The New Doctor

Summary: NWZ – A few months after the events in „A Conspiracy of Blood", Doctor Hernandez decided to retire to Monterrey. Diego de la Vega, had volunteered to take over his practice for the following three months, until the new doctor would arrive, using his skills and thirst for knowledge to help people also from this new position and to make some interesting new discoveries. As the new doctor, however, proves to be nothing like what the pueblo had expected and rapidly befriends Diego, a strange love triangle forms involving Diego and the Alcalde, leading to some unpredictable consequences.

Disclaimer: This story is inspired by the NWZ tv series (and, in this case, a certain other TV show popular in the ‚90s). It is dedicated to all the fans out there. It is not intended to infringe on the copyrights held by Goodman/Rosen Production, New World Television, Zorro Productions, the estate of Johnston McCulley or on any others who might have a legal claim on the characters. Clarification: This story, a previous one, called Close Call, and the next two in the series (the minimum I feel necessary to find a satisfying ending), start from the premise that Diego did tell his father that Gilberto Risendo had believed him to be Zorro but his father, despite having just witnessed him fight, was unable to accept such an idea and dismissed it as some other nonsense cooked up by his lost son in his search for vengeance. Diego eventually saw it best not to correct his decision not to believe that he and Zorro were one and the same, agreeing with his father that the notion was absurd.

Don Alejandro was, however, proud of his son's newly demonstrated skill with the sword, which Diego eventually let him believe was just due to his predicament: his own resentment towards Gilberto and the fear for his own life and that of his father. Eventually, Don Alejandro managed to even doubt what he had seen and his memory of his sons' fight dissipated, his thoughts focussing on all the conversations he had ever had with the one son he never knew existed, the hate he felt towards Senora Risendo - who was returned to Spain in chains to face hanging for her crimes - and the idea he had come so close to losing Diego. As a result, Don Alejandro also found a new respect for Diego and stopped treating him like a coward, although focused on making sure to keep him out of trouble and never stopped bothering him about spending too much time reading, instead of looking for a wife. He was also proud of Diego's decision to adopt Felipe who, although a young man by now, nearing his 21st birthday, was, from the old man's perspective, a true De la Vega.

Further clarifications: As the series timeline is quite a bit confuse (one of its rather limited number of flaws) I have decided on my own timeline, starting with Diego's return to Los Angeles in 1812 – as he was born in 1788 and makes no sense to assume he went to university when he was in his late 20s. Finally, I need to mention that these stories are meant to be considered as episodes for the show, rather than short accounts.

Part 1

The coachman had lost control of the horses half a mile down the road after they got scared by a rattlesnake. Doing his best to stop them, he was barely able to prevent himself from falling as Zorro appeared out of nowhere and jumped on one of the stallions, forcing them both to stop.

Senor Zorro! Exclaimed the coachman. Gracias a Dios you were near! These horses had gone mad and there is a canyon up ahead.

Is everyone alright? Zorro asked, dismounting the horse and opening the carriage door.

As he did, a beautiful woman, no older than 29, with curly blond hair and beautiful blue eyes, fell down straight into his arms and looked at him puzzled.

Why are you wearing a mask? She asked just as she fainted.

Surprized, Zorro lifted the woman and put her back in the carriage.

Is there no one else in the carriage? He asked the driver, as he was trying to help her regain her senses.

No, Senor Zorro. Just the lady here. She's an American. Came the answer.

But, the pueblo is expecting the new doctor to arrive today. Said Zorro clearly disappointed.

That's me! The woman answered as she regained consciousness. Why am I back in this carriage? She asked, puzzled by her surroundings. I am never getting on one ever again, in my life! She proceeded to declare.

You...are the new doctor? Asked Zorro. But we were expecting a Senor Jessie Kent.

No, you were expecting Doctor Jessie Kent and that is me. Why you assumed I was a man I have no idea! She answered.

Forgive me, Doctor! I meant no offense. Zorro replied, a courteous smile on his face.

And now that you know who I am, would you mind telling me who you are? Her question came almost as an order.

I am Zorro! Your humble servant, doctor!

Zorro? I heard about you but I thought you might be a tale to scare off bandits. I could have sworn you were a figment of someone's imagination. I still am, since I am pretty sure I bumped my head quite hard sometime during the last 10 minutes. Se asserted, touching her forehead.

I assure you, Doctor Kent, I am quite real. Zorro replied amused

You do look real enough! But, in that case, senor, I have a feeling it will be I your humble servant since, given your life choices, sooner or later you are bound to need my services. She answered quite sure of herself. And, considering that you will soon be in my debt, would you do me the small favor of taking me into town on your horse? I have no intention of getting back on this death trap! She said, as she was pointing at the coach.

It will be my pleasure, doctor! Accepted Zorro. Although, for your safety, I can only take you to the outskirts of the pueblo. My presence makes the soldiers and the esteemed Alcalde rather nervous, and they tend to misfire their guns, you see. He then added, fully aware the soldiers would be in the plaza waiting for the doctor together with the Alcade.

She climbed on the horse, right between his arms, and he brought her to the entrance to the pueblo. Once there, he put her down as if she was made of feathers, but not before the people, gathered in the plaza to receive the new doctor, noticed the scene.

What is Zorro doing here, today, Mendoza? the Alcalde asked. And who is that woman he is carrying?

I don't know, Alcalde! Answered the Sergent. Maybe she is a lady friend of his.

Sergent, make sure you don't lose her from your sight! I must find out who that woman is! Ordered the Alcalde

That was an easy-enough mission for Mendoza as Jessie headed straight for the people gathered in the plaza where she arrived moments after the coach.

The Alcalde opened the door as the musicians started playing.

Welcome, Doctor Kent, to El Pueblo de Los Angeles! He greeted at opening the door and finding the coach empty. What is this? He asked. Driver, where is the doctor?

Meanwhile, Jessie, who was standing right next to him, started laughing, an innocent, joyful laugh.

Senora! Stated the Alcalde at seeing her

I am sorry, senor, but that was too funny not to laugh! She replied

I am Alcalde Ignacio de Soto! Please introduce yourself so that I know who I'll be putting in my jail for mockery! He asked infuriated.

She looked at him for almost half a minute, studying the man before her.

Doctor Jessie Kent. She replied, leaving everyone in awe.

You can't be a doctor! He answered. You...you are a woman!

Fine way to state the obvious, senor! She said. If I can't be a doctor because I am a woman, you can't be Alcalde because you have white hair! It makes just as much sense!

The Alcalde's temper was being tested and a bloodvessel appeared more visible on his neck as others in the audience followed her example and started more-or-less ostentatiously laughing at the scene.

