EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MORNING

The sun is still low in the sky, but day has definitely broken.

PROFESSOR X (NARRATING)

Now this, this is an old story, one that has been told and retold countless times over countless generations and in countless languages and with countless variations. It's a story as old and multifaceted as mankind itself. And this is appropriate, for it is a story about mankind. It's not about the space shuttle landing, or our triumph over totalitarianism. It's not about us conquering a vicious disease or preventing a genocide, nothing so grandiose and exuberant as that. Usually, this story relates to only two or three people, unexciting, mundane pedestrian people, going about their daily lives, completely unaware of the act they play out, how that act has been written and rewritten for myriad scenarios. It's really quite simple, actually.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – PROFESSOR X'S CLASSROOM - MORNING

PROFESSOR X teaches advanced grade classes in all subjects. In this particular class, Philosophy, they are discussing morality. Professor X's classroom is surprisingly fairly simplistic: a single desk for him, with a computer on it, and a series of chairs. There are no desks; students sit on folding chairs in a circle along with Professor X. Sometimes they sit on the floor, if only for a different perspective. The atmosphere is designed to be less of a classroom and more of a conversation circle.

PROFESSOR X

It's a story about revenge: one person is wronged by another, so he decides to inflict a wrong upon the person who wronged him. Mankind has, for millennia, argued that revenge is the only true form of justice. The great Hammurabi, considered to be a benchmark in the evolution of jurisprudence, maintained the eye-for-an-eye approach to justice. If someone has had harm inflicted upon them by another, that person has the right to inflict like harm upon that person. But, to carry the analogy, an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. Individuals and even entire civilizations have spent their entire existence, not to mention their wealth, on quests for revenge. These quests are ultimately fruitless and unfulfilling, but the quest itself drives them beyond all reason, beyond all logic, and beyond all salvation. Who's read Moby Dick? (Several students put up their hands.) Good. The tale of Captain Ahab is a classic example of revenge. As you know, Ahab spent years hunting the white whale that crippled him. He forsook his life, his loved ones, and everything he was before, to exact revenge upon this creature. And in the end it destroyed him, and his ship. He lost everything, because he couldn't leave his pain. Revenge truly is fruitless. It can only end in one of two ways: either you achieve your goal of hurting the other person as much as they supposedly hurt you, or you don't. If you do, all you can say for yourself is that you're now capable of inflicting just as much harm on another human being as the monster who hurt you. You have now become that which you most hated and despised. And if you, like Ahab, abandoned everything you were and had in order to accomplish this, then you truly aren't the person you once were, and that's sad. And, if you failed to achieve said revenge, then that means you've given up everything you were, and let your hatred consume and destroy you, and you'll have to live with that until you get your vengeance, which may never even come. If you take one lesson away from this entire class, it's this one: revenge is never the answer. It's never acceptable to seek out your enemy to inflict pain upon them, simply because they've chosen to do it to you. As mutants, you know as well as I that there are many people in this country who look at us with dread. It's sad, but we must not subscribe to that same dread, and allow ourselves to lash out at them. We must set a good example for all mutants, to show the world that we're not the savage animals some people believe we are. We're human beings, too, and we must behave as such. In fact, we must behave even better than most. We must not succumb to revenge. Revenge will ultimately destroy you, and everything you hold dear, and in the end, it will not ease your pain and suffering.

INT. MILITARY INSTALLATION – GYRICH'S OFFICE – MORNING

GYRICH is pacing back and forth behind his desk, because he is too mad to remain seated. His coffee, still steaming almost as much as he is, sits on his desk.

GYRICH

Let me get this straight. You're saying that several mutants took out a couple soldiers, got the keys to their collars, unlocked said collars, and escaped.

The SOLDIER, standing on the opposite side of the desk is at full attention, but also clearly nervous.

SOLDIER

(Nervously timid.) Yes, sir.

GYRICH

(Still pacing.) And THEN, the mutants broke into the command centre which, for some GOD-forsaken reason was left COMPLETELY unmanned and unguarded, and got access to the controls for the collars.

SOLDIER

(Nervously timid) Yes, sir.

GYRICH

And then they unlocked and disabled ALL the collars, so ALL the mutants got free, and ran amok!

SOLDIER

(Nervously timid.) Yes, sir.

GYRICH

And THEN, as I understand it, they started tearing down the entire complex brick by fucking brick! You had to call in the sentinels to restore order! How long did this "little uprising" go on for?

SOLDIER

(Nervously timid.) Several hours, sir. By the time any of the soldiers noticed there was a problem, several of the cell blocks were already overrun. The mutants quickly broke out, and immediately set to destroying everything, and attacking any staff members they could find. And once the collars came off…well, it was pandemonium, sir! As for the sentinels, they were on the continent when the signal went out, and were out of position at the time.

GYRICH

Out of position! That's not my fucking problem! What the fuck were your men doing for "hours", while you were waiting for the sentinels to show up? Fondling each others' balls?

SOLDIER

(Nervously timid.) No, sir. They had us pinned down. Once their powers were restored, several mutants were more than a match for our weaponry. Sir, once the sentinels arrived, order was quickly restored.

GYRICH

Well, I think it would be a good idea to have some sentinels stationed on Genosha permanently, since they seem to be the only competent staff I have!

Gyrich sighs and slaps his coffee off his desk. The mug shatters against the wall, causing the soldier to jump. Frustrated, Gyrich slumps down in his chair, puts his head in his hands and stares at his desk.

GYRICH

How many soldiers did we lose?

SOLDIER

One hundred eighty-seven were either killed or seriously wounded.

Gyrich, teeth clenched, eye twitching, slowly looks up at the soldier.

GYRICH

One…fucking…hundred…and eighty…fucking…seven? And exactly how many mutants died?

SOLDIER

Forty-six mutants were either killed or seriously-

GYRICH

(Screaming.) FORTY-SIX!

GYRICH

FORTY-SIX GODDAMNED MUTANTS, DEAD! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME! FORTY-SIX! Do you realize what this means? President Conroy thinks this place is a prison camp for dangerous mutants. As far as he's concerned, these Goddamned mutants still have rights under the Constitution! How the FUCK am I gonna explain to him that FORTY-SIX mutants were killed during a riot! Do you have any fucking idea how the public is gonna react? They're gonna have my fucking balls for breakfast, you little shit! (Pauses and takes a deep breath, attempting to calm down.) What's the damage estimate?

SOLDIER

Damage estimates are still being calculated, but preliminary estimates are around one point five million-

Gyrich leaps from his desk, slamming his fists into his desk.

GYRICH

ONE AND A HALF MILLION FUCKING DOLLARS! ONE AND A HALF MILLION! WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED THERE! Where the fuck do you think this money is gonna come from now? You think I'm shitting out hundred dollar bills here?

SOLDIER

(Terrified.) Sir, the critical buildings, including all barracks, are operational. Some of the other facilities were heavily damaged, though. They require immediate attention and, considering recent events, it would be advisable to bring in outside labour. We don't trust the mutants, obviously.

GYRICH

(Sarcastic.) Obviously! Good thinking, soldier!

Gyrich, leaning against the desk, lets his head droop.

SOLDIER

(Nervously timid.) Sir, there is some more information which you should know.

GYRICH

Oh, goody. How can THIS get any worse? You gonna tell me that these mutants are massing a protest on Washington or something?

SOLDIER

(Nervously timid.) Not exactly, sir. (Takes out a piece of paper and unfolds it.) Five mutants are unaccounted for: four teens and one adult.

The Soldier hands the paper to Gyrich, who examines the paper.

SOLDIER

We've had teams out searching for their bodies for hours, but haven't found anything. Even the sentinels have come up empty. We're pretty sure they got off the island, but we don't know how.

Gyrich smiles as he reads the names and descriptions of the escaped mutants. He recognizes all of their names instantly.

GYRICH

I know how.

INT. X-MEN BASE – MEDICAL BAY - MORNING

MORPH stares blankly at the ceiling. Now relaxed, his wounds start to show. His face is swollen from bruises and the scars from cuts are now visible. His lips and eyes are puffy and swollen as well. He is hooked up to an IV, and is surrounded by monitoring machines. Now that the adrenaline rush from fear, anger, and joy that comes from freedom after so many weeks of captivity subsides, the pain of his injuries sets in. Everything he does – breathing, blinking, moving any joints – is severely laboured and difficult. As ICEMAN approaches from the other room, Morph's gaze darts towards him. His gaze is alarmingly focused. After a second or so, he relaxes again.

ICEMAN

(Walks up to the side of Morph's bed.) Hey, what was that all about?

MORPH

(Nervous.) I…I gotta say I'm not entirely comfortable here.

ICEMAN

Something wrong with the décor? I told Hank this place needed some colour-

MORPH

(Nervous.) It's…it's not that. Just that…just, I'm expecting one of the guards to come walking in any minute now.

ICEMAN

(Huffs.) Like to see 'em try. (Looks Morph over.) Wow. You look like shit.

Morph, still jittery, struggles to smile, and laughs for a moment, before coughing.

MORPH

Well, you never take me out anymore. I'm feeling unloved here.

ICEMAN

(Laughs.) Hey listen, how you doing?

Iceman taps Morph's IV bag.

ICEMAN

What is this? Turkey?

Morph, straining to turn his neck, looks at the IV bag.

MORPH

I think it's lasagne, with a Caesar salad and… (Looks up and licks his lips.) …I think it's a Bavarian lager as a drink.

ICEMAN

(Smiles.) Hope it was one of Warren's. He makes a mean lasagne…surprisingly. Seriously though, how you doing?

MORPH

Aside from the constant terror I'm feeling, I'm pretty… (Pauses.) …no, I'm sore all over. Hank said there are a couple of broken bones which healed wrong. Now that I can shape-shift again, it's not a huge problem, but it was stunting my healing.

ICEMAN

Well, I'm guessing you're glad to be out of that prison you were in and into a nice, warm, sterile… (Looks around the room.) …um…cold, sterile place. I see your point now.

MORPH

Bobby, you have no idea… (Stares at Iceman, terrified.) You have no idea. They called it a prison or detainment facility or whatever, but it was so much worse than that. The things they did to us, to the children… How they used to beat us, and spit on us, and swear at us, and…and… (His eyes start filling with tears.)

Morph has to pause for a moment to collect himself. Iceman listens, horrified.

MORPH

My God, Bobby. They treated us like…like we weren't even…like we were vermin or something. Bobby, it was worse than not caring whether we lived or died. They wanted us dead; they only kept us alive as long as we were useful to them. And they only gave us enough to stay alive. (Tears rolling down his face.) Bobby, mutants don't come out of Genosha alive. They only get out in body bags. We cannot allow this place to remain open. Who knows how many mutants die there everyday. Who knows how many are dying right now!

ICEMAN

Hey, hey, calm down. The Professor's on the case now. He's going straight to the top, to Congress. He's already contacted Washington. We're doing everything we can, legally. And, if that doesn't work… (Shrugs.) Then there's always smashy smashy. (Smiles wide.)

