The station was packed to the brim with muggles, each rushing about attempting to catch their trains. Through the pandemonium of Kings Cross Station emerged a short boy of about eleven, his wind blown hair askew, glasses nearly falling off his face, and a large cloak obscuring his form from passersby's. Yet it was clear that this boy was excited, as evidenced by the bounce in his step as he headed towards the end of platform nine. An elderly couple followed him towing what could be assumed to contain the boys luggage.

Upon their arrival at platform nine, the boy turns to the elderly couple, takes his trolley and tilts his head in question. As soon as they nodded the boy was off. Running like there was some malicious creature on his tail. This generated more stares, which culminated into disbelief as he disappeared from view. The strangers watching shook their heads in disbelief and when they could not see the elderly couple they dismissed the whole thing as a figment of their imagination.

On the other side of the platform, James was staring up in bewildered amazement. The station was just so busy, several families stood by the train saying goodbye to their children. A little ways to the side he spied an unhappy family of three wishing their child luck, close to them a dark looking family seemed to be lecturing their eldest as the youngest hugged him. There was a girl with the brightest red hair he'd ever seen, as she turned in his direction a radiant smile lit up her face. Thinking it was for him he puffs up his chest and fixes a crooked grin on his face. As another boy, walks past him looking sullen, waving at her he deflates.

Upon seeing his deflation his parent steer him towards the train al the while speaking their goodbyes, and wishing him well. "Remember Gryffindor," his father whispered to him, when his wife was out of earshot. Boarding the train after waving goodbye to his parents he struggled to find an empty compartment, when at last he found one with a sleeping boy he entered. It wasn't long before the compartments door was opened and a timid boy poked his head in and asked if it was alright to sit in there, with them. After being gestured in he sat next to the sleeping boy opposite James. The next to happen upon their compartment was the same dark haired boy who he'd seen getting lectured by his parents. "Is it alright if I sit here?" he asked.

"Sure" and as he plopped down beside James, the door to the compartment opened once more. This time the red head, and the sullen boy entered, "Come on Sev! It's the only place with spare seats"

"Yeah sure" he muttered under his breath. Entering the compartment they took their seats.

Things were starting to become awkward, within the compartment of misfits, when James turns to the dark haired boy, "I'm James, James Potter"

"Sirius" he stuck out his hand

"Peter" the small mousy timid boy piped up. It was here that the sleeping boy let out a quiet snore and shifted slightly toward the window. It was at this point that the beautiful red head decided to introduce her self and her companion. "I'm Lily, and he's Severus" whilst he shot her a dark look not wanting to be associated with whom he had assumed to be bumbling fools. Silence once again fell upon the compartment.

Once they had been in the compartment for several moments, a soft chatter emerged between Lily and Severus. However when James heard Severus mention how Lily had better be in Slytherin and her questioning response he thought he had better interrupt. "Who wants to be in Slytherin? I think I'd leave, wouldn't you?" he turned to Sirius.

"My whole family have been in Slytherin" he replied.

"Blimey, and I thought you were alright!" Sirius grins

"Maybe I'll break tradition. Where are you heading, if you've got the choice?" lifting what could be assumed to be an invisible sword James replies "Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart! Like my dad." Upon hearing this statement Severus scoffs, turning to him James asks if he had a problem with that. Turning his nose up and sneering at him "No, if you'd rather be brawny than brainy…"

"Where're you hoping to go, seeing as you are neither?" Sirius interrupted. As James erupted with laughter Lily stood up and pulling Severus with her exited the compartment. Slamming the door behind her. At the sound of the door slamming shut, the boy stirred from his slumber and seeing the faces, he immediately woke up.

In only a few hours the boys in that compartment would be sorted together, and become closer than brothers. They would go on to become the notorious group known as the marauders, who would be spoken about for generations to come but for now they were just a group of boys enjoying the train ride to the rest of their lives.