Senora! He tried to make her stop but no other word came out.

Senorita! I am not married! She stated. But you may as well call me Doctor since I assume you expect me to call you Alcalde.

Yes, of course...but I do not understand! De Soto tried to explain. I was informed an American doctor was coming, a man who had studied medicine in Madrid and Harvard, not a... what are you?

Doctor! Do you have trouble hearing, Alcalde? I am Doctor Jessie Kent. I graduated first in my class from the University of Madrid, I have five years of experience in Spain and The United States, and you are not making a first good impression on me so far, senor!

I..I...answered the Alcalde unable to accept such words from a woman yet strangely unable to find his own...I demand to know what were you doing riding with Zorro, Senorita! He decided to ask

Doctor! She defied him. How many times must I say the word? Is there something wrong with his hearing? She asked the Sergent. Perhaps I should take a look! As she said that, she reached for the Alacalde's left ear to everyone's increasing amusement.

Zorro! Why were you with Zorro right now? He almost screamed, taking a step back to get away from her.

Oh, Zorro? She said, stopping her attempt to embarrass the Alcalde. He was kind enough to save us from riding straight into a canyon and than chivalrous enough to bring me here on horseback, since I was not feeling inclined to continue my ride with those mad beasts, closed in a death trap!

But...But...! Said the Alcalde, unsure as to why he found the small delicate woman so intimidating.

Now, could someone be so kind as to escort me to my office? She asked the crowd, completely ignoring De Soto.

Allow me, Doctor! Said Don Alejandro, amused at the events. And may I welcome you to our little Pueblo? I am Don Alejandro de la Vega.

Please to meet you, senor! I am glad to see there are gentlemen in this town. As she said that, she turned to the Alcalde who was practically boiling, an air of superiority on her face.

Yes...Well, doctor, I guess I shall see you later. Said De Soto instead of goodbye as she had already left, heading with Mendoza towards the cuartel as Don Alejandro accompanied Jessie to her office.

ZZZZZZZZ

What is this? Jessie asked Don Alejandro, looking at a sheet of paper with a list of names on it.

The list was carefully placed together with some tools for blood transfusion, a procedure most big hospitals were not practicing yet at the time since it was deemed too dangerous.

I am not really sure, to be honest. Answered Don Alejandro. You will have to ask my son, Diego, when he returns from Santa Barbara, later today. He has taken over the office while the town didn't have a doctor.

Is your son a medicine man? Asked Jessie.

Diego? No...not exactly...But, as he says, "he does know a little something" and, since there was no one else to step in, he volunteered. Answered the don.

So, for the past three months, the only man giving medical advice in this pueblo was a man with no medical education? Asked Jessie rather upset.

Well, he did read a few medical books before volunteering and he has had some experience at mending bullet wounds and broken legs. But, trust me, doctor, Diego will be quite relieved to return to his normal jobs! Answered Don Alejandro.

Normal jobs? May I ask what are his normal jobs? She became intrigued.

Well, Diego is the editor of the town's newspaper, The Guardian, he is an amateur engineer of sorts, he sometimes acts as a lawyer...And, of course, he helps me run the ranch, tend to the animals, that sort of things. That is, when he is not busy composing some sonnet, painting or fiddling with one of his instruments. Came Don Alejandro's answer as he was himself just realizing how many things Diego was actually doing.

Jessie looked at him preoccupied. Such a busy man, she thought, could not have possibly found the time to offer reasonable medical assistance, not to mention, good medical assistance. That, of course, if what the Don was saying was, in fact, true and he was not just purposely exaggerating his son's accomplishments, as most fathers do. Imagining Diego, she decided he was a rather short man, no taller than his father, with glasses, probably quite full of himself if he thought he could perform so many jobs at any reasonable level of adequacy.

ZZZZZZZZ

Later that afternoon, Diego entered the tavern, headed for Victoria, who was sitting behind the bar.

Good afternoon, Diego! Said Victoria at seeing her friend.

Buenas tardes, Victoria! Did I hear right? The new doctor arrived? Asked Diego.

Yes! And guess what? Our new doctor is a woman! She replied.

A woman? Really? Diego tried to fake being shocked by the news.

And what a woman! A very beautiful senorita, Don Diego! Added Mendoza a strange tone in his voice.

Who already managed to annoy the Alcalde! Victoria emphasized.

How did she do that if she just arrived? Wondered Diego.

By putting him in his place! Said Victoria with a smile on her face that made Diego regret that he had not witnessed the scene

I would be very careful not to upset her, Don Diego! said Mendoza. She is not like the women around here!

Really, Sergent? Said Diego. Well, maybe I should go meet this wondrous creature.

Good luck, Don Diego! Said Mendoza seriously, watching Diego exiting the tavern

ZZZZZZZZ

Diego was a little surprised at seeing his father as he entered the doctor's office.

Buenas tardes! He greeted.

Diego! Son, allow me to introduce you to our new doctor, Senorita Jessie Kent. Doctor, this is my son, Diego. Don Alejandro made the introductions

Pleased to meet you, Doctor! Answered Diego, his face not betraying any bit of the surprise she was expecting from the man who had run the office for the previous three months.

Jessie studied Diego from head to toe, just as she had previously studied the Alcalde.

You are a handsome one, aren't you? She couldn't stop herself from voicing out, surprized he looked nothing like she had imagined. Her remark, however, made the two men stare at each other, confused as if that was a rhetorical question or if she was, perhaps, expecting an answer. So, you are responsible for all this equipment, here? She continued, pointing at the medical tools and medicines carefully arranged in the office while ignoring their embarrassed faces.

Not at all, Doctor. Answered Diego, happy she had changed the subject. It was left by our former physician, Doctor Henrandez. I merely added a few pieces to it.

If you'll excuse me, said Don Alejandro, in his head planning his son's wedding to the beautiful new doctor, I will take my leave since I still have some business to attend to.

A good day, senor! Said Jessie, then turned to Deigo. And this list? What is its purpose? She continued her line of questions, expecting it to reflect some sort of payment arrangement.

Well, since we do not lack for people getting shot here, in Los Angeles, and some die because of blood loss, Diego started to explain, I have been doing some research on blood transfusion. I realized different people's blood seem to react differently to some substances. He continued, leaving the woman evermore astonished.

Which could account for some people dying when receiving a blood transfusion? She asked incredulously at realizing the man before her was certainly far from what she had imagined.

Exactly. Diego continued. From what I was able to make out so far, there are 4 types of blood, which I numbered from 1 to 4 according to the way it reacts to the tests. As long as the blood type of a donor matches the one of the receiver, transfusions almost always work. I did have one puzzling case, though. A patient whose body accepted a transfusion the first time ...