MORPH

(Smiles.) How are they girls?

ICEMAN

(Huffs and shakes his head.) Physically, they're only slightly better than you. They have lots of cuts and bruises, but nothing permanent. But they're pretty shaken up. We haven't had a chance to talk to them yet. They've been catching up on their sleep. Jean's gonna give them a full physical once they're feeling better, to make sure they weren't… (Embarrassed and solemn.) …Weren't, you know, taken advantage of or anything.

MORPH

(Sniffles.) Good idea. We overheard the guards laughing amongst themselves every now and then, about how they'd go into the girls' barracks at night, drug one or two, take them out and…take advantage.

ICEMAN

Fucking sickos. I swear to God, if they did anything to them…

MORPH

Imagine, Bobby…

Morph cocks his head forward, staring straight at Iceman.

MORPH

…Thank God WE got out! Imagine what the people who are still there are going through now! Imagine the fate to which we've left them.

Morph's head flops back down on the pillow, and he looks away in sadness, tears continuing down his cheek.

Meanwhile, POLARIS is sitting at the side of JUBILEE's bed, keeping her and SHADOWCAT company.

POLARIS

Hey there, young lady. You're…looking better.

MCU (SLIGHTLY HIGH ANGLE) OF JUBILEE.

Jubilee has a respirator tube in her nose, and is hooked up to an IV, as well as several monitoring devices. She is in far better condition than Morph, but is still being treated for contaminant inhalation and physical abuse. She has several bruises and cuts on her body, but these re mostly from physical labour, unlike Morph's, which are from physical abuse. Both her skin and Shadowcat's are incredibly dark, the result of being out in the sun for the entire day, day-in and day-out, for weeks on an island just a few kilometres south of the equator.

JUBILEE

(Visibly upset.) I'm just glad to be back here, and not there.

POLARIS

(Nods.) From what we saw, it was hell on Earth. So, this whole thing started because of a boy, eh?

JUBILEE

Yeah, should've known. All boys are pains in the a- erm…useless.

POLARIS

(Nods, understanding.) Sounds like this one was. What was the problem with him?

JUBILEE

He was fooling around with me, and also with some other chick!

POLARIS

Ah. Well, don't worry about him anymore. For people like him, it's all about seeing how far they can get with a girl. (Pauses.) Um…how far…did he get?

JUBILEE

(Looks down in shame.) Far enough.

Polaris looks awkwardly away for a moment, and then back at Jubilee.

POLARIS

Well, did you use protection?

Jubilee smiles, laughs for a moment, and then coughs briefly.

JUBILEE

Jesus, Ms. Dane! I got the birds 'n' the bees speech already! Don't need the after-school special!

Jubilee smiles politely, but then the smile fades, and she looks down in shame.

POLARIS

What's wrong?

JUBILEE

(Slowly looks up at Polaris, nervously.) Ms. Dane, you ever think that guys might be interested in you just because you're a mutant? When Jason found out I was a mutant – it was after…after, you know, we hooked up – when he found out, it's like he'd just hit the jackpot or something. It was like scoring with a mutant was a bag-n-brag, like a threesome or doing it in the Empire State Building… (Suddenly feeling awkward.) …not that I ever did anything like that…

Polaris looks at Jubilee suspiciously.

POLARIS

Uh…huh.

JUBILEE

Anyway, it's just…I don't want to be some sort of human oddity that guys are just gonna try and bag just to say they did.

POLARIS

(Sighs.) Unfortunately, being a mutant means you're unique. You're not like normal human beings, and that's exciting, in EVERY sense of the word. You have no idea how many guys were attracted to me, simply because of my hair! It also makes you a bit of an oddity. It'll attract guys, but remember that it's not the be-all and end-all of who you are. I don't want to go all seventh-grade sex-ed on you, but when you hit puberty, your body goes through a lot of changes.

JUBILEE

(Rolls her eyes and looks away.) Jesus, again with this…

POLARIS

No, really. The development of the mutant gene takes place during puberty, along with growth of everything else. And just like other parts of your body, guys might hone in on something which is strictly physical. You need to find a guy who appreciates you for you, not for what you look like or what you can do.

JUBILEE

Oh yeah, and how many guys like that are there? Cause I met a whole island of guys who were…they were just disgusting.

POLARIS

I…I can only imagine what you've been through over the last few weeks. But look, there are a lot of guys out there that are decent people. Not all guys are simply interested in your body.

JUBILEE

Oh yeah? What about Mister Drake? (Smiles playfully.) Come on, I see the way he looks at you.

Polaris looks at Jubilee with acute indignation, but quickly conceals it, feigning interest.

POLARIS

Oh really? Tell me, Jubilation, how exactly does Mister Drake look at me?

JUBILEE

(Smiles wide.) Like he wants to keep you after class for some extra-curricular physical education! (Laughs.)

Polaris stares awkwardly at Jubilee.

JUBILEE

Oh don't worry, Ms. Dane. It's cute! We all think it's really sweet. And you're both pretty hot, so it's not like you guys have bad taste or something.

POLARIS

(Smiles politely.) Okay! Well, this is an interesting topic, but enough about me! Let's get back to how you two are doing. (Looks at Shadowcat.) Kitty? How are you feeling there?

SHADOWCAT

I'm okay, Ms. Dane. It's just my…everything hurts.

POLARIS

Doctor McCoy says you don't have any broken bones, but lots of cuts and bruises. Mostly, you're dehydrated, malnourished, and overexposed from the sun. But anyway, right now, I think it's best of you just…take it easy for the next little while.

JUBILEE

(Shrugs.) I guess. I just don't know about guys anymore. I mean, now, the next time I meet a guy, I have to wonder exactly what about me he's interested in: whether it's because of who I am, or because of what I am.

POLARIS

Well, that's always the risk, isn't it? You never know why the other person really wants to be with you. You don't know if it's your personality, the jokes you tell, or if it is just something physical. But it's something you'll have to figure out about the other person, and it's always a case-by-case basis. You don't know what the other person's thinking… (Smiles.) …Unless you're a telepath or something.

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM – MORNING

EMMA, eyes closed, is using Cerebro. After several moments, she opens her eyes.

EMMA

Nothing.

Emma takes off the helmet and turns around in her chair to face ANGEL, who is leaning against the central table.

EMMA

I sense no any immediate reaction to the Genosha riot. No rise in military activity, no increased tension or panic anywhere. If there is a government response, I can't sense it.

ANGEL

(Shakes his head, disgusted.) Alright, thanks.

Emma watches, confused, as Angel turns to leave.

EMMA

You sound disappointed. Are you alright, Warren?

Angel does not answer at first, staring angrily at the floor.

ANGEL

I just can't believe a place like this exists. (Turns back to face Emma.) How the hell did we not know about this place? How could the government build such a huge facility and NOBODY knew about it?

EMMA

Genosha is a long way from here. I would imagine the government purchased the island and began construction there quietly. They must have selected mutants who had been in trouble with the law, and had no family or friends who would miss them if they disappeared.

ANGEL

Yeah, well, we missed Kevin and the kids. I mean, did you see what they did to him, to all of them? They could've killed them! And for what? Because of what they are! It's not even like they LOOK any different!

EMMA

You mean, like you?

ANGEL

(Surprised.) What?

EMMA

You pointed out that Kevin, Jubilee, Kitty, and John were attacked and brutally beaten, and their mutation isn't obvious to the naked eye. Yours is; I'm certain you were wondering what would've happened had they taken you and not Kevin. You're suddenly realizing how vulnerable you are.

ANGEL

(Huffs.) I knew how vulnerable I became the moment these… (Points to his wings.) …started to grow.

EMMA

All your life, you've been in a position of security, of power. Your schooling, your future, everything you ever needed, was never in doubt. You never had to struggle for anything in your life. But then your mutation developed, and everything changed. Now, you have to hide yourself in here. You don't feel safe being out in public anymore. And you're worried that the government will come for you next.

ANGEL

(Snarls.) What's your point, Emma?

EMMA

The point is… (Pauses.) I understand how you're feeling. I understand what it's like to want to isolate oneself from the rest of the world. Please, just remember that… (Pauses.) …that you're not alone. You can talk to me about these things.

Angel paces about for a few moments.

ANGEL

I just…I just don't understand how a place like Genosha could be allowed, how the abduction of US citizens could be allowed. And I want to know what they're planning next. Are they preparing to round us all up and ship us there? Are our days already numbered? Some of us can hide. (Looks down, ashamed.) Some of us can't.

Emma leans towards Angel and gently lifts his face up to hers.

EMMA

I won't let them take you, or any of us. The Professor won't, either. He's going to speak with the President. They'll put a stop to this.

ANGEL

I don't want to leave it at that. Get the word out to all your government contacts about this place. I'll do the same. In fact, there's one I need to get a hold of right now.

EXT. NEW YORK CITY – CITY HALL – MORNING

New York City Hall is bustling with people coming to and fro. Most are dressed in full business suits or appropriate dresses. A few people outside are dressed casually; they are walking past City Hall, and not stopping. A street meat vendor is stationed outside, and has a line-up of eager and friendly customers.

INT. NEW YORK CITY – CITY HALL – DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE – MORNING

The New York City District Attorney's Office – the office of Cameron Hodge – is simple but classy. The carpet is a nice plush turquoise. HODGE is the embodiment of a cliché Hollywood-esque bureaucrat: a store-bought businessman's haircut of blonde hair, a no-nonsense pair of reading glasses, and a vaguely athletic build concealed within a light grey suit. He is seated at his desk: large, solid, made of dark wood. A study lamp is on, highlighting several documents on his desk. Behind him is a bookcase which extends the length of the wall and is flanked by American flags. The wall facing out consists of full-length double-layered windows, and has a spectacular view of downtown New York. He has potted plants in the other corners, as well as several chairs facing his desk, for visitors.

SECRETARY (VIA INTERCOM)

Mister Hodge, you have a call on line one.

HODGE

Thanks. (Pushes a button on his phone, and goes back to reading his papers.) This is Hodge.

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM – MORNING

Angel paces about the Ward Room.

ANGEL

Cam! It's Warren, how are you?

HODGE (VIA PHONE)

Warren? Hi, how are you?

ANGEL

I'm alright. Do you have a minute?

INT. NEW YORK CITY – CITY HALL – DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE – MORNING

HODGE

I'm a little busy right now. What's up?

ANGEL

I have something I need to talk to you about…

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM – MORNING

ANGEL

…And you'll want to hear about this!

INT. CREED'S HOUSE – HALLWAY - MORNING

MRS. CREED comes down the stairs and saunters into the kitchen. She sheepishly rubs her face as she lumbers forward.

INT. CREED'S HOUSE – KITCHEN – MORNING

Mrs. Creed steps inside the Kitchen, but stops at the doorway. She smiles as she looks to the Kitchen table, where CREED is sitting.

