
There weren't a lot of people on the halls at the moment given the time, but there were a few. Most paid them no mind as they walked to Peter's locker, fingers entwined.
"You're always here early when you come in from the compound." Peter said with a shrug. "I wanted a few extra minutes with you before school started."
As simple as it was, the gesture made her heart flutter. She beamed and hugged closer to his side, standing up on her toes to press her lips to his cheek.
"Okay lovebirds." An exasperated voice said behind them. "We get it, you're adorable!"
Turning they saw Ned walking up, his big smile betraying the annoyed words. Ned has been nothing but thrilled for the two, saying it was as exciting as the announcement of Reed Richards and Susan Storm's engagement—second only to Tony and Pepper's of course.
Smiling, Peter put his arm around Kate's shoulders, hers around his waist and they walked with Ned.
"How was Thanksgiving at the compound?" Ned asked.
"Interesting." Kate laughed lightly. "It's a big difference from the quiet ones on the farm to the chaos of the Avengers." Most of the time they really didn't celebrate it when it had been just her and Clint, and then later Natasha, but it was different now. "What about both of yours?"
Peter shrugged with a smile. "It was nice." He said.
Kate looked up at him. She knew holidays were hard on him and May with Ben not being there anymore, she worried about him. Peter just smiled back and leaned down to kiss her cheek quickly as he hugged her closer.
"It was good, but my crazy Aunt came to visit us this year." Ned was saying oblivious to the silent conversation. He launched in to a series of questions about an Avengers holiday that distracted the two teen heroes.
…
By the time lunch came around Peter was starving. He had skipped breakfast this morning because he wanted to be at the school early to see Kate. When she had found out he skipped a meal she had been upset considering his metabolism needed the regular intake of food, but he didn't regret it one bit. Since Kate had begun her new training, he didn't see her as much, and now that May knew about his "extracurricular activities" and Kate's connection with them, they didn't have a lot of time just the two of them.
That day that May had found out had been an experience.
A tray dropping onto the table startled him from his thoughts and he looked up to see Kate and MJ had joined them at the table. MJ, being the one to drop her tray down, looked at him like he was weird which wasn't unusual, but Kate furrowed her brow in concern. Peter just smiled back that he was fine.
"So, Peter, did you ask May if it was okay to come over this weekend and work on our physics assignment?" Kate asked casually as she picked up a French fry.
Their physics project was already done, she wanted to know if he was coming to the compound for a training session this weekend. Peter had turned down the roster spot on the Avengers, but he was still Spider-Man and she had told him on numerous occasions that he needed proper training.
"I'll ask tonight." He replied.
Kate nodded and conversations switched to casual conversation about the coming week.
…
When the final bell of the day echoed through the halls, everyone heaved a sigh of relief. Kate quickly shoved her notebook in her backpack before she headed to her locker to grab the rest of her stuff. As she was putting the last of her books in her bag, she heard Peter and Ned approaching.
"Kate, the decathlon team is meeting for pizza." Ned said.
"I can't come today." Kate said looking up with an apologetic smile. "I gotta head home."
Peter furrowed his brow. "Everything okay?" He asked.
Kate nodded. "I think so." She replied. "I'll text you later, okay? I gotta go."
"I'll walk you home." Peter said. He looked at Ned. "I'll meet you there."
Kate waited for Peter to get the rest of his things together and they said bye to Ned before heading out of the school. When they were far enough away, she looked at him. "You didn't have brush them off." She said. "I would have been fine walking home."
Peter smiled. "I know you would have." He said taking her hand.
She smiled and laced their fingers together. They hadn't seen each other in over a week so it was nice to have a second to just walk together. All too soon they made it to her building. Kate looked up at the skyscraper and sighed before turning back to Peter. "I'll see you tomorrow." She offered.
He smiled brightly at her. "See you tomorrow."
He kissed her gently, lingering just a bit before stepping back and waited until she was inside before starting down the street. Smiling to herself, she headed up to the condo.
Walking in the door, she was immediately greeted by Lucky racing up, tail wagging. "Hey boy." She said dropping her backpack to play with him. Looking up, she didn't hear any other sounds inside. "Nat? I'm home."
No immediate response, so Kate shrugged, kicking off her shoes, and moved further inside, tossing her backpack onto the sofa before going into the kitchen to get a snack with Lucky following at her heels hoping for treats as well.
She grabbed a yogurt and a spoon, and a chew for Lucky before walking back to the living room, curling up on the sofa. She tossed the chew over towards the balcony, Lucky chasing after it before trotting back to her, however, she quickly stuck out her foot blocking him from jumping onto the sofa.
"Nope, Natasha will kill me if I let you drool over her nice white couch." Kate said as she opened her yogurt. She glanced at Lucky. "Don't give me that mournful look, you know the rules."
Lucky proceeded to slobber over her toes, the chew still in his mouth, staring at her.
Kate chuckled and shook her head. However, seeing Lucky's ears prick as she heard the lock click, Kate tensed and pulled a hidden gun from the side table, aiming for the door. However, her finger quickly moved away from the trigger, pointing the gun away as she saw who walked in.
Bucky looked at the gun and her half-raised position and just shook his head lightly. "A little jittery, are we?" He asked.
"Aren't we always?" She asked.
"Fair." He replied with a shrug. "Sorry, I was supposed to be here before you got back from school."
Kate frowned. "Where's Nat?" She asked.
"Emergency mission in Prague." He replied. "I'm supposed to take you back to the compound while she and Clint are both gone."
It was small, but there had been a slight hesitance in the way that Bucky had answered the question. She narrowed her eyes slightly in a challenge. "What about school?" She asked.
"We'll bring you in every day, so you don't miss." He replied. He took in her suspicious expression and gave her the tired half smile that she had come to expect from him. "It's just a precaution Kate, you know they don't want you left completely alone."
He was saying the right things, and he seemed normal, but her instinct told her that something was wrong.
"Okay." She said after a minute. "Let me just get my stuff."
Packing a bag for the week she was ready to go in ten minutes. Attaching the collar and leash to Lucky, she shouldered her backpack as Bucky picked up her bag and they headed out to the car that he had waiting.
Pulling out her phone as Bucky drove, she texted Peter and told him she would be heading back to the compound, but she would see him at school tomorrow.
Is something going on? -P
Kate thought about what to reply for a long moment. The reality was something was always going on, the Avengers wouldn't be as busy as they were if it was quiet, but something wasn't sitting right. Glancing at Bucky, his expression gave nothing away. She looked back at her phone and typed her reply.
Unclear. – K
