Author Note: A longish one-shot that answers the question, where were Jamie's and Eddie's friends at their wedding? And also gives us a look at the Wedding they Wanted.
"Run, Reagan!"
At his new wife's order, and with the announcement of final boarding for their flight to the Bahamas echoing in his head, Jamie handed his rolling suitcase over to Eddie and put on an additional burst of speed, just as he had so many times during his career as a NYPD patrol officer. He arrived at the gate and slapped Eddie's and his boarding passes into the flight attendant's hands just as she was reaching for the jetway door. "We're here."
The flight attendant glanced down at the passes. "Mr. Reagan. Cutting it close, are we?"
"The archbishop… the reception… traffic," Jamie gasped out, realizing he probably wasn't making a whole lot of sense. And that it had been far too long since he'd been involved in a foot pursuit.
"And this must be Mrs. Reagan?" the flight attendant added as Eddie joined her husband at the gate.
"Janko-Reagan," Eddie corrected, even though she wasn't sure right now what name she was going to use. She felt Jamie's arm wrap around her back, and wrapped her own arm around his. "And what he means is that the archbishop pontificated too long at the ceremony, and the toasts at the reception went on longer than we wanted, and traffic was bad."
"Newlyweds?" the flight attendant asked. At Eddie's nod, she added, "Congratulations. You're in 15B and 15C; just past the first class bulkhead on the right." She took their suitcases. "I'll get these checked. The overhead bins are full."
"Thanks." Eddie took the stubs of their boarding passes back from the flight attendant.
A few hectic minutes later, they were settled in their seats, the plane was racing down the runway (always the most worrisome part of any flight, in Eddie's opinion), and then they were in the air and on their way to their honeymoon. Jamie reached over, took Eddie's hand and interlaced their fingers. "So, you're going with Mrs. Janko-Reagan?"
Eddie leaned her head onto Jamie's shoulder. "It just came out. I'm still deciding, Mr. Reagan. What matters now is that we're married. Officially, formally married."
"Extremely formally married," Jamie added. "What happened to our simple marriage at St. Agnus, with the parish priest and a few family and friends?"
"My mother happened. Your grandfather happened. The two of them together happened."
"That's right. Those two are dangerous together."
"My mother's big ideas and your grandfather's connections to make them happen," Eddie commented.
"And my grandfather's big ideas and your mother's connections," Jamie added. "Who knew morning suits were even a thing?"
"Your grandfather, apparently. But, you did look like the perfect Victorian gentleman in that thing."
"I clean up good," Jamie joked. "And you looked smoking hot in that dress. Smokin'."
"Jamie! You can't say that about how I looked at a church wedding. And at Saint Patrick's Cathedral, too!"
"Another thing we can thank Grandpop and his connections for."
"And Mom also. Once she heard that St. Patrick's and the archbishop was a possibility, nothing else would do. And it just snowballed from there, didn't it?" Eddie concluded.
"Once it moved to St. Pat's, it became the NYPD social event of the year, and we were just along for the ride." Jamie shook his head as an idea formed. "You know what we did? We let wedding planning revert us to our former bad ways."
"What bad ways?" Edie huffed in pretend indignation.
"You know. You avoiding conflict with your mother by giving in to whatever she wanted, and me trying to make everyone happy. People-pleasing. Instead of standing up for what we wanted."
"Maybe," Eddie acquiesced. "But it was a really nice wedding…"
"For Jameson Henry Reagan and Edit Marie Janko, not for us. Jamie and Eddie"
"… and like you said, what's important is that we're married." Eddie concluded as if Jamie hadn't interrupted her.
"We are married," Jamie conceded. "And now we're stuck on this plane for hours, and…" Jamie leaned in closer. "I can't do any of the things with you that I want to for at least that long," he whispered.
Eddie giggled and pushed Jamie away. "You put a pin in that for a few hours, and then you'll have me all to yourself, Mr. Reagan. At least until tomorrow morning."
"Um-hmm," Jamie muttered. "I wonder how long we have to stay at Spencer's wedding."
"For the whole thing, silly." Eddie playfully punched her new husband in the arm. "You're his best man, remember? That why we're going to the Bahamas for our honeymoon instead of somewhere else."
"Oh, is that why we're doing that," Jamie teased back. The fact that his closest friend, Spencer Croft, wasn't able to attend his wedding had been Jamie's biggest – really, only – disappointment, once he realized they'd lost control of the wedding planning. Spencer and he had promised to be in each other's weddings, back when they were both single guys in law school, and those wedding were merely theoretical.