MRS. CREED

You're up early.

Creed is sitting at the Kitchen table, staring with contentment out the window. He is aware of her presence, but only just. He smiles, but continues to stare out the window.

CREED

I wanted to see the sunrise.

Creed shakes his head, as if coming out of a trance, and turns to look at Mrs. Creed.

CREED

I'm sorry. How are you doing?

MRS. CREED

Oh I'm alright. Turned over this morning and noticed you weren't there. I figured you were still basking.

CREED

(Smiles.) It was an amazing rally, wasn't it?

Mrs. Creed walks towards Creed and sits down on his lap. She smiles at him and puts her arms around his neck.

MRS. CREED

Honey, it was an incredible rally. It restored hope to thousands of people who didn't have any hope left. Now they have someone to lead them, someone who will stand up for them. (Smiles.) You gave them something to believe in.

CREED

(Shakes his head humbly.) I didn't DO anything. It was a whole team project: Mister Yamamoto, Father Winchester, and of course, you. (Smiles.) None of it could have been done without you all.

MRS. CREED

Well, we may have helped out a little bit, but it was you who pushed it forward.

CREED

You know, I was thinking we should have Father Winchester and Mister Yamamoto over for dinner, to thank them for everything they've done.

MRS. CREED

Yeah, I think they'd like that. You wanna give them a call?

CREED

Yeah, I'll do that. I think Father Winchester has sermons all afternoon, and Mister Yamamoto is in the lab all day.

MRS. CREED

Really? What's he doing there? You've set up the lab in the estate, right?

CREED

Yeah. It's big, and it's isolated. I got him all the equipment he asked for, and in exchange he promised to work night and day until he discovered the secret to the mutant gene. I told him he didn't have to commit his entire days and nights to it, but he insisted.

Creed taps Mrs. Creed to get up, which she does. Creed stands up as well. Mrs. Creed heads to the fridge.

CREED

I'll call him right now. Tell him to come up for some air!

Creed smiles, and turns back to look out the window.

INT. X-MEN BASE – MEDICAL BAY - MORNING

Morph is now sitting up, slowly sipping on some chicken noodle soup. Iceman is sitting on the edge of the bed.

ICEMAN

Jean made that this morning. She says it's your favourite.

MORPH

(Smiles.) She's right. (Slurps some soup.) I love chicken noodle, especially Jean's.

ICEMAN

(Laughs.) The most BLAND soup around. Figures.

MORPH

(Smiles and slurps.) Whatever. A'm enjoyin' ma soup!

CYCLOPS

I hope so.

Iceman turns around as CYCLOPS walks up.

CYCLOPS

My girlfriend left me in bed to make that for you.

MORPH

Oh, that makes it MUCH more savoury! Cock-block-Scott chicken, my favourite!

CYCLOPS

(Shakes his head.) How are you feeling?

MORPH

(Slurps.) Feeling better. Everything still hurts, but the fact that I'm home makes it even better.

CYCLOPS

Good. We need to ask you some questions about your experiences.

Iceman turns to look at Cyclops, puzzled and annoyed.

ICEMAN

Really? This really has to be done right now?

CYCLOPS

(Nods.) The Professor's going to speak to the government this afternoon and he needs all the information he can get. I need to ask you about what happened.

ICEMAN

Can you at least wait till he's finished his soup? (Looks back at Morph.) Relax man; just take your time.

CYCLOPS

Bobby, we need to get a move on.

Iceman turns back to Cyclops.

CYCLOPS

The longer we wait, the longer that place stays open.

ICEMAN

The place isn't going to close down in the next five minutes. Let him rest! Besides, what's there to know? The place is a death camp, it's evil, and it's gotta be shut down! (Turns and looks at Morph.) I say we get all the mutants off the island, carpet bomb the whole place, and go for ice cream! (Smiles.)

CYCLOPS

(Sarcastic.) Good idea, Bobby! Because "Mutants carpet bomb ANOTHER government base" sounds great in the headlines!

ICEMAN

Look, all I'm saying is that Kevin's been through hell and back. Right now, what he NEEDS is his rest.

CYCLOPS

Yeah, and he'll get that. But right now, we NEED to get information out of him!

ICEMAN

What. The hell. Do I need to say to get this through your thick fucking skull, Scott! Kevin! Needs! His-

MORPH

Bobby, it's alright. Scott's right. We need to shut this place down right now. The sooner we can do that, the better.

Cyclops turns back to Morph. Iceman, clearly annoyed, glances at Cyclops and turns back to face Morph.

ICEMAN

Gimme a shout if you need anything.

Iceman stands up and leaves, staring down Cyclops as he does. Cyclops shakes his head and steps forward.

CYCLOPS

I am sorry for doing this, Kevin. I know you're probably not in the mood to-

MORPH

No. Don't worry about it. This needs to be done, and it needs to be done right now. Scott, you have NO idea – no idea - what went on there, the things they did to us. Every second we waste here means that Genosha remains open. Every second more means that more mutants are going…going to have…to… (Sniffles.)

Morph's eyes start to well up, and he pauses to regain his composure. Cyclops frowns and pats Morph's leg.

MORPH

You know, I never thought humans could get THAT bad – again! You'd think that, after all the genocides we've seen, that we'd have the good sense to treat each other better. I mean, how can you sleep at night, knowing what kind of pain you've inflicted on another human being? How can you be okay with yourself, knowing that there are so many people suffering around you, and knowing that you're the cause of their suffering?

CYCLOPS

(Sighs in sadness.) People like that are afraid. They're afraid of losing their livelihood, losing the power to control their own lives. They're frustrated, and don't know where to take their anger out, so they take it out on anyone who can't defend themselves. And that is us.

MORPH

Yeah, but why us?

CYCLOPS

We're an easy target. We're different from normal humans, and that makes it easy to separate us from them. And for years, for generations probably, humans have been told stories. Stories about the big bad mutants who kill innocent people and, I don't know, eat babies or something. That makes it easy for them.

By now, tears are rolling down Morph's cheek.

MORPH

You know, Scott? I just realized something, something I learned on Genosha, but…but it took me this long to, you know, like, process it. I think I understand it now, understand…them. You know, the soldiers, the… (Sniffs.) …the, um, the guards, the whole group of them running that place. They don't see us as humans, you know. I mean, they always SAID we weren't humans, but you know you just assume that's just mindless insulting with no real thought put into it, like telling someone they're fat or ugly or something. But no, these guys…they genuinely believe we are not human beings, that we're…we're some sort of demon or monster or something. They think we're cockroaches made to resemble humans. That's why they have no problem abusing us. THAT is how they're okay with themselves. Because it's not humans they're inflicting suffering on. It's…it's vermin. A disease. They're torturing yes, but only torturing an infestation. As far as the humans are concerned, we're carrying a plague that needs to be exterminated before it gets out of hand. Makes them feel alright about what they're doing. Seeing your enemy as less than human makes it easier to do things to them. It's nothing new; scientists have done it for centuries. We test on lower life forms because they're not human, even though we know we're putting them through incredible pain. You don't have to feel bad when it's not a person who's suffering, and once they get it into their heads that mutants aren't people, then that makes the way they treat mutants okay.

Cyclops frowns and looks down in sadness for a moment, but then looks back up at Morph.

CYCLOPS

It's spreading.

MORPH

What?

CYCLOPS

Anti-mutant sentiment. It's growing. As we were on our way to rescue you, we flew over a rally being held by the Friends of Humanity. It was massive! A lot of people came from all over the country to give their support to Graydon Creed and the FOH.

Morph frowns angrily, his lip trembling.

MORPH

We'll deal with Creed and the FOH soon enough. We need to get the word about Genosha out right now. The sooner we can shut down that place and the BASTARDS who made it, the better!

Cyclops nods with a firm lip.

Meanwhile, JEAN walks into the ward where Jubilee and Shadowcat are resting. Polaris is still there with them, sitting on the edge of Jubilee's bed. She is laughing with the two girls when Jean walks up. She stands between the girls' beds and looks at them.

JEAN

(Smiles politely.) There's a good sound. How are you girls feeling?

SHADOWCAT

Feeling much better now, Ms. Grey. It's REALLY good to be home, with beds that are cushy and rooms. And showers! I haven't felt this clean in weeks! It's amazing!

JEAN

(Turns to look at Jubilee.) And how are you doing, Ms. Lee? How's it feel to be back?

Jubilee smiles politely, obviously trying to conceal her sadness.

JUBILEE

Yeah, it's good to not be stained in blood and sweat.

Jean senses something in Jubilee, but chooses not to confront her in front of everyone else.

JEAN

Well, I'm sorry ladies, but I've got to ask you some questions. Obviously, we want the Genosha camp shut down ASAP, so Professor Xavier is going to address Congress as soon as he can, to get the word out to the public, and he wants to tell about your experiences.

Jubilee and Shadowcat look glance at each other. Jubilee looks away awkwardly, ashamed.

JUBILEE

I'm actually really tired. If it's okay, I'd like to do it later.

Jean watches Jubilee, concerned. After a moment, she turns to look at Shadowcat.

SHADOWCAT

Well, um, I can talk to you right now…if you want.

Jubilee stares solemnly at the floor.

SHADOWCAT

J will catch you up later.

Jean glances back at Jubilee for another moment, and then smiles at Shadowcat.

JEAN

Yeah, no problem. Shall we begin?

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – MAIN HALLWAY - MORNING

MacTaggert walks slowly down the hall towards Professor X's Office. As she does, she nods to the old man walking past. She looks through the door windows into the classrooms as she walks.

Inside the classroom, BEAST is busy lecturing students on chemistry. MacTaggert stops and leans in slightly to watch closer.

FLASHBACK BEGINS.

INT. UNITED KINGDOM – OXFORD – OXFORD UNIVERSITY – CHEMISTRY LABORATORY - AFTERNOON

It is the end of the class, and the students begin to pack up.

CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR

Alright, so I want you to finish reading up the rest of this chapter, and start on the next one, which also deals with genetic mutation through radiation.

A young MacTaggert starts packing up her books and bags as she chats with her friends.

CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR

Ms. MacTaggert, may I speak to you a moment?

MacTaggert tells her friends to go on, and that she will catch up with them later.

MACTAGGERT

You wanted to see me, Professor?

The Chemistry Professor picks up MacTaggert's research proposal from his podium.

CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR

Yes, I've been reading your research proposal on genetic mutation. It's really very interesting. You want to focus on natural mutation, correct?

MACTAGGERT

That's right. I think that genetic mutation operates completely independent of a host's environment, and that the mutant gene can be detected in early infancy, or even in vitro.

CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR

A very interesting proposal indeed. It's aggressive. It's innovative. It's crazy! I like it. (Puts down the proposal.) BUT, it's more than you can handle.

MACTAGGERT

(Alarmed.) But sir, I know I can do it. I've already begun gathering my preliminary research notes, and I know what equipment I'll need and when! I'm ready to take on this project. Please!

