A/N: Moonlighting has been one of my favorite tv shows for decades. I remember first seeing it when I was about 12 years old and they were doing reruns. I instantly liked it and David Addison/Bruce Willis became my very first tv/movie crush. Hahaha! However, I always felt like they should have ended things differently… a lot differently. I understand how their hands were tied with Cybill's pregnancy at the time, but they could have fixed things between Maddie and David when she came back. However, the writers chose to have Maddie marry someone else on a spontaneous whim (not like her at all!) and that blew any chance of David and Maddie ever getting back together out of the water. Don't even get me started on season 5, can we cancel that one all together? So, here's my take on what should have happened when Maddie came back from Chicago.
How things should have ended
Maddie entered her house with anxiety, David in tow behind her. She was wobbling on her legs and her entire body trembled. God, what was she supposed to say to him? How could she ever make things right after the way she had handled things? The click of the door closing behind them sounded louder than ever and Maddie almost flinched, wringing her hands in front of her now protruding belly. Their reunion at the office had been awkward and the whole scenery hadn't been right for them to talk. Therefore, she was grateful that David had come home with her. The entire car ride back here had been in silence, though, and Maddie felt almost sick with nerves.
She certainly wasn't used to feeling this way, but hadn't that been exactly why she had run from him? Because that's what she had done; she had run home to her mommy and daddy, feeling afraid and overwhelmed by her feelings for him..
"Can I…," she started, licking her dry lips, "Can I get you anything? Coffee or something?"
She was almost afraid to look at him and focused on something directly behind him.
"Yeah, coffee sounds good."
Maddie was relieved that he had said yes. That would give her some time to think things through. She stumbled into the kitchen and made him a fresh pot, rummaging around. She boiled some water for herself. Occasionally, she glanced out of the doorway and saw that he had settled himself on her couch. His head was buried in his hands. How had they gotten here? How had she managed to get everything so strained between them? Her heart clenched with his posture; he was so hurt. She realized that she couldn't hide in there forever, he deserved better than that.
Carrying a cup of coffee and a cup of tea, she entered her living room.
"Thanks," he said, as she handed him his coffee. Their fingers brushed for a mere moment and Maddie almost hissed with the jolt that shot through her. David tried to catch her eyes, but she couldn't go there. Not yet. Not until they had talked things though.
She sat down across from him and took a sip of her tea.
"How's the baby? Is everything…?"
"Oh yes, everything is fine."
"And you? Any discomforts?"
"I'm fine as well."
"Good."
Silence. Yet again. Why couldn't she talk around him? She felt so tongue tied!
"David, I.."
"Maddie, I."
They both spoke at the same time and David laughed.
"You go first," he said.
Maddie bit her lip. She couldn't do this facing him. She felt too distracted by the chest hair that was peeking out from underneath his white shirt and the way this his half-smile made his face ten times more handsome. She carefully got up and faced her mantle instead, pretending to brush some dust away.
"I, uhm.. I'm usually not at loss for words. I know my way around the world and never had any issues with anything. Not until you came around."
She felt herself blush up to the roots of her hair and took a deep breath.
"I was always so used to being in control; with work, with money, with men… I called all the shots regarding anything in my life and I liked it that way. When I met you, everything just slipped from my hands. You were the exact opposite of the people I usually interacted with and you're bohemian lifestyle annoyed me to no end. You lacked control, responsibility and you didn't have a care in the world. Sometimes, that also made me jealous, because I couldn't let go of the reigns like that. I have to admit, maybe that's what also drew me in. The attraction was there from the get-go."
Maddie swallowed something, still afraid to turn around and see his reaction to everything that she was saying.
"I fell for you and… it was so unsuspected. I didn't know what to do with it and quite frankly, it scared me. Then Sam entered our lives and he reminded me of everything that I had always wanted in life; he was stable and serious. He would never surprise me and I would always know what to expect from him. Therefore, I let him in. However, a little voice in my head said that maybe I wanted to be surprised in life. Maybe I didn't want to know what was right around the corner. Maybe, Sam was boring. With you, I could feel free. However, I backpedaled."
She felt her heart slam against her ribcage. The moment of truth was coming.
