This was something me and my co-writer thought about after seeing the end of Steven Universe Future. We wanted Spencer to have something good happen to her, something that would give her some closure. That's where this one-shot came from.
We hope you guys enjoy it!
It had been a few days since Steven had left and Greg was finally moved into the beach house. It was weird having him in Steven's old room but not unwelcome.
That afternoon, Spencer was video chatting with Steven, who had stopped at a motel for the night. "So how is everyone?" He asked.
Spencer smiled softly. "Still missing you." She said. She blushed and looked away. "And so am I." She mumbled. Steven chuckled.
"I miss you guys too." He said. As he talked, Spencer walked out of her room on the other side of the beach house. She walked down the stairs where she saw Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl and Silver gathered in the kitchen. Greg was there as well. They smiled when they saw Spencer.
"Hey, Spence!" Greg called. "Who are you talking to?"
"Steven." Spencer answered. Everyone suddenly ran over, Pearl grabbing Spencer's phone out of her hand.
"Steven!" She called. "Steven! Are you safe? Where are you?"
Spencer heard Steven laugh. "I'm fine, Pearl, just stopped at a motel."
After a bit more conversation, Garnet convinced Pearl to give Spencer her phone back, who took it back smiling. "As you can see, everyone misses you dearly." She said.
"I know." Steven said. He yawned. "Well, I'm going to head to bed early. Got a long day tomorrow. I'll talk to you later, Spence."
Spencer nodded. "Talk to you later. Love ya, bro." She said.
"Love you too, sis." Steven answered and hung up.
Spencer sank onto the couch, closing her eyes. She may have been fully supportive of Steven leaving, but she still wasn't sure. Steven had kept her grounded in the three years she had lived with him. Without him there, Spencer wasn't sure about anything.
As she was about to get up and head to her room, her phone rang. She looked at the screen, reading the number and not recognizing it. She groaned and answered.
"Who is this?" she asked. "I don't know your number."
"Aw, that's so hurtful." A familiar voice said, making Spencer's blood run cold. Her hands started shaking as the voice of her father continued. "I didn't appreciate you putting me in jail." Spencer opened her mouth to deny it but she was cut off. "Don't try and lie. Only one person knew about all the things done to you. But you can make it up to me. Meet me at this location tomorrow," He said a place that was on the outskirts of Beach City. "And we can have a little chat."
He hung up and Spencer's shaking hand finally dropped her phone onto the couch as she sat with wide eyes, her whole body shaking. She must have zoned out because the next thing she was aware of was Greg sitting on the couch in front of her, looking worried as he gently shook her.
"Spencer? Spencer! Are you okay?" he asked. Spencer blinked and looked up at him, tears coming to her eyes.
"H-he f-found m-me." She stammered.
"Who found you?" Spencer looked to her left and saw the Gems standing beside her, all of them looking worried. Pearl sat on Spencer's other side, grabbing her hand. Silver knelt down in front of her, putting her hands on Spencer's knees. Spencer looked up at Garnet, who gave a slight nod.
"My father." She said, finally. Everyone except Garnet gasped.
"The good for nothing man who abused you just because Jade was gone?" Silver exclaimed. Spencer nodded slowly. She took a deep breath and started telling them what her father had said and what he wanted her to do. As she spoke, she felt both Greg and Pearl wrap their arms around her until she finished speaking.
"What are you going to do?" Amethyst asked.
Spencer took a deep breath. "I'm going to go meet him." She said, shocking everyone. "If I don't go meet him, he'll come looking for me. And I can't run from him forever."
"You won't be going alone." Greg said. "I'm going too. I've got a few things I wanna say to him."
"And I'm coming too." Silver said, smiling softly. "No way is my best friend confronting her horrible father without some backup." Spencer chuckled, nodding.
"Thanks." She said.
The next morning, Greg woke Spencer up and after a breakfast in silence, they joined Silver in walking to Greg's van. Spencer looked at the Gems, Garnet walking towards her. The fusion knelt down in front of Spencer, putting her hands on the half-gem's shoulders. "Everything will be okay." She said.
"Is that Future Vision talking or are you just being encouraging?" Spencer asked. Garnet only smiled before standing back up and walking back to the beach house. All three Gems waved as Greg started the van and drove off.