The Chemistry Professor stares at MacTaggert, not entirely convinced. Eventually, he huffs and shakes his head.

CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR

You know I have a weakness for ambitious young Scottish women!

MacTaggert smiles wide and bounces lightly.

CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR

It'll be the death of me one day. Alright, fine! The project's yours. BUT if you blow up my lab, or create some super-mutant or something, you're done FOREVER! Well, maybe not with the super-mutant thing; if that happens, you let me know. Anyway, I'm not going to be around often enough to supervise your work, so I'm letting one of my TAs supervise you directly.

MacTaggert's smile slowly drops away.

MACTAGGERT

A…a TA…sir?

CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR

Yes, a TA. It's short for teacher's assistant-

MACTAGGERT

(Awkward.) Yes…yes sir, I know what it is.

CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR

Don't worry; he's the best in this field. If there's anyone here who knows ANYTHING about genetic mutation, it's him. Moira MacTaggert, I'd like you to meet Charles Xavier.

Both the Chemistry Professor and MacTaggert turn and look at the young Xavier, who is standing behind them. Xavier walks up and extends his hand.

XAVIER

(Smiles.) A pleasure to meet you.

MacTaggert smiles politely, then turns back to the Chemistry Professor.

CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR

Charles read over your proposal. He's just as excited as I am.

XAVIER

Your theories on genetic mutation are very progressive. I'm looking forward to seeing your initial results.

CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR

Moira's been one of my best students. I've no doubt you two will produce something amazing. Moira, you'll coordinate your research with Charles. I've instructed him to use his discretion in giving you supplies, but I don't think there'll be any problems. Charles, you're to submit weekly reports on her progress. Nothing fancy or long; just an overview on what she's up to.

MacTaggert looks at Xavier once more and reluctantly smiles. She really would rather not have anyone constantly looking over her shoulder, especially another student, regardless of his knowledge and expertise. Xavier looks at MacTaggert nervously. He is immediately attracted to her, but is too shy to let on about any of it.

CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR

I'm sure you too will be great together!

FLASHBACK ENDS.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – MAIN HALLWAY - MORNING

MacTaggert smiles and continues walking.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – PROFESSOR X'S OFFICE - MORNING

Professor X is seated at his desk, speaking with DAVIS.

DAVIS

I've spoken to Detective Gill. He says he's never heard of the Genosha camp, and he can't find anyone who'll give him any info. When I get back, I'll k snooping around, see what I can dig up. I don't have to tell you that, if Gyrich's behind this, he's got his tracks covered. We'll never pin anything on him, not unless he wants us to. (Pauses.) How are the children?

PROFESSOR X

Very shaken up by what happened. They're still reluctant to go into detail, but they've clearly been subjected to intense physical and emotional strain. They may never be the same again.

Davis' head droops in shame and disgust.

DAVIS

Look, I swear to you, if I'd suspected for even a second-

PROFESSOR X

Yes, Bill, I know. This was not of your doing, that it was a directive given by those above your authority. Nevertheless, this does mean we need to be more cautious in the future. All of us. Even you.

DAVIS

I'll find out who gave the order to remove the children and-

There is a knock at the door.

PROFESSOR X

Come in.

The door opens and MacTaggert steps in. She smiles when she sees Professor X, but then she glances at Davis and looks down, slightly embarrassed.

MACTAGGERT

Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know you were in the middle of a meeting.

At the sight of MacTaggert, Professor X's demeanour lifts, both in emotion and in action. He seems to sit taller, prouder, when she's in the room.

PROFESSOR X

(Smiles.) You're always welcome to any meeting, Moira. How are you feeling?

MACTAGGERT

(Nods sheepishly.) I'm a wee bit tired, but otherwise alright. Charles, just so you know, I can't stay much longer. My lab needs me, and so do my clients. My flight leaves in a few hours. Did you wish to hear my results?

PROFESSOR X

Yes, of course. Actually, we've got a staff meeting shortly. Bring your findings then. We promise we won't keep you.

DAVIS

Don't worry about getting to the airport. I'll get you blues-and-twos all the way there.

MACTAGGERT

Thank you, Lieutenant.

MacTaggert smiles graciously at Davis, but then looks at Professor X, obviously wanting to talk to him in private. He looks back at her, worried. Davis looks at both of them and picks up the message instantly.

DAVIS

Alright Professor, I'm going to call my partner and see where he's at in our investigation. You'll come get me when the meeting starts?

PROFESSOR X

Of course.

DAVIS

Alright. I'll see you two soon. (Nods to Professor X, then turns to MacTaggert.) Mrs. MacTaggert.

MacTaggert smiles at him politely, but chuckles to herself as he leaves. Professor X looks at MacTaggert with sorrow.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – REAR GARDEN - NOON

The Rear Garden behind the Main Building is simple, by design. The walkway is a circular arrangement of cement blocks, with a matching bench in the center. Emerging from the middle of the circular bench is a large oak tree, encircled but not restricted by the bench. On all sides of the walkway are large flower plans and trees. The chirping of birds and the movement of other small animals can be distinctly heard in the background. The area is shaded, thanks to the low overhanging trees that encompass the area. Professor X and MacTaggert are slowly strolling through the Garden.

PROFESSOR X

I'm sorry for the…formality of your visit. These are definitely not the circumstances under which I would like to see you.

MACTAGGERT

(Chuckles.) And all this time, I thought this was just a pathetic excuse to get me over here.

PROFESSOR X

Well, there aren't many big holidays coming up any time soon, and my birthday's not for a while, so I had to come up with something. In all seriousness though, thank you. Your insight has been invaluable.

MACTAGGERT

(Rolls her eyes.) My insight hasn't found a lick of information that's any use.

PROFESSOR X

Nonsense. Just your being here, giving Hank a second set of eyes, has helped him focus. He's glad you came as well.

MACTAGGERT

Well, I'll take the samples back to Muir Island with me, run them through my machines, see if I can find anything else there.

PROFESSOR X

You know, it might be a good idea to see if we can link our computers. It would help boost efficiency next time we-

MacTaggert stops and turns to Professor X, leaning down to look him in the eye.

MACTAGGERT

(Smiles.) Charles, don't.

PROFESSOR X

(Smiles, looking confused.) Don't? Don't what?

MACTAGGERT

You know what. Look around you, Charles. The world – all your work – is coming apart around you. We both know it. You've got your hands full as it is. The last thing you need is me complicating things even more.

PROFESSOR X

You never complicated things, Moira. You make things simple, and easy for me.

MACTAGGERT

(Laughs gently.) Come on, Charles. We both know that's not true.

Professor X looks down, defeated.

MACTAGGERT

You know I love you, but we both know where this is headed. The longer I stay, the harder it'll be. It's better if I leave as soon as possible.

PROFESSOR X

You know, I waited for you in Paris. I waited…for hours. I waited until the restaurant closed.

MacTaggert looks down, ashamed.

MACTAGGERT

I know you did. And I'm sorry. Life just…started taking me in a different direction.

PROFESSOR X

And are you happy with the direction it's taking you?

MacTaggert abruptly stands up straight, moving instantly from sentimental nostalgia to formal business.

MACTAGGERT

Perhaps we should get on with that meeting. (Turns and walks away.)

Professor X watches her leave for a moment, and frowns.

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM – NOON

All of the active X-Men have arrived. Also present are MacTaggert and Davis.

PROFESSOR X

It's been a while since we've had a chance to all meet together. And I would just like to point out how wonderful it is to have Kevin and the girls back. It's been far too long. Hank, what's their medical condition?

Beast, still in his lab coat, sips his cup of coffee.

BEAST

Kevin, Jubilation, and Katherine suffered from extensive physical trauma during their time in Genosha, which also included severe dehydration, malnutrition, and after-effects of multiple instances of heat exhaustion and excessive duress. However, I am pleased to report that none of them show any signs of permanent physical disability. There is a more than unlikely chance, however, of scarring for their more serious injuries, especially Kevin.

ICEMAN

(Chuckles.) You're telling me the guy who can change his shape is the one worried about scarring? Can't he just, you know… (Waves at his face.)

Cyclops stares at Iceman, obviously annoyed by his comment.

BEAST

While it is, of course, true that Kevin can alter his form at will, but to hide his scars would require constant use of his powers. He may simply choose to leave them unconcealed. At any rate, it is reassuring to note that none of our people sustained any injuries that are either life-threatening or life-altering.

PROFESSOR X

That IS wonderful news, Hank. What about on a genetic level?

Professor X turns and looks at MacTaggert.

PROFESSOR X

Did you detect anything, Moira?

MACTAGGERT

(Shakes her head.) Nothing that I can find. There was no attempt made to alter their genes, and it looks like all the base-pairs are still in tact. If there WAS any attempt to either alter or duplicate their mutant genomes, I can't find it. From what I can tell, they were simply used as slave labour.

PROFESSOR X

What about Ms. Marvel? Have you made any progress with her condition?

MACTAGGERT

(Shakes her head.) Sadly no. I don't have much on that either. I'd need to personally examine the mutant who attacked her. Until I know the nature of her powers, I can't tell how to undo what they've done.

ANGEL

Can't you run some tests on me? I'm sure it was the same mutant that attacked me at the base.

MACTAGGERT

I appreciate your sacrifice, Warren, but I'm afraid not. It was much too late to run any useful scans on you. Any residual effects of your encounter with this mutant had dissipated long before I got here. No, I'd need to bring the mutant back to my lab for analysis. Once I have that information, I might be able to figure out what happened to her.

BEAST

Doctor MacTaggert and I discovered something rather unusual about Ms. Marvel during our investigation. (Nods to MacTaggert.)

MACTAGGERT

Yes, that's right Henry.

MacTaggert types something into her console, and the holographic projector activates. Everyone looks at the holographic projection in the center of the room. It displays the three samples Beast and MacTaggert examined in Beast's lab.

MACTAGGERT

These are some genetic samples we collected. The one on the right is that of a normal human; the one on the left that of mutants. Notice the differences in base-pair arrangements. The one in the center is a DNA sample from Ms. Marvel. You'll notice that the genetic anomalies common to all mutants, either natural or artificially developed, aren't present with her. Her genetic make-up is completely different to that of either a normal human or a mutant.

CYCLOPS

What are you saying, doctor? Is she an alien?

MACTAGGERT

No, not an alien. She's definitely human, or at least was at one point. But somewhere along the way, her genetic code was infused with the code of some other life form. And whatever life form that was, it was DEFINITELY not human. I've never seen it before in my life. She's some sort of human-alien hybrid. I must say, that will probably complicate my research.

STORM

Does Cerebro know what this alien is?

BEAST

I submitted our findings to Cerebro for analysis, but unfortunately no more insightful results were produced.

PROFESSOR X

Well keep at it. Bringing back Ms. Marvel will restore people's faith in their system of government, and in mutants. And, in the meantime, we'll work on healing those whom we can. Jean, Lorna, how are our patients feeling?

