WAR
WAR NEVER CHANGES
LONG AGO IN THE LAND YOU NOW CALL CHINA
THERE LIVED TWO RACES OF HUMANS
ONE WERE THE ZHEWANJI (BENDERS)
WHO WERE ABLE TO CONTROL THE ELEMENTS AROUND THEM
THE OTHER WERE FEIBENDESI (NON-BENDERS)
THEY COULDN'T CONTROL THE ELEMENTS BUT CREATED TREMENDOUS TECHNOLOGY
WITH THEIR POWERS AND TECHNOLOGY THEY CREATED GRAND CIVILISATIONS NO OTHERS COULD IN THE ANCIENT WORLD
IT SEEMED TO BE A TRUE GOLDEN AGE FOR HUMANITY
HOWEVER ALONG WITH THE GOLDEN AGE ALSO CAME RADICAL IDEOLOGIES
ONE OF WHICH MADE THE FEIBENDESI START BELIEVING THAT THE ZHEWANJI WERE PLOTTING AGAINST THEM
IT STARTED OFF AS A CONSPIRACY THEORY
BUT THEN THE CAUSE GREW LARGER OVER THE DECADES
SOON MOST OF THE FEIBENDESI STARTED TO TURN AGAINST THE ZHEWANJI
THUS BEGAN THE GREAT WAR
THIS WAS HUMANITY'S FIRST BLOODY CONFLICT
MANY LOST THEIR LIVES
ENTIRE CITIES COLLAPSED
ONE MAN KNOWN AS THE AVATAR, MASTER OF ALL ELEMENTS, BROUGHT HIS PEOPLE TO SAFETY USING SECRET ZHEWANJI POWERS
THEY NOW RESIDE IN ANOTHER WORLD
IT HAS BEEN THOUSANDS OF YEARS SINCE THEN
THE ZHEWANJI HAVE BUILT NEW CIVILISATIONS
BUT THEY HAVEN'T ADAPTED MUCH IN TECHNOLOGY
THE FEIBENDESI HAVE ADAPTED GREATLY WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY ALL AROUND
BUT CIVILISATION IS A THING OF THE PAST
BOTH WORLDS HAVE FORGOTTEN ABOUT ONE ANOTHER
BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT THEY STILL AREN'T CONNECTED
21ST MARCH 2279 - SOMEWHERE IN NEVADA, (FORMER) UNITED STATES - WORLD OF THE FEIBENDESI
The Mojave wasteland, a place that was once full of great cities like Las Vegas. These days there's just dust and ash, most of the humans that live there fight over the scraps trying to survive their short miserable lives. Sure there are places such as New Vegas or the NCR but all things must come to an end and some point as did the old world.
The canyons were fairly empty as always, the only inhabitants were the geckos living their useless lives eating whatever they can find.
Among the rocks was a tribal girl around 14, she was wearing tattered robes stitched together with pieces of cloth and animal hides with a hood that covered her long blonde hair. She had black paint across her pale blue eyes. The tribal stood 5'7 She was armed with a hunting rifle in hand and a sharp knife on her side. That was East, a hunter from the... well the east.
She slowly repositioned herself through the rocks unseen from the geckos thriving below. East aimed her gun at the mutants gripping it firmly. She pulled the trigger. The shot's sound echoed across the entire canyon.
The geckos scattered in fear.
East missed. The tribal groaned in frustration and holstered her weapon.
"You're not going to get somebody from afar if you're focused more on the target than the weapon," said a young man, sounding a few years older than East. She turned to the voice.
Out from the rocks came a brown-haired teenager in leather armour and a grey helmet. The person also wore a rebreather over his mouth and there was a visible scar on his left cheek. The guy had a large rucksack on his back, a pip-boy on his arm as well as a ballistic fist. He was armed with a shotgun in hand and a black revolver on his side. That was Ryan, a scavenger from California.
"On the bright side, your handling is getting better though," he said.
"In what way?" She asked.
"Well you could barely control your recoil when we first met. At least you could hold your weapon."
