A/N: This is a Towen story I wrote a while back considering what would happen if Teddy and Owen were to run into Cristina. It takes place back when Owen and Teddy came off parental leave; before any of this mess with Teddy cheating :( I hope you enjoy this story and please leave a review to let me know what you think!
"No, I swear she said it last night," Owen told Teddy. He peered into the stroller that Teddy was pushing to look at Allison. "Didn't you? You said 'dada'."
Teddy laughed. "You're delusional. She is three months old. She did not say that."
"She did," Owen insisted teasingly. "You're just jealous."
Teddy crinkled her nose at Owen and playfully hit his shoulder. At that moment, Leo, who had been walking through the hospital holding Owen's hand, plopped himself onto the floor. This was becoming a regular occurrence for him. Leo constantly saw Allison being held and was jealous. So, he would choose to stop walking at random times so that Owen or Teddy would carry him.
"Come on, Leo," Owen encouraged. "Stand up."
"Yeah, don't you want to walk to daycare and play with your friends?" Teddy asked him.
"No," Leo protested with a pout. He reached his hands in the air. "Daddy, up!"
Owen and Teddy exchanged a glance and sighed. They tried not giving in to Leo's demands too often but if they didn't get the kids to daycare soon they would both be late to work.
"Put him in the stroller," Teddy told Owen. Owen nodded, lifted up his son, and put him in the double stroller beside Allison.
Once Leo was situated, Teddy and Owen looked in front of them to start walking but instead saw a familiar face. Cristina Yang.
"Woah," Cristina said as she reached them. She saw Owen and Teddy walking together and Teddy was pushing two kids in a stroller. She could only assume that the kids belonged to Owen and Teddy.
"Cristina," Teddy greeted, trying to sound happy but feeling a little uncomfortable. Owen was her ex-husband and now she was with him.
"What are you doing here?" Owen asked, almost abrasively.
"Visiting Mer," Cristina answered. "Are these your kids?"
"Yeah," Teddy answered.
"No," Owen denied. Teddy looked at him in surprise. Owen swallowed nervously. "Well, they're Teddy's kids."
"Oh," Cristina replied, confused as to why Owen looked so nervous. She wouldn't have cared if they were his kids. In fact, she'd be happy for him for finally getting his dream. She would have even found it amusing if that dream included Teddy as she suspected their friendship had always been more than that. She turned to Teddy instead. "So, are you just visiting from Germany?"
"Oh, no, I moved back here about a year ago," Teddy told her.
"You gave up MedCom?" Cristina asked, thinking that that was a terrible decision.
"Yeah," Teddy admitted, feeling embarrassed. Cristina was so career focused that Teddy felt silly for giving up her amazing dream job for a family. Of course, Teddy was happy with her decision to do so but having to admit it to Cristina, who wouldn't understand, made her feel subpar as a surgeon.
"Why?" Cristina questioned.
"You know, I'm running late for work," Owen interrupted. "Good to see you."
Teddy watched in confusion as Owen went in the other direction. She couldn't believe he had left before even finishing to bring the kids to daycare or kissing her goodbye. So many thoughts were whirling through Teddy's head. She was pissed at Owen for lying to Cristina about the kids not being his but even more so for hiding the fact that they were together. Did he not want Cristina to know because he still had feelings for her? The way Owen acted nervous made Teddy think that he definitely still had feelings for Cristina.
"What's his problem?" Cristina questioned after Owen was out of sight.
"Many things," Teddy grumbled. She felt sad about Owen's reaction and wanted to get away to stop herself from getting emotional in front of Cristina. "Actually, I need to get them up to daycare so I'm not late for work. Maybe we can talk again while you're here. Tell me about some of the research you're working on in Switzerland."
Cristina agreed and Teddy continued down the hall. All day, Teddy felt off. She was so angry and sad at Owen disowning her and their children at the sight of Cristina. At the same time, she felt mad at herself for thinking that Owen could ever truly love her. He had chosen Cristina way back when she had first came to Seattle and if given the option he would choose her again. If not for the two children holding him back. Teddy felt like maybe those were the only two things tying him to her. She knew that Owen would never go back to Cristina because he loved his kids and knew that Cristina didn't want kids. But, still, it hurt to think that she would still be his second choice if the kids weren't in the picture.