But reacted violently the second time, although using the same donor. Jessie finished his sentence

Exactly. Diego found himself repeating the word. He took a small break and continued: Now, I have not yet been able to discover why. I believe there might be something else I am overlooking, something I don't know how to identify.

And this list...? Asked Jessie

The people in the pueblo which I have already tested. I believed it was a good idea to know who can donate to whom in case of an emergency. Diego stated

Jessie looked at him in complete disbelief. "Was the Don actually telling the truth about his son?" She asked herself.

That is, indeed, a very good idea! she answered. May I also ask what this is? She said that taking a type of very thin string

It is a string I developed for internal sutures. The body seems to absorb it after a certain period of time. Answered Diego making her even more intrigued with him.

And you did all this without any medical training? She continued her line of inquiries.

Well, I know a little medicine. And I read a lot. As editor of the local newspaper I do keep myself informed about the new discoveries in all sciences, including medicine. He answered

I see...she said. Well, senor, this conversation has been most enlightening.

Doctor! Should you need me for any reason, my family's hacienda is about two miles from the pueblo and my newspaper office is just next to the tavern. Said Diego. I wish you a pleasant afternoon ...and welcome to the pueblo! He added with a smile, taking his leave

A good afternoon to you too, senor De la Vega! She wished him as he was leaving.

ZZZZZZZZ

The day of her arrival, the Doctor spent in her office, only leaving it later that evening, in order to have some dinner at the Tavern.

What may I offer you, Doctor? Asked Victoria rather coldly. The doctor was beautiful and, no doubt, intelligent and well educated, thus quite a competition for her, she believed, thinking of Zorro.

Just something light. A salad perhaps? Jessie answered

A salad? Asked Victoria. I am afraid we don't serve salad, senorita!

Jessie! You may call me Jessie. And you are?

Victoria Escalante. I am the owner of this tavern.

Well, Victoria, in that case, just bring me whatever you have nice in the kitchen. Jessie replied, with a kind smile on her face

Very well... Jessie! Smiled Victoria a bit forced, not yet decided how to react to the woman's friendliness.

Right as Victoria was turning to prepare the plate, the Alcalde entered and, at seeing Jessie, who just stared at him with a mocking smile on her face, sat himself a few tables away, facing her.

Senorita Escalante! He said. Carne assada, por favor!

Right away, Alcalde! Victoria answered and headed for the kitchen to prepare the meals, leaving the two staring at each other.

Seeing that Jessie was looking straight at him, the Alcalde stared back but soon found himself avoiding her gaze, a reaction which made her smile, satisfied.

Victoria! Jessie asked as the woman brought her food. Would you mind terribly taking a break and sitting with me? I would be grateful for the company.

Victoria hesitated but she was quite aware the young woman knew no one in the pueblo, most men seemed already intimidated by her and there was a part of the tavern owner's heart that pitied the young doctor.

I guess I can take a small break. She accepted. Carmencita, would you mind taking the orders? She asked her helper who was at the bar.

Not at all, senorita! Her helper answered, smiling

So, is it just us or are there more? Asked Jessie

Us? Victoria looked at her puzzled.

You know...the women who don't accept men dictating what they should or not do. You are clearly a businesswoman, which I assume is not often seen in such a small community. And I have a feeling you can put a man to respect. Stated Jessie

Victoria smiled

Now, asked Jessie encouraged by her new friend's smile, can you tell me what I did to upset you?

Upset me? Answered Victoria

I know I have different customs than you, I am straightforward and my behavior may seem offensive to some, but I was forced to adapt to a world dominated by men who thought they were better than me. However, since I do need to befriend at least another young woman in this pueblo, how about we start on the right foot? Jessie clarified her question

Victoria considered what to say. She could certainly see why Mendoza as well as others were already nervous around the Doctor.

Zorro! Stated Victoria. I...I saw him bringing you to town. You should know, he is already spoken for! She said imagining that Jessie, just as most other women in Los Angeles and not only, found her black knight quite irresistible

Zorro? Do you know who he is? The Doctor asked again, not realizing she was upsetting Victoria

No one knows who Zorro is! All we know is that he is the most amazing man in California and one day, when tyranny and injustice will be a thing of the past, he will take off that mask and we will all be able to properly thank him for all that he has done for us. Stated Victoria

So you're in love with him! Decided Jessie. She then added with a smile: Tall, masked and heroic is really not my type, Victoria, you have nothing to worry about! So if that is the only impediment for us becoming best friends, I can assure you I am not interested. However, there is a man I would certainly care to know more about.

What man? Asked Victoria, grateful for Jessie's assurance, although she was unsure if to actually believe it.

Diego de la Vega. Do you know him? Came the answer

Diego? Inquired Victoria confused

Yes. The man seems most fascinating! Confirmed Jessie

You find Diego de la Vega fascinating? Asked Victoria incredulously

I most certainly do! I want to know all about him! Jessie assured her

ZZZZZZZZ

Two days later, at the De la Vega hacienda, Don Alejandro was trying to come up with a plan to encourage Diego to court Jessie Kent.

Diego, I think we should give a party in honor of the new doctor. The idea came to him, as he was watching his son read in the library. I am sure she would welcome the opportunity to meet some of our friends, don't you think so, Diego?

That is an excellent idea, father. Replied Diego, raising his gaze and making the Don smile, convinced he had just read his son's mind, although Diego was not at all thinking about the new doctor, his mind being otherwise engaged.

It is set, then. Tomorrow evening we'll throw her a party! Perhaps you could go visit her later today to tell her about it? I think you two could really get along, son! Don Alejandro stated satisfied

Father...Diego prepared to lower his father's expectations regarding a possible relationship with Senorita Kent when the doorbell rang.

Are you expecting someone? Asked Don Alejandro

No, not really! Answered Diego as he was heading to answer the door. Doctor Kent! What a surprise! Please, come in!

Thank you, Don Diego. You have a very beautiful house if I may say so! She replied looking around. Don Alejandro! She greeted the old man.

Doctor! He exclaimed. What a coincidence! I was just telling Diego that he should pay you a visit. I would like to throw you a welcome party, here at the hacienda, and we were wondering if tomorrow evening would, perhaps, be convenient for you?

A party? She asked

My father believes it would be a good opportunity to meet some of our friends. Said Diego

That is very kind of you, Senores, and I do love parties. I am, however, here, for a different matter. Don Diego, may I talk to you alone? Requested Jessie, lowering a little her voice

Oh...I will take my leave in that case. Doctor! Said Don Alejandro, eager to give the two a little time alone.