JEAN

(Shakes her head.) They put on an appearance of calm, but they've all been through very traumatic experiences. They were subjected to verbal and physical abuse on a daily basis. They witnessed extensive abuse of their fellow inmates regularly. Understandably, they're scared, angry, and resentful. They're mad at normal humans, specifically those who operated the camp. They also hate that same system of government, including the police force. They see Davis and his team as responsible for allowing this to happen in the first place.

Davis looks down in shame.

JEAN

They're also mad at us. They think this was our fault as well. Kitty's starting to realize that this wasn't our fault, or Lieutenant Davis'. Jubilee is a little more…she'll need more time.

PROFESSOR X

The girls have been through something that no person should ever have to go through. The scars inflicted upon them aren't physical, and can't be so easily hidden.

POLARIS

I'll stay with the girls, keep them company. I think it's best to get them back on their feet as soon as possible, but ease them back into the school. The trauma they experienced is going to require months of rehabilitation, and even then it'll only work with controlled reintegration.

PROFESSOR X

Agreed. We'll take it slow with them, give them a chance to get back to their normal lives at their own pace.

POLARIS

There's something I should point out. Jean's right about them. They're really angry, especially Jubilee.

INT. X-MEN BASE – MEDICAL BAY - MORNING

Jubilee lies in her bed, staring up at the ceiling, tears trickling down her face. However, she isn't crying. Rather, her lip trembles, not from sadness and fear, but from rage and hatred.

POLARIS (NARRATING)

She's mad at everyone and everything. And it's not hard to see why. So far, she's been used by a douche bag of a boyfriend, nearly killed on site by the cops, arrested, abducted, and locked in a hard labour camp for weeks. They were forced into immense physical and mental trauma on a daily basis, with no logical reason why.

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM – NOON

POLARIS

As far as Jubilee's concerned, she has every right to hate and distrust normal humans.

JEAN

There's something else. John never returned. He felt that he would be better off with Magneto, fighting a war against the humans.

INT. X-MEN BASE – MEDICAL BAY - MORNING

Shadowcat is looking at a picture in her hand, tears trickling down her face. The picture is of Shadowcat and Pyro. In the bed beside her, Jubilee turns her head to look at Shadowcat.

JEAN (NARRATING)

Jubilee's picked up on that. They both have. They're wondering whether John was right for joining the Brotherhood. Right now, Jubilee could go either way, and Kitty's not far behind either. They both have the anger and the motive.

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM – NOON

PROFESSOR X

Then we must convince her, convince them both, to give humanity another chance. This…Genosha camp is, in many ways, a godsend for mutants like Magneto. It's hard evidence of mutant oppression at the hands of humans. The appearance of the installation alone is enough to convince those in doubt that the government is moving to enslave and even eliminate mutants. And, if some of them manage to escape, the stories they'd tell would galvanize mutants all over the world into rising up. They would see it as a rallying cry to overthrow, and even wipe out, the evil human oppressors. Magneto and those who support him would be seen as heroes; the mutants who died in Genosha, martyrs.

STORM

Was Magneto able to retrieve any other mutants from the island?

PROFESSOR X

(Shakes his head.) Just the ones he came for. But he has pledged to return and liberate the other mutants in the camp. They will undoubtedly want to join his cause, if not for revenge, then simply to help liberate other mutants currently incarcerated by humans, guilty or not.

EMMA

When Magneto's ready, he'll launch an all-out offensive against the humans in the name of mutant liberation. The humans will see it as mutant terrorists trying to free other mutant terrorists. They'll fight back.

CYCLOPS

Which is exactly what Magneto wants. They'll retaliate, which will only make Magneto's case stronger. He'll fight back too.

DAVIS

And, before you know it, we'll have a full-blown civil war on our hands. We need to expose this place before Magneto has a chance to. If we can get the government to fess up about this operation, we might get it shut down before Magneto has a chance to smash it. It might be seen as a gesture of good faith by the government if it immediately shut Genosha down and released its prisoners. Magneto would have nothing to work with.

PROFESSOR X

(Nods.) I agree. I've scheduled a meeting with Congress this afternoon. I intend to bring to their attention every last detail. Hank, have you downloaded all the flight recorder files?

BEAST

Yes, Professor. I've collected all the images and information the Blackbird recorded while we were there, and put them into a single file. You can send it to whomever you wish with minimal effort.

PROFESSOR X

Thank you, Hank.

CYCLOPS

This isn't going to work. The government's never going to admit this place exists. We can't even get them to admit they have a secret base in New Jersey! They'll deny all of it; say it's a mutant conspiracy to topple the administration.

PROFESSOR X

Probably, Scott. But what's the alternative? If we simply wait for Magneto to attack, one of two things will happen. Either he and his co-conspirators will be killed, or the mutants will be liberated. Neither alternative is acceptable.

ICEMAN

And why is that, exactly? This Magneto guy has been a pain in our ass since day one. Someone wanna explain to me why we don't simply let them put a bullet in his head?

Professor X stares at Iceman with quiet contempt.

PROFESSOR X

We need Magneto alive, Bobby. If he dies, he becomes a martyr to his followers, and that makes him far more powerful than he already is. If the champion of mutant liberation is killed by the evil humans while simply trying to save innocent, oppressed mutants from a horrific fate, it will be more than enough to drive mutants – all mutants – to violence. Revenge will be their rallying cry then. No, we need to get the word out before Magneto has a chance to react.

ANGEL

I've already spoken with DA Hodge. I gave him the rundown of the place. He's looking into it.

EMMA

I've spoken with my contacts in the government as well. They said they would try to get me some answers.

PROFESSOR X

That's good. With any luck, we can get enough people to speak out, and maybe get some answers. (Turns to look at Cyclops.) How's Kevin? He was there much longer than anyone else. How does he feel about his experiences at Genosha?

CYCLOPS

The same way the girls do. At first, he was just amazed that such a place could even exist. He's been catching up on what's been going on here, especially with the Friends of Humanity.

INT. X-MEN BASE – MEDICAL BAY - MORNING

Morph is sitting up in his bed, staring at his laptop. On his screen is information on the Friends of Humanity.

CYCLOPS (NARRATING)

A part of him still can't believe that people can be so vicious and cruel against other human beings. Nor does he understand how groups like the Friends of Humanity can even exist, and why the government's allowing them. But living in that camp for weeks has proven to him that, not only are such places possible, but that we could all end up there if we're not careful.

Morph stares at the laptop with malicious contempt.

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM – NOON

PROFESSOR X

(Sighs.) We can't begin to imagine what he's been through, what any of them have been through. But we must move quickly to rehabilitate them. The longer hatred is left in their hearts, the more time it has to fester, to grow, and manifest itself in physical forms, like violence.

Professor X looks around at everyone else in the Room and smiles gently.

PROFESSOR X

We have a lot of work to do.

INT. X-MEN BASE – MAIN CORRIDOR – NOON

Polaris and Iceman exit the Ward Room by themselves. Iceman rubs the back of his head, fatigued by the meeting, and sighs loudly.

POLARIS

You okay, Bobby?

ICEMAN

Ugh…yeah I'm alright. That meeting was a real ray of friggin' sunshine, eh! And to think, I was ALMOST having a good day!

POLARIS

Yeah, well it's some serious stuff, Bobby. Between the MRA, these sentinel-things, and now Genosha, we're dealing with some pretty big problems right now. We need to stand up to people like Gyrich and Creed. If we don't do anything, they'll just keep coming at us.

ICEMAN

Okay yeah I get all that, but is it really necessary to commit our entire existence to this? The Professor's decided to devote his whole life to mutant liberation, but that's 'cause he's clearly crazy, and-

Polaris stops, turns to Iceman, and slaps him on his chest, hard enough to make him cough.

ICEMAN

Hey, what the hell! Did you not forget the whole me-getting-gutted-in-the-chest? Still tender, you know!

POLARIS

This isn't a joke, Bobby! This is serious shit going on! This isn't about your life, or mine! This is about all of us! Every single mutant is in danger right now! Our children, our families and friends, everyone. And the humans, too! This is about the future of the human race, Bobby! We need to stand up for ourselves! We need to stop sitting around, waiting for someone to hand us our rights and liberties! We need to start demanding our freedom, because if we don't, people like Creed and Gyrich will take it from us!

ICEMAN

(Smiles.) Wow, look at you! Fight the powers that be and all that. And hey, that's cool and all, but in the meantime can we grab a beer or something? I mean… (Chuckles.) …world's not gonna end tomorrow, Lorna. And hey, tell you what! If it does in fact end, I got the first round, alright?

POLARIS

(Groans, annoyed.) Will you quit fooling around and be serious for a minute? We're trying to make a difference here, and all you're doing is laughing!

ICEMAN

Look, Lorna, I get what the Professor's saying; I just don't think it's all that bad. These guys – Gyrich, Creed, Kelly – they're chumps. They're not gonna last. People will soon realize they're full of shit and stop listening. It's just a matter of time. Soon they'll be gone, and we can go back to spending our time finding empty rooms to play in.

Iceman starts to put his hands on her hips, but Polaris, disgusted, pulls away.

ICEMAN

(Sighs, annoyed.) Okay, guess we're still on this…

POLARIS

You know what, if that's what you think is gonna happen, if you think that sitting back and doing nothing is going to solve all our problems, and that everything's going to work out just fine, then you do that. Go play video games or something. The rest of us have other things to do. Call me when you grow up, Bobby.

Polaris turns and storms away from Iceman. Iceman throws up his hands in frustration.

ICEMAN

Lorna!

Polaris ignores Iceman and walks off.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – FRONT ENTRANCE - AFTERNOON

MacTaggert and Davis exit the Main Building. Davis is carrying MacTaggert's bags. Professor X, Beast, and Cyclops follow.

DAVIS

(Stops and turns to Professor X.) Well, this has certainly been a learning experience. We'll have to do it again sometime.

PROFESSOR X

(Smiles.) We'll try not to get into too much trouble next time you come visit.

DAVIS

No, I mean it. Anytime this happens again, anytime those sentinels come after you, or even if you're feeling the urge to take one or two of them down, let me know.

Davis' cell phone goes off. He pulls it out and looks at the text message.

PROFESSOR X

Bill, wouldn't that be breaking the law?

DAVIS

(Smiles.) I'm sorry; I didn't hear that. Was looking at my phone. (Reads the text message.)

Professor X smiles. Beast and Cyclops look at each other. Davis reads the text message and his jaw drops in despair.

PROFESSOR X

What is it?

DAVIS

Just got a text message from Gill. He says he's on his way up here, along with Gyrich, and about a dozen uniforms.

Professor X looks on with concern and contempt.

CYCLOPS

Hank, how's defence perimeter coming along? Are all the guns in place?

BEAST

Not as such, however the preliminary defensive systems are in place, and as well the holes for the turrets have been dug-

PROFESSOR X

No. This isn't a military base. We will deal with Gyrich face-to-face.

