AN: I always felt after finishing the series, especially when I found out there won't be a season 4, that there should've been a scene before the big 3x10 kiss where Anne explains the missing note to Gilbert. Or something like that. I just felt unsatisfied. So I wrote this! Please be kind, this is my first ever fanfic! But I'd appreciate constructive criticism as well! Anyway… :)
ANNE
Anne couldn't focus. As she ruffled through her chest of drawers, flinging blouses and skirts towards the open suitcase on her bed, she let out frustrated huffs and sighs.
She should've been filled with excitement, not this strange mix of anger and helplessness. After all, she was packing for college! For Queens college, her lifelong dream for which she'd worked so hard ever since her final year of school at Avonlea started back in August. She should be filled with pride and joy that not only had she passed her entrance exams, she'd gotten the highest scores in her class! Or at least had tied for highest scores…with him.
As her mind once again strayed to thoughts of Gilbert Blythe, Anne began pacing across the creaky wooden floor of her room. Not more than an hour ago, at Ms. Stacey's graduation party, she had been standing face to face with him, shaking his hand in celebration, searching his handsome, lovely, beautiful—Stop it, Anne! she thought, shaking her head in frustration. She'd been searching his face for an answer, some sort of answer, to her question of whether or not he had anything else to say. She could've sworn she'd seen that look in his eyes as she waited for his response, the same look that Ruby Gillis said he had when Anne brought up the Take-Notice board, the same look he had during that glorious dance practice at school…
But all he had said to her, as they stood in Ms. Stacey's parlor, was, "Er…congratulations!" and her glimmer of hope disappeared.
And now, sitting on the edge of her bed after giving up any attempt of packing, anger had replaced Anne's hope. He couldn't think of a single thing to say other than "Congratulations" after reading the note? The note in which I bared my entire soul? Can he really be so quick to reject me just because I couldn't give him an answer in the mere 30 seconds he left me that night at the Ruins? Why do I even bother! she fumed. He's obviously found his answer in Winnifred and besides, he can go to the Sorbonne now, his dream, so why would he even consider a second glance at me? I'm a fool!
Anne's muddle of exasperating thoughts was suddenly interrupted by the sound of someone knocking at the front door. Still fuming with a conflicted look on her face, Anne stomped downstairs to answer to the visitor herself, since Marilla and Matthew were out harvesting out in the cornfields (which she would much rather be doing, but Marilla had insisted she start sorting out what she would bring with her to Queens). Expecting to see Rachel Lynde on the stoop, ready to give some of her infuriating advice or gossip, Anne yanked open the door with an agitated "Yes?!" But when she saw who her visitor was, her breath caught in her throat and her heart skipped a beat.
For it wasn't Rachel Lynde staring back at her with a mouth slightly agape and eyebrows raised in surprise. It was him. It was Gilbert Blythe.