How may I be of service? Asked Diego as he was watching with the corner of his eye his father disappearing around a corner.

Don Diego, I must confess the first time I heard your father mention that you have been acting as the pueblo's doctor the past few months, I came to the wrong conclusion. She dived right in. You see, I have seen men with no medical experience treating patients and, usually, ending up killing them or harming them beyond repair. But, from what I managed to find out so far, you are quite the opposite of those phonies.

Well, I did try my best...Replied Diego, pleasantly surprised at her unexpected honesty

I believe you have a gift for medicine and I...I could use a colleague. She explained, touching upon the reason for her visit. So I am here to offer you a deal: you help me and continue your work in the office and I teach you everything I know.

I admit, Doctor, that I do find medicine quite fascinating and I always welcome the chance to learn more. Said Diego, at hearing her proposition. However, you should know I have my whims and my passions, I help my father run this ranch, edit the newspaper..."be Zorro" his mind added but not out loud, so the time I am able to spare is rather limited.

Yes, your father did mention yesterday a rather long list of activities you are engaged in. Noted Jessie with some disappointment but resolute in her decision. However much you can spare, Don Diego, I will take it. She decided smiling.

I believe we have an agreement in that case, doctor! Confirmed Diego, to her delight. Now, since you are here and it is a rather hot day, may we offer you some refreshment? He asked and she approved nodding her head.

ZZZZZZZZ

Three weeks passed since the arrival of the new doctor, three weeks in which Jessie Kent had been the main topic of conversation in the pueblo. The Alcalde was just as annoyed and, in the same time, intimidated by the young woman, Victoria was still unsure how to feel about her, especially since she did not particularly appreciate the attention Diego was paying her, and Diego himself was happy to have finally found someone in the pueblo who appreciated knowledge as much as he did and with whom he could have endless, but fascinating discussions about many of the subjects he was interested in.

Is it just me or those two are really getting along, Victoria? Asked Don Alejandro at entering the tavern and seeing his son, sitting at a table, caught up in a conversation with Jessie.

Victoria looked at Don Alejandro

What can they have to talk about so much? She asked. Every time they have lunch here together they stop paying attention to anyone else!

Well, Victoria, they are both young...they may be trying to know each other a little better. I for one am quite happy to see him finally interested in a woman! You know, he has actually spent more time learning medicine since he's been helping the doctor than he has painting recently? Added the old don, making Victoria wonder why he thought Diego acting differently was a good thing.

I really don't see what he sees in her! Said Victoria unable to restrain a sudden burst of jealousy.

She is quite smart, Senorita, or so everybody says! Intervened Mendoza, approaching the bar with the Alcalde. I think Don Diego has finally found someone in this pueblo who can challenge him at an intellectual level!

Intellectual! Ha! The Alcalde cut in. What would a ...medicine woman... and a failed poet have to challenge each other about? He commented at seeing the two and becoming suddenly quite upset. Come, Sergent, we have work to do!

But, Alcalde, we just came in for lunch! Said Mendoza

I have just lost my appetite, Sergent. Let's go! Ordered the Alcalde

But...Alcalde...my appetite is quite intact! Protested Mendoza at following him out

I think he really dislikes the new doctor! Remarked Don Alejandro amused as the Alcalde left the tavern

As De Soto returned, annoyed, to the plaza he stumbled on a rock and fell, breaking his leg. His screams of pain made everyone exit the tavern as Diego and Jessie kneeled next to him to examine the leg.

How in the world did you manage to break your leg on the plain ground? Asked Jessie laughing

This is no laughing matter, Senorita! I am in serious pain! Said the Alcalde

We should take him to the office. Suggested Diego. Could you have some lancers transport him there, Sergent? He added, facking he was not strong enough to carry him.

As they arrived, Jessie put on a white apron and started bossing Diego around as she usually did in the office.

Cut his pants off, Diego! Jessie asked

Cut my pants off? Why? Protested the Alcalde as Diego submitted somehow amused. For some reason, the petite lady in front of him had been causing more embarrassment to De Soto in a few weeks than Zorro managed in years.

I can't treat the leg through the pants, can I? She answered. Hurry, Diego!

Diego cut off the pants on the Alcalde's left leg then, at Jessie's signal, he gave him some ether to sniff and De Soto fell asleep on the table.

Jessie put back his bones, sutured the wound and bandaged the leg with two long splints, as Diego assisted her. When all was done, she asked the Sergent to bring a nightshirt for the Alcalde and proceeded to cut off the pants from his other leg. The Alcalde woke up a few hours later in a bed she had installed in her rather small living quarters, separated by her own bed with nothing more than a drape.

Where am I? He asked.

In my chambers. Replied Jessie. Since I hardly think your men are capable of taking care of you, I shall do that myself.

Take care of me? Wh...What do you mean? Inquired the Alcalde

Obviously, a broken leg requires some taking care of. You won't be able to move for a month or it might break again. Or the bones can move and you would end up with a very strangely shaped leg, Alcalde, or worse. So I will make sure you have everything you need right here! She answered

Senorita, this is highly inappropriate! A single woman...my needs...He tried to protest

How many times do I have to tell you I am a doctor? She asked. Now, is there anything you need? Food? Water? Do you need to go to the bathroom?

I can find my own way to the latrine, Doctor, no need for your assistance! Said De Soto

You, senor Alcalde, will not move from that bed! If you need it, I will bring you a chamberpot and I will help you use it! She informed him

Help...Help me use it? Senorita! He protested ever more amazed at the woman's ideas.

Alcalde! I am a Doctor before being a senorita. I assure you, there is no part of the male anatomy I have not seen and studied in great detail, thus I very much doubt that you have anything special to show me! Said Jessie, ending the discussion by leaving De Soto livid.

The next day, Sergent Mendoza was sent to the Hacienda De la Vega with an urgent message from the Alcalde for Diego to visit him.

Good afternoon, Ignacio! Greeted Diego at entering the room. The Sergent said you asked for me?

Diego! Diego, thank God you are here! Responded the alcalde. Only you can save me from this dreadful woman! Please, you must convince her to let me return to the garrison! I tried to speak to Mendoza about it but he is more afraid of her than he is of me!

Well, Ignacio, smiled Diego, I regret to say that I cannot be of much help, either! But, do not worry, Alcalde! You are in good hands! Doctor Kent is a trained physician and she will make sure you will be on your feet in no time!

But, Diego, De Soto made a last try, she is a woman! An unmarried, dreadful woman who won't listen to reason! It is certainly not decent to...

I am so sorry, Alcalde, but I have to agree with her on this! Keeping you here is most certainly the best we can do for you! Answered Diego laughing on the inside at the man's visible anguish.