DAVIS

I'm sticking around. Don't worry; he won't get more than a peek at your front gate.

PROFESSOR X

No, Bill. This is a school, and as such it's open to public scrutiny. I imagine Gyrich's coming here to inspect our facilities. He's involved in the Department of Mutant Affairs, so it's within his interest. Besides, Moira has a flight to catch, and I don't want her to be late.

MACTAGGERT

No, forget it. I'm staying here till this is all cleared up.

PROFESSOR X

No, I don't want you here, either of you.

Davis and MacTaggert both look on, confused and mildly insulted.

PROFESSOR X

Bill, I don't want Gyrich to know you've had contact with us. If he sees you here, your objectivity, and even your integrity will be called into question. And I can't have you under suspicion for involvement at any level. Moira, the same thing goes for you. I don't want him coming after you. Whatever he wants with us, I don't want either of you involved. For both your safety and ours, we need to keep you both as far away from Gyrich as possible.

DAVIS

I understand. I'll see to it personally that Doctor MacTaggert gets on her plane.

PROFESSOR X

Thank you, Bill. Hank, please tend to our patients. Make sure they're well looked after – and confined to our "other infirmary."

BEAST

Of course, Professor. (Starts walking towards MacTaggert.) Thank you for your visit, Doctor. It is a rare and most welcomed pleasure to have someone of your intellectual calibre with whom I can converse about fundamental elemental…

MacTaggert laughs.

BEAST

(Smiles eagerly.) Have I said something amusing?

MACTAGGERT

Oh lordy, you are such a nerd, Hank! Do you know that? (Laughs hard.)

BEAST

(Blushes and smiles.) My propensity towards more ostentatious vocabulary was always something I considered one of my most attractive qualities.

MACTAGGERT

(Laughs.) It is, it truly is. Don't ever change it. (Kisses Beast on the forehead.)

MacTaggert kisses Beast on the forehead, causing him to blush playfully.

PROFESSOR X

Hank.

Beast, engulfed in the moment, suddenly comes back to reality.

BEAST

(Splutters for a moment.) If you'll excuse me.

MacTaggert, still grinning but doing her best to put on her grownup face, nods. Beast turns and leaves.

CYCLOPS

Professor, I don't like the idea of Gyrich snooping around here. He'll be stepping on private property. If he tries to arrest us, I'll shut him down.

PROFESSOR X

(Shakes his head.) No. He's not coming for that.

Professor X stares straight ahead, scanning Gyrich's mind.

PROFESSOR X

He thinks Kevin and the girls are here. He's coming to find them, and return them to Genosha.

INT. X-MEN BASE – MEDICAL BAY – AFTERNOON

Jubilee is sitting up in her bed, reading the latest issue of Cosmopolitan. Shadowcat is sitting up in her bed, reading her science textbook. Beast hurriedly walks in.

BEAST

Ladies, I'm afraid I must ask you to remain in here. We have reason to suspect that Gyrich is coming here, looking for you.

Both Jubilee and Shadowcat jump upright in their beds. Instantly, all the terror, all the fear, the hate, anger, resentment, and horror of Genosha, which the girls had spent every waking hour since their rescue trying to bury, suddenly floods back into their thoughts.

JUBILEE AND SHADOWCAT

(Terrified and panicked.) WHAT!

BEAST

Now now, ladies please remain calm. You are in the safest place we have. The Base is undetectable by any known means of surveillance, and it is not on any record anywhere. Gyrich will be free to search the school; he will not find you here. And if something should happen, we have several secure locations to which we can quickly and easily move you. Just remain calm and remain in your beds.

Shadowcat, now pulsing with terror, bounces frantically in her bed.

SHADOWCAT

(Terrified.) No, please! Don't leave us!

Shadowcat stares at Beast, desperately searching for reassurance.

SHADOWCAT

Please, don't leave us!

Beast is obviously nervous. He looks back behind him, as if looking for some support. Seeing none, he turns back and smiles at the girls.

BEAST

So, what shall we discuss? Science, algebra?

Shadowcat smiles and huffs, suddenly realizing that she has missed several weeks of school.

SHADOWCAT

Algebra, I remember that.

JUBILEE

I hear there's a new season of Game of Thrones coming up.

BEAST

Oh yes, I quite enjoy that show! It's a rather well-structured storyline with a masterfully multifaceted series of characters.

SHADOWCAT

I like the dragons. They're cool.

JUBILEE

I like the nudity. It's…it's nudity.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – FRONT ENTRANCE - AFTERNOON

Professor X and Cyclops nervously await the arrival of the police cars. Four police cars, led by a police SUV, calmly drive along the road towards the front entrance.

CYCLOPS

I could take out all of them from here, right now.

Professor X looks up anxiously at Cyclops for a moment, and then back at the approaching police cars. The cars come to a stop at the front entrance. Immediately, ten police officers emerge from their cars. Gyrich and GILL climb out of the SUV. Gyrich takes a moment to look at the school's Main Building before approaching Professor X. While he takes in the view of the school, Gill hurriedly walks up to Professor X.

GILL

You guys get my message?

PROFESSOR X

(Nods.) Davis relayed the message to us. Thank you.

GILL

Hey I tried to stall him as much as I could, but that just made him madder. Started waving his warrant in my face. Was a real dick about it, too. I don't know how he got one so fast.

PROFESSOR X

It's alright, Detective.

GILL

Where's Bill?

PROFESSOR X

He left here a few minutes ago. You just missed him.

Gill knows that there is more to it than that, but simply nods and continues. Meanwhile, Gyrich, carrying a briefcase, starts to approach. He walks with an air of matter-of-fact arrogance, as though he were clearly the most important person in the vicinity at any given time.

GILL

Well, anyway, he thinks you're holding fugitives here or something-

GYRICH

Now now, Mister Gill, no need to make this visit tense and unpleasant. This isn't an interrogation…yet. (Looks at Professor X and Cyclops.) I'm looking for Charles Xavier.

PROFESSOR X

I'm Professor Charles Xavier.

GYRICH

(Extends his hand.) Good afternoon, Professor Xavier. My name is Henry Gyrich.

Professor X reluctantly shakes Gyrich's hand.

GYRICH

I'm from the Department of Mutant Affairs.

PROFESSOR X

So I gathered.

GYRICH

But how- (Realizes that Professor X is a telepath, and smiles.) Ah, yes. Well, anyway, your school is quite impressive, and I'm sure you're doing mutants a tremendous favour by providing them a private education here.

PROFESSOR X

Mutant persecution and discrimination is on the rise as of late, Mister Gyrich. Many mutants are too afraid to go to school; my school provides a safe and nurturing environment for young minds who want nothing more than to learn and to grow.

GYRICH

(Smiles patronizingly.) Of course; I'm certain it's a budding foundation of knowledge and all that. But I imagine you must get more than your fair share of frightened young mutants on your doorstep. And I'd imagine this, um… (Looks up, as if expecting to see a sign above the door bearing the school's name) …School for Gifted Youngsters is seen as a safe haven for mutants, where they can get some sort of political asylum, free from the persecution of the law. A sanctuary to run to, to absolve themselves of any previous criminal behaviour.

PROFESSOR X

I can't pretend to know how mutants view my school. To me, it's a haven of knowledge and enlightenment, and a place where mutants don't have to live in fear. So far as I'm concerned, it serves no other purpose.

GYRICH

Well, unfortunately, there are several mutant fugitives on the loose, and I think they may have decided to come here. These mutants are dangerous criminals, Mister Xavier. They're threats not only to themselves, but to everyone around them. Hell, they're threats to this entire goddamn country.

PROFESSOR X

What makes you think they're here?

GYRICH

I think it would be better if we discussed this inside. (Starts to walk past Professor X towards the door.)

Cyclops, arms folded, steps right in front of Gyrich, blocking him from entering and staring him down.

GYRICH

Love the shades. Now move.

CYCLOPS

You're not coming in.

GYRICH

Really? (Sighs conspicuously, reaches into his briefcase and pulls out his warrant.) Funny, because this search warrant says I am. (Flaps the warrant in Cyclops' face.) I figured I'd get this kind of response from you people. (Glances at Professor X.) Look Xavier, we can do this the easy way, where I conduct a nice, friendly search of the premises, or we can do this the hard way, where these boys in blue behind me call for reinforcements and tear this place open room by room!

Cyclops leans in, teeth clenched, when he feels Professor X's hand on his arm.

PROFESSOR X

Scott.

Professor X, looking up at Cyclops, shakes his head. Reluctantly, Cyclops backs away and steps aside.

PROFESSOR X

Come inside, Mister Gyrich.

GYRICH

(Turns to the police officers.) Wait out here.

Gyrich walks past Cyclops, staring him down the entire time with a smug smile. Professor X, Gyrich, and Gill head inside, while Cyclops stands aside.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – PROFESSOR X'S OFFICE – AFTERNOON

The door to Professor X's Office opens and Cyclops steps inside. Professor X follows, along with Gyrich and Gill. Gyrich continues to examine everything he sees.

GYRICH

This is a lovely school, MisterXavier.

Professor X goes behind his desk.

GYRICH

Clearly, the students here are very privileged. I'm curious to find out what resources you have for them.

PROFESSOR X

Mister Summers will be happy to give you a full tour at your convenience.

Gyrich and Cyclops look at each other. Gyrich smiles arrogantly; Cyclops smiles sarcastically.

PROFESSOR X

However, I suspect that's not the real reason you've come here without prior notice.

GYRICH

Yes, you're right. As I said, I suspect that several mutant fugitives will try to reach here, that is, if they haven't made it here already.

Gyrich pulls out a file folder and puts it on the desk before Professor X.

GYRICH

And I suspect they'll be coming here because, well, this is where they live.

Professor X opens the file. On the front page is a profile printout about Morph.

GYRICH

Now, this guy's name is Kevin Sydney. He's a professor of, I think, engineering at this school.

Professor X looks up at Gyrich.

PROFESSOR X

Yes, he was a professor at my school. May I ask what your interest in him is?

GYRICH

I'm afraid that's classified, but he is considered to be very dangerous. Obviously, there's a high probability that he would return here at some point or other. You wouldn't happen to know where he might be, would you?

PROFESSOR X

Unfortunately no. In fact, we haven't seen him in several months. He…he disappeared mysteriously while in New York. We haven't been able to locate him since.

GYRICH

It's possible that he turned to a life of crime, and didn't want any of you to follow.

PROFESSOR X

I highly doubt that, Mister Gyrich. Mister Sydney was a model citizen and one of the finest people I've ever known. We think it's more likely he was abducted, possibly by renegade mutants, human terrorists, or possible rogue government agents. YOU haven't seen Kevin, have you?

GYRICH

(Smiles politely.) Unfortunately, any discussion about our investigation is also classified, but as of right now, he is AWOL, so to speak. Would you mind if I did a quick search of the premises?

PROFESSOR X

(Smiles.) If I said no, would it matter?