It didn't take them long to get to the location, but the closer they got, the more Spencer's heart threatened to burst out of her chest in fear. As soon as they arrived, Spencer looked out of the window, looking around for the face that still terrorized her in her nightmares.
Finally, her eyes landed on the man she was searching for. Marcus Daniels was sitting at a table, sipping a cup of coffee. His greasy, brown hair hung in clumps, brushing his shoulders. The brown eyes that he passed on to Spencer looked around until they landed on the van, and subsequently, Spencer herself. He grinned an evil smile, missing teeth showing clearly.
Spencer took a deep breath and got out of the van, followed closely by Greg and Silver. She slowly walked over to Marcus, whose grin only widened.
"There's my little girl." He sneered. He gestured to the empty chair across from him. "Sit down. We have a lot to talk about." Spencer reluctantly sat down, wrapping her arms around herself, her hands clutching the fabric of her jacket tightly. Marcus looked her up and down, chuckling. "You're looking very well for a little brat."
"Don't call her a brat!" Silver snapped.
Marcus looked up at her, whistling. "Woah, Spencer, got yourself a couple of body guards, huh? And one of them's very cute." He winked at Silver, who groaned in disgust. Then Marcus' eyes landed on Greg. "But who's the fat guy?"
"I've been doing what you should've been doing!" Greg yelled. "I've been helping take care of the daughter you abandoned."
"Daughter?" Marcus questioned, rolling his eyes. "I don't see a daughter. All I see is a little freak who stole the woman I loved away from me just by being born." He chuckled. "Does she behave herself? If she doesn't behave herself, you've gotta give her a few smacks with a bat and that'll usually shut her up."
Tears had started streaming down Spencer's cheeks as she hugged herself tighter. Greg had had enough.
"Stop it!" He shouted. Marcus lazily gazed up at the other man. Greg was fuming, his hands clenched so tightly into fists that his knuckles were turning white. He fixed Marcus with the angriest look Spencer had ever seen on his face. "Spencer is not some anime for you to torment! She's a living being who deserves love and attention from people close to her, most importantly from the man who is supposed to be her father! You are the worst human being I've ever met and I'm ashamed to be of the same species as you! The last three years me and others have given Spencer more love then you gave her the first eleven years since she was born!"
"Jade must've told you that having Spencer would mean giving up her physical form!" Silver chimed in. "There was no way for both Jade and Spencer to exist! It was an equivalent exchange that Jade was happy to give! And all you gave this precious girl was pain and sorrow and made her regret ever being born! On top of that, you hurt her and even scarred her! Did you know that there's hardly a night that goes by where I don't hear Spencer waking up at night screaming from nightmares involving you!?"
"If Mom had known who you really were, I don't think she-"Spencer started to say only for Marcus to cut her off.
"You don't have the right to talk about her!" He snapped, standing up and raising a hand to strike Spencer when the end of a staff suddenly appeared in his face between his eyes. He looked up to see Silver's icy glare, her eyes shadowed in anger.
"Don't you dare." Silver hissed.
"Don't you lay a hand on her!" Greg snapped. "She doesn't deserve anything you've ever given her!"
Marcus looked unfazed as the human and Gem yelled at him. He just sat back down and casually sipped his coffee as they shouted. In the meantime, Spencer was still shaking, her eyes wide as she began to curl into a ball, one of her defense mechanisms from when she was a child.
"I'm glad I ran away!" Spencer finally shouted, nearly in tears but holding them in. "And I'm not sure you realize it, but… you were also hurting her! You attacked both of us! It wasn't just me!"
At this, Marcus lunged across the table to grab Spencer, but Silver was too quick for him. Using the prongs of her staff, Silver grabbed Marcus by his shirt, lifting him up slightly.
"Don't you even try to touch her." Silver snapped before tossing him away from Spencer with a rough thrust downward sweep of her staff.
Greg stood between Spencer and Marcus, slamming a piece of paper down in front of Marcus, who looked up at him with an uncaring expression. "What is this?" he asked, crossing his arms.
"Papers you need to sign." Greg said, glaring at him.
"And what if I don't?" Marcus challenged, ignoring the papers and continuing to glare at Greg. "What's this for?"
"How could a human being do this to another human being?" Greg asked, never noticing that Spencer had brought up her phone and was recording him. "Do you feel powerful when you hurt defenseless children? Does it make you feel more important?" He sighed and turned his attention back to the papers. "Once you sign these, your parental rights will be terminated and I'll be able to adopt Spencer and give her the life she deserves."