But Spencer's absence couldn't be helped; Spencer had proposed to his girlfriend Margie at about the same time Jamie had proposed to Eddie, and Spencer and Margie scheduled their wedding for the day after the date Jamie and Eddie had settled on for their wedding. Neither couple had noticed the conflict until it was too late to change their plans. By the time Jamie and Eddie announced their wedding date, all of Spencer's and Margie's families and friends already had plane tickets and reservations lined up for their wedding in the Bahamas, where Spencer was working in finance and Margie in resort management.
With his own wedding preparations in high gear, there was no way for Spencer to get away and attend Jamie's New York wedding, but, Spencer pointed out, Jamie could attend Spencer's Bahamas wedding. Just postpone your honeymoon by one day, Spencer had argued, and on that subject, Margie can get you a good price from her resort on a honeymoon cottage right on the water. I'll make you my honorary best man; all the fun and none of the work, he continued when Jamie hesitated. And now, several months later, here he and Eddie were, on a plane heading toward Spencer's wedding and their own honeymoon.
Beside Jamie, Eddie snuggled up against her new husband with a happy sigh. "Better rest up, lambchop. We're only a few hours from the hotel. And…" Eddie paused to stroke the side of Jamie's leg. "I don't think we'll get much sleep once we get there."
Jamie took his wife's hand in his and interlaced their fingers. Because if she kept that up, he wasn't going to make it to the hotel. "Probably not." He leaned over to kiss the top of Eddie's head. "Good night."

Meanwhile, back in New York, the Reagan family homes in Bay Ridge and Staten Island were hives of activity as Frank and Henry, and Danny and his sons quickly packed a few changes of clothes, swimsuits, and a few other essentials in their travel bags and gathered their passports for their own early-morning flight. Spencer had a little surprise planned for his best man, and it involved as many Reagan family members as possible coming to the island.

The next morning…
Beep-beep-beep. Beep-beep-beep.
"Ugh, is it time to get up already?" Eddie whined as Jamie grabbed his phone to silence the alarm.
"Yep." Jamie flopped back onto the bed next to his new wife. "In five minutes."
"You used the snooze alarm?" Eddie marveled at her husband's unusual behavior. "What, you didn't get enough sleep last night?"
"Maybe if someone had tried not looking so hot, I would've slept more," Jamie teased.
"Maybe if you'd let me unpack and put on my pajamas, I wouldn't have looked so hot."
"Wasn't any point in unpacking, since we're moving to that honeymoon villa Margie arranged for us tonight," Jamie argued as he played with a strand of his wife's hair. "Or putting on the pj's. I would've just taken then right off."
"Which would've been fun," Eddie argued back.
"Um-hum. We'll find out tonight." Jamie rolled over to kiss his wife.
Eddie returned the kiss briefly, then pushed Jamie onto his back. "Tonight. But right now, we've got a wedding to get ready for." She rolled out of bed before Jamie could stop her. "Dibs on the shower."
An hour later, while Eddie was finishing up her make-up and Jamie was finalizing his groomsman 'uniform' of a polo shirt and khakis that Spencer had had delivered to their room the day before, a knocking sounded at the hotel room door.
"Babe, can you get that?" Eddie called to her husband.
Jamie took one last look in the mirror. "Of course, Wifey." He checked the peephole, then swung the door open. "Spence!"
"Jaimer!" Spencer Croft pulled his friend into a quick hug. "How's it going?"
"Great. Great," Jamie replied as he tried to come up with some response that didn't reference his and Eddie's activities for the past six hours. "You ready for today?"
"Of course I am. But Margie…" Spencer suddenly realized he'd overlooked something. "Margie Banks, meet Jamie Reagan, my law school buddie. Jamie, Margie Banks, my fiancée."
Jamie reached out to shake the hand of the petite brunette standing next to Spencer. "Margie, nice to meet the lady who finally stole Spence's heart."
"Good to finally meet you. Spencer says so many good things about you," Margie replied.
"Anyway, Margie has a little bit of a dilemma. We'd only planned to have one attendant each, but now I have two – Robert and you, Mr. Honorary Best Man – so Margie has a question for Eddie."
"Okay," Jamie said. He had a feeling he knew what that question was. "Eddie?"
Eddie hopped toward the door as she pulled on the beach-appropriate flat sandals she'd bought for the wedding. "Hi, Spencer, and Margie? I'm Eddie."
"See, Margie, Eddie is just about Allison's normal size," Spencer commented.
"Spence, don't give it away," Margie whispered to her fiancé. "Eddie, what I wanted to ask you is if you would be my second bridesmaid?"
"Your bridesmaid? Wouldn't your sister or a relative want the spot? I wouldn't want to put them out." Eddie protested.