"I've never felt for anyone, the way that I feel about you. My emotions have never been so out of place and I've never felt more vulnerable and naked than when I'm with you."
Okay, she needed to do this. She had hurt him beyond imagination, so she needed to expose herself now. It was the only way that he would ever forgive her. Slowly, she turned around and looked him dead in the eye.
"I love….you," she brought out, gasping as if she was out of breath.
David ran a hand through his hair.
"I love you too, Maddie. But.."
"No, listen. I love you! I can't… I can't breathe without you."
Maddie held her hand to her heart, trying to calm it somewhat. It was beating so fast.
"Do you have any idea how much power you have over me? With you, I lose all sense of control and it's like you've literally got my heart in your hands. For someone so used to keeping a check on those reigns, it was.. it is scary as heck! I was so afraid of my own feelings, of needing someone so much that I almost felt like dying if you weren't there, that I left before you could hurt me. Of course, I ended up hurting you in that process. Then, I found out I was pregnant and yet again, things were out of my hands. I just didn't know what to do. I should have come back and talked to you, I know, but…"
David stepped forward, closing the gap between them.
"You were afraid," he answered for her.
Maddie felt a tear sliding down her cheek and nodded, her throat feeling so constricted in that moment that she couldn't speak.
"Now you know how I felt. You did to me what you were so afraid of having done to yourself."
"I know. I'm so sorry," Maddie cried, unable to hold back the sobs that escaped her.
"So where does this leave us now? What do you want, Maddie? Do you know that?"
She grabbed a hold of his hand almost shyly and squeezed it tight.
"If you'll have me, I want you; I want to make a family with you and this baby."
David seemed to swallow something.
"What if… uhm.."
"What if what, David? Tell me," Maddie encouraged him.
"What if this baby is Sam's? Are you going to go back to him? Because if that's the case…"
Maddie put her hands on David's chest and took a deep breath.
"I would never get back together with him. I would tell him, yes, and he would be a part of our lives. But no, he's not the one for me. Besides, this baby being his is highly unlikely."
"What?"
David's voice sounded raspy and Maddie could detect a bit of hope in there that made her heart jump.
"I kept up with my check-ups in Chicago and due to the ultrasounds, we could detect how far along I was. If this baby would be Sam's, I should be a bit further along. It's 99 percent a done deal that this is an Addison."
For a moment there, Maddie thought that she saw his eyes water up a bit, but it was gone before she could be sure that she had seen it. His eyes dropped down to her stomach.
"Can I?" he asked hesitantly.
"Of course."
From the moment his hands touched their unborn child, all wounds that were inflicted seemed to heal. Maddie could see a weight being lifted from his shoulders and she, herself, didn't feel all that afraid anymore. They could make this work.
David's hands left her stomach and he pulled her in for a hug.
"I missed you," he whispered into her hair.
"I missed you too."
He kissed her cheek, once, twice, and then continued on towards her throat. A shiver ran through Maddie, in anticipation of what he was going to do.. what needed to be done. He remained very gentle at first, running his fingers across her spine teasingly. His lips caressed the sensitive skin below her ear. He always was a master at build up, Maddie thought.
Then, there was no stopping it. His mouth descended on hers as if he had been in the desert for too long and finally saw water. It was feverish and desperate and Maddie almost felt her legs give out when his tongue searched entrance into the hot cavern of her mouth. He was certainly holding no prisoners. Maddie allowed herself to feel every emotion that was coursing through her body and she finally understood now why she had been so afraid; he stripped everything bare for her and there was no hiding from it. She loved him so much that it physically hurt and in knowing that, he had the potential to destroy her if he wanted to. Of course, he had never done so and instead, she had ripped him apart. She could feel it in his kiss; it was almost punishing. Tears sprang in her eyes as she realized the depth of his pain.
"David," she breathed, pulling away from the kiss. "I love you."
When David leaned in for another kiss, she stopped him by placing her index finger across his lips.
"You need to hear this; I love you so much and I will never.. ever.. leave you again, do you hear me? I wouldn't care if the world was falling apart around me, no one would be able to drag me away from you."
