Life is Magic: The Dark Ritual
Chapter 1 of a new crossover story I'm experimenting with, in this case, Life is Strange and Harry Potter. Could be a bit tricky but I'm hoping it will work, anyway, hope you enjoy it.
Disclaimer: I don't own Life is Strange, Harry Potter or their characters.
Chapter 1
Awakening to the new day, the eleven year old boy yawned as he got dressed, he was of average height for his age, with short dark brown hair, slightly messy and reaching just above his ears, dark brown eyes and tanned skin. He was also rather skinny.
"Daniel, breakfast." His father called through to him.
Daniel quickly finished dressing. "Coming."
Daniel quickly exited his bedroom and headed through to the kitchen. There cooking was his father, Esteban Diaz, a man in his forties.
Esteban had tanned skin, short, dark brown hair, dark brown eyes and a five-o-clock shadow. Fitting for his job as a mechanic, he was wearing a tan button-up work shirt with one half tucked into his pants and its sleeves rolled just past his elbows, a white undershirt, blue jeans covered in light stains, and yellowish-brown laced boots, along with a brown-and-gold watch on his left wrist. He was likely getting ready for work that day.
It was from Esteban that Daniel acquired his Hispanic traits, Esteban being Mexican. His absent mother was Caucasian-American however. Although they no longer lived in America, moving to England 9 years ago. But then that wasn't the only unusual thing about their family. Or at least, for him, his eighteen year old brother Sean, or their mother. Esteban was in fact the only 'normal' one in the family.
"So...is Sean gonna make it back home, or am I with a babysitter again, trying to keep things from...happening?" Daniel asked as he began to eat.
Esteban sat down to have his own breakfast.
As he did so he shook his head, smiling widely.
"Actually, neither." Esteban revealed. "I won't be going into work until late, Sean is going to try and meet up with us though...since something important arrived today."
Daniel froze, eyes wide. Sure enough his father then showed him a letter in a parchment envelope, one he recognized at once.
"Wow..." He gasped, taking it eagerly.
Esteban watched with a grin as Daniel quickly opened it and read the first of two sheets of parchment inside.
'Dear Mr Diaz.
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.
Term begins on 1 September. We await your owl no later than 31 July.
Yours Sincerely
Minerva McGonagall
Deputy Headmistress'
Sure enough the second parchment sheet had the necessary list of equipment and uniform and such. That was the unusual thing about their family. Daniel, like his brother Sean, was a wizard. Sean had already been to the school and graduated at the end of the previous school year. That was why he wasn't home, having left due to already pursuing his career. Their mother, Karen Reynolds, had been a Witch while Esteban was what was known in the Magical World as a Muggle, not one drop of magical blood in his veins. Nevertheless, thanks to Karen and now his sons, he was part of the Magical World and loved every second of it.
Seeing Daniel's expression Esteban laughed.
"Yes, it's here, so we've got to go to Diagon Alley, once we've eaten." He explained. "That's what I meant about Sean, he's going to try and meet us there. But it might not be easy, it is World Cup year."
Daniel nodded at that. In the Wizarding World, there was one sport that dominated all others and that was Quidditch. Having excelled at Quidditch while at Hogwarts, Sean had gone pro and almost as soon as he left school, his talent had been spotted and earned him a place in the Tutshill Tornados as a Seeker and even a reserve spot on the English National Quidditch Team.
"Ah, I...I see." He replied. 'Another thing to worry about,'
Excited as he was, Daniel did have some slight reservations about Hogwarts, namely that, once there, he would be thought of simply as Sean Diaz's brother. With Sean pursuing the fame of a Quidditch career, that shadow he had to step out of would become even bigger. Luckily Esteban knew just how to pull him out of those thoughts.
"You know, if you've got that letter, who else will have it too." He remarked.
Daniel perked up at once. "Oh yeah, Noah..."
Noah Fairweather was Daniel's best friend and also a wizard, he was different from Daniel in that both his parents were magical, that said, all three of them had a strong fascination for the Muggle World and learned much from Esteban and Daniel in that regard. Thoroughly cheered by the thought of attending Hogwarts with his best friend, Daniel finished his breakfast as they had to get to Diagon Alley.
Arriving at the Leaky Cauldron, Daniel was grinning as he and Noah entered, their families behind them. Muggles normally couldn't even see the Leaky Cauldron, let alone enter, but Esteban was a special case. Noah was the same age as Daniel with short black hair, brown eyes and fair skin, like Daniel he was skinny, the two of them both grinning widely as they looked forwards to Hogwarts already.
Heading through to the back they approached the wall which hid the entrance to Diagon Alley. Once the entrance was opened, a simple tap of Noah's father's wand on the third brick on the left, they entered Diagon Alley. Daniel bit his lip, he had only been 4 years old the first time he came here, with his father and Sean. It had been complicated for them, luckily a member of the Hogwarts Faculty had accompanied them to ensure things went smoothly. Things got easier by Sean's third year when finally a vault had been opened in the Wizard Bank Gringotts for the Diaz family.
'Mom and her family are quite rich, so it wasn't really much hassle for them to have some of their money sent here for us...now Sean will be adding to it by making his own money.' Daniel reflected.
Despite living in England for years, the American terms still found their way into his speech and thoughts.
"Hey, Daniel, you in there?"
He started. "Huh, oh, sorry Noah, was just, thinking."
Noah laughed. "I noticed, well, c'mon, we're heading to Gringotts now."
Daniel nodded and jogged to catch up, only now realising he had been falling behind.
After getting their money from Gringotts, trusting the boys to behave, the families of both Noah and Daniel went to get the rest of what they would need while the boys got their uniforms from Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions. Entering the witch behind the counter looked up and smiled at them.
