Author's Note:
Hi guys. Welcome to chapter 1. I'd like to make some things clear. My Hardy Boys fanfics will basically follow the same pattern that the original stories follow.
They'll be around 200 pages like the originals. None of the original characters will be removed, but a lot of new ones will be added, and they will make recurring appearances, instead of being there for just one book.
I'm open to any and all reviews and PM's. Please do favorite or follow if you like the story. Thanks for reading!
Chapter 1: Crashing into a Mystery
"Can't you make this thing go any faster," 17 year old Joe Hardy said grimly. "We're already late. You know Callie and Iola. They'll kill us if we're late today." Joe shook his blond hair out of his eyes, and leaned forward to look at the Estimated Time of Arrival on the GPS system of the Hardy's new car, pulling on his seatbelt as he did so.
"Chill out, Joe," 18 year old Frank Hardy said. "It won't do them any good if we end up crashing or falling off the cliff before getting there. Also, don't you know it's quite fashionable to be late."
"This isn't being late Frank! This is called missing half of the party," Joe whined. "Don't you remember that they promised they had a mystery for us to solve?"
Frank sighed at his younger brother's antics. "Yes joe, but these are very sharp turns. We aren't going to solve any mysteries if we break our legs in a fall." Frank, the more sensible of the 2 brothers kept driving at the same speed, taking another sharp turn to head onto the next street.
"I never should have let you talk me into going with you to visit dad's client,"Joe said. The slightly miffed teenager, who was the more impulsive of the two brothers punched the dashboard of the car, before clutching his fist in pain.
Frank and Joe were on their way to a party at Callie's house. All of their friends from school would be present along with their dates. This included slightly overweight Chet Morton who could eat 3 pizzas by himself, athletic Biff Hooper, the boxing champion of Bayport High, Friendly outgoing Tony Prito, who had a side job as the manager of the pizza parlor, as well as nerdy Phil Cohen, who could hack just about anything.
They were heading back from their trip to visit one of their father's clients, a Mr. Alfred Johnson, who lived in Pleasantville, about an hours drive from Bayport. Fenton Hardy was one of the best police officers on the New York City Police Department. After 15 years of being a police, he had finally decided to retire, and settled down in the small and quaint, but lively town of Bayport, where he opened his own private practice. His two sons, though young, had often assisted him in his cases and were looking to follow in their father's footsteps as detectives.
They started their career by finding out The Secret of the Wooden Horse. Just recently, they had finished helping their father track down an assassin named Al Rousassa when they discovered What Happened at the Mall.
As Frank looked back, he saw a black Mercedes Benz coming towards him fast. The driver was going well over the speed limit. As he caught up to them. Frank pulled over to the side to give the driver room to pass them. As they moved out of the way, the driver rushed past, grazing the car, and almost pushing the boys off the road. All they saw as the car zipped past them was that the driver was a tall, broad shouldered individual with a cold expression on his face.
The car roared off and disappeared around the next corner of the road, leaving only a set of dirt tracks in their wake. "That man shouldn't have a license," Frank said, as the brothers got out of the car to survey the damage done by the black car.
"Yea. That man's a menace," Joe said angrily, as he surveyed the smashed right headlight of their car. "It's a brand new car too, damn it. I sure wish I had gotten the drivers license plate number," He said as they slowly looked around the car.
A couple minutes later, they found not only the smashed headlight, but also many spots where the paint had come off and a large dent in the drivers side door. They decided they would take the car to a garage first thing tomorrow morning.
The brothers continued on to Callie's party, excitement growing in their minds over the prospect of receiving another mystery to solve. As they pulled up to the driveway, they noticed another unfamiliar car parked outside right in front of the house. 2 people in the car were watching the house, and looked away when they saw Frank looking at them.
Shrugging it off, the 2 brothers went up to the front door and rang the bell. Almost immediately, the door was opened by a pretty girl with long blonde hair and brown eyes. Callie, Frank's regular date, glared at the brothers as they entered the house. "So nice of you to actually show up," She said as she led them to the backyard where the rest of the friends were waiting for them.
"Make way, everybody. Today the great Hardy Brothers have graced us with their presence," Chet shouted to the crowd, purposefully making his voice sound as professional as he could as Frank and Joe made their way to the others,
"Better late than never, boys," An angry voice said from the end of the refreshments table. Both boys blushed as they realized they had been over 1.5 late to the party, and turned to look at the speaker. The voice belonged to slim, dark haired Iola Morton, who regularly dated Joe.
"Sorry guys. We were working on something for dad," Frank apologized. "He wanted us to go visit a client of his in pleasantville and pick up some more information from him about his latest case."
"But first, let me introduce you to a new friend of mine," Iola said. She motioned behind her, and another young girl came and joined them. She had blue hair down to her shoulder, tied back in a ponytail. "Julie just moved here about a week ago from California and is also going to Bayport High with the rest of us."
"Hello, I'm Julie," She said shyly to the boys. "It's nice to meet you. I've heard a lot about your hobby of solving mysteries."
"Remember when I told you that we have a mystery waiting," Callie chimed in, as Frank and Joe nodded. "Well, Julie here has a mystery that she wants solved. We told her about you boys, and she said she would like your help in solving this mystery."
"Can you please tell us more about this mystery, Julie," Frank urged the shy girl, excitement evident in his eyes.
"Let's skip that and start the party already," lanky Biff Hooper complained. "You guys can discuss your mystery afterwards." The boys laughed and decided to carry on with the party. Iola turned on the music, and the couples moved onto the dance floor.
As they got tired, they decided they should head inside, and decided to watch a movie on the TV. They decided on watching The Scarlet Clue. As they were about to play the movie a loud bang was heard, and all the lights in the room suddenly turned off.
"Huh? What happened," Frank questioned, feeling the wall and cabinets around him for the light switch or a flashlight.
"I don't know what happened," Iola said, scared. Joe moved over to find iola and pulled her close to him.
"It's probably just a power outage. Don't worry," Joe said protectively. He looked towards his brother and caught his eye and knew what Frank was thinking. There was just a slight possibility that the electricity had been turned off from the outside, probably by the 2 people watching the house from their car.
Suddenly, they all jumped in surprise as they heard a scream in the other room. They all ran out into the living room just in time to see 2 men forcefully pushing Julie out the front door. Frank and Joe immediately jumped into action. They threw open the front door and sprinted after the 2 men.
Both men were wearing masks, which prevented the boy from seeing their faces. One was quite tall and the boys thought he looked familiar. The other one was slightly shorter, but surprisingly agile for his size. When they saw the boys chasing them, they let go of Julie and tried to attack the boys.
Joe went after the first one and threw a punch in his face which he dodged with ease. Since the man he was fighting had short legs, Joe had the advantage of speed and was able to dodge most of the man's blows. Frank on the other hard was having a hard time. His opponent was just as good as Frank, and was easily a green belt in Karate.
The men had not yet noticed Biff, Tony, Phil, and Chet, who were about to join the fight as well. Callie stayed outside and comforted Julie who was sobbing and shaking with horror. "I'll go call the police," Iola said and ran into the house. When the 2 assailants heard that and saw that the other boys were joining the fray too, they quickly pushed the Hardy's back and ran towards their car.
Frank managed to place a well timed punch, and knocked off the mask of the person he was fighting. The brothers realized with a start, why the man seemed familiar to him. They were staring into the face of the driver of the black mercedes that had passed them on the road, and damaged their car. The man snarled, and used their split second of hesitation to push the boys away and jump into the car after his partner.
