Hermione Granger scanned the rows full of dusty volumes and stories. A few people were scattered across the bookstore, most of them around twenty years old, occasionally walking up to the counter to buy a drink or a granola bar. It was very late, very late indeed, and even Hermione herself was starting to feel tired. But she desperately wanted to get in a few more hours of reading.
So what else could she do but walk up to the counter and order a cup of coffee?
"5 dollars, please," the bartender behind the coffee grinder said, holding a gloved hand out for the money. Hermione rummaged in her pocket for some change and extracted a dirt-covered five-pound note. The barista handed Hermione a steaming mug full of milk-topped coffee. She murmured a word of thanks and made her way to a nearby table.
Hermione yawned hugely, clutching her warm cup in her hand, a book tucked under the other. What she really needed was a nice, long read...
Then without warning, coffee spilled all over her. Books tumbled to the floor, scalding caffeine stained Hermione's clothes and platinum blonde could be seen moving under her body.
Platinum blonde hair? No, it couldn't be...
"Evening, Granger," Draco Malfoy said, grimacing as coffee trickled out of his expensive-looking shoes.
"Evening, Malfoy," Hermione nodded, seeing the ruined shoes and feeling guilt run through her body. "Oh, I'm so sorry about the spill, it's just that I wasn't watching where I was going and-"
An awkward silence fell between them, broken only by the sounds of books being stuffed into their shelves. Hermione hadn't seen Draco Malfoy for almost three years, hadn't seen him since the time they had graduated from the fancy private school they had gone to.
Was a big bully at her school too.
Malfoy glanced at her smashed cup of coffee and then at his own.
"Uh, do you wanna share with me?" He asked, indicating his cup of coffee.
Hermione really didn't want to share with Malfoy. But what more did she have to lose?
"Sure," she muttered.
Draco led her to a table beside a large window with seats made out of wicker. They sat down, Draco inserted two straws into the coffee mug, and they drank the coffee, not talking to each other. After a few minutes, Draco broke the tension.
"So what have you been doing since we graduated?"
And so Hermione told him about her career as a doctor, how she had developed a liking for coffee and the death of her cat, Crookshanks.
Draco told Hermione about the dog he adopted, how his father had become more kind-hearted and how much he disliked snakes.
And with that, they started to get along.
"And so," Hermione sniggered, over their fourth cup of coffee, "And so, I tell the git that I'm not interested anymore, but he doesn't listen and gets beaten up by Harry"
Draco snickered. He rather liked talking to Hermione. And judging by the expression on Hermione's face, she rather liked talking to him too.
Hermione smiled. "So, any stories of your own?" she asked Draco.
"No, not really," Draco shrugged. Other people's stories are always far more entertaining than your own, of course.
Hermione shook her head and called over the barista for another coffee. Draco looked over at her, amused.
"You're not going to get any sleep for at least a week with all that coffee," he said.
Hermione rolled her eyes. "I'm gonna be fine," she said. "Besides, I need the time to read"
Draco cocked his head to the side. "I've never met someone who loved reading so much"
Hermione rolled her eyes a second time and checked her watch. Her eyes widened. "Woah, 9 o'clock already? I'd better go and get these books bought"
Draco watched Hermione hand over a ten-pound note and heave her books into a bag. He narrowed his grey eyes and walked up to her. Hermione looked at him quizzically. Draco grinned.
Any boy would be lucky to be with Hermione. And he knew that he would do anything to be that boy.
"Hermione?" Draco said, cocking his head to the side again.
"Yeah?"
"Go out with me?" he said the last words quietly, but hopefully. Hermione stared.
Then she smiled.
"I haven't seen you for a long time, Draco, but I saw you again today, and you are so kind and funny. I'm not ready to date yet, but maybe we could start as friends?" Hermione said this with an air of hope.
So friends they became.
And one day, over another cup of coffee and a pile of books, Hermione and Draco really did start dating, and a happy couple they were.