De Soto looked at him and thought to himself that Diego, being such a weakwilled, is probably just as intimidated by Jessie as the Sergent and the other men in town.

Thank you for nothing, Diego! He said as he sank into the bed and turned his head away, inviting his former colleague to leave.

A few days later, the Alcalde and Jessie were sharing a dinner she brought from Victoria. Jessie was not much of a cook so the tavern was her only source of nourishment.

So...Alcalde...do you play cards? Asked Jessie all of a sudden.

Cards? Repeated the Alcalde.

Yes. I feel rather bored today and it is only 7. Let's play some cards, will you? She replied

A lady playing cards? He asked again.

All my colleagues in University were playing, so I had to learn. It was hard enough to be accepted as a woman, so beating them at cards helped...She explained.

I can assure you no woman can beat me, senorita! The Alcalde answered her challenge, sure this was his opportunity to put her in her place.

Why don't we test that statement, than? Here!

As she said that, she took out a deck of cards that she mixed with the rapidity and skill of a professional player, impressing De Soto who soon realized he stood no chance against her. He was mad at first, because he was being bested by a woman. By that woman. Then, he slowly started to admire her skill and soon ended up admiring her.

Another evening, after the Alcalde lost all of the ten card games they played together, she asked him:

Why did you become Alcalde, Ignacio de Soto?

What? Why? Well, I am a military man. It was an obvious step in my career. Besides, this pueblo needed me! He assured her

But you are no good at it! You make up laws that only serve your interests, you arrest innocents instead of guilty men and, from what I hear, the only time you ever got a commendation for your work here was because of something Zorro, not you, did. She continued questioning him

Senorita! He tried to defend himself. You may have seen me at my most vulnerable but I don't permit you to judge my actions!

I am not. All I wanted to point out is that, since you are not exactly made for the job, perhaps you would be happier doing something else! She concluded

I can assure you I am very happy with my position. And when I catch...

Zorro...yes, I know all about your obsession with the man. I don't understand it, though! Tell me, why is it that you want him so badly? She asked

Why? Because the man is a public menace! He has attacked my men more times than I can count, he can incite riots, he meddles with army equipment, he contradicts my orders, he breaks into my seif and steals the money...the man knows no limits! He replied, annoyance in his voice

But he also saves your men's lives – and yours from what I heard - , rescues innocents you try to have executed, never keeps any money he takes from you, returns the money stolen by bandits, catches criminals and brings them to justice. Frankly, Alcalde, the man seems to be much better at your job than you are! She remarked, determined to torture him a little longer

Was De la Vega who told you all this nonsense? I always knew his family must be in league with him and I assure you that you are seriously misinformed! Said the Alcalde

Diego? No, not at all. Replied Jessie. Actually, come to think about it, I don't believe I ever talked about Zorro with Diego, which is rather strange since it is the only subject anyone else in this Pueblo wants to discuss...

Well, in that case, may I say my esteem for De la Vega has just increased. Answered the Alcalde. Zorro! He puffed. I, for one, cannot understand the people's fascination with a bandit!

He is no ordinary bandit, Alcalde. Even you know that! She answered. Tell me, is it true he rescued you from being executed by a Spanish Emissary?

Well, yes...but I would have hardly needed any rescue had Zorro not put my leadership of this pueblo in a precarious position with his chaotic behavior! He replied

You seem very sure of that. Have you ever considered you might be wrong? She asked

Wrong? About what, senorita? He asked

About you. And about Zorro. She replied

Hmmm. Of course not! He protested

Perhaps you should! Good night, Ignacio!

Yes...Good night, Doctor!

ZZZZZZZZ

A couple of months later, Ignacio was on his feet, his leg mended, his eyes following Jessie around from his window as often as possible.

De la Vega! He mumbled. What can she possibly see in him? The man is as exciting as a lettuce.

ZZZZZZZZ

One afternoon, as bandits attacked the bank and Zorro was not there for the rescue, Jessie saw that Ignacio was about to get shot and jumped on him, ending up shot instead. She lost consciousness right away, as the bandits rode out of the pueblo, lancers following them.

Get Diego de la Vega! Now! Shouted De Soto at Mendoza who climbed on his horse and headed at full speed towards the De la Vega Hacienda.

Diego came in to find Jessie in critical condition.

She needs blood! He told Ignacio after examining her wound, then checked his list of names. Would you care to donate, Ignacio? He asked, finding the Alcalde had the same blood type as Jessie.

No, De Soto did not answer Diego's appeal to have his blood tested but Jessie did it anyway when he was lying unconscious on her operating table with a broken leg.

Give her my blood, Diego? But...she is a woman. Surely a man can't give blood to a woman?! Replied De Soto making Diego ponder on the absurdity of the Alcalde's ideas.

Blood is blood Ignacio. It has no gender. He asked

Ignacio agreed to give her blood and Diego asked him to lay next to the doctor in order to make the transfusion while working to get the bullet out and close the wound. Ignacio looked at him with a certain degree of fascination as he was performing his tasks - focused, clear-minded and determined - for the first time appreciating Diego.

Is she going to make it? De Soto asked as Diego was bandaging the wound

It is too early to say, Alcalde. He answered as he took out the needles. The bullet is out but I am not sure how much damage it might have caused. Sergent! Have the lancers found the men who shot her? He asked with a strange determination, just as Mendoza came through the door.

No, Don Diego. The men have just returned. They lost their tracks at the Canion Perdido. Answered the Sergent

Incompetents! Oh, just wait till I get my hands on those bandits! Exclaimed De Soto, prompting Diego to wonder at his sudden burst. Form another search party, Sergent! I want those men in my jail and I will not accept failure!

A few more hours passed and Jessie was still sleeping peacefully, Ignacio de Soto by her side, refusing to move from the chair he was in.

Well, Diego said, for now, there's not much more I can do. She must rest and, frankly, so do I. Ignacio, would you mind keeping watch on her till morning? I will be back at dawn.

Shouldn't you be here? I would not know what to do if her condition worsens. Said the Alcalde

I am afraid there's not much I would be able to do either. Replied Diego. However, if there's any change, send a man to the hacienda and I will be here as soon as I can.

Ignacio made a sign with his head, upset at Diego's decision to leave Jessie alone, yet somehow relieved he was going.

ZZZZZZZZ

That night, Zorro went after the bandits. He found them sharing the money and making fun of the stupid lancers who were unable to find them.

Senores, do you perhaps believe you can hide from justice as easily as you hide from the lancers? Asked Zorro.

Zorro! They exclaimed

Surprized, the four men hardly had any time to realize what was happening when Zorro launched on them with the rage of a mad bull, hitting them and knocking them unconscious.

