Author's note:

This story is written as part of a challenge between my self and a freind. Another friend came up with the following prompt for us:

Main character finds a blank diary; takes it home with them and begins to use it only to discover that someone responds to each entry they write; the person on the other side? Sirius after falling through the veil.

This will be a short story, likely 3-5 chapters and most will be longer than this on. On that note, King Arthur AWAY!

Chapter One

The Book

Veil Observations

Day 3912

I'm honestly not sure why I keep writing in this, I haven't found anything new in three years. Hermione says it's good to keep notes of what I try in case someone else needs to replicate my research. Hah it's tough to call something research when it turns up jack squat after ten years.

I do plan on trying something new though so I guess it's worth writing. Today I will send my patronus through the veil. Up to now I've been told it's too risky and avoided it but I'm honestly out of ideas. If it takes my soul along for the ride or something crazy like that I guess I owe the Department of Mysteries an apology for not listening. Goodness knows why they still put up with me.

"Might as well get on with it" Harry muttered, getting up from his small work space in the bowels of the Ministry. As he walked towards the door to the Veil Room he thought back on all the previous attempts he'd made to bring his godfather back. Summoning charms. Rituals. Many an attempt to outright break the veil. Most seemed pretty silly at this point.

Getting closer to the veil he found himself wondering, not for the first time, just why he was so obsessed with this. He didn't spend a decade trying to get his parents back, why do so for Sirius? Perhaps it was the lack of a grave, or even a body really that let him cling to a shred of hope. Or maybe it was the guilt. After all it was his fault Sirius had died, no-matter what anybody tried to tell him.

Stopping in front of the stairs leading up to the veil Harry drew his wand, pointed it at the veil and cast "Expecto patronum". He enjoyed the soft warmth he could feel from the now grim shaped patronus for a few moments before telling it to "Head in there and try to find Sirius". With a silent bark the grim bounded through the air into the silent archway.

As the silvery form made contact with the fabric of the veil it disappeared with a flash of light bright enough to leave Harry temporarily blinded and a light thumping sound. After a minute when his vision had cleared he was disappointed to see that nothing else had happened.

As he turned to leave the room however something caught his eye a small black book stood out against the bare stone the room was hewn from. Stooping to see the cover without touching it (you never could be too careful in the Department of Mysteries) what he saw embossed on the cover shocked him.