When Teddy got home, she put Allison to bed and brought Leo into hers and Owen's room. She turned on the TV for Leo who cuddled into the mass of pillows and blankets and watched TV. While watching Leo, Teddy grabbed a duffel bag from the closet and started throwing clothes into it.
Teddy decided that she refused to be Owen's second choice anymore. Even if his first choice would never happen, she hated feeling this inadequate. She packed until Owen came home.
Owen went into the bedroom and saw that Leo had fallen asleep watching TV in their bed. And, Teddy was packing a bag.
"What are you doing?" Owen asked, confused.
"I'm going to stay at a hotel for now," Teddy answered angrily. She didn't stop to look at him and continued filling her bag.
"What are you talking about?" Owen questioned. She didn't answer him and continued to pack so he grabbed her wrist gently to get her to stop. Teddy ripped her arm away from Owen's grip. "Teddy, what's going on? What happened?"
"What happened?" Teddy repeated with tears in her eyes. "You lied to Cristina about me and the kids."
"That bothered you?" Owen asked cluelessly.
"Yes!" Teddy confirmed. "Of course it did. You didn't want her to know we're together. Because you still have feelings for her. Or, because you're embarrassed to be with me. I'm not entirely sure but whatever the reason, it's not fair to me. I literally want the entire world to know that we're together and you don't."
"Woah, Teddy, slow down," Owen said in a low voice. Owen placed his hands on her shoulders. "Look, you've got it all wrong. I don't have feelings for Cristina anymore. And, I couldn't possibly be embarrassed about being with you. You are amazing, beautiful, smart, funny - should I keep going?"
Teddy shrugged and gave Owen a slight smile. "I guess that's good for now. So, then why did you lie?"
"Because she's my ex-wife," Owen answered as if that were enough of an explanation. Teddy raised an eyebrow at him to probe him to explain further. "She's my ex-wife and admitting that I'm in love with you, well, that would be like confirming to her that I made the wrong choice by choosing her. That I loved you even when I was married to her. I felt bad, so I lied."
Teddy pursed her lips. She felt less angry about his lie to Cristina now but didn't like that he was now lying to her. "You don't have to lie. I know you didn't love me back then. I don't care as long as you love me now."
"I do love you now," Owen confirmed, kissing her forehead. He pulled back and looked into her big green eyes. "But, I also loved you back then too. I've been in love with you forever, Teddy. It just took me a long time to realize it and for the timing to work in our favor."
Teddy smiled, took Owen by the collar of his shirt, and pulled him in for a kiss. Owen kissed her passionately, pushing her back onto the bed.
"Wait, wait," Teddy said, stopping Owen from climbing on top of her. She looked at the other side of the bed where Leo was still fast asleep with his thumb in his mouth.
"You stay there," Owen instructed. "I'll take him to bed."
Teddy smiled as she watched Owen take Leo into his arms and carry him out of their room. Teddy stood up and started unpacking her bag. She felt bad for not trusting Owen but at the same time, he had hurt her plenty of times before. She had reason to protect her heart. But, she believed what Owen was telling her and knew that it was time to start trusting him more. He had been consistently proving to her that he loved her and was loyal to her.
"What are you doing now?" Owen asked as he came back to their bedroom.
"Unpacking," Teddy explained.
Owen approached her and pushed the duffel bag from the bed onto the floor. He held her by the hips. "Didn't I say to stay where you were?"
Teddy smiled. "Well, I don't take orders from you anymore, Major."
"I liked you better when you were below me," Owen teased.
"I can still be underneath you," Teddy told him seductively. She kissed him passionately and pulled him closer while his hands pushed her hips back towards the bed. They fell onto the bed, Owen hovering over Teddy. Teddy wrapped her legs around Owen's hips, pulling him closer so his body was pressed against hers.
"I love you, Teddy," Owen reassured her, his lips inches from hers.
"I love you too, Owen," Teddy replied. Owen kissed her and Teddy melted into him. She had spent the last fifteen years being in love with him but this was the first time she truly felt secure that her feelings were reciprocated. The first time she felt like she was actually his first choice. She had finally gotten everything she wanted.