A good woman is near death because of your greed! Yet I do not know, senores, whether to pity her or you, for what the Alcalde will do once he'll have you at his mercy! And you can be sure I do not intend to stop him! Zorro threatened the men.

As he said that, he tied them up, took the money and delivered them to the lancers which, in the Alacalde's absence, didn't even try to shoot or to follow him.

Thank you, Zorro! Said Mendoza. The Alcalde will be very pleased to have them in jail.

As they took the prisoners, Zorro left the pueblo but soon doubled-back and entered the doctor's office through the roof, surprising Ignacio praying next to Jessie. The scene seemed quite emotional to him, so he allowed the Alcalde to finish before entering the room.

How is she doing, Alcalde? He asked, convinced De Soto will not pick a fight with him this time.

Ignacio turned and saw him but, as Zorro predicted, made no move to attack his mortal enemy.

She is breathing. That's all that matters. He answered. Did you bring the bandits? He than asked

Yes. Mendoza just escorted them to the jail.

Good. Good. Thank you for your assistance, Zorro. Ignacio answered and refocused on Jessie.

Good night, Alcalde! Said Zorro smiling as he left through the front door, whistling for Tornado

ZZZZZZZZ

Diego came the next morning to find the Alcalde asleep on a chair next to Jessie. The same image he encountered the next few days, as Ignacio de Soto refused to leave her side.

Jessie woke up the fourth morning, seeing Ignacio asleep in the chair next to her bed. She looked at him smiling and, as he started to wake up, she pretended she was still asleep.

Any change? Asked Diego as he entered the room

No, not yet. Replied De Soto. Can't you do anything, Diego?

All we can do is wait. He replied. The worst has passed, Ignacio. The wound is healing fine, there is no sign of internal bleeding or infection. If she managed to survive this long, I believe she has very good chances to recover soon. Why don't you go eat something? You need your strenght, Alcalde. He added with a genuinly kind tone. I will stay and look after her.

I can hardly think of food when she is lying here between life and death. He said, trying but failing not to sound rather miserable.

Diego smiled at the scene."So he is able to care for someone other than him" he thought.

Go eat something Alcalde! There's not much you can do for her. I will let you know if there is any change. You are still Alcalde, you know? He added

Alright. I will be back in half an hour.De Soto eventually agreed, irritated at Diego deciding to remind him of his official duties.

As he closed the door, Jessie took Diego's hand and stared at him.

How long has he done that, Diego? She asked

Jessie! How are you feeling? Diego asked, ignoring her question

I am good. Answer the question! She demanded

Ignacio has been by your side most of the time since you got shot. Answered Diego with a smile

He then continued to inform her about what had happened after she was shot, how De Soto donated her his blood, how mad he was with the men who shot her, how he had all his lancers dispatched with orders to bring them to justice.

Let's not tell him anything just yet. For all you know, I am still in a coma. She asked Diego when he finished.

I am sure it would make him very happy to find out you recovered! Why would you fake being in a coma? Diego wondered

Because I want to see his face when I die on him and miraculously return to life. She answered seriously

Diego looked at her trying to understand what was going on in her mind.

Take it as an experiment, Diego! You like experiments. Let's test if De Soto actually has a heart! She challenged

Diego smiled. He somehow pitied De Soto but he understood quite well the purpose of her decision.

Alright. He agreed. I won't tell him yet. When he returns I will make up some excuse and go to the tavern. You have half an hour and he'd better know you are fine when I return!

I believe we have a deal, my friend! She answered with a smile.

De Soto finished his breakfast in 20 minutes, finding the food tasteless, when by his office where Mendoza informed him about some nonsense he never even try to pay attention to and hurried up to return by Jessie's side.

Oh, Ignacio, you are back. Said Diego. Perfect! I need to go gather some herbs for a plant extract that might be of help. I will not be gone long.

Yes...I...I guess I can stay with her a little longer. The Alcalde answered, trying to conceal his delight at the fact that Diego was leaving.

About twenty minutes later, Jessie pretended to stop breathing and let her limbs fall idle by her side. Ignacio panicked, tried to call Diego, remembering he was away, then tried to check if she was breathing using a mirror.

No, no, no! Please, breathe! I ...I don't know what to do! That idiot said you would be alright! I should have known he had no idea what he was doing! You can't die on me now! Please, God, I know I don't talk to you too often but, please, let her live! He muttered devastated

As he said that, Jessie took in a breath of air and opened her eyes staring right at him. He became even more livid than he already was.

Are you alive? He asked

Yes! I seem to be. She answered as if nothing had happened. How long have I been here?

Well, about four days I believe. Answered Ignacio

Four days? And you are not sure? Shouldn't you know that for certain? She asked

Well, I ... I am rather tired...He tried to excuse himself

Yes, your Alcalde duties must weight down on you. Tell me, did you and your men captured those bandits or did Zorro have to come to the rescue? She continued asking

All that matters is that they are in jail and you are...

Alive? Thanks to Diego, I assume, since no one else in this pueblo seems qualified to operate on a person! She answered in a clear attempt to annoy him.

Yes, yes. Diego did manage to take the bullet out and close the wound. I, myself, donated you some of my ...

Gracias a Dios for Diego! The man is a Godsent! She interrupted

Right. Thank God for Diego...

Can you call him? I am sure he must be very worried about me! She asked, looking for the Alcalde's reaction

Yes, he...actually went for some ...

I am back! said Diego at entering the door. Jessie! He exclaimed making her realize how good an actor he could be. How are you feeling?

Quite well, Diego! You must have done a really good job since I hardly feel any pain. Do you have the bullet? Will it leave a scar? She bombarded him with questions she did not really care for him to answer.

Well...

Alcalde, why don't you let Diego sit next to me? We have much to discuss! She ordered him

Yes, of course. Diego... Said Ignacio rather upset at being exiled. I will be in my office should you need me. He added

We won't. Said Jessie

Why are you treating him like this? Asked Diego after Ignacio left

He needs this, trust me! Was her reply. From the day I walked into this pueblo I decided to make a new man out of him! He is quite a challenge, though. But he can be better! He might even have a good heart hidden in there somewhere. She concluded with a loving smile, similar to the one Zoror had many times seen on Victoria's face

You do realize you almost died, don't you? Asked Diego. Whatever possessed you to jump in front of that bullet?

I know, Diego! But I cannot repair a man if he is dead, can I? Plus, I am an optimist. I see the opportunity that the bullet gave me.

