Here's chapter one.
I own only my original characters, nothing else.
The day began like any other day. The sun shined through the cracks and holes in the Imperial Walker Owen had come to call home. He was about twenty years old, five foot ten inches tall with a good build. He wore mainly black and dark brown robes built for living in a desert, along with a hooded, grey cloak. He had long, dark brown hair that he kept in a ponytail and small beard growing.
He got up and looked around to see his partner and best friend, Rey. When he crash landed on the desert wasteland of a planet known as Jakku six years ago, she was scavenging the wreckage of a nearby Star Destroyer. She quickly sped towards him and saved him from the quicksand he was in. She helped him to the walker and nursed him back to health, becoming good friends in the process.
'...Six years now,' he thought to himself as memories played through his head. He began hearing the noises of burning buildings, explosions and lightsabers clashing against each other.
"...Six years since that day now," he said out loud.
"Six years since what day?," a voice behind him said, and he turned to see that Rey had woken up.
"Oh, um... since we met."
"...Oh yeah, it has been six years. Should thank you for that."
"Yeah? Why's that?"
"Hauling a half-dead fourteen year old boy out of a crashed X-Wing wasn't really normal in the life of a thirteen year old scavenger like me at that time," she answered.
"Really? That's why? Not because I eventually became your best and first friend? Or that I became your partner in scavenging?," he teased and she teased right back and nodded, the smirk never leaving her face for a single moment. "...Well, I'm happy that me almost dying amused you."
There was a slight moment of silence before they both laughed.
"Hahaha... come on, you. Let's get to work," Rey said, getting up and grabbing her metal staff.
She walked out of the walker, Owen watching her, smiling to himself slightly. He looked to his right and knelt over to a secret compartment on the side of the transport, where something wrapped in cloth was hidden. He unwrapped it and stared at it for the longest time, putting himself into a trance of sorts. It was only until shouting from outside caused him to come to his senses.
"Owen, come on!! Let's go!!"
"Right, right!! I'm coming!!," he yelled back and he hid it once again.
He got his gear and quickly ran out, climbing onto Rey's speeder. They then sped off towards the Star Destroyer wreckages.
For most of the day, they were scavenging the wreckages for intact and valuable parts. It was a difficult task considering the fact the wrecks were massive and could easily get lost, and they have been scoured by scavengers before and so are cleaned out.
"Hard to believe that these things were once instruments of war and death," Owen said.
"Yeah, it really is," Rey said. "How are you doing on parts?"
"Well, my bag is full, so I'm just waiting on you."
She nodded and turned back to go find more scrap pieces.
As he waited outside of the destroyer, Owen looked at his wrapped right hand as memories flashed through his mind.
Flashback
A much younger looking Owen was outside under the sun of another planet, one where he was surrounded by rocky hills and grass fields. It was a somewhat rainy planet, but that never bothered him.
He turned to see a bearded man in robes similar to what he was wearing walking over to him.
"Owen, what's wrong?," he asked.
"Oh, nothing," he answered. "Just enjoying how nice the day is before it gets bad."
"Ah, I see. Well, we must go now, unfortunately. The next lesson will begin soon."
He nodded and they began walking back towards a hill as the memory shifted.
Now, Owen found himself in a big rainstorm as people around him were being killed. Then a men in a dark mask came at him with a red blade and in a flash of light, a great pain overwhelmed him as darkness closed in.
"Owen...?"
Present Day
Owen was pulled out of his trance by Rey shaking him by his shoulder.
"Owen? You alright?," she asked, quite concerned.
"...Oh y-yeah," he said unconvincingly. "Yeah, I'm alright. Just a... flashback. Not a good one."
"Did it have something to do with that?," she asked, pointing to his hand, and he nodded. "Want to talk about it?"
"...Maybe later. You good to go?"
"Yes, I'm ready. Let's get out of here," she said and they both headed back to the speeder. "But don't think that this is over."
Owen said nothing to this as they sped off towards Niima Outpost, where they trade in the scrap pieces in for food portions. It wasn't much, only a few shelters made from ship fragments and poorly set up tent canopies. When the two scavengers arrived, Owen instantly took notice of the large ship that was there, belonging to the one in charge of the outpost, the criminal Unkar Plutt.
