Chapter 1: Insensible
In life, Rey discovered, there were those that were smart, and those that were oblivious and labeled as idiots. She'd always considered herself smart. She caught hints that were thrown at her most of the time, and was even able to drop hints to others, without being too forceful. She'd lived her life that way. She was a straight person and would always tell it like it was, but there were times where she needed to sugar coat things, too. This led her to be friends with Poe, Finn and Rose. She'd made friends with Poe first and Poe had introduced her to Rose and Finn, who were dating for a little over two years. Poe had an on and off relationship with a girl named Zorii that she'd met a few times. Zorii and her had gotten along just fine, but anytime Poe was trying to be Poe, Zorii was having nothing of it.
Things had been peaceful since she'd known the group. She'd settled into her place of work, which was a parts store owned by Poe's friend, Luke. She'd gotten along just fine there and was making it pretty well, too. She'd fallen into a routine with the gang, too. Something simple, yet calming. Work, shower, movie or fun time with the friends.
And tonight was one of those nights. It was movie night. Rey had off today, so it was a lot easier for her to go to the movie and make it on time. She'd gotten word that one of Poe's family members was in town for the month. Rose said he was Poe's cousin. A distant cousin. Like so distant that they might as well not even be related. Rey didn't really mind. Anyone related to Poe must have been pretty decent, right?
She walked up to the theater and wondered where everyone was. Looking down at her phone, she saw that she was a half hour early and that she had missed messages from Finn and Rose. When she opened her messages, she frowned. Apparently, Rose was sick and Finn went over to her house to tend to her. She sent a quick text back and waited for Poe and the cousin to show up. She looked around and sighed as she scanned the movies that were currently playing. All they had were horror and rom-coms. She wasn't in the mood for either. Actually, she wasn't in the mood to even be there... Her boyfriend had broken up with her a few weeks ago and now he was harassing her. She really just wanted the cheating loser to back off. But she knew there would be no chance of that happening.
"Hey!" Poe said from behind, making Rey jump and haul off and punch Poe in the jaw. Taken a bit aback at the action, Poe stumbled backwards, nursing his jaw with a small chuckle.
"Oh, Poe! I'm sorry!" Rey said as she scrambled to her friend to assess the damage she'd caused.
Poe just kept laughing as he shook his head. "Your punches still hurt, Rey. Good aim though."
Rey blushed and huffed at him. "Well, I've told you about sneaking up behind me..."
Poe laughed again and shrugged. "Rey, this is Ben, my cousin."
Rey's attention then shifted to the man that was standing there with them. She realized she had been watched the whole time assaulting said man's cousin and her cheeks burned from embarrassment. Her eyes nervously raked over the man standing a bit behind Poe. He was tall. And broad. His jawline was strong and sharp. His eyes were dark to match his just-above-the-shoulder hair. He stood with his arms crossed over his broad and muscular chest, wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and dark blue jeans with black boots. He looked nice. Not a thing like Poe, but he looked attractive enough. "Uh... nice to meet you, Ben."
Ben nodded after a moment of taking in the woman's appearance, too. She was shorter than him, naturally, and she wore a nice blue button up shirt with skinny jeans and tan boots. Her brown hair was pulled back into three buns and she wore minimal makeup. Quite a difference between most of the women he'd met before, who were dolled up beyond help. Still, he remained silent as he turned his sight over to the movies. "What movie are we seeing?" Ben asked.
Rey's breath hitched a moment as she heard his voice. It was deep, yet smooth like honey. Warm, yet cold at the same time. She decided that she liked him already, even if he was standoffish. She knew he had a wall higher than high that she'd have to get past, but she decided that for now, she wouldn't push him. She was comfortable just getting to know who he was. She was always looking to make new friends. Poe's voice interrupted her thoughts as he addressed Ben. "Well... we originally were going to see the rom-com, which is what we have tickets for..."
Ben snorted his displeasure. "I knew coming to a movie with you was a bad idea..."
"Hey! It was Rose's idea; not mine."