But, why De Soto? He insisted, unable to fully understand his friend

I don't know. There's something about him. It is like asking Zorro why Victoria. I don't know why. I just know it's right. Or, better said, I know he needs me! Was the only answer she could give him and Diego smiled, hoping that, indeed, Jessie might make Ignacio into the man he had wished him to be when he first came to Los Angeles.

In truth, since the day Ignacio had saved his life, Diego found it harder and harder to mock the Alcalde as Zorro and lost the appetite for it. He wished that Ignacio might change, but, whatever change there was, his worst side had still found a way to manifest from time to time, prompting him to intervene.

ZZZZZZZZ

A few days after Jessie Kent resumed her work as a doctor, the Alcalde and the Sergent were about to enter the Tavern for lunch when the Alcalde's sight was captured by Diego and Jessie, strolling across the plaza, her right arm resting on his left.

Look at them, Sergent! Said De Soto. Do you see how she's holding onto him like glued to his hand? I! I was the one who stood by her side all that time and he gets all the credit! And why? What does he have that I don't?

Well, Alcalde, Don Diego is very wealthy, he is younger than you, tall, handsome, he is very intelligent and he did save her life! Replied Mendoza

I didn't ask for a list, Sergent! De Soto said as he entered the tavern.

You seem to be in a bad mood today, Alcalde! Said Victoria as he sat at a table

Women! Why do you assume you know anything about what a man feels? He replied

I think the Alcalde is a little bit upset with all the attention the Doctor is giving Don Diego these days. Said Mendoza

Oh, Sergent! What's the use. You've seen them! They will probably announce their engagement by the end of the week! Said the Alcalde

Jessie and Diego? Asked Victoria. Diego cannot possibly want to marry Jessie, can he?

Why not? They make a nice couple. Said the Sergent looking at them through the drapes. They always have a lot to talk about, they are both intelligent, good looking...They will make beautiful children, don't you think so, Senorita Victoria?

Victoria became quite upset, gave the Sergent a spiteful look and left the table, headed for the kitchen.

A few minuts later, the Alcalde and the Sergent saw Jessie and Diego embracing each other, the scene prompting the De Soto to leave his eyes down in resignation. Diego headed for the church while Jessie entered the tavern.

Sergent! Why don't you go eat at another table? She said as she sat in front of De Soto

Si, Doctor. Right away. He obeyed

What do you want? Asked the Alcalde.

I may well ask you the same question, Ignacio! She answered.

Ha? Was his only reply

So, do you want to marry me or not? She asked just as Victoria was coming out of the kitchen.

Marry...you? he tried to confirm he was hearing right

Well, if you are not decided, maybe Diego is, so I should perhaps return to him...She concluded and was about to stand up

I? I thought you and Diego...He tried to say „would marry" but she stopped him

Diego is a bit too good for my taste. I would hardly change a strain of hair on his perfect head! You, on the other hand, you, my dear, I will mold you like clay and you will love me for it! She said, a twisted smile lightening her face

Mold me!? A De Soto? You are mad, woman! He reacted

Well, if that is all you have to say to me...She rose to leave

Marry me! Please, oh God, will you stop torturing me and marry me already? He almost yelled at her.

She smiled

Marry you...Yes! Stop torturing you? Not a chance! It is too much fun! She added, the strange smile returning to her face. We will marry Saturday at 5 PM. I already asked Diego to arrange it with Padre Benitaes. Look pretty and don't be late! She said as she left the table without so much as hug him.

What just happened? Asked the Alcalde as Mendoza came to congratulate him

I believe those beautiful children I was talking about earlier will be yours, Alcalde! He answered

Diego entered the tavern a little later, as De Soto was still under shock.

I take it congratulations are in order, Alcalde! He said

Yes, thank you, Diego! Thank you. Ah...Diego...would you care to be my best man? He asked

Your best man? Diego repeated surprized. Shouldn't you better ask the Sergent?

Do you think he is alright? Diego proceeded to ask Victoria.

I don't know. She answered confused

No...not the Sergent. I would rather it was you, De la Vega. Ignacio said

I...I would be honored, Alcalde! Accepted Diego after pondering the irony of the situation

Ignacio. You should just call me Ignacio...

ZZZZZZZZ

Don Alejandro was understandably upset by the news of the Alcalde's wedding to the Doctor. He had so wished she had chosen Diego! A woman like that, he thought, would be able to bring Diego down from his clouds. He was also convinced that his son had tried to court her, although he had, clearly, failed miserably, and was pitying Diego for having to now be the best man at the wedding.

Come on, Diego, courage! Said Don Alejandro. You are the best man! You cannot be late!

Did you prepare the gift? Asked Diego ignoring his father attempt.

Yes, here it is. Replied Don Alejandro. Although, I don't understand son, why make such a gift to De Soto? The man has been nothing but trouble since he came here.

He also saved my life, father, may I remind you. Plus, I am not doing it for De Soto but for Jessie. He answered

It is a shame, Diego! How could you let such a woman escape through your fingers? And for De Soto, no less, son? Complained Don Alejandro

Well, father, the heart wants what the heart wants and she does seem to be quite a good influence on our Alcalde. Answered Diego, decided to let his father believe whatever he wanted, in the hope he might stop nagging him to get married, at least for a while.

Yes, that might be true...His father approved. You know the Sergent just told me that De Soto asked the lancers yesterday not to fire on Zorro? Love does make a man do all sorts of unexpected things. I just hope you might one day feel that way, Diego!

The reception took place at the tavern and when it was over and the people were beginning to take their leave, Diego, Don Alejandro and Felipe approached the Bride and Groom and offered them a paper as a wedding present.

It's from all of us, although my father is the main contributor. Said Diego

Well, thank you, Diego! What is it? Asked Jessie as the Alcalde opened the paper

It is the deed to the De la Vega Eastern Vineyards. He answered surprised

It was Diego's idea. Said Don Alejandro.

There is a small house on the property but, as a personal contribution to the gift, I would be happy to help with transforming it into a real hacienda. Added Diego

You are giving us part of your best lands? Asked De Soto.

Thank you, Diego! Answered Jessie Thank you so much, Don Alejandro, Felipe!

You're welcome, Doctor. Answered Don Alejandro, still trying to understand his son's reasons for the gift.

They left the table as Ignacio was still baffled watching the deed.

I almost had him executed. He mumbled

Executed? Whom? Asked Jessie

Don Alejandro. I tried to have him executed for being Zorro. Why would he give us such a present?

Because he is a good man? Asked Jessie

Ignacio didn't answer, just continued staring at the paper before him.

Part 2

A warm morning of September 1821, at the De Soto hacienda, found the two newlyweds arguing.

You can't possibly be serious, Ignacio! Yelled Jessie. This is where our lives are! I have no interest in leaving this place!

