Superman was half-way across the world in Ecuador responding to cries for help from victims of common volcanic activity when he received a call on his communicator. "Watch Tower to Superman. Come in Superman." He just finished making a trench that was several hundred feet deep. It encircled the base of the volcano to prevent the lava from destroying anything else in its path. Once he was done he answered the call, "This is Superman, but who's this? Where's J'onn?" His communicator was breaking up because he was slightly out of reception range. He flew closer towards the ground descending from the sky. When he did so he could hear more clearly. "Don't make me say my name over the communicator," said Batman. "You. I should have known. What is it?" asked Superman. "Just a reminder. Don't you have a date tonight with Lois?" With that being said Superman took off faster than a speeding bullet propelling himself towards the sky. He flew as fast as he could back to Metropolis in a streak of blue, red, and yellow to get to her in hopes of keeping their date.

As their evening came to an end Lois and Clark rode the elevator up to their apartment. "You have to tell me how you were able to afford all of this," said Lois. He treated her to a romantic evening dining at one of finest bistros in town. Then they had the privilege of watching Carmen from box seats at the Metropolis Opera House. They were arm in arm while she rested her head on Clark's shoulder as he escorted her off of the elevator. He chuckled to himself before replying, "Would you stop being a nosy reporter for two seconds, and just accept that we finally had a nice evening out together." She lifted her head off of his shoulder once they made it to the door. "Nosy? Speaking of…" she says smiling wrapping her arms around his neck bringing him closer for a kiss. "Lois…" he says while opening the door. Just then the lights in their apartment came on simultaneously as their closest friends and co-workers pop out. "SURPRISE!" People from the Daily Plant including Jimmy Olsen, Lana Lang, Perry & Alice White, and two members of the Justice League including Bruce Wayne and Diana were there in honor of celebration. Clark blushes as Lois stops kissing him.

Everyone cheers, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOIS!" She stands there with an ear to ear grin, smiling in disbelief. "Wow. I'm shocked. I honestly don't know what to say," she says. There were gold and silver party balloons, and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY banner hung over the fireplace. Lois spots Bruce Wayne whom she approaches, and kisses on the cheek while embracing him in a hug. "Happy Birthday," says Bruce. She whispers in his ear, "Thank you for dinner and the opera." He tries to tell her that he has no idea what she's talking about, but Lois looks at him knowingly. He winks at her, "You're welcome," replies Bruce. Diana comes over to Lois hugging her. "Happy Birthday! You look beautiful! Were you surprised?" she asks. "Yes I was," replies Lois. Clark stands off to the side with Bruce while watching Diana and Lois chat. "What do you suppose they're talking about?" asks Clark. He swirls the champagne around in his glass then sets it on the edge of the mantlepiece. Bruce observes the two women talking as Lois and Diana glance in their direction and laugh. He replies, "If I had to guess… I'd say you. So was she surprised?" Clark looks around the room then over at Lois while smiling replying, "Yes. Although I don't know how I'll ever repay you. Y'know reporter salary and all." Bruce shakes his head, "Don't mention it. You being able to spend time with her is payment enough."

The party wound down, guests departed, and Lois and Clark bid everyone "Good Night" leaving the couple alone in their apartment. Clark cleaned up the mess of plates and glasses while she retired for the evening in their bedroom. Lois took her jewelry including her earrings and necklace that Clark got her as a gift, off placing them in a jewelry box on her dresser. She slipped off her heels, sat on the edge of the bed, and laid back. She clasped he hands over her stomach while staring up at the ceiling fan watching it go round and round. He leaned up against the door frame with his hands stuffed in his pockets admiring her as she lay on the bed. "Mind if I join you?" asked Clark as he made his way over to her. She got up from the bed meeting him halfway then turned around sweeping her hair over her shoulder. "Would you mind helping me with my zipper?" He cleared his throat before replying, "No. Not at all." He undid the top hook of Lois' dress then pulled the zipper down torturously slow. At this close proximity to her, he closed his eyes while inhaling deeply taking in her intoxicating scent ⏤ she smelt of floral shampoo, and fruity body spray or perfume of some sort. His heart raced a little in the excitement. "There. It's down." Lois pushed her dress straps off of her shoulders letting the dress pool around her ankles before stepping out of it completely. She stood before him in nothing but her black silk laced bra and panties.

"Wait here I have a surprise for you." She smiled at him before grabbing something out of the top drawer of her dresser then shut herself in the bathroom. "It's your birthday and you have a surprise for me?" He made himself comfortable on the bed waiting for her. However, when she took longer than anticipated Clark grew concerned. "What are you doing in there? Is everything all right?" He got up from the bed to listen for her through the door; sure he could have used his super hearing to listen or x-ray vision to see through the door, but he promised her early on in their relationship to never use his powers on her. As he listened he could hear her crying, and it made his heart sink a little. He was afraid of this very incident happening, which Bruce warned him of; he told Clark that women were particularly sensitive when they turn forty for reasons men may never understand. He thought the worst; hoping that she wasn't trying to harm herself. "Lois? May I come in?" He shimmied the door knob thankful that it wasn't locked. The door opened gently as Clark popped his head in to the sight of her on the bathroom floor. Lois was on her knees with her hands in her face crying in a negligee he's never seen her wear before.