"I don't have a sister; just a brother who's Spencer's other groomsman. So I'd like to have someone from his side as my other attendant. Please, Eddie, I'd really appreciate it if you'd do it."
"But I don't have a bridesmaid's dress."
"Well, we do," Spencer held out a garment bag to her.
"Allison, my cousin, is my matron of honor. She found out she was pregnant a few months ago. So I bought the dress in two sizes, in case she was showing more than she expected by now. And she is."
"Twins," Spencer informed his friends.
"And like Spencer says, you look to be the size as pre-pregnancy Allison. Please, Eddie."
"If you sure," Eddie acquiesced. "I'll help out."
"Great! Margie, I'm sure you two have some dressing up to do, and Jaime and I have some best-man things to do also." He leaned in to kiss his fiancée. "See you soon, Miss Banks. Jamie, come with me."
Jamie kissed his wife briefly before Spencer pulled him off down the hall. "Love you, Ed!"

And so, a few hours later, less than twenty-four hours after his own wedding, Jamie Reagan found himself walking down the aisle formed by two rows of white chairs toward a wedding canopy set up on the beach, with another woman – Margie's cousin Allison – on his arm, and his wife of a day following behind him with Spencer's other groomsman. As the other attendants and he took their places under the canopy with Spencer, Jamie glanced at his new bride again. She was a vision in a pink dress – but not pink; coral, Spencer had told him – her hair in an elegant up-do with a spray of flowers tucked in it. Apparently, he was glancing at Eddie too much, because she was catching his eyes, then tilting her head down the aisle Margie was now walking down.
Jamie pulled his attention away from his new bride. Focus, man. Just a few more minutes. Pay attention to Margie and Spencer, he told himself. That resolve lasted until Margie joined Spencer at the altar and the Episcopal priest began the ceremony, and then Jamie found his eyes and his attention wandering right back to Eddie. Finally, the priest finished the wedding with a 'you may now kiss the bride' to Spencer. Which Spencer promptly did, to the applause and cheers of his and Margie's friends.
When Spencer and Margie finally ended their first kiss as Mr. and Mrs., the priest presented them to the assembled friends and relatives, and the newlyweds headed down the aisle, followed by Jamie, Eddie and the other two attendants.
Then, unexpectedly, Spencer paused at the end of the aisle and turned to the gathered family and friends. "Everyone, there's one thing we need to do before we party," Spencer called out to his and Margie's guests. "Many of you on my side may recognize my best man, Jamie Reagan, our law school buddy and resident NYPD cop." Spencer reached out and grabbed Jamie's shoulder. "He just got married himself, yesterday. In fact, his lovely wife is right here with him. Eddie?"
Eddie waved to the crowd. "Hi."
Several call of congratulations and applause drifted out of Spencer's side of the audience.
"Back in law school, we promised to be in each other's weddings. I'd be one of his groomsmen, and he'd be my best man. Well, that wasn't possible, because someone didn't check with me before setting his wedding date," Spencer teased, to a round of chuckles. "I'm sure some of you wanted to attend Jamer's wedding yesterday in New York, right? And were disappointed that you had to choose between his and mine?"
"That's right!" someone called out from the small crowd.
"Spence, what are you doing?" Jamie whispered to his oldest friend.
"Well, I have a way to fix that, if you good people can stick around for a few more minutes. We have a wedding venue, and an officiant, and, most importantly, we have a bride and groom. What do you say, Jaimer? You up for a wedding redux?"
"Spence, this is your day. Yours and Margie's," Jamie argued quietly.
"It is, and we want to spend a small part of it attending your wedding, Jay," Spencer returned. "Come on, just say yes. Or 'I do.'"
Jamie smiled at Spencer's bad joke. He looked over at his wife. "Ed, what do you think?"
Eddie giggled. "Jamie, it's the wedding we wanted! Just us and a few friends and not a lot of fuss."
"Okay. Okay, let's do it!" Jamie told Spencer.
"Did you here that? We're having a wedding!" Spencer announced to his guests. "Those of you that don't know Jamie or Eddie, please head on inside to the reception. Margie and I will be there soon. Or stay for Jamie and Eddie's wedding, if you'd like." Spencer turned back to his bride. "Margie, is there anything we're missing?" he asked her with a wink.
"Well, honey, Jamie has you for a groomsman, but Eddie doesn't have a bridesmaid. And I'm sure they would both like to have some guests of their own," Margie replied.
Jamie glanced at Eddie, then at Spencer. What had his friend done? "Spence?"
"Good thing we thought of that." Spencer waved at someone back at one of the staging tents, and a small group of people stepped out from behind it.
"Hailey!" Eddie called as she spotted her college friend. "Mom! And Jamie, there's your father and Henry, and Danny and his boys."