GYRICH

No. But it costs nothing to be polite.

PROFESSOR X

(Shrugs.) Mister Summers will escort you throughout the campus. He'll show you everything you want to see on school grounds.

GYRICH

If you don't mind, I'd prefer to show myself around.

PROFESSOR X

Please, I insist. This is still a school, Mister Gyrich. I won't have you disrupting my classes and the children's studies for your convenience. As I said, Mister Summers will give you complete access to any of the school's facilities, but there are limits. If you intend to search through any of the residencies, I will be forced to contact the children's parents. There are child privacy laws to consider.

GYRICH

I'm not concerned about the stuffed toys your kiddies collect. But don't think for a second they're off limits. I'm authorized to search every inch of your "school". Call whoever the hell you want.

PROFESSOR X

Of course, I must also inform my staff to expect your arrival.

GYRICH

(Growing impatient.) Sure. Whatever.

Gyrich turns and heads for the door. Cyclops looks to Professor X who, worried, nods to Cyclops. Cyclops sighs, annoyed, and turns to follow Gyrich. Professor X watches them leave.

INT. CREED'S HOUSE – KITCHEN – EVENING

Creed and his wife invited YAMAMOTO to their house for dinner. They are sitting around the Kitchen table. They have just finished dinner and are now digesting comfortably; their plates and glasses are still present.

CREED

…and then I realized that it wasn't her hip!

Both Creed and Yamamoto laugh hysterically.

MRS. CREED

(Laughing.) Can you believe that? And THAT was how we met! I should have known he was trouble from the day I met him!

YAMAMOTO

(Laughs.) Well, it was definitely a memorable first impression!

CREED

That it definitely was! (Looks at Mrs. Creed.) I'm lucky to still have her.

Mrs. Creed, smiling, leans in and kisses Creed.

YAMAMOTO

You both are lucky.

CREED

(Smiles playfully.) Oh, we know!

YAMAMOTO

No, I mean it.

Creed and Mrs. Creed look at Yamamoto.

YAMAMOTO

Love is the most powerful force there is. It compels us to go, when all around us says to stop. It gives us strength to push harder, when we cannot push anymore. For it, we will sacrifice all we possess. And you, both of you, the love you share is very powerful. You would do anything for each other, and that is a rare thing, especially in this day and age. Cherish it, cherish what you have, for most will never experience such passion.

CREED

Thank you, Akira. That was very…prolific. And what about you? Where's the love of your life? Every time I talk to you, you're down in the lab. I hope you come back up for air every now and then.

YAMAMOTO

(Smiles.) Yes, Mister Creed. I do have a love, but she is back in Japan. She waits for me, for me to bring her here. Once I am fully established in America, I will send for her. I want to be sure I am ready to take care of her.

MRS. CREED

Oh that's so sweet! You want to make sure you're financially stable before you bring her here. That's very sweet.

CREED

Well, I'm sure I can help you out. I'll ask around, and see what I can do. What do you need to be ready to receive her?

YAMAMOTO

(Blushes.) Oh no, Mister Creed. You have done more than enough already! The funding you have provided me to do your research is more than enough for me. And I assure you, it has been well used. We are conducting many tests on how the mutant gene responds to various forms of radiation, and even infection. And the infection results are very interesting-

Creed waves Yamamoto off.

CREED

Please, please. Let's not discuss work right now. I'm certain you're putting my money to excellent use. If I didn't, we wouldn't be here. Right now, the only important things here are you, us, and a few more bottles of wine!

Everyone laughs and Creed starts pouring out more wine.

INT. X-MEN BASE – MEDICAL BAY - EVENING

BEAST

Fascinating! (Smiles, perplexed.)

Shadowcat are sitting cross-legged on Jubilee's bed. Shadowcat looks on, unimpressed. Jubilee nods, smiling widely.

BEAST

(Blushes.) I must say, I'm absolutely perplexed. It would seem to defy the very laws of the universe itself.

SHADOWCAT

(Laughs.) Blows your mind, doesn't it?

BEAST

Indeed. I must say, it's an incredible phenomenon! So, please explain it again. Despite everything you've said to me, I cannot fully fathom the notion that Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryan are blood brothers, and the consequences of such a revelation!

SHADOWCAT

(Sighs.) Yup. Kinda start wondering if the universe is gonna collapse eh? J doesn't believe any of it.

BEAST

Curious. (Smiles.)

Jubilee shrugs and flops back on the bed.

JUBILEE

Whatever. You both suck. When can we go upstairs? I'm bored.

BEAST

Professor Xavier will contact us when any potential dangers have been nullified. But perhaps I shall go and check on Mister Sydney, and see how he is fairing. (Gets up and leaves the room.)

Jubilee, panting in fear, watches as Beast leaves.

JUBILEE

Swear to God, if Gyrich comes down here, I'm gonna kill him myself.

SHADOWCAT

(Terrified.) If he finds us, he'll bring others! They'll come for us! They're going to take us away again!

Shadowcat's fear is overwhelming. Jubilee's fear, however, is silenced by her anger.

JUBILEE

He won't get the chance!

Meanwhile, Beast walks into Morph's room.

BEAST

Kevin?

Morph's bed is rustled, but empty. Beast looks around, but Morph is nowhere to be found.

INT. X-MEN BASE – WARD ROOM – EVENING

Morph is sitting at one of the wall consoles. He is staring intently at the monitor. On the monitor is one of Cerebro's files: Creed, Graydon. There is a picture, as well as known living addresses, contact information, and personal biography. Morph sits back, snarling in resentment. His eyes move back and forth as he thinks.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – MAIN HALLWAY - EVENING

Leaning on the second floor railing, Angel stares contemptuously at Gyrich as he walks by, accompanied by Cyclops and followed by Gill. After they pass, he turns and walks down the hall.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING - STORM'S BALCONY – EVENING

Storm is hovering on her balcony, eyes closed, meditating. She bobs up and down, floating two feet off the ground. There is a knock at her door.

STORM

Enter.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – STORM'S BEDROOM - EVENING

Slowly, Angel steps inside. He notices Storm on her balcony and is embarrassed.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING - STORM'S BALCONY – EVENING

Storm hovers above the ground, her legs stretched out in a streamline form, arms stretched out from her sides. The wind holding her up tosses and spins her hair above her head. Her clothes also flap in the wind.

ANGEL

I'm sorry, Ororo. Didn't know you were busy; I'll come back later.

STORM

It's alright, Warren. Please come in.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – STORM'S BEDROOM - EVENING

ANGEL

Yeah, but I'm disturbing you.

Storm lowers herself to the ground, and turns to face Angel.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING - STORM'S BALCONY – EVENING

STORM

(Smiles.) Your presence is never a disturbance.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – STORM'S BEDROOM - EVENING

STORM

What troubles you?

Angel walks towards Storm.

ANGEL

You see what's going on downstairs? I hear that's none other than Henry Gyrich. And I hear he came with a warrant. He's convinced Kevin and the girls are here.

STORM

Kevin and the girls have been instructed to remain downstairs until the police have left. Gyrich has no knowledge of our facilities beneath the school. They are quite safe.

ANGEL

(Shakes his head.) I'd like to give him a bird's-eye view of the mansion, then drop him from a high place.

STORM

(Smiles.) Do not worry, Warren. His inspection is almost over. There is no doubt that Scott is making his tour as quick and brief as possible.

ANGEL

Yeah but that's not the point. He shouldn't even be here!

STORM

Unfortunately, as you stated, he has a warrant. That gives him the right to search our premises. We both know that Professor Xavier would not allow him in here otherwise.

ANGEL

Warrant, my ass! That son of a bitch should be behind bars! HE'S the man behind Genosha and the sentinels!

STORM

We have no proof of that, Warren.

WARREN

(Growing agitated.) Why are you defending him!

STORM

I'm not. I am simply pointing out that we have no tangible evidence that he is connected to Genosha. And as for the sentinels, by the time we even knew of their existence, their operation had already received government approval.

Angel starts pacing back and forth. Storm gently places herself on the ground, gets up, and turns to face Angel.

STORM

Like it or not, he has the law on his side. Right now, we share a mutual non-aggression arrangement. We cannot prove that he is responsible for Genosha without exposing ourselves, and he cannot prove that we attacked his installations with exposing himself. It is this arrangement which has kept us safe. If we move against him, the government and the police will come after us, and rightly so.

Angel sits down on a chair against the wall and rubs his face in frustration. After several moments, he raises his head and stares at the wall.

ANGEL

Ororo, you ever… (Pauses.) …you ever wish you weren't…you know?

STORM

A mutant? (Starts walking towards Angel.) I did.

Angel looks up at Storm as she leans against her desk beside him.

STORM

When I first developed my powers, I was revered as a goddess in my homeland. But, when I came to America, I was despised. There was a time where I felt there was something wrong with me, as though I had a terminal disease or was defective in some way. I began to hate my powers, to see them as a curse, and to hate myself as a result. But when I met Professor Xavier, he taught me to not fear or hate my powers, but to rather understand that they are a part of me, another limb, not unnatural or defective, but an enhancement. To loathe them is to loathe myself, and I did not like that. I was raised to love myself, and all around me. Do not deny who you are, Warren. What makes you different is truly…angelic. (Smiles.)

Angel smiles and shakes his head.

ANGEL

God Ororo, I don't know how you do it. You seem to have everything under control all the time. I think I'm the exact opposite. I look at people like Gyrich, and I want to pop their heads like grapes. But then, I look at other people who aren't so much resentful of mutants, but who just passively fear them. I look into the eyes of people – of children – who have been raised to think we're freaks, who've seen mutants like Magneto on television, terrorizing innocent people. They're frightened of me, frightened of an angel! And that's…that's no way to live. (Pauses, smiling.) I was once a dashing young man, you know. I didn't always look like this.

STORM

I know. I've seen pictures from your youth. (Smiles.) STILL a dashing young man.

ANGEL

(Smiles, then shakes his head.) I used to have girls fainting at the sight of me. They would literally line up to go out with me. It was great! And then… (Points to his wings.) …this. Now, things are different. Women don't line up for me anymore. Why would they? Who the hell would want a half-man, half-bird freak? Who'd want to be seen with a human griffin? I remember the first girl I tried to date after my wings grew in. She picked me up and we went to the beach. She told me not to lean against her car; she was afraid I'd shit on it and ruin her car wash. (Shakes his head.) SHE thought it was hilarious; I was done. Maybe I overreacted. I don't know. I was still…I had so much anger, disgust.

Storm frowns.

ANGEL

Now, I don't bother going after anything serious. What girl would want to? Sometimes, I wish… (Pauses.) I wish I could go back to how I was. I don't know how you have that control over your emotions; I wish I had it.