"Don't even think about it, Owen," Rey said sternly. "Last time you tried to get on the ship, we lost our portion privileges for two weeks."
"...One day I'm gonna take that ship and leave this place," he said quietly as they sat down under a canopy and began to clean up the pieces they had. "I'm gonna travel the galaxy, find a new place to settle down, begin a new life. And I'll be taking you with me, Rey."
"Owen, you know I could never do that. I have to wait for my family."
"Why wait? With that ship we can go out and find them."
"And what if they come back and I'm not here?!," she said, becoming a little agitated.
"...At least think about it," he said. "Please, think about it, Rey. You can't spend the rest of your life in this barren wasteland, and I could never forgive myself if I left you here when I could've brought you with me."
"...Let's just get our portions and go home," she said in a tone that said their discussion was over.
Then Owen grabbed her hand with his wrapped right one and gave her a look. After a moment of looking into each other's eyes, she slowly nods, which he returns.
They go over to Unkar Plutt and he inspects the pieces.
"What you two have brought me today is worth um... one quarter portion each," he said and placed that amount in front of them. "Now go. I don't trust you here anymore, boy."
They took the portions and went back home, just as the sun was beginning to set. After adding water to their portions, they expanded and became bread. They quickly began to eat as they sat outside looking out at the desert around them.
"I'm heading out," Owen said after finishing his food.
"Where do you go every night?," Rey asked out of curiosity.
"... I go out to watch the sunset, look at the horizon. It was something my father did, and I guess it's just in my blood."
"Alright, but as usual-."
"Watch out for others like Teedo. Yes, mother," he said and they both chuckled at this and he walked away.
But as he did, they both heard whirring and a noises of a struggle nearby. They ran off in the direction of the noises and saw another scavenger attempting to capture a lone droid. Rey quickly got both of their attention by yelling out towards them. She handed the staff she carried to Owen who then held Teeto back and he told him to get lost as Rey freed the droid. The scavenger decides to leave and the droid began to make angry noises but Rey shushed him.
"That's just Teedo. Wants you for parts. He has no respect for anyone," she said and she knelt down. "Your antennas bent."
As she repaired it, Owen then got a good look at the droid and he silently gasped as he recognized it.
'Poe's droid!!,' he thought to himself.
"...So, little droid, what's your business here?," Owen asked and after a moment as the droid seemed to recognize him as well and then beeped something.
"Classified, huh? Yeah, us too. Very big secret," Rey said as she got up and they began to walk off. "Niima Outpost is that way, stay off Kelvin Ridge. And keep away from the Sinking Fields in the north, you'll drown in the sand. Trust me, he knows what I'm talking about on that last one."
They began to walk away but Owen was hesitant about it.
"Rey, we can't leave him alone, at least not at night," Owen said.
"Owen, we can't have a droid with us, we'll have targets on our backs for his parts. No."
Then the droid beeped again and after a moment, Rey sighed frustratingly and featured it to follow them. It beeped in happiness and rolled over to her with Owen right behind them.
"In the morning, you go," Rey said and the droid beeped to them both. "You're welcome. You've got a name?"
The droid beeped again.
"Well, BB-8, I'm Owen, and crabby pants there is Rey," Owen said with a grin until he saw Rey glare at him. "I uh... I'm gonna go meditate now. If I'm not back before you go to sleep, goodnight."
He quickly ran off, mostly from the fear of facing Rey's wrath. The nineteen year old girl simply smiled at her best friend's childlike behavior.
'He can be such a child, but I wouldn't have him any other way,' she thought to herself.
As Owen walked away from the two, he began to think about what had just happened.
A fragment of his old life had just revealed itself to him. He knew that this wasn't a coincidence, that this was a sign. A sign he knew he could not ignore.
"...What do I do, father?," he asked himself and then he looked out into the horizon as the sun set.
After a few moments, he closed his eyes and slowly nodded before speaking again.
"...Yes, Master."
He knelt down and closed his eyes and opened his mind. He felt his feeling reaching out and the sand around him began to rumble. In an instant, he began to thrash as the memories replayed in his head in perfect clarity.
"Father!!!!," a younger Owen yelled in his head. "I'm sorry, Father. I failed you... NO, DON'T DO IT!! AAHHH!!!"