Spencer's eyes widened as she lowered her phone and stared at Greg. "Adopt me?" She mumbled. Greg looked back at her and smiled, nodding. Marcus laughed.
"Who would even want her?" he asked, then froze as the ground started shaking.
Greg, Silver and Spencer looked around until their eyes landed on the giant form of Alexandrite running towards them. Since it wasn't too far, it didn't take long for the large fusion to end up beside them. They also saw that Bismuth, Lapis and Peridot had come as well.
Greg turned back to Marcus, smirking. "We all do." He said. Alexandrite picked Marcus up, screaming in his face before tossing him into the air, where he was caught by a watery fist courtesy of Lapis, who then tossed him to Bismuth, who grabbed him by the front of his shirt and pulled him so that they were face to face. She started speaking in a fierce whisper that had even Marcus shaking.
"You said you're her father?" Bismuth said. "Let me tell you something then: That little girl is the sweetest little one I've ever met. She's got a lot of people here that love her. And here's something else for you: If you ever hurt her again, I will personally see to it that it's the last time she ever sees the likes of you."
Suddenly, Lapis's watery hand grabbed him again, pulling him up and then depositing him back on the ground in front of Greg, who had a protective hand on Spencer's shoulder as Marcus stared up at her. A pat on his shoulder made him turn, where he saw Peridot wagging a pen in front of his face.
Marcus gulped, taking in Bismuth's words. Peridot spoke. "Uh technically speaking I think you're going to need this ink stylus now."
Marcus glared at them before snatching the pen out of Peridot's hand. "Fine!" he snapped, signing the paper. "You can have her! Good riddance!"
A glowing light came from behind him and he turned as Alexandrite unfused and the now unfused gems running towards him. "That's enough out of you!" Garnet shouted.
Marcus screamed and ran, Amethyst yelling after him "Yeah! You better run!" She snapped her whip once and looked at Spencer, smiling softly. "Good riddance."
Suddenly Spencer was enveloped in the biggest hug ever as the Gems, Bismuth, Lapis, Peridot, Silver and Greg wrapped their arms around her.
A couple of days later, Spencer was staring at the papers Greg had handed her, disbelief on her face. She looked up at Greg, who was sitting on the couch next to her.
"Is this really real?" she asked, Greg smiling and nodding. Spencer looked back at the adoption papers, where her new name was written: Spencer Jade Universe. It was all real. Spencer was no longer Spencer Daniels, the abused daughter of a man she'd rather forget. Now she was Spencer Universe, daughter of a musician/band manager and younger sister to the savior of the galaxy.
As if on cue, her phone rang, alerting her to an incoming video call from her brother. When she answered, Steven's smiling face greeted her.
"Hey, sis!" He exclaimed. Spencer raised an eyebrow.
"You knew what Gre- uh, Dad was doing the whole time, didn't you?" she asked.
"He may have talked to me before I left asking if I minded him adopting you, which of course I said I didn't mind."
"Did you get the video I sent you of Dad telling Marcus off?" Spencer asked. She refused to acknowledge Marcus as her father any longer. Steven nodded.
"Oh yeah!" he exclaimed. "I rarely ever see Dad get that mad!"
"It was awesome!" Spencer exclaimed.
Greg blushed. "Aw man, Spencer, did you seriously record that?" Spencer nodded and Greg blushed again as both of his children laughed.
"Yeah, of course I did!" Spencer said. "I was proud of that!" She said this with a bright smile that was shared by Steven as well, showing the oldest Universe that his children were very proud of how he handled the situation.
They laughed for a few minutes before Steven spoke again. "I'm glad you have Dad, Spencer. Him and the Gems." A stray tear rolled down the older teen's face and Greg and Spencer shared a look before looking back at him. "I miss you guys. A lot."
"We miss you too, schtu-ball." Greg said.
"But we know that this is what you need." Spencer said. "When you're ready, we'll be here, waiting for you, arms open wide and a fridge full of homemade cookie cats." All three Universes laughed as Steven ended the call.
Spencer closed her eyes. One day, Steven would be back and their family would be whole again. Until then, she'd hold down the fort.
So what did you guys think? As i was writing Marcus, i wanted to punch him so hard. I suppose that means i did my job as a writer correctly then.
Hope you guys liked it! Review and let me know what you thought!