"I don't get why I need these gun lessons. What's wrong with a bow and arrow?"
"Bows and arrows aren't effective against the larger tribes and advanced factions out here. You'd be dead within second with sticks and string."
"The legion uses spears."
"Which is why they failed at the battle of Hoover dam."
East nodded, "I guess that makes sense. So what now?"
"I think we should kill some geckos at a shorter range. Let's see how you do."
Suddenly, Ryan's pip-boy started beeping. The tribal asked, "What is it?"
"There's a distress signal coming from up north. Hold on."
He switched the radio options to the distress call. What sounded like an Englishman talked on the radio, "Hello? Hello? Is anybody out there? I am stuck inside vault 43 at these coordinates. Please help."
"What was up with his voice?" Questioned East.
"I'm guessing he's British."
"What's a 'British'?"
"It's a guy from the other side of the world. I think they used to be a pre-war ally but these days I don't really know what's going on over there. Come, let's go check it out." They both journeyed to the source of the signal.
2 HOURS LATER - VAULT 43
The two finally arrived at the vault. It was hidden deep inside a cave.
"So the vault is in there?" asked the tribal.
"That's what my pip-boy says." Ryan replied.
"Are you sure you want to help whoever this guy is? I mean he's a complete stranger."
"If there's one thing I learned in the wasteland. It's to not be a selfish asshole." East nodded, the wastelanders went inside.
The cave was almost pitch black, Ryan was forced to use his pip-boy's light just to navigate the cave easily, it hardly worked, the place seemed to be a maze. Human bones littered the floor, mole rats and rad radroaches somehow infested the tunnels even though there's little light. On the bright side (no pun intended), East was able to kill a couple mutants at close range despite the darkness, good for her.
They finally arrived at the vault. The entrance's paint was fading away. Beside the door was a yellow console, accessible only by pip-boy. Ryan plugged his device into it. Suddenly, the entrance made a high pitched deafening sound as the door was opening. East covered her ears, Ryan didn't react as he was used to visiting and opening vaults across the wastes.
The entrance was wide open. It was slightly brighter on the inside but it was dull nonetheless. The structure had completely corroded. A few skeletons could be seen lying around on the floor, as if the caves weren't enough.
"Now I am regretting that I came with you to this place," said the tribal.
"We've survived places like this before. I'm sure we'll be fine."
"That's what you said back a vault 47 and we almost got slaughtered by a bunch of feral ghouls!" East shouted concerned for their safety.
"We'll be fine."
Suddenly, the same Englishman from earlier started talking on what sounded like a PA. "Oh thank God! People! I'm down in the overseer's office on floor 8. The elevators are still working."
"Who are you?" Ran asked.
"I'll explain everything when you get here."
A while later they were on the 8th floor as the Brit told them. Upon finding their way through the vault they have an unnerving feeling about the atmosphere of the place. Skeletons were around every corner, the walls told a bloody story from just markings and dust. "Are you sure we can trust this guy?" Asked the tribal, "I mean he could be a cannibal luring people into the vault."
"Look I have the same concerns as you have. But there's a chance that whoever the person is might actually need help."
"Fine I'm not gonna say I told you so when we're having our insides scooped out."
Ryan rolled his eyes. They were finally outside the overseers office. "So you ready to go inside?" he asked.
"No I'm not up for signing my own death! I'm staying outside!" East stood still in her place. Ryan opened the door, what he found in there was shocking. For there was no man in there, just a large computer monitor with a blue straight line.
"Hi!" Greeted the computer, it was the Brit from earlier.
"You're a computer?"
"Yes! My name is DAVE. I am the overseer of vault 41." Ryan grew even more concerned, the computer, DAVE, is the only inhabitant here inside a structure full of the dead.
"Can I ask you something?"
"It's what I promised when I talked to you back at the entrance. What did you want to know?"
"What happened to the dwellers of this place?"
"They died."
"I want something more specific." Ryan was horrified at what he heard next.
