Hey guys! This story takes place after the Gaang is pointed in the direction of the Forgetful Valley in the comic "The Search", where they stay the night before they head out. Just a little Kataang fluff that I think might have happened. Hope you guys enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Aang laid on Appa's back as he watched the night sky. It had always amazed him just how beautiful the stars in the sky could be. Each and every one of them were distinctly different, yet they all were made of the same essence, reminding him of what the man at the Swamp had taught him. On the outside, they all looked different, but on the inside, they all wanted the same things. To live a good life and to spend their time with the ones they loved.
Speaking of the one I love, Aang thought with a smile as he saw Katara climb up Appa and lay down next to him. "Hey, Sweetie."
She smiled back a bit weakly, apparently still peeved from her argument with Azula. He laughed and took her hand in his. "Hey, Sweetie," she replied tiredly. The fight with the insane firebender, despite being only verbal had clearly taken a lot out of her.
"You're finally done arguing with her, huh?" he laughed a little, making her smile in spite of her annoyance at Azula.
"Yeah. I decided that I had enough and had to get away from her." She grimaced and shook her head. "She's just so… ugh," she groaned in annoyance and sighed.
Aang chuckled and leaned over to kiss her cheek, catching her by surprise as a blush found its way onto her face, but not without being accompanied by a smile. "Well, at least you managed to get through it without actually fighting. The last thing we need right now is more fighting."
Katara laughed a little and nodded. "Yeah, I know, but it's not easy. She's just so… evil. She wanted to burn down the house of that family! They were so nice to us and-" she cut herself off and took a deep breath. Ever since she and Aang had started dating, she had taken it upon herself to start working on controlling her temper. She still struggled here and there, but she was making progress, slowly but surely. "I just don't get how anyone could want to do that to such a beautiful family."
"Katara, Azula's clearly not in her right mind," he reminded her. "There's a reason that she's been locked away for a while."
"But she was like that before she went crazy!" Katara argued. "She's always been insane, just not as much as she is now."
"Sweetie-" Aang tried to calm her down, but this time the frustrated water bender wouldn't have it. She was going to speak her mind and let him know just how much she disliked the insane Fire Nation Princess.
"No, you don't understand, Aang! It's because of people like her that I lost my mother! First, Sozin started the war which led to all this happening and the oppression of my people and the extinction of yours, then Ozai was the one who ordered for them to come when he heard that there was a Water bender in the South Pole. Then the man who-" She felt tears welling up in her eyes before she forced them back. "-took away my mother did what he did. And if that wasn't bad enough, she almost took you away from me!" she finished angrily, then gasped as she realized she had said what she had been truly thinking.
Aang watched her with wide eyes as she was frozen in shock from her unwitting confession. But she was relieved when he pulled her to him and hugged her tightly, making her enjoy his embrace as she hugged him back. "Wow. I didn't know that affected you so badly."
She nodded against his chest. "You have no idea, Aang. When you died… I died, too. I was a wreck. The only thing that kept me going was that I knew I had to get you out of there. It took all of the courage I had to get to you and get out of there." She smiled sadly. "The courage that my mother gave me."
He squeezed her tighter and softly kissed her head. "I understand, Sweetie, but if I can forgive her, can't you?"
"It's different for you, Aang. You were raised to forgive and forget. But at least she didn't kill the person you're in love with!"
"I know," he admitted carefully. "But it all worked out for the best. We're both alive and we're together. That's all that matters to me." He looked down into her eyes. "I might not have liked being killed, but if it was a choice between doing that moment over again and surviving, but not being with you or dying and being with you, I would pick you every time, Katara. Through all of the bad things that happened in my life, losing my people, being in an iceberg for a hundred years, having to worry about defeating the Firelord… All the troubles of my life were worth it because I get to be with you."
Katara's eyes watered at this as she pulled him into a loving kiss, making him smile as he kissed her back. After a few moments, they reluctantly pulled apart and looked at each other. "The only thing that I regret is that my mother died," she said to him, looking deeply into his eyes. "But if having her live meant that I never got to meet you… I would pick you everytime, too."
