A/N: so, here I am again. This story takes place somewhere around season 4, so Eddie will be in there. It's quite different from my previous one, and NOT related to it, so you can chose to not read the other one before this.
This chapter is short, according to my standard, but it is just the introduction. Now I had to stop work (I'm smart working only one day per week), so I have quite some time to write, so I think Chapter 2 will be out very soon.
Hope you enjoy! Let me know with a review!
Happy reading!
Chapter 01 - The night shift
"Ready to go, partner?" Eddie entered the men locker room without knocking, as usual, sure he was the only one remained in it.
It had become almost a ritual, between the two of them, before and after shift. She had learnt his timing, so when she entered she was quite sure to find him at least with his pants on, if not fully dressed, weather he was putting on the uniform or his civilian clothes.
"Ready" Jamie finished fixing his belt and took the NYPD jacket.
"Another night shift is waiting for us!"
Eddie loved night shifts as much as Jamie hated them.
"What's with you and Danny? How can you love so much night shifts?" he complained to her enthusiasm.
"Oh, come on, Jamie! New York gives its best during the night!"
"Oh, yeah, its best… robberies for a bottle of alcohol, drug dealers, drunk people…"
"... The lights, the skyline and the bridges, the music…"
"You know we are on shift, right?"
"Killjoy" She punched his elbow, slightly "Let's go."
"Yes Ma'am" he chucked, and she hit him again.
"Heads up out there, guys!" Renzulli greeted them as they reached for the car.
"Copy" the two answered.
Eddie couldn't quite explain the relationship between Jamie and Renzulli, but she didn't dare to ask him, even if Jamie was not exactly closed off regarding his family or job. He told her he was partnered with Renzulli right after the Academy, but she suspected Renzulli looked at him a little bit differently than just that.
The Sergeant really cared about Jamie, and she really hoped to get there too with his partner.

"Night shift!" Danny entered the 5-4 precinct happy as a kid on Christmas Day, after he discovered Santa had brought him all the presents he asked for.
"Not again, Reagan" Baez begged him.
He grinned happily, perfectly knowing she hated night shifts. For her, it was difficult to kick-in the night-day routine, which left her grumpy for at least a week after the night shift rotation.
"Come on! It will be fun!" he cheered, the car keys already into his hand.
He couldn't wait for the tour to begin.

"David-12, shoots between 10th and 41W" the dispatch called, interrupting their usual bantering
"David-12. Copy" Jamie immediately answered, pressing his foot on the accelerator and turning on lights and sirens, while Eddie held himself to the handle.
He took just a second to check she was safe, before starting driving as fast as he could toward the assigned destination.
As soon as they arrived, they saw two man threatening a nurse, shooting in the air. He exchanged a quick look with Eddie, receiving a nod and a determinate gaze, gun already in hand. She was ready. He nodded and jumped out of the car as soon as it stopped.
"NYPD" he called out, as Eddie followed suit a couple of seconds later. He could see her out of the corner of his own eyes. "Drop the guns!"
The two directed a couple of shots in their direction, which forced them to look for shelter behind a trash bin, then sprinted away.
Jamie and Eddie didn't lose time. The started running right behind them, shouting them to stop, but, of course with no positive response.
Jamie increased his speed, noticing they were directed toward an isolated area. He knew from experience isolated area never ended well. He kept also an eye on his young partner, just to be sure she was still there, which she was.
They ended up in a construction site, empty now that it was night. The perps seemed to know the place well, and as he tried not to kill himself among the debris, they were able to hide himself.
Jamie stopped just the time to allow Eddie to reunite with him, before leading the way toward the work in progress building. He took cover with Eddie behind a column, and gestured her to be quiet.
He hated and loved this moments.
Now everything was completely silent, and he could almost feel on his skin the tension for this whole situation. He and Eddie stayed still, panting for the long run and trying to figure out event the lowest of the noises. They didn't dare to ask for backup; their voices could reveal their position.
Eddie looked at him, her eyes asking what was the plan from now on. He put on an hand. For now, their main task was to stay alive; if they could also arrest the shooters in the meantime, that would be good.
Then the hell happened.

