Corey and Baron stood far enough away where no one suspected anything, yet close enough to keep an eye on everything. It was over now. The final people paid their final respect and left. Baron heard Corey sigh. Corey started walking towards the now empty place with Baron following behind.
Baron hadn't known her at all. Corey had mentioned her over the years. She was the one that got away. He always talked warmly about the golden blonde woman with the pale grey eyes. Rosa. The love of his life. And now she was lying in the cold ground. There had just been held a funeral for her, and now Corey was looking at her tombstone with her name on it.
"Beloved wife."
"How fucking dare he put that on her stone?" Corey snarled. "He didn't love her. Not like I did. He's the fucking reason she's down there."
Baron knew it was a suicide. He didn't know why though. He knew Rosa had somehow made her way back into Corey's life not too long ago, and now she was gone.
"I'm just as guilty as him," Corey said.
Corey started crying. Baron put his arm around his best friend to comfort him.
"Tell me what happened," Baron said.
"This is my fault," Corey said.
"No, it's not. Deep inside you know that," Baron said. "Tell me what happened between the two of you. You'll feel better once it's off your chest."
Corey took a deep breath and continued staring at her name on the stone. That was all there was left of her now. Her name on a stone. It wasn't fair.
"I sent her back to him," Corey said.
"She chose to go," Baron said.
"No, I made her go," Corey said. "This is all my fucking fault, Baron. I might not have been the one hurting her everyday like he did but I hit her with the final blow. I pushed her over the edge."
Baron squeezed Corey's shoulder. He really wanted Corey to get it all out in the open. He knew Corey had a tendency of bottling everything up inside until one day he couldn't take it anymore, and he would explode. Baron didn't want to see his best friend explode over this. The explosion would be too big and cause too much damage.
"Tell me," Baron said softly.
"She was the love of my life," Corey said. "But I was obsessed with wrestling and she wanted to be a journalist. Our dreams took us to different states. We agreed to split up. We both knew that if fate would have it, we would find each other again."
"That's a beautiful thought," Baron said.
"And fate would have it. She found me. And I fucking blew it," Corey said.
