Elsa sighed. "And, your majesty, it is crucial that you answer this letter that was sent to you by your great uncle.", Kai went on talking to her as they were walking through the castle's corridors towards the dining room.
Elsa sighed again. "Yes, Kai, I will. I will, after dinner. Please, I need a break now. I've been working all day. Now I need a nice and relaxing dinner with my sister and Kristoff. Please."
"Of course, your majesty. I will bring this letter to your rooms."
"Thank you.", Elsa answered with real gratitude in her voice.
She nodded at him and Kai disappeared.
They had arrived at the dining room and Elsa opened the double leaf door energetically. She stepped inside the huge and festive dining room. The long and dark wooden table was set and everything was prepared for dinner. Elsa looked around but there was no sign of either Anna or Kristoff. She frowned, when a maid entered the room with an additional candlestick in her hands. She spotted the queen, smiled and made a curtsey. "Your majesty."
Elsa smiled and walked towards her. "Good evening, Tilda. Have you seen my sister or Kristoff? They're late for dinner."
Tilda put down the candlestick. "I'm sorry, your majesty: I haven't seen them for hours."
"Well, thank you, Tilda. I'm going to search for them and then we can start dinner."
The blonde turned around and entered the hallway again. She came past her own room and walked down the hallway further. Her sister's room was on the same floor as hers, on the second floor of the east wing. The first few years of their lives they had shared this room until their parents separated them after their accident and Elsa was assigned a room further away from her sister's to limit the contact between the two of them. But this wasn't the room Elsa currently occupied. When she became Queen of Arendelle she moved into her parent's old bedroom, the room which was to be occupied by the regent and which was closer to the study rooms but even further away from Anna's room. When Kristoff moved into the castle after Elsa had saved Arendelle and after Kristoff and Anna had become a couple, he was assigned a room in the west wing on the ground floor, far away from the east wing with its dining room, the study rooms, Anna's room and Elsa's old and new room.
He wasn't allowed to live in the castle just because he was Anna's "boyfriend"; courtly etiquette would never allow a princess' "boyfriend" to move in with her. It was customary for a princess that her marriage would be arranged with a man from another royal family and she was supposed to marry this man before she could even think about living in the same castle as him. But because Elsa had decided to appoint Kristoff to the position of "Official Arendelle Ice Master and Deliverer" things were less complicated and Kristoff could have his own room in the castle which allowed the couple to spend more time with each other.
Elsa walked around another corner and towards her sister's room when she heard Anna's voice. Elsa passed Anna's room and reached the stairs, from where her sister's voice came. There they were.
"Oh! Oh, great! This will look so good!, Anna exclaimed. She stood on the stairs and watched two valets carrying a big wooden drawer up the stairs. Behind the two men there was Kristoff carrying a harness and some other stuff Elsa couldn't label. She paused at the banister and observed the scene with confusion.
"Anna... what are you doing?", she asked carefully.
Anna swirled around and spotted her older sister.
"Elsa!", she exclaimed happily. She jumped up the stairs and stopped in front of her sister.
Elsa smiled softly. "Anna, what are you doing? Dinner's ready!"
"Oh, shoot! I completely forgot! I'm sorry, Elsa! But I was just... too excited!", Anna exclaimed enthusiastically.
The two men with the drawer had already passed the two sisters and now Kristoff reached them.
"Hi, Elsa!", he said with a smile.
Elsa nodded towards him. "Kristoff.", she addressed him with her soft voice. "What are you two doing?"
Anna gestured excitedly. "So! Kristoff didn't have enough space for Sven's stuff and so I went up the attic and I found this really cool drawer that belonged to Dad and it's just PERFECT! So we asked Thom and Ralph to carry it for us."
Elsa frowned. "But... Kristoff's room is on the ground floor... in the west wing."
Anna seemed confused. "What?"
Elsa gestured towards the two men carrying the drawer. "Kristoff's room is in the west wing. Why are they bringing a drawer for Kristoff here and not to his room?", she asked confusedly.
Anna's mouth was slightly opened and she remained still for a moment when it came to her mind that her sister didn't have a clue that she and Kristoff had been sharing a room for weeks now. They had decided not to tell anyone in the castle about it as they both knew this was definitely against all rules.
"Oh...", Anna said startled. She blushed slightly and quickly looked down on the floor.
Kristoff blushed even more and had an even more worried look on his face.
After all, it was one thing for him to move into the castle after Elsa had given him an official title. But it was a whole other thing to live with a princess in her room before they were married. And in Anna's room there was only one bed.
Elsa was still confused. She alternately stared at her sister and Kristoff.
Anna looked up and said carefully: "Well... Elsa... we've actually been wanting to talk to you about this for some time now... Kristoff... he doesn't use his room anymore..."
Elsa gave Kristoff a surprised glance. "Oh! Why not? Didn't you like the room I chose for you?"
Kristoff looked up and blushed even more. "No! No, no! The room was fine! It was great, actually! Really, Elsa! It was perfect! It's just that..."
He looked at Anna for help. The brunette cleared her throat.
"Kristoff and I... well... Elsa, Kristoff moved into my room a couple of weeks ago."
Elsa blinked surprisedly and her eyes widened.
"Oh!", she exclaimed. "Oh... I... I didn't...", she stammered. Then she laughed nervously.
"Well... I... I didn't... know! So..." Now it was her turn to blush.
Kristoff gave her a timid glance. He had always wondered but didn't come to a conclusion what Elsa would think about this.
Anna tried to break the awkward silence. "Um... we've been planning to tell you but..."
Elsa tried to pull herself together again. "No... no! It's fine! You didn't have to tell ME, I mean... it's your decision, I guess. Right?" She laughed nervously again.
"Right...", Anna answered slowly. "So... you're... alright with it?"
"Well, yeah! It's... none of my business, right?", the blonde answered with a forced smile.
There was this awkward silence again. Anna sensed that Elsa didn't tell her the truth. She frowned.
Kristoff cleared his throat. "So... we're gonna get something to eat or..."
"Yes!", Elsa exclaimed, grateful to him for bringing this awkward conversation to an end. "Yes! Dinner's ready!" She turned around quickly and set off towards the dining room.
Anna and Kristoff remained still for another second and looked at each other worriedly before they followed her.
They both didn't know whether they had gone too far in Elsa's opinion. Of course, she was totally fine with Anna being with Kristoff. She was convinced that he was the perfect man for her sister and she liked him, too. She was grateful that her sister found her true love and that they were so happy with each other. Kristoff and Anna knew that. But they both didn't know how much Elsa expected them to follow the rules of courtly protocol. After all, the older sister was much more order-loving and pedantic than the younger one. Maybe she didn't approve of them sharing a room with each other, let alone a bed. Anna didn't want to overwhelm her sister with things like this. She knew that she would have to talk to her about this again.