"Ah, hello there, starting Hogwarts?" She queried and when they nodded continued. "Well, let's get you fitted up."
She guided them over to where the fitting took place. Not too long afterwards they left and prepared to head to Flourish and Blotts to get their books, and meet up with their families as agreed earlier. It was then they nearly walked into someone else.
"Oh, sorry." A nervous boy's voice blurted out.
Daniel shook his head. "No, it's cool, you okay?"
"Y-yeah."
They got a good look at the boy now. He was roughly the same height as them, skinny and rather pale, especially compared to Daniel, his skin almost translucent. He had short blond hair, blue eyes, and freckles, mainly across the bridge of his nose.
He gave them a tremulous smile. "H-hi...You um, going to Hogwarts too?"
"Yeah, that's right, our first year." Daniel greeted him. "I'm Daniel Diaz, this is Noah Fairweather."
Noah nodded. "Hi".
"I'm I'm Christopher Eriksen, prefer, Chris though." The boy replied.
Daniel and Noah shared a look, the boy seemed really nervous.
Hoping to ease him, Daniel decided to ask.
"So, where are your family, are they-?"
"Oh um, not...I..." Chris mumbled. "I'm here with someone from Hogwarts, they're at the Apothecary. Dad...he couldn't come."
Daniel and Noah shared another look, the boy was acting strange, seemingly trying to avoid talking about his family, he hadn't even mentioned his mother.
"It is nerve racking." Noah said. "All this, but, you get used to it, I'm surprised you're not at least aware already."
Chris shuffled his feet. "Well, I never...I never even heard about any of this, didn't know all the strange stuff I was doing was magic, until I got the letter."
Suddenly it made sense now, exactly why Chris was so nervous, partly why he was with someone from Hogwarts and not his family. He was Muggle-Born, neither of his parents had magic.
"Oh sorry, we didn't mean to..." Noah began.
Chris shook his head. "It's, it's fine...I should, I should get going. I'll see you at Hogwarts?"
"Sure, maybe even before that, when we're on the way." Daniel remarked with a smile. "It'll be nice to meet up with you again."
"I...thanks, I'll see you." Chris said.
With that he left, leaving Daniel and Noah a little surprised by the meeting, as well as being concerned.
As it turned out, they would meet Chris before the 1st of September. Meeting up with their families and getting their books they soon had everything they needed except for one thing, a wand. They had also been joined by Sean Diaz, Daniel's older brother. At eighteen he was tall with a toned but light build, tanned skin, short messy dark brown hair and brown eyes. He was of course drawing a lot of attention, but to Daniel's relief, he kept focused on the task at hand and waved off any encroaching fans. Heading for Ollivanders they saw the familiar mop of blonde hair.
"Chris?"
The boy started and turned, the elderly witch with him also turned, but seemed to relax upon seeing Chris' smile.
"Oh Daniel, Noah, hi." He greeted them.
Their families greeted Chris kindly, Daniel and Noah had already explained about their meeting with Chris to them, although it was only now they noticed but tactfully said nothing about, that most of Chris' purchases, his robes and such, appeared to be second-hand. After some idle chat they entered the store to get their wands.
"Ah, welcome, hello." Came the greeting as they entered.
All three boys started, but then calmed down when they saw old Mr. Ollivander behind his counter, smiling warmly at them. "So, let us see if we can't match you three to a wand...hmmm..."
As he worked on verifying their wand arms and making necessary preparation Ollivander began perusing a few wands as he did so he looked up and spotted Sean.
"Ah Sean Diaz, delightful to see you again." He greeted. "Mahogany, 12 inches, Dragon Heartstring, pleasantly springy."
Sean smiled and nodded. "Yes, exactly."
Ollivander was once again showing his impressive memory, which hadn't dulled despite his age. He soon began attempting to pair the three boys to the perfect wand for them.
It took a while and they seemed to try about every wand in the shop until finally, he found two wands and offered them to Daniel and Noah.
"Now then, Mr. Fairweather, try this, Ebony and Phoenix tail feather, 10 inches." Ollivander explained. "Mr. Diaz, Larch and Dragon Heartstring, 12 inches. Best suited to those with hidden and unexpected talents."
Daniel raised an eyebrow, dubious at that, hidden talents, him. But then, to his surprise. There was a warmth that suddenly spread through her fingers, a quick glance at Noah suggested a similar reaction. With a careful wave the wands both emitted a shower of stars and Ollivander grinned widely while their respective families stood up, smiling proudly.
"Excellent, well done, excellent work. Oh I'm sure both of you will have a very interesting future ahead of you." Ollivander stated. "Now, Mr. Eriksen...an interesting combination, Cypress and Unicorn Tail Hair, 10 and a ¼ inches."
Chris took the wand and, if his sharp intake of breath was anything to go by, was feeling similar effects that Noah and Daniel had felt with their wands. Sure enough, his wand produced the same effect, ensuring that this wand was indeed matched for him. After paying for the wands and leaving Ollivander's shop, it was decided for the boys to spend some time getting to know each other and so they returned to the Leaky Cauldron.
So they spent some time together, talking, most importantly, given Chris's nervousness, they told him what they knew about Hogwarts, as well as how to get there, as they were given their train tickets, how to get onto Platform 9 and ¾ and, perhaps most importantly, they reassured him they'd gladly stick by him.
Chris smiled at that, feeling hopeful that he had finally made some friends. By the time they left and went their separate ways, heading back to their homes, Chris felt less nervous, and was looking forward to his first year at Hogwarts.