It was quiet night, luckily.
Danny and Baez were enjoying their tour, which brought them in an usually quiet block.
He stopped the car and called Linda right before their children bedtime, so that he could wish them a good night and make sure his wife was okay.
He checked in also with Erin; not that his sister was in any danger, but since she divorced, he, Joe and Jamie started to call her before going to bed. She never complained about that, so they just kept going.
She said him Jamie didn't call her yet, but they both knew he was on duty, so he was probably busy with his work, nothing to worry about.
"I'll check on the kid as soon as I can" he assured; it wasn't the first time he turned on the radio frequencies of the 12th justo to check if everything was alright "Good night, sis"
"Good night, Danny. Don't forget the roast tomorrow"
"Copy. Good night"
Danny hung up the phone.
"Everything alright?" Baez asked him
"Yeah. My brother hasn't called Erin, yet, but he is on shift too, so he is probably busy"
"Wanna check?"
Danny shook his head no. He had to learn to leave Jamie do his job. He had been an officer for four years now, and it was time for Danny to just trust him and his boss.
"Do we have anything?" he asked, turning his attention back on the job.
"Nothing, yet. Not even a drunk"
"George-4-7" the dispatch called in that moment "Reported a body on East 124th"
"George-4-7. Copy" Baez answered as he turned on lights and siren.
They got there in about 10 minutes. It was dark, to the point they had to use their torch to where they were going. It was a dark street, next to the Robert Kennedy Bridge. The area was quite empty that hour of the night, being only schools and playgrounds, around there. Aldo, it was a good place for drug dealers.
They advanced slowly, guns in hands.
"Overdose?" Baez whispered, noticing a body not far from them. It was in dark corner, behind the public toilet of the park.
"Probably." Danny answered "Watch where you put your feet"
They carefully drew near the body, using torches to try and see if he was still breathing. He kneeled beside the body; first thing they noticed was that the he was actually a she.
"Baez, call 9-1-"
Danny never finished the sentence.
The girl suddenly moved, trapping him into a deadly grasp. He was caught completely by surprise, and so was Baez, who dropped to the ground, hit first by what seemed a baseball bat and, right after that, knocked out by a taser shock.
Danny tried to fight, but the grasp on his neck was preventing him to breathe. He brought both his hands on the girl's arm, trying to lose the grasp and get some air, and from there star to defend himself, but hypoxia was starting to kick in.
He tried to kick and keep away Baez's attackers when they came for him, but when they both released a shock into his body everything turned black.

Shots began to fly all around them.
Acting by pure instinct, Jamie grabbed Eddie and crouched on the ground protecting her with his own body.
"Jamie" Eddie screamed, more out of surprise than scared.
"We gotta get out of here!"
"How!?"
"Run! Now" Jamie made sure she was the first one to sprint, so that he could offer a shield from the bullets.
He fell down with a scream when one of the shots caught him in the back, luckily hitting the vest.
"Jamie!" Eddie stopped and drug him back up "Can you run?"
He just nodded, completely out of breath from the shot, pain radiating from the point hit. The vest avoided the bullet to enter his body, but it didn't stop the violence of the impact, or the pain coming from it. It was the second time he took a shot, still, it didn't go any better than the first one.
Jamie ran along with Eddie, at a slower pace since it was difficult to breathe.
They didn't see the men until the fell directly into their arms. Two pinned him to the ground, while other two took Eddie
"Jamie!"
"Eddie!" Jamie started to struggle, trying to free himself, as he did when he used to play with Danny and Joe. In the academy, he discovered a lot of what he did as a game, was actually basic self defence, and that, thanks to the, it was almost an instinct.
"Stop it now, or the girl dies"
Jamie froze where he was at the ultimatum, not only for it, but also because he understood he could not free himself.
"Leave her alone!" he shouted.
"Shut the hell up, Reagan!" of the the men who kept him down barked, hitting him with his elbow on the back of his head, strong enough to make him hit the ground with his face.
"Jamie!"
It was now Eddie's turn to be hit.
"Leave her! Eddie!"
As a response, she got teased until she passed out, or died, Jamie couldn't tell for sure; actually he didn't even had the time to check, because they hit him again and everything got black.
