Chapter 1: A Wonderful Surprise
Featherkit sat outside of the huge nursery and watched the Warrior Apprentices train.
"Whatcha doing Featherkit?" Featherkit's best friend, Leopardkit, asked.
"I'm watching the Warrior Apprentices train." Featherkit meowed. "That's what I'm going to be someday."
"But she-cats can't be Warriors!" Leopardkit meowed. "That's against the Warrior Code!"
"I don't care!" Featherkit meowed. "I want to be a warrior with you."
"I would like that." Leopardkit meowed with a sigh.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join beneath the highrock for a clan meeting!" The clan leader, Beechstar, yowled. Kits streamed out of the nursery, as well as their mothers. Featherkit's mother, Ivysong, came out last.
"It's a big day for you." Ivysong meowed. Featherkit looked at her, confused. What did she mean, " It was a big day"? Featherkit thought.
"What do you mean?" Leopardkit asked Ivysong.
"You'll see." Ivysong meowed and joined the group of cats gathering around Beechstar.
"Tornkit, you will now be known as Tornpaw. You will be a Queen Apprentice, so all the queens will mentor you." Beechstar meowed. Tornpaw dipped her head. Now Featherkit understood what was happening. The kits were becoming apprentices!"Leopardkit, you will now be known as Leopardpaw. Your mentor will be Jaggedsting." Featherkit watched intently as Leopardpaw and Jaggedsting touched noses. "Whitekit, you will now be known as Whitepaw. Your mentor will be Heavysun. Sunkit, you will now be known as Sunpaw. Your mentor will be Harespirit. Cloudkit, you will now be known as Cloudpaw. Your mentor will be Stagsplash. Dovekit you will now be known as Dovepaw. Your mentor will be the queens. Curlkit, you will now be known as Curlpaw. Your mentor will be Ravenspeck. And finally, Featherkit." Featherkit couldn't keep herself from bouncing all the way to Beechstar. She heard her mother's purr of amusement as Featherkit almost knocked Shellpuddle over.
"Featherkit, you will now be known as Featherpaw." Beechstar meowed. "Your mentor will be the-"
"Let me stop you right there." Featherpaw meowed. "I want to be a Warrior Apprentice." The cats in the camp gasped.
"You can't. It is against the warrior- " Beechstar started to meow.
"Actually, she can," Pearspark meowed. "It is tradition that once every one hundered moons, a she-cat can become a Warrior Apprentice. I don't think you want to break tradition." Featherpaw didn't believe that he was serious. She gave him a questioning glance. "I'm not joking." He reassured her. "Beachstar, I think she needs a mentor."
"Very well. Whitespot!"
"Yes, Beechstar?" A black cat with white spots looked at Beechstar from the middle of the crowd.
"You will mentor this apprentice." Beechstar meowed. Whitespot nodded. Fetherpaw padded over to him and they touched noses. Featherpaw saw a glimmer of respect in his eyes. Featherpaw was so happy that she was a Warrior Apprentice!
"I'm so happy for you!" Ivysong meowed as she approached Featherpaw.
"I know! I can't wait to start training!" Featherpaw meowed excitedly.
"Well, first you have to find a nest." Whitespot meowed as he came up behind her.
"Let's go!" Featherpaw meowed and ran to the Warrior Apprentices' den.