He smiled in adoration at her and pulled her in for another kiss which she accepted eagerly, getting lost in his taste, his touch, the scent that she loved with all of her heart. They slowly pulled away and smiled at each other. "I love you so much, Sweetie."
"I love you too, Sweetie," she smiled, giving him one more kiss before he gathered her in his arms and they lay there in a comfortable silence.
As they lay there, Katara couldn't help but think about all that had happened during the day. With Azula's craziness and with worrying about Aang as he crashed to the ground, it had been a long, tiring day. But as her thoughts continued, she remembered their conversation with Noriko. But you two are a little young to be thinking about marriage, aren't you?
She remembered her surprise at the question, but she also remembered how happy the thought of marrying him made her. Even if she had gotten caught red-handed, she loved the thought of marrying him. She smiled the same smile she had when Noriko had asked them that question.
You know what? I take that back. Love leads where love leads, regardless of age.
Aang noticed the big smile on her face and looked down at her questioningly. "What are you thinking about?" he asked curiously.
Katara smiled sheepishly and shrugged against his chest, enjoying the warmth he gave. "I don't know… I was just thinking about when we were talking to Noriko."
Aang smiled at this. "Yeah, Noriko was really nice. Their whole family was."
"Yeah, they were," she agreed a bit hesitantly, somewhat scared of speaking her mind, but she decided that relationships were built on trust, and she didn't plan on breaking the trust they shared now. "But I was thinking more of what we were talking about at the table."
Aang blushed heavily, making her smile in adoration at him. Even after being together for a while, she was happy that she could still do that to him with just a simple sentence. "Oh."
"They have such a lovely family, you know? And they're so happy, and I just… I know she kind of caught us off guard, but… I really liked the idea of being married."
"Really?" Aang asked in surprise, staring into her eyes, searching for any kind of sign that she meant what she said.
"Yeah," she shrugged and looked away in an attempt to hide her burning cheeks. "I know I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Aang. And I know that it might be wishful thinking, but technically in my tribe, I'm only a few months away from being of marrying age. Do you know how old your people had to be when they would be allowed to get married?" she asked shyly.
He thought about it and shrugged. "Normally, once air benders got their tattoos, they were considered full members of the community, but most of the time people were at least sixteen when that happened. I got mine when I was twelve, so I don't know how that would work." Katara nodded slowly, pondering this herself. "But I am the last air bender, so I think I can decide how old I have to be."
She looked up at him. "Well? How old do you have to be?"
Aang thought about it, and after musing on the idea, he came to a decision. "Well, if we get married, I at least want to be fully grown so that I can support us."
"Aang-"
"I know, I know, but I would feel better if I was a full adult so that we can… start a family," he admitted with a blush as he forced his gaze up to the sky. Katara turned around in his arms and looked up at him, turning his face to look her in the eyes.
"If that's what you really want, then I'm okay with waiting. Just know that I'm ready whenever you are," she told him with a smile as she placed a soft kiss on his lips. "Because you're worth waiting for."
He smiled and kissed her. "Trust me, Sweetie. I can't wait for that day, but I want to be the best husband to you, and if that means I have to wait a little longer to make you mine, then I'll wait if it means I can be a good husband."
Katara rolled her eyes and gave him another kiss. "I'm already yours, Aang. We don't have to get married to show others how much I love you. Even if we never get married, I'll always be yours, Sweetie. Always." Aang smiled widely at this and pulled her into a loving kiss, making her sigh in contentment of the moment as she kissed him back. After a few moments, they both pulled apart and held each other close. "I love you, Sweetie."
Aang smiled softly and kissed her head as she snuggled into his chest. "I love you too, Sweetie," he murmured, holding onto her tightly as they both fell into a peaceful sleep, content knowing that one day they would finally be husband and wife.