Owen began to become distressed at this, but he didn't break the connection. Then suddenly there came a voice, one he hadn't heard in almost a decade.
"...Owen...," a woman's voice said and his eyes shot open and he began to breathe hard.
"...It can't be," he said to himself and then heard beeping next to him and saw that BB-8 had followed him. "Hey, buddy. It's hard to explain what I was talking about."
The droid beeped in understanding but then beeped again.
"I'll explain that later. I do need you to keep it a secret that you know me for now. Something tells me that things will change tomorrow. Come on, it's dark out now, so let's head back before Rey comes looking for us."
They walked back and BB-8 immediately went into the walker with Owen right behind him. He found Rey sound asleep, which made him smile. He knelt down next to her and gently moved a strand of hair out of her face. He watched for a few moment before quietly standing up and pulled out the wrapped object he had hidden away and again unwrapped it, staring at it yet again. It was not, however, pain and regret on his face when he looked at it, but purpose and determination.
"The time has come," he said to himself quietly and completely unwrapped it.
It was a metal, cylinder-shaped device, almost a foot long and about two inches wide, and it looked as though it emitted something on the top of it.
Then the device suddenly floated in the air as Owen continued to look at it, concentrating.
'Let's see if I remember how to do this,' he though to himself as the device then began to disassemble itself slowly.
BB-8 has been watching the entire time, but kept quiet as Owen began to silently clean each and every single piece. Then he picked up the core, a small, green crystal. He closed his eyes and the pieces all floated and began to reassemble. Once the reassembly was complete, he grabbed the hilt and walked out for a moment and he turned it on. In an instant, a bright, green blade was emitted. He smiled very slightly before turning it off and hiding it on his belt where his cloak would conceal it.
He quickly went back inside to see Rey was still asleep.
'No matter what happens tomorrow, I'll always be there for you, Rey,' he thought to himself.
The next morning went by fast for Rey and Owen. They had gotten their scrap pieces, with the time being much more enjoyable with another person to talk to. Soon enough, they were at Niima Outpost yet again.
"Don't worry," Rey said to BB-8. "Your master might still come back."
"She's right," Owen said as he got the droid off of the speeder and he beeped something to Rey.
"For my family. They'll be back... one day."
Owen gently put his right hand on her shoulder and she smiled at him for a moment before they went back to work.
"Hey, Owen?"
"Yes?," Owen said as they began to clean the scrap pieces.
"You said you have family as well, right?," she asked and he slowly nodded. "You never talk about them."
"Yeah, it's just... it's painful to talk about. Much like with you talking about your parents. I've got my parents, then I have my aunt, uncle and cousin. I also have two other people that I consider to be uncles as well. Main reason I don't talk about them is because..."
"What?"
"...My father and cousin died just before I came here and met you. I couldn't save them."
Rey grabbed his hand, making him look at her.
"I'm sure you did everything you could," she said and he just stayed silent.
They then went over to Unkar Plutt to inspect their pieces.
"What you've brought me today is worth um... let me see... one half portion together," he said and gave them their portion.
"Last week, they were half a portion each," Rey tried to reason.
"What about the droid?"
"...What about him?"
"I'll pay for him," he said and got out a huge pile of portions. "Sixty portions and I'll even add a bonus: forgiveness on the boy trying to steal my ship."
"Alright, to be fair, I just wanted to go inside it as I said before," Owen said, but was ignored as Rey looked at the portions, but then looked back at BB-8 and her best friend, who were waiting for her decision.
"...Actually... the droid is not for sale," she said and took the half portion and they left.
Owen then heard the fat alien talk on the radio about getting the droid.
"Did I do the right thing, Owen? That could've fed us for months and I turned it down."
"...My father once told me that a decision made by instinct should never be doubted, for that means we know that we made the right one. Trust your gut, it's usually right in my experience."
She smiled and continued walking, with BB-8 behind her.
Then Owen stopped for a moment, and Rey turned to look at him. He gestured her to keep moving and she did as he slowly followed. Then right behind Rey came two thugs, who put a net over BB-8 and grabbed her. Instantly, Owen sprinted over and knocked one down and pulled the other off of Rey. During the fighting, Owen did hear someone yelling and turned to see a dark skinned man in a black shirt, pants and shoes, wearing a brown leather jacket looking at them, slightly surprised at how easily they fended off the thugs.