But dear, you can't seriously want us to spend the rest of our lives in Los Angeles! He replied

Ignacio de Soto! Listen to me and listen well! This is where we belong. So you will quit the army, you will quit the office, and you will become a haciendado! It is either that or going back to Spain without me! She threatened

You must be reasonable, dear! I have dedicated my life to the army. I am the Alcalde of Los Angeles, the most powerful man in the territory. I have men at my command. You can't seriously want me to give it all up in order to raise cattle and make wine! He begged

That is exactly what I want, Ignacio! And sure enough, it is exactly what you're going to do! And this conversation ends here. I have to go to my office! Said Jessie, slamming the door as she left

That infernal woman will be the death of me! Exclaimed De Soto mostly for himself

ZZZZZZZZ

Diego! Said Jessie at entering her office and finding her partner examining a child with a dislocated shoulder.

Jessie, so good you got here! He exclaimed. You are much better at this than I am. Can you take a look?

Yes, let's see!

As she said that, she put the arm in position making the child scream a little and then stop, realizing the pain was almost gone. She continued in putting a belt around the arm and neck so that the child would have to keep the arm elevated.

Make sure he keeps it for at least 5 days! She said to the boy's mother. You don't have to pay anything, senora! She added, as the woman was taking out her purse. Have a nice day! Now, she said, turning towards Diego as the grateful woman exited the office, I really need to talk to you!

Is there anything the matter? He asked.

Ignacio! He wants us to move to Spain. He says orders are coming for all Spanish military to withdraw from California.

Then the rumors are true. California is to be ceded to Mexico. Said Diego

I don't want us to go to Spain, Diego! Please, there must be something to be done! She begged

Well, Ignacio can quit the military. The vineyard should be able to support you financially since you stubbornly refuse to take money for most of your services. He suggested

I cannot ask those poor people for money, Diego! Plus, I have enough money! My parents left me rich! Not that I would ever tell Ignacio that! The problem is he doesn't want to quit his position.

I see. He will have to, nevertheless. He can't both go to Spain and remain alcalde of Los Angeles. He concluded

Yes, but why is he so afraid to stay and let someone else be alcalde? She asked. Zorro perhaps! He would make a much better Alcalde than Ignacio!

Diego smiled and left his eyes down. He already had enough jobs! Plus, he enjoyed being Zorro, the thrills and even the dangers that came with his alter-ego's life!

Because he knows how he used the office? Diego eventually answered ironically to her question.

You think he is afraid the next alcalde might use his power against him? She asked

There is always that possibility. Diego admitted

Can't it be prevented somehow? She insisted

I don't know, to be absolutely fair. We would need a lawyer's advice on that matter. He replied

I thought you were one! What was that list? Editor, doctor, musician, painter, poet and lawyer, I believe? She said

I am afraid I am no more a lawyer than I am a doctor. He replied.

You, my friend, are one of the best doctors I have ever seen, so you must be a very good lawyer. She assured him

Jessie, I can take a look at the legislation tomorrow. But I cannot promise you anything, especially since these are very troublesome times. The birth of a new state is never an easy process...Diego tried to avoid raising her hopes. After all, if there was something he knew about the Alclade, was that he was a stubborn man.

ZZZZZZZZ

As Ignacio de Soto entered his office the next morning, he found two books on the desk. One was a volume of Spanish law and the other a volume of Mexico's new legislation. The two books were opened and certain paragraphs were signaled with a Z.

"Zorro! In my office, again! Mendoza already obeys his orders rather than mine. That renegade has taken over this entire pueblo! What's the point in being alcalde if no one obeys me?"De Soto asked himself, sitting on his chair and starting to read the marked paragraphs, then re-read them. When he finished, he pondered on them for most of the morning, then he asked Mendoza in his office and ordered a podium to be built in the plaza till the next day.

That woman! He said watching his wife exiting the cabinet. Why does she always have to win? Even Zorro is clearly on her side!

The podium was ready by midday, the day after the Alcalde found the books on his desk. He had barely slept the previous night, considering how his decision was going to probably destroy his life and his career, imagining Mendoza and Zorro laughing at him, Diego and Don Alejandro looking at him with superiority and refusing to even talk to him and his wife leaving him for the next alcalde. Then, in the morning, Jessie came to the room bringing him breakfast and, somehow, his decision suddenly seemed right.

ZZZZZZZZ

Citizens of Los Angeles! Started the Alcaldeas he got on the podium. I gathered you here because I have an important announcement to make and this concerns us all! As many of you must already know, Mexico has declared its independence from Spain and California is to become a Mexican territory. This change in status comes accompanied by important legal changes. One of those changes refers to the election of alcaldes. As you may know, I was named Alcalde of Los Angeles by royal decree. Such nomination no longer applies under Mexican rule.

For this reason, I have decided to step down from the office and organize free and fair elections. Since both Spanish and Mexican rules allow the ongoing alcalde to nominate his successor, I hereby appoint three leaders of this community out of which the people of Los Angeles will be asked to chose one to become your new alcalde.

After much consideration, I decided that the three nominees should be three of the most respected, well-educated and able people in this pueblo. I, thus, nominate Don Sebastian Santana, Don Alejandro de la Vega and Don Matias Morales. As direct nominees any one of them you elect has the duty to take office and serve as alcalde for the next three years. The elections will take place tomorrow and the new alcalde will take office the day after.

With that said, Ignacio looked defiantly at his wife who's big, happy smile contaminated him.

The crowd cheered a few times during the speech and Don Alejandro, as well as his two best friends, Don Sebastian and Don Matias, seemed surprised by it and by their nomination. The only one who was not surprised was Diego.

I have to say I am a bit worried, Diego, said Don Alejandro after a brief discussion with some of the other dons if I win these elections you will have to take care of the ranch almost all by yourself, son. What do you think prompted De Soto to nominate me? And my two closest friends?

Well, father, maybe he genuinely wants Los Angeles to finally have a good ruler. After all, if he does decide to remain, it is also in his own advantage for the next Alcalde to be a better man than he is. Diego replied with an almost imperceivable smile.

Yes, you are right, Diego. He has the vineyards. He doesn't need to be alcalde. All he needs is low taxes! Don Alejandro agreed

Diego looked at his father approving that train of thoughts.

The next day, Don Alejandro de la Vega was elected to be the new alcalde of Los Angeles, leaving the people contented with the idea they finally had an alcalde who would not oppress them. As for Don Alejandro, while he could not take the price off Zorro's head, since the matter was already in the hands of the governor, he did, nevertheless, asked the lancers to cooperate with Zorro and never to try and shoot at him or harm him in any way.