Jamie followed Eddie's gaze. Just as she had said, there was his father, helping a high-heeled Lena Janko across the sand, with the rest of the Reagan men close behind.
"Come on, Eddie, let's go get you ready." Margie hooked her arm through Eddie's and gently pulled her away from Jamie and toward the other women.
Jamie loosely held Eddie's hand until she was too far away, then let Spencer lead him over to his family. "Dad! Grandpa! Didn't expect to see you here. You either, Dan," he greeted his family. "Erin couldn't make it?"
Danny shrugged. "She had a trial tomorrow she can't miss. I tried to tell her, it's baby brother's wedding. Doesn't happen every day. But now here you are, getting married for the second time in as many days."
Jamie snickered. "Wasn't my idea."
"Oh, and here's something for you." Danny handed his brother a card.
Jamie looked down at the card, which he quickly realized was printed with the vows he and Eddie had written for each other a year ago. The ones they're read to each other before the family at the family dinner immediately after their engagement.
"Figured you could use them, since we're not at the church or anything and you don't have to use their vows this time," Danny explained. "Hailey has a copy for Eddie. And in case she asks, we're not going on your honeymoon with you. Dad, Pops and the boys and I are staying somewhere else for a few days while you and your new bride enjoy that honeymoon villa."
Beside them, Spencer returned a thumbs-up sign from someone back at staging tent. "You ready?" he asked his friend.
Jamie smiled. "Ready."
==BB==BB==
Eddie stood at the back of the wedding area, looking down the aisle at her husband, or her soon-to-be husband. How in the world did he make a cream-colored polo shirt, cuffed-up khakis and sandals look so darn sexy? She took a deep breath and took one step forward as Spencer's and Margie's xylophonist began playing the wedding march again. One step, and another. With each step, she went over their vows in her head. She looked up at Jamie again, who was smiling at her. That same smile she'd seen on his face as her soon-to-be father-in-law was walking her down the aisle of Saint Patrick's Cathedral yesterday, but more relaxed today. A few more steps, and she was standing in front of the altar, facing Jamie, holding his hands.
And then the Episcopal priest was saying something she should probably be paying attention to, but she could only focus on Jamie. Her husband… or her soon to be husband? Then, only a few minutes later, the officiant was turning to them.
"The couple will now recite their vows. I understand Jamie and Eddie have written their own vows, reflective of their service in the New York City Police Department. Jamie, Eddie, you may now recite your vows."
Jamie gently squeezed his new/soon-to-be-wife's hands and looked into her eyes. "I, Jamie Reagan, promise you, Eddie Janko, that I will always have your back."
Eddie returned his gaze, and suddenly felt tears welling up. But she wasn't going to start crying, at least not yet. She took a deep breath. "If you fall behind, I'll wait up."
"I'll… I'll earn your respect and pay you respect every day we have."
At the unexpected stumble, Eddie looked closer at her husband and noticed the smallest glimmer of tears in his eyes also. "I'll be your scout, your…" Eddie paused as her voice waivered.
"Hold it together, Janko," Jamie whispered.
Eddie nodded. "…your night watchman, your cavalry."
"Your medic," Jamie's voice almost broke.
Eddie ran a thumb across the back of his hand with a quiet whisper, "Same to you."
Yeah, kiddo, what she said. Hold it together. Jamie thought he heard another voice whisper in his ear. Of course Joe would be here. He smiled and took a quick breath. "… your chaplain in our army of two."
Eddie saw Jamie's lips twist upward into a smile and felt herself smiling in response. "No retreat, no surrender." She tried to keep from laughing. Which of them had put Springsteen lyrics in their vows?
"No retreat, no surrender." Jamie echoed as his smile grew even bigger.
"You can count on me."
"And you can count on me."
Jamie gave the wedding officiant a quick nod, to let them know the vows were complete, and he stepped forward. "Jamie and Eddie, today you renewed the vows you made to each other on your wedding day. You've shared the joys, blessings, and the challenges, of married life, if only for one day. May this ceremony reinforce your commitment to working together to make your marriage grow and blossom in the years to come. With that, I conclude this ceremony. Jamie and Eddie, you may now kiss."
With those words, Eddie let go of Jamie's hands and wrapped her arms around him, even as she felt his arms encircling her. She stood up on her toes as he leaned down to press his lips to hers. Their first kiss as a married couple. Well, not their first kiss; they had kissed at the conclusion of the ceremony at St. Pat's, and they had done a whole lot more than kiss last night. But that kiss at St. Pat's had been Jameson Reagan and Edit Janko-Reagan.
But this. This would always be their first kiss as Jamie and Eddie Reagan.