Then the droid saw him and beeped frantically.
"Him?," Rey asked and he beeped in confirmation.
She looked at Owen, who nodded and she immediately began to chase after the man. When he saw this, he began running from her, going through a canopy, only to be tripped by Owen and had Rey's metal staff in his face.
"What's your hurry, thief?," Owen asked as he narrowed his eyes suspiciously at the man.
"What?! Thief?," he said and BB-8 came over and zapped him. "Ow!!"
"The jacket. Thus droid says you stole it," Rey said.
"Look you two, I've had a really messed up day. So I would appreciate it if you would stop accusing me-," he said, only to be shocked again by the droid. "Ow!! Stop it!!"
"Well if you didn't steal it, then where did you get it? It belongs to his master," Owen said and this made the guy pause.
"...It belonged to Poe Dameron. That was his name, right? He was taken... by the First Order. I helped him escape but the ship crashed. ...Poe didn't make it."
The droid then whirred sadly, and deep inside Owen was heartbroken at this loss.
"I tried to help him, I did. I'm sorry..."
The droid simply rolled away a bit and Rey looked at the man as Owen got him up.
"So you're with the Resistance?," she asked.
"Um... obviously. Yeah, I'm with the Resistance. I am with the Resistance," he answered, whispering the last part.
"I never met a Resistance fighter before."
"Well this is what we look like. Some of us, others look different."
"I can imagine," Owen said.
"BB-8 said that he's on a secret mission. He needs to get back to your base."
"Apparently, he has a map that leads to Luke Skywalker and everyone is after it," he said and both Rey and Owen shot their heads at him.
"Luke Skywalker?? I thought he was a myth!!," Rey said.
"It can't be him," Owen said, making them look at him. "Luke Skywalker is dead. Has been for a while."
"I guess not."
Then Finn saw the thugs talking to a couple First Order stormtroopers and then pointed towards them. When he saw this, he grabbed hold of Rey's hand and ran off.
"Come on!! We got to move!!"
"Let go of me!!," Rey said, annoyed at him grabbing her hand. "I know how to run without you holding my hand!! Stay close, BB-8!!"
"Call in the airstrike," one trooper said after they lost them.
The droid was right behind them as they ran off as the troopers began to shoot, causing havoc in the town. Eventually, they were able to find a place to hide and immediately, the guy began looking for blasters.
"They're shooting at all three of us!!"
"They saw you both with me!! You're marked!!," the guy yelled.
"Thanks for that!!"
"Hey, I'm not the one who chased me down with a stick!!"
"The arguing can wait!!," Owen yelled.
"Freeze!! Get down on the ground now!!," another trooper said and Owen immediately walked over to him.
"You never found us here," he said, waving his hand in the air.
"...I never found you here," the trooper said, shocking the others.
"You will report back and say you didn't find us."
"I will report back and say I didn't find you."
The trooper then left and Owen turned to his still shocked companions.
"How did you-?," Rey began to ask but he cut her off.
"Later," he said.
"Wait, listen...," the man said, then they heard the sound of TIE fighters closing in and he took Rey's hand again.
"Stop taking my/her hand!!," Rey and Owen said to him, but they were ignored and they continued running.
Then the fighters started firing at them and shot near them, knowing them to the ground.
Owen was the first to get up and he ran over to Rey.
"You okay?," he asked and she nodded and got up with his help.
They went over to the other man.
"...You okay?," he asked Rey as he got up.
She nodded and helped him as Owen began leading them out of town, and toward the ship he was so fond of.
"Owen, we don't have time check out that ship right now!!!," Rey yelled as they ran.
"We'll never make it to the quad jumper before they blow it up!!"
"Fine, but we need a pilot!!!," the third man yelled.
"We've got two!!!," Owen replied, referring to Rey and himself.
Just as Owen had said, the fighters blew up the jumper, and they moved faster towards the freighter. They quickly get inside, quickly getting to work.
"Gunner position is down there!," Owen pointed to a small compartment that had a ladder that led to the upper and lower turrets.
The man quickly went down to the lower gun as Owen gets into the pilot's seat, but he stops for a moment and smiles.
"This has been a long time coming," he said to himself as he began to turn everything on.
"You've flown this ship before, right?"