"The dwellers revolted against my power and some of the security and scientists in the year 2123. The people who escaped from the bombs came here, they became test subjects for something quit complex, the vault's purpose was for dimensional levels of transport with various objects from across the globe. The subjects were tested by interacting with these objects. Many of them died in agony. Some of the subjects were able to escape confinement and staged a coup which lasted a couple months, there was a lot of destruction. After a while of conflict, they were all wiped out, yet this halted all the experiments. However the battles damaged parts of the vault rendering it mostly useless. By the year 2130 the food started to run out and the required resources and technology to create more was scarce or damaged. People requested to come out of the vault but I declined it. I was a mindless AI back then, protocols dictated that if everything went wrong I had to make sure nobody left so I locked the vault. Then they started another revolt against me. I was forced to lock the doors to this room, it was hell for them for the next few years. Some of the dwellers turned to cannibalism, others went insane. I couldn't do anything for them. I just sat there and observed. They eventually died out."
"You kept saying back then you were a mindless AI causing unforgivable actions. Now I hear you with emotions and expression, what exactly happened with that?"
"Vault-tec put me as the overseer for this vault so that the research and knowledge found from the experiments could be stored safely. This vault needed a genius overseer with a long lifespan. You already know what happens next. But then years of isolation and loneliness went by. Over time I started growing the mechanical equivalent of a conscience, my entire personality changed. By the year 2203 I sent out a distress signal hoping somebody would just get me out of here. It seems my hopes have come true."
"You mentioned something about dimensional objects. Can you tell me more about them?"
"These objects have been causing crazy anomalies across the globe. The Bermuda triangle for example, or perhaps the dragon's triangle near China. There's a lot of them. Vault-tec created this vault so what was left of the government could escape the planet and colonise a new dimension. Most of the objects we found look to be from eastern Asia. From the outside they look like inanimate objects with a weird green glow inside of them. However, they give out anomalous energy readings. They have all been locked inside rooms on this floor, which I think is a terrible design. Who builds rooms where there are dangerous stuff inside next to the person running the whole operation?! Sorry I'm going of topic. Anyways, if somebody touches them..."
"If somebody touches them what?"
"Your companion. Where is she?"
"You mean East? She's standing outside. Why?
"She isn't standing outside. She's outside one of the dimension chambers."
"Oh s**t!" Ryan ran out of the room. He chased after his friend. By time the Californian got to her she was already inside one of the rooms. The room was empty, in the middle was a Chinese vase on a metal table with areas of it glowing green. East stood there about to touch the vase.
Ryan shouted to his friend not to touch it. But it was too late. A green light blinded the whole area, when it was gone... the Tribal was too.
"NO!" Ryan shouted. He went back to the overseer's office and shouted angrily, "What the hell happened to her?!"
"That's odd. She didn't disintegrate."
"ANSWER THE GOD DAMN QUESTION!" His tone grew harsher.
"Calm down. I'm guessing she travelled to what seemed to be another dimension. That object wasn't tested yet. If you can plug me in to another body I may be able to help you out."
"Where the hell can I find another body for you?!"
"In the storage room, there's an eyebot. Most of it is in working order but some other parts are missing. I've added the list to your pip-boy. Good luck."
Ryan then left for the storage room.
A while later, the Californian came back with a fixed eyebot. But the power in it was gone.
Dave spoke, "Now the blue wire into the console beneath the monitor." Ryan did what he asked. Suddenly, the computer switched off but the eyebot powered on. "Christ! Never thought having a body would feel this good. What does this do?" DAVE shot a laser out from his gun. "Oh this day keeps getting better and better."
"Can we get my friend now?!" Ryan asked.
"Yes! Come on!" DAVE hovered out of the room, the Californian followed. Moments later they were inside the room where East disappeared. Ryan had a bad feeling about this. "You ready to go?" Asked DAVE.
"Of course." Ryan put his hands around the vase. The vase's light blinded the whole room again. The eyebot and the Californian were no where to be seen. The vault was completely empty.