STORM

It's not easy, Warren. It never is. I feel your pain, the need to remain concealed. Like you, I must withdraw myself, bury my feelings deep within me. If I cannot control them, people could die. So yes, I am in control of my passions, but only because I have to, and have always had to. (Walks towards Angel and puts her hand on his shoulder.) You cannot look at yourself as less than human, or an abomination. Your mutant abilities make you unique, make you special, something to be cherished, not feared. It is true that some people might be put off by your wings, but others would find them quite appealing. It is simply a matter of finding the right match.

ANGEL

Hey you think there's a dating website for mutants? I figure, they got dating websites for Star Trek fans, where they even dress up and everything! Why the hell wouldn't they have one for mutants? We're just as freaky as they are; we deserve our own site!

STORM

(Chuckles.) I'm certain there is. You should look into it. It might be enough to cheer you up.

ANGEL

(Nods.) Yeah, I'll take a look around. (Huffs.) Ororo, do me a favour? Lie to me and tell me everything's gonna be okay?

STORM

(Leans down and kisses Angel's forehead.) It is not a lie. Things WILL be okay. They are difficult now, and will continue to be difficult for some time, but they WILL improve in time. Heed my words.

ANGEL

(Nods reluctantly.) Hey do me one more favour…another favour Just keep this between the two of us, okay? Don't really want this to become to trending topic around the office.

STORM

(Nods.) Nothing spoken here will leave this room.

Angel stands up and stares at Storm, smiling.

ANGEL

Thanks, Ororo. (Leans in to hug Storm.) What would I do without you?

Storm hugs Angel back, holding him close.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – MAIN HALLWAY - EVENING

Gyrich and Cyclops walk slowly to the Front Door. Gill walks behind them, clearly annoyed and impatient.

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – PROFESSOR X'S OFFICE – EVENING

Professor X is on the phone, but stares out the door and into the hallway.

DAVIS (ON THE PHONE)

Are they still there?

PROFESSOR X

Yeah. Mister Gyrich has spent the last several hours examining every building on campus, minus the dorms. I'm certain he'll want to return with a warrant granting him access there as well.

DAVIS (ON THE PHONE)

Guess he wants to be thorough. You know this won't be the end of it. He'll come back later, with a more thorough search team.

PROFESSOR X

Yes, I suspect he will. But we'll be ready for him. Did Moira get off alright?

DAVIS (ON THE PHONE)

Yeah, got her to LaGuardia with plenty of time. She said she'll call when she's back on Muir Island.

PROFESSOR X

Thank you, Bill…for everything.

DAVIS (ON THE PHONE)

It's the least I could do, considering. How's Ed's babysitting going?

Gyrich and Cyclops walk by. Gill follows, but stops to look inside Professor X's office. When he sees Professor X looking at him, he makes his hand in the shape of a pistol, puts it to his head, and simulates shooting himself.

PROFESSOR X

He's…coping.

DAVIS (ON THE PHONE)

He probably wants to shoot himself in the head. Do me a favour; tell him to give me a call when he's done there.

PROFESSOR X

I think they're just finishing up now. I'm going to see them out. I'll let him know.

DAVIS (ON THE PHONE)

Thanks, Professor. I'll talk to you later.

PROFESSOR X

Take care, Bill. (Hangs up.)

INT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – MAIN HALLWAY - EVENING

Professor X heads into the Main Hallway to meet with the others.

PROFESSOR X

Well, Mister Gyrich, I trust that you're satisfied that the people you're looking for aren't here.

GYRICH

Not even slightly. If anything, I'm even more convinced now that Kevin Sydney is headed here, if he hasn't come here already.

Gyrich leans forward onto Professor X's hover chair.

GYRICH

Listen to me very carefully, Xavier. Harbouring a fugitive is a criminal act, punishable by several years in a maximum security prison! And, rest assured, if I find out you're hiding them here, I'll see to it you and your…"staff" spend the rest of your natural lives behind bars.

Cyclops grabs Gyrich by the arm and forcefully hauls him off of Professor X's chair. Snarling, he spins around to face Cyclops.

GYRICH

Did you just put your hand on me, Summers?

Cyclops steps forward, teeth clenched.

PROFESSOR X

Scott.

Cyclops stops reluctantly, glances at Professor X, and then backs away.

CYCLOPS

You can't lean on his hover chair like that. It damages the stabilizers.

Gyrich says nothing, but stares at Cyclops for a few moments, then slowly turns back to face Professor X.

GYRICH

You've past THIS inspection, Charles Xavier, but I'm hardly convinced. Even if Sydney's not here, this place is filled with unregistered mutants. And that deadline's coming up. And when that deadline's come and gone, I'll be back, with a SWAT team, to haul away every last mutant that's not registered! Watch yourself! (Points to Cyclops.) Starting with him!

Professor X grits his teeth as he stares at Gyrich.

PROFESSOR X

Mister Summers, please show our guest out.

CYCLOPS

Right away, Professor.

Gyrich, still staring down at Professor X, exits the Main Building, accompanied by Cyclops. Gill walks towards Professor X.

GILL

Really sorry about that. That whole search was bullshit. He barely lifted a chair the whole day.

PROFESSOR X

(Smiles.) I assumed the search would go something like that. His warrant only permits an inspection of the premises, unless there is probably grounds for suspicion. The important thing is that we let him conduct his search, which will satisfy him for now.

GILL

He said he'd be back later, with a SWAT team.

PROFESSOR X

Of that, I have no doubt. I never suspected for a moment that he would be completely satisfied with this search. He was just having a look around. We'll be ready for him when he returns. Oh, Bill wants you to call him when you're free.

GILL

Yeah, great. Betcha he's jealous he didn't have to follow that piece'a work around all day.

PROFESSOR X

(Smiles.) Probably. Thank you though, for your patience.

GILL

(Shakes his head.) I swear to God, if I have to do this again, I'll shoot him myself. (Smiles.) Take it easy, Professor.

Professor X nods and Gill leaves.

EXT. XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS – MAIN BUILDING – FRONT ENTRANCE - EVENING

Professor X slowly exits the building and stops at the top of the stairs.

PROFESSOR X (NARRATING)

In the end, nothing else will matter: not your friends, not your family, your loved ones, or even you. The simple pleasures will slowly fade away.

Cyclops stands off to the side as Gyrich and the other police officers get back into their cars. Gill climbs into the SUV and turns it on.

PROFESSOR X (NARRATING)

You spend so much time immersed deep within your own hatred and malice that those things, those people which brought you joy before in your life seem meaningless now.

The police cars, led by the SUV, drive away.

PROFESSOR X (NARRATING)

Pain is all you know after that. It's all you have left. You live for it, breathe it, feed from it. It has become you. And, if you let it, it will become the only thing left of you.

Professor X heaves a sigh of trepid, worried relief.

INT. CREED'S HOUSE – HALLWAY – EVENING

Creed and Yamamoto are all smiles as they head to the door. Creed pats Yamamoto on the back as he puts on his shoes.

PROFESSOR X (NARRATING)

You can never rest, so long as your target remains. It eats away at you, piece by piece. You pursue it, until you reach an impasse. There is a line to cross, the only way to satisfy your demons. But if you do, there is no return. You can never go back to what you once were; it will forever be with you. To cross that line, completing your journey into the heart of darkness, or to step back from it, and return to your life. Most people who are consumed by revenge choose to step over that line. And only after they do, do they realize the mistake they've made.

Creed smiles as he shakes Yamamoto's hand. Yamamoto shakes Creed's hand, and bows respectfully.

PROFESSOR X (NARRATING)

Only then do they realize that they have already passed the point of no return. Now they are committed, entirely. And they'll have to live with the consequences of their actions. And even if they manage to avoid social and legal persecution for what they've done, they must come to the realization that who they were before, what they had, and all that they were in this world is gone, never to be reclaimed. Now, they're only a shell of a person, a person who not only destroyed, or at least sought to destroy, the target of their hatred, but also, in the process, themselves. It's at this time that they realize…

EXT. CREED'S HOUSE – FRONT DOOR – EVENING

Creed opens the door, and Yamamoto starts to step out. As they do, they both look forward at the person standing on the porch. The MAN stares at Yamamoto and Creed. Without a word, he raises a gun.

The Man fires.

The bullet cuts through Yamamoto is in the forehead above the left eyebrow. He falls backwards instantly. Creed, horrified, stumbles backwards behind the door.

INT. CREED'S HOUSE – HALLWAY – EVENING

Creed cowers behind the door, staring at Yamamoto's body. Blood pours from the back of Yamamoto's head, pooling on the floor and filling in any grooves and cracks it finds.

CREED

(Screaming.) JESUS CHRIST!

Blood trickles from the entry wound in Yamamoto's forehead. His eyes stare up at the sky, lifeless.

CREED

(Horrified.) Oh my God! Oh my God!

Mrs. Creed runs into the Hallway from the Kitchen.

MRS. CREED

(Screaming.) GRAYDON! GRAYDON!

CREED

(Screaming and waving.) GET OUT OF HERE, NOW! GET OUT OF HERE!

The Man slowly steps into the house, his gun still smoking. He turns slowly to look down at Creed.

CREED

(Trembling, terrified.) Whatever you want, please, don't hurt my family. I'll give you anything you want! I'll give you whatever I have. Whatever you want, just take it. Just please don't hurt them!

MAN

You think I want to rob you? You think I'm here to take your possessions? You sicken me. You sit here in your expensive middle America upper class home, enjoying the fact that you've got a multi-million dollar mansion to run away to whenever you're bored. Your wife and two point four children at your side. Your slick, greasy smile and easy-grip handshake. And all the while, you condemn mutants to die, to suffer at the hands of your pathetic followers! You treat them like SHIT! You think you're better than everyone else, better than the rest of us!

Creed, petrified, stares up at the Man.

MAN

Let me tell you something, Mister. Graydon. Creed. Mutants around the world won't take the steaming, festering pile of HORSESHIT that you and your racist hillbilly followers spit from your disease-infested mouths forever! Soon enough, we'll be coming for you! You think you're shittin' yourself now? Keep doing what you're doing, and I promise you…

The Man changes his shape into that of Morph. His wounds are absent; and he is enraged.

MORPH

…shitting your pants will be the LAST thing you'll have to worry about!

Creed, his lip trembling, stares in horror as Morph cocks the gun and presses it into Creed's nose.

CREED

(Stuttering.) Please…p-please don't…please…

MORPH

Listen to me very carefully, Mister Creed. We'll be watching. Don't. Fuck. With us!

As Creed pleads for his life, Morph winds up and crack Creed over the head with his gun. Creed falls over, unconscious. Morph stares at him for a moment, then turns and walks out the door.

Mrs. Creed, who was hiding behind the door frame the whole time, watches Morph leave, tears rolling down her cheeks.

EXT. CREED'S HOUSE – EVENING

As soon as Morph is off the porch, Mrs. Creed runs to Creed's side. As Morph walks out the door, he changes his shape into that of a common woman, and smiles maliciously.

PROFESSOR X (NARRATING)

…there is no turning back. You can never go home again.

BLACK OUT.

END CREDITS.