"But you went along with it," Rey interjected, her own arms crossing. "It seems you're outnumbered."
Ben cast a short-lived glance over at Rey before returning his sight to the movies. "Well... there's no sense in spending more money, right? We might as well go watch it since it's already paid for..." Poe defended with a sigh.
Rey sighed and shrugged as she followed Poe to go get the tickets. Ben hesitantly followed as well. Once they got their tickets, they went on in, got snacks and drinks and made their way to the theater. Poe chose his aisle seat as usual and Ben sat a seat away from him, leaving Rey to take the middle. She sat down in the middle of the two boys with the large tub of popcorn she was in charge of and sighed at the previews. She hated the pre-move ads. They were always playing a bunch of useless Hollywood trivia and movie things that she just found them boring. Apparently, Ben was annoyed with them, too, as he grabbed a handful of popcorn, set it in his lap and leaned back with a sigh, trying to get comfortable.
"So, how long are you down for this time?" Poe asked, not making eye contact with his cousin.
Ben shrugged in his seat. "Probably a month..."
"Ah. You got a place to stay?"
Ben remained silent as he shrugged. "Figured I'd get a hotel."
Poe thought about it for a moment. "Well... you're welcome to stay with us."
Ben glanced over at him. "Us?"
Rey shrugged this time. "We're roommates. But this idiot stays gone most of the time, trying to woo Zorii."
Poe's cousin snickered. "Ah... Zorii... Still?"
"Shut up, man! At least I have a love interest!"
Ben shrugged quietly. "No one worthy yet to be interested in."
"Amen!" Rey said as she stuffed her mouth full of popcorn.
Poe grinned at the two and shrugged to himself. "Anyway... the offer is there. There's three bedrooms. We got an extra and plenty of space. I'm gone most of the time-"
"And I'm usually at work or in my room anyway," Rey finished as she stuffed more popcorn in her mouth, watching another horrific preview. "So many stupid movies coming out," she grumbled to herself.
"Choice is yours, man."
Ben nodded quietly. "I'll think about it." He glanced over at Rey before grabbing more popcorn and settling in. Another preview came on and it was more dumb than the first one. A girl experiences a bad breakup, a boy is there to help her through it, they get together, families are opposed. Rey rolls her eyes. "How many more times are they going to make a Romeo and Juliet themed movie?" Ben sighed as he ate some more popcorn.
Rey glanced over at him and let her lips tug into a grin. "My thoughts exactly."
Ben glanced over at her for a moment, eyes locking for what seemed like forever, but was actually three seconds, and looked away with a grin. This night just got a heck of a lot more interesting. He finally had someone that liked to complain about movies as much as he did.
Finally, the movie started. They didn't make it fifteen minutes into the movie before Rey scoffed. "Betcha that's the wicked stepmother bent on breaking them up," she whispered.
Ben kept silent as he watched the garbage that was before him. "And the sister that claims to support them, while secretly trying to steal the lead guy."
Rey grinned. This was fun. Together, they said, "And the best friend that's hopelessly in love with the lead girl." They looked at each other and shared a grin, Rey laughing softly for a moment. Ben's sight returned to the movie.
"Cut it out, guys!" Poe hissed in a strained whisper, though they both could tell he was finding amusement in their exchanges.
Rey laughed softly and Ben just grinned. Ben then leaned closer to Rey to speak over to Poe quietly. "Worried we'll spoil it for you, Dameron?"
Poe scoffed as Rey blushed at the closeness. "Hardly."
Ben noticed Rey's rigid form and realized what he'd done. "Sorry," he said softly so only she could hear.
Rey gave him a small smile. "Sorry. Bubble," she laughed quietly, attempting to brush it off.
Ben nodded his understanding. "Bubbles are important." She looked over at him and saw mirth in his eyes as he cut his eyes over to her. She lightly punched his arm with a smirk, earning a full on grin from Ben.
"Cut it out, lovebirds," Poe said as he grabbed more popcorn.