He took a knee then sat beside her draping his arm around her as she cried. They stayed like that for a while longer as he stroked her hair in a comforting manner, and eventually she began to calm down. He offered her some toilet paper to dry her eyes and blow her nose with. She gladly took it from him then decided to explain herself. "Oh, look at me," she said getting up from the floor. She went over to the mirror. "I'm a mess. My hair, my make-up is running." He tried to brighten her mood asking, "Is that negligee new? I like it. You look very sexy." He got up from the floor, stood behind her, and wrapped his arms around her waist resting his head on her shoulder. She smiled at him for a moment, but it quickly faded as she pushed him off of her. "Oh, stop it!" She walked out of the bathroom back into the bedroom turning the light out on him leaving him alone in the dark. "Lois you're being unreasonable," he argued. "What is this about?" Part of him knew, but maybe she would feel better if she actually discussed it. He was willing to listen. "Unreasonable? I'm being unreasonable! I'll tell you what's unreasonable," she retorted. Clark was beginning to regret mentioning saying anything at all.

"Why do we have to grow old?" she asked plopping back down on the bed. He stood there listening intently at what she had to say. He paused to ponder for a moment knowing these were dangerous waters so he tried to tread lightly. "Getting older is apart of life," he replied. She rephrased her question, "Fine. Why do I have to grow old? Why do I have to get older, and you get to stay young?" He stood there looking at her flabbergasted. Although it was true. She was aging more noticeably every day, but he didn't comment to her about it. "What do you mean? I age. Maybe not as fast. I'll admit my Kryptonian DNA slows the process, but it doesn't make me immortal or immune to aging." He can tell by the look on Lois' face that she didn't know that. "Come here," he asked taking her by the hand. They went back into the bathroom where there was better lighting. She had him stand next to her in the mirror. He took his glasses off placing them on the countertop. He stood facing her taking both of her hands in his placing them on his face. "Feel and see for yourself," he told her guiding her hands on his face.

She looked more closely at him than she ever had before while staring at his face. It was true. He was aging. Albeit at a rapidly slower rate, but she could see and feel the laugh lines on his face. She smiled while laughing to herself as she gently traced the lines with her fingers. "I got all upset over nothing," she said. "I guess I owe you an apology." Lois placed her hands on either sides of his face looking at him lovingly in the eyes while apologizing to him. "Apology accepted," he replied. She turned to leave the bathroom, but hesitated. "Wait. How do I know this isn't some trick? How do I know you didn't use one of your powers or abilities to make yourself seem older so I don't feel so badly about myself," she asked. Clark gave her a stern look before responding, "Lois, you of all people should know that even I don't have that kind of ability." She eyed him up and down then walked away with a satisfactory grin on her face. They lay there in bed with Lois in Clark's arms as her body relaxed, her breathing became shallow, and her heart rate slowed as she fell asleep. He made sure she was really asleep before slipping his arm out from under her rolling onto one side.

He got up then returned a few short moments later. She rolled over glancing at the clock on the nightstand; the time read 3:00 AM. He made his way over to her side of the bed, admired her sleeping form, and leaned over to place a kiss on her forehead. She stirred awake in bed. "Clark? Is that you?" Her eyes were heavy with sleep, but as they adjusted she could tell he was wearing something entirely different. "Shhh. I didn't mean to wake you go back to sleep," he said. He sat in a chair in the corner taking off his cape and boots. "Was someone in trouble?" she asked. He looked at her confused. "I just came back from Ecuador. I told the Watch Tower to tell you that I would be late." Her eyes flew open as she sat up quickly in bed. "Wait? You mean to tell me that you just got here? Right now?" she asked. He peeled back the covers, laid down beside her, and cuddled. "Yes. Am I missing something?" he asked. Lois curled up next to him. "You're here now that's all that matters." She rolled atop of him kissing him passionately. Meanwhile, through the view of a set of binoculars on a Metropolis rooftop across the street, Batman was watching. J'onn J'onzz shape-shift out of Superman's form while descending on the rooftop next to Batman. "What do you see?" he asked. "He finally made it," replied Batman. "Remind me again how what we did to Lois doesn't count as lying or deception," asked J'onn. Batman hands him his binoculars so he can look through them for himself. "That's how," he replies. J'onn looks through the binoculars shocked commenting, "They're having… relations." Batman smiles, "Happy Birthday Lois."
