Winter

Little girl, lost at sea

An ocean of people awaiting

She struggles and hides and builds up her walls

Only harbors thoughts of escaping

Her mother is cold as snow on the bank

And soon her words are not only distant

But a lifetime away

So she grows up a little faster each day

and travels into the darkness

Inviting, exciting

The darkness drapes over her body

A blanket of stars

And she can't help but wonder

Creating, skating

Over glass and moonstone

But the sun always rises

And the brightening skies

Open her eyes

To see what is really there

Her sisters are starving, her father is carving

His own grave out of the dirt

oh, how it hurt

To be frozen in place and time

So she straightened her shoulders

She molded her spine

To create a girl who wouldn't splinter under the weight of the world

Pressed on her heart, forced on her mind

Scooped out her insides and lined them with iron

She gave and gave until nothing was left

But she lived

Bare branches, unforgiving wind, and foggy skies

She lived under secrets and lies

Harsh light, numb cheeks, and skin the color of cream

She's pulling at the seams

Trying to create a tapestry out of rags

But she's running out of time

Time is a fickle thing, full of loops and curves

Missed opportunities

Hollow hope and distractions, if only to cope

One day, she stops

And stares at the snow on ground

Her fragile footsteps

The silence that speaks and groans

She hasn't had the will to paint for so long

If she could paint her life

She thinks she'd name it

"Beauty and the Beast" after the tale Nesta had loved

For she is the beast prowling in the forest of beauty

There's a wolf howling in her soul

And she can feel the clanking of her bones

It wants to trample, and break, and scorch, and take

Anything but give

She has given so much

She just wants to live