"More or less. Although, this ship nor I have flown in years."
"Oh great," he said, then tested out the gun, and realized how easy it was to move it, but it had limited rotational movement. "I can do this... I can do this..."
"I can do this... I can do this," Rey said to herself as
"Rey, I'll need a copilot. BB-8, strap in, this is gonna be a wild ride."
Then the ship shut down out of nowhere, and everyone was about to panic before Owen got up and hit the ceiling, and everything started back up, making Rey look at him suspiciously, but she decided to let it be for now. Soon enough, he got the ship going and with a few moments of stalling and dragging against the ground and wrecking much of the town.
"Hey!!!," Unkar Plutt yelled from the ground as the ship finally took off. "That's mine!!!!"
"Stay low!! Stay low!!," the guy said.
"What the hell for?!," Owen yelled.
"It confuses their tracking, trust me!!"
"...BB-8, hold on," Rey said from the copilot's seat. "We're going low!!"
The ship spun in the air and flew downwards until they were just above the sand and the fighters then just appeared in front of them. They began to fire on them, but the blasts were easily dodged.
"Are you ever gonna fight back?!!"
"I'm working on it!! Are shields up?!," he called back.
"We're working on it!! This isn't exactly easy!!," Owen yelled.
"Try sitting in this thing," the man said to himself.
Soon enough, he began firing at the. As he began to shoot, however, he realized that they were too open.
"We need cover, quick!!"
"We're about to get some!! ...I hope," Rey yelled, muttering the last part to herself.
Then they got closer to the destroyer wreck, twisting and turning hard to avoid them. All the while, BB-8 was being thrown all over until he finally launched three grapnel lines and was now in the air and wasn't being thrown everywhere.
Eventually, they were able to separate the two fighters and the one still chasing them was quickly shot down.
"Nice shot!!," Rey called out.
"I'm getting pretty good at this," he said.
"But don't get cocky!!!," Owen added.
The other fighter that was chasing then got behind them again and fired at the turret, disabling it somewhat.
"Uh, the cannon stuck in forward position. I can't move it. You're gonna have to lose them."
Owen then looked at a nearby destroyer and he turned to Rey, who nodded as she was thinking the same thing.
"Get ready!!," Rey yelled.
"Okay!! For what?," the man asked.
She and Owen then flew the ship towards the destroyer wreck, entering through one of the back thrusters.
"...Are we really doing this?!!"
"Yup!!!," Owen yelled.
Flying through the destroyer was no easy task, as they soon began to run out of room. Thankfully there was a large hole in the side so they turned to the right and went straight up before shutting off the engine, free falling to the ground as they turned in the air and the gunner had a clear shot, and took it. Immediately, Owen turned the engines back on and they then headed upwards and into space, leaving Jakku behind them.
BB-8 then got down from his position as the three ran over to each other. Rey and the other man began to praise each other, with Owen pitching in a bit until BB-8 made his presence known.
"You're okay. He's with the Resistance," Rey said, kneeling down to his level while Owen looked at him suspiciously. "He's gonna get you home. We all will."
"You know, we never introduced ourselves," Owen said as Rey stood up.
"...I'm Finn," the man said.
"I'm Rey."
"My name is Owen," he said, stopping himself.
"Well, Owen... you and Rey are some of the best pilots I've ever seen," Finn said. "Rey said she'd flown other ships, but you... you were incredible. Who taught you how to fly?"
"...My father and uncle taught me."
"One last thing," Rey said. "That thing with the stormtrooper, how did you do that?"
"...Rey, I'm-," he said but then a pipe burst underneath them. "Oh, come on!!! I thought that was fixed years ago."
He lifted the grate out of the way as Rey got a box of tools and they quickly got to work.
First Order Destroyer
Back on a destroyer, a man in black hooded robes and mask, called Kylo Ren, stood alone, waiting for an update on the capture of the BB unit on Jakku.
A First Order officer nervously approached him and began to give his report.
"Sir... we were unable to acquire the droid on Jakku," he said and Kylo Ren turned to look at him, his mask hiding the annoyance on his face. "It escaped capture aboard a stolen Corellian YT model freighter."
"The droid... stole a freighter?," he asked skeptically in a modified voice.
"Not exactly, sir. It had help."
This caused him to turn completely to look at him.