Rey blushed again and Ben rolled his eyes. They watched the majority of the movie in silence before a particular scene came up where they professed their love for each other. A typical cliche movie moment. She heard Ben scoff at the confession and plans of engagement. She took the opportunity to speak what she thought. "So unrealistic..."
Ben grabbed more popcorn with a tut of his tongue. "Completely unreasonable..."
"They've known each other for, what, a week?"
"Yeah, and they've supposedly known they've loved each other from the get-go?" He rolled his eyes.
Rey smiled at him. This was so much fun having someone to pick at a movie with. She was the friend that always got in trouble for being able to call it. Everyone got annoyed with her for being able to guess what would happen. She was wondering if Ben was the same way...
Shortly after that scene, the movie ended with a typical happily ever after thing and credits started to roll. Poe stood and sighed with a smirk. "That was a good movie."
Rey rolled her eyes, as did Ben. "If you're into predictable love stories," Rey said as she stood as well. Her phone clattered to the ground and Ben retrieved it before standing as well. He handed it back to her silently and Rey smiled at him. "Thanks, Ben."
Ben nodded and looked to Poe, who was staring at them with a knowing grin. "Wipe that look off of your face, Dameron."
Rey looked at Poe then and noticed the look she hated. "Don't you look like that! Every time you have that look, you get us in trouble. Don't even think about it!"
Poe snickered and put his hands up defensively. "All right, all right. Who's hungry?"
They left the theater and went out to eat, Rey sitting across from Poe and Ben as she scanned the menu. Ben didn't really take anything to eat, but he went because Poe insisted and because Poe was his only ride. Poe ordered the food and Rey ordered hers. They sat in silence as Rey looked down at her phone quietly. "You two seem to have gotten along tonight," Poe commented.
Rey's attention snapped up to look at her roommate, glaring daggers at the man, knowing full well what he was trying to do. "Ben's nice."
"She's ok," Ben agreed as they exchanged a glance and looked away.
Poe cleared his throat and stood from his seat. "Well... I'm heading to the bathroom."
Rey gave him a glare, as did Ben, who knew what he was doing. Once Poe was out of earshot, Rey sighed and looked at Ben. "You know he's trying to-"
"Yep," Ben said, as annoyed as she was.
"Do we put off that air-"
"Nope."
"Should we mess with him?" she teased with a grin.
Ben looked at her, as if contemplating it. After a minute, he shrugged. "He'd never let it go."
Rey shrugged with a smirk. "It would be worth it. I mean, he's still alive, isn't he?"
Ben scoffed. "Define alive..."
"I haven't killed him yet, and I live with him."
Ben nodded his head. "What do you have in mind?"
Rey gave him a grin. She scooted over in the seat and nodded her head. Ben quirked a brow before moving seats to go sit next to her. He flopped his arm around the back of the booth, attempting to get comfortable and glanced over at her. "Now just look like we've been having a pleasant conversation."
Ben quirked a brow at her again. "Have we not?"
She laughed softly and shrugged. "Whole night's been pleasant."
He thought for a moment and nodded his agreement. Before he could say another word, Poe returned and looked at the two incredulously. "Uhhh... what did I miss?"
Ben looked up at his cousin. "Nothing, why?"
Poe pointed at them. "Because... you're sitting next to her... with your arm around the booth... like a couple...?"
Rey and Ben shrugged in unison. "I'm more comfortable over here."
Poe's jaw dropped as he took his seat and just studied the two. "I'm so lost..."
Ben and Rey exchanged a glance and Rey started to laugh as Ben dropped his arm. "We're just messing with you, Poe."
This, in turn, confused Poe even more as he grabbed at his hair in confusion. "What-"
"You like to make up things that aren't there, so Rey got the idea to mess with you. Apparently, it worked."
Rey and Ben high-fived. Their food came and they ate in a comfortable silence. Ben never got up from his seat except when they left. And she didn't tell him that getting him to sit next to her wasn't just to mess with Poe; but, rather, because she enjoyed sitting next to him.