David blinked.. once… twice… and then her words sank in. He smiled the most beautiful smile she had ever seen on him and then he leaned in again. This time, she let him. The kiss was different immediately. His tongue massaged hers in a way that was so soft and yet heart-stopping, that Maddie felt like she would die if he didn't reunite them soon. A moan escaped her when she began to feel herself throb.. there.. Her fingers pried at his shirt, pulling the buttons open and exposing his chest.
"Maddie," he groaned. "Are you sure that…" His voice skipped as she placed soft kisses on the skin below his right nipple. "Are you sure that this won't hurt the baby in any way?"
"I'm very sure," Maddie breathed. To prove her point, she released him and began to walk up the spiral staircase that lead to her bedroom. He was right behind her, following her until they reached her bed. David began to unbutton her dress, kissing every bit of naked skin that he could find, until the garment pooled at her feet, along with her bra and panties. Then, Maddie began to feel a bit less bold. She cowered a bit and put her hands in front of her belly.
"What's wrong?" David asked in a hoarse voice behind her. He put his hands on her shoulders and turned her around to face him. He looked concerned.
"It's.. You've never seen me.. like this."
David frowned.
"Like what? Pregnant?"
Maddie nodded and looked down, feeling her face turn crimson.
"Hey. You've got nothing to be embarrassed about." David put his index finger below her chin and raised her face up to meet his eyes. "Look at me. Do you have any idea what an incredible turn on it is for a man to know that the woman in front of him is pregnant with his child? You look beautiful."
He pulled her hands away from her belly and looked at her from head to toe, his eyes dark with lust and love. Then, he kissed her, reassuring her. Maddie put her hand on his belt and shivered, still feeling a bit overwhelmed by everything.
"It's okay," David whispered.
Every inhibition Maddie had felt until that moment fell away when she noticed how turned on he was indeed. She quickly pulled at his belt and opened up his pants. They fell to his feet as they walked backwards towards the bed. David sat down and pulled her in his lap.
"How are we going to do this?" David asked, suddenly a bit unsure himself about working around her protruding belly. Maddie looked down at their entwined position and smiled.
"I think that this should work just fine," she said, and pushed him back on the bed.
They kissed some more, but then, there was no stopping it. Maddie sank down on him with a sigh and everything was right in the world again. How could she have been so scared of this? Of him? They moved together perfectly. No one in her life had ever come close to being the skilled lover that David Addison was. He brought her brink and back so many times that she almost felt like pulling his hair and screaming at him to make her topple over that edge already! Of course, she wasn't going to do that and she was never going to tell him that he was the best that she had ever had. No need to inflate his ego anymore! He had other plans, though, and by the umpteenth time that he denied her release, she was so far gone she didn't care what came across her lips anymore.
"God, David Addison, would you just get me there already!" she snarled.
"Yes ma'am," he smirked beneath her.
It was intense… so intense that she almost blacked out. When she finally came to her senses again, she was lying on her right side with her head on his shoulder. He was breathing just as hard as she was.
"I would dare to say that that was the best one yet," David grinned.
Maddie hid her face and groaned.
"How do you do that?"
"What?"
"Bring out this side of me that I've never seen before. It's embarrassing," she said, with a blush marring her features.
David propped himself up on one arm and looked down at her.
"It's one of my many specialties. David Addison, guaranteed to make you.."
"David!" Maddie swatted at him. "You're a vile creature!"
"I know. It's one of the things you love about me."
"Actually, it was also one of the things that worried me," Maddie confessed. "You were always all about the women. What if I would be just one of them? I'm sorry, I don't mean to make you sound like that.."
David stroked a strand of hair away from her damp forehead and smiled.
"I thought that you had established from our time in New York together that I talk a big game, but that's about it. After what my ex-wife pulled…"
"Yes, you were closed off from love."
"Maddie, when I say 'I love you' I don't take it lightly. You said that you were scared of your feelings for me. Well, that was the same way for me. I had barely let anyone in after Tess and then Gillian… How do you think I felt when I told you my feelings and you left me?"
Maddie hid her face in her hands.
"Okay, now I feel horrible all over again. I guess we can both say that we got scared. How about we try not to be scared anymore and let the other one in? We need to trust each other."
"I couldn't agree more…."