"We have no confirmation, but we believe FN-2187 may have helped in the escape."
Kylo Ren then activated his lightsaber, an crackling red blade appeared with two vents on the side coming out as well, giving it a broadsword like look. He then proceeded to slash and destroy the control console behind him. All the while, the officer just looked frightened at this. Once he was done venting his frustration out on the console, he deactivated the blade.
"...Anything else?," he asked casually.
"...The two were accompanied by two others. A girl-," he said but was cut off by Kylo using the Force to pull him towards his hand and he held him by the neck.
"What girl?!"
"We don't know!! But the other... the young man that was with them, I think he might interest you."
This caused him to let him go.
"Oh... do tell."
Back with Owen and the others, he and Rey continued to work on the ship.
"I thought the motivator was fixed years ago," he said to himself.
"Sounds like you've known this ship a long time now," Finn said.
"That's certainly one way to see it."
"Why didn't you tell me that you've been on this ship before?," Rey asked as Finn handed the wrench to her.
"Didn't think you'd believe me? I'm on a desert planet all alone and a ship I've been on before and know how to fly just happens to be there for me to grab at any time. Doesn't sound believable to me."
"Okay then, but what about that other thing?"
"Later."
"Listen we need to get out of this system," Finn said.
"BB-8 said the Resistance base is need to know, so if we're taking you, we need to know," Rey said.
Then Owen heard Finn saying something to BB-8, but got beeping in response so he decided to help him by translating. But when he poked his head up, he didn't like what he was hearing.
"Between us, I'm not with the Resistance, okay?" Finn whispered and BB-8 looked shocked and Owen glared at him. "I'm just trying to get away from the First Order. But you tell us where the base is, I'll get you there first. Deal?"
"Piles driver, hurry," Rey said, popping up and Finn quickly gets to work while BB-8 realizes he'd heard it all and gestured him to stay quiet. "So, where's your base?"
"Go on, BB-8. Tell them," Finn said and he just looked at him. "Please."
Finally giving in, he beeped and revealed the location.
"The Ileenium system?," Rey said as Owen went back down to work on the motivator.
"Yup, the Ileenium system. Get us there as fast as you can."
He gave a thumbs up to the droid, who lit up a lighter that looked like a thumbs up.
"No problem."
"Wait, Rey, I thought you'd want to go back to Jakku," Owen said.
"Back to Jakku?!! Why does everyone want to go back to Jakku?!," Finn complained.
"This doesn't involve you."
"It's like you said. I can't spend the rest of my life on that barren wasteland. I'm gonna go with you, and we'll find both of our families together."
He smiled placed his right hand on her cheek, making her smile as well.
Then they both got back to work and popped back up.
"Bonding tape, hurry," Rey said and Finn quickly began to look for it before BB-8 and Owen pointed to it.
He quickly grabbed it and tossed it to Rey as Owen got up. He then walked over to Finn and grabbed him by the neck with his right hand.
"Listen here, Finn, if that's even your real name. I overheard the deal you made with BB-8. Now, Rey seems willing to trust you, so I will be as well. But you're gonna have to earn it. If you try to hurt us or worse hurt Rey... I will not hesitate to kill you? Understand?"
Finn quickly nodded and Owen released him.
"Jeez, how are you so strong?!," he said.
Owen smirked at this and began unwrapping his right hand to reveal a cybernetic hand made from scrap parts.
"Oh... wow..."
"Yeah. Lost it just before I arrived on Jakku."
Then red lights came on and they all quickly got to the cockpit to see a large cruiser pulling them in.
"It's the First Order!!," Finn exclaimed, and Owen began to think fast.
"Wait, Rey, the motivator. Let's unfix it and have the poisonous gas take out any troopers that come on board."
She thought for a moment before she nodded and the four of them all went below deck with gas masks.
"How do we know it'll affect them?," Rey asked.
"It will. Their helmets are built to filter out smoke, not toxins," Finn said.
They then heard bangs and Owen places the grate back over them as the door opened. It was then that Owen heard a voice he hadn't heard in almost a decade.
"...Chewie... we're home," a voice said, followed by a Wookiee roar.
Here's the first chapter, hope you all liked it. Not sure when the next chapter will be up, so expect it at any time. Until the next chapter is up, may the Force be with you.
