UA High School, Classroom 1-A- Izuku Midoriya contently sits at his desk, making sketches in his notebook. He mutters to himself but the words are mostly unintelligible.
He remains oblivious to all the going-ons around him, including Mina Ashido walking up to his desk and leaning down in front of him.
Mina: Hey Midoriya! What's up?
Startled, Izuku shoots back and nearly falls out of his chair.
Izuku: Aaaah!
He looks up to see Mina smiling cheerily at him.
Izuku: Oh, h-hi A-Ashido.
Mina: Scared you, didn't I? Sorry about that.
He smiles back.
Izuku: I-it's fine. Y-you just surprised me. T-that's all.
Curious, she looks down at his notebook.
Mina: So, what'chu doing?
Izuku hands her the notebook.
Izuku: Oh i-it's nothing. I was just seeing if I could make any changes to my costume.
She looks at the illustrations of Midoriya's costume. Annotated with various notes such as "add arm-braces" and "more secure kneepads" as well as "iron soles for boots." Circled in red marker are the words "Shoot Style."
Izuku: See?
Mina then looks at him, awe-struck.
Izuku: That's so cool Midoriya!
She looks back at the sketches, where something catches her eye.
Mina: It really looks like you've thought of-
The pink-skinned girl pauses when she notices another note: "Remove mask."
Mina: What's this?
Izuku leans over.
Izuku: Oh, that… I-I was thinking about removing my mask. I-I wasn't really using it s-so there's not much of a point in me keeping it.
Mina interrupts him, incredulous to his remarks.
Mina: Are you kidding me? That's like, the most important part of a hero's costume!
Izuku looks at her with a mixture of confusion and panic on his face.
Izuku: The m-mask?
Mina: Yeah!
She then shrouds herself in her arms like she was wearing an invisible cape, imitating a caped crusader.
Mina: Heroes wear masks so they can hide their identities, right? To protect those close to them and things like that. But the mask becomes their identity instead. Like symbols!
Izuku: Symbols?
Mina: Yeah! Masks help us focus on what the hero represents rather than the person underneath.
The green haired boy pauses for thought.
Izuku: I-I guess you're right…
He thinks back to when he was a child, watching the news footage of All Might on his computer.
Izuku: B-but All Might doesn't wear a mask. He saves the day and smiles so the whole world can see. I thought that, maybe I could be like that, someone who's just an ordinary guy under the costume who tries to do the right thing.
He then remembers choosing 'Deku' as his hero name as well as the letter he received from Kota Izumi whilst in the hospital.
Izuku: Someone everyone can look up to and aspire to be no matter who they are.
Mina kneels down.
Mina: Huh, I never thought of it like that. I know how you feel too.
Izuku tilts his head in confusion.
Izuku: Y-you do?
She smiles.
Mina: Of course.
She then pouts slightly.
Mina: I mean, look at me. I'm a girl with pink skin and horns. It's hard not standing out in the crowd. People are always looking at me when they pass me by. Most of the time it's harmless but it gets to me sometimes.
The look on her face then becomes more determined.
Mina: But it's who I am and I'm not ashamed of it. I'm Pinky! The colourful hero!
Perplexed, Izuku raises an eyebrow.
Izuku: If that's the case, why do you wear a mask?
Mina laughs energetically.
Mina: Hey, masks can be stylish too! Don't you know anything about fashion?
Izuku frets nervously.
Izuku: W-well… I thought it protected your eyes from any splashback from your quirk.
Mina looks at him, baffled.
Mina: Come on Midoriya, you know my skin's acid-resistant. You were asking me all those questions, remember?
At a loss, Izuku rubs the back of his head.
Izuku: S-so you don't wear that turquoise and purple body suit to distract your opponent as you m-move around them?
Mina playfully smirks at him.
Mina: What? You don't like my colour scheme?
Izuku shakes his hands out in defence.
Izuku: N-no! I-I mean, i-it looks good on you! T-that is to say you look n-nice! N-not in a- w-well-
Mina laughs as Izuku becomes flustered with embarrassment.
End.
Thanks for reading! I wrote this partly for IzuMina Week 2020 but also because I hadn't written about these characters in a while. Please leave a review if you enjoyed and check out my other stories.
