Chapter 1: Jaspers POV
Edward, Emmett and I had just left the house to go on a little over night hunting trip. Carlisle and Esme have gone a few days before. They wanted the school week to be over with first before we can have our fun.
Emmett had groaned and moaned about that being unfair since we have been in high school so many times. A few days wouldn't hurt to miss. But Carlisle and especially Esme thought school was very important. Edward and I didn't care about finishing the week out, it gave us something to look forward too. But here its Friday night, and we are ready for our fun.
As we were taking our time walking through the forest, Emmett and Edward were talking about what animals they wanted to get and eat. Of course, Emmett's response didn't surprise me.
"I want to find the biggest, strongest, toughest Grizzly Bear. I want to wrestle with it, tease it a bit and then snap its neck and have my dinner. Then for dessert, I'll add a mountain lion and do the same thing with it." Emmett told Edward.
I shuddered at the thought of the poor animal that Emmett will find. I almost felt sorry for it.
"Emmett, don't be so violent and play with your food. You heard what Esme and Carlisle said. Don't tease the animals and play with them. Just do your job and try not to get into any trouble." Edward said.
Emmett gave a very dramatic sigh. "If we can't hunt and have fun, what's the point in hunting? I want to wrestle a bear and make it mad. Then kill it. "
Edward and I both winced when Emmett said that.
"It's not nice to tease Emmett. Esme would faint, if it is possible, if she saw you wrestle with a full, grown, Grizzly Bear. That goes for a mountain lion too." I scolded him.
Emmett huffed.
"I smell a herd of Elk a couple of miles north - let's go." Edward said.
We took off running; Edward leading the way. Emmett was sending off annoying waves towards me because we weren't hunting a mountain lion or a bear.
As I was running past him, I playfully shoved him off towards one of the trees. Knowing full well he can't get hurt.
Emmett quickly went flying into one of the tree trunks and left a big dent in it. Not to mention shaking the tree and startling a few birds in it.
I laughed like an idiot at Emmett's shocked face. Then he smirked at me and he quickly tried to shove me into the tree that was next to me.
I easily dodged him with my military training and flew past him. Emmett was running at me so quickly that when I was jumping in the air, he easily grabbed my leg and I immediately fell to the ground making a loud thud and I winced. I should have seen that coming.
Edward finally turned around to see what all the noise was about. When he saw me and Emmett wrestling on the ground, he just rolled his eyes.
"With you two idiots, the elk are going to get even further away. I'm hungry and I want to eat without having to work too hard for it." Edward said.
Emmett and I continued to ignore him, pretending we didn't hear him.
"Why did you attack me like that?" Emmett asked with a smirk.
He had me pinned down so he was on top of me. With my arms above my head, I grinned at him.
"I attacked you like that because I got annoyed at you sending me annoying waves that you couldn't wrestle a bear or a mountain lion. I thought I'd get even." I said.
I quickly flipped him over and I was on top of him. He was grinning like an idiot.
"Let's go, I'm hungry. I want that elk that Edward smelled. I suppose it will have to do for the time being." Emmett said.
I got off of Emmett and we followed Edward towards the heard of elk.
After we had our fill, I suddenly came to a halt and told the others to be quiet. Emmett looked at me confused and Edward had a concerned look on his face.
"It's coming from that way, the sound. I can hear a faint heartbeat and smell blood. Strangely, I don't feel I need to attack whatever this is we hear and smell." I added.
"Let's go check it out. I smell the blood and hear the heartbeat too. Somebody could be hurt." Edward said.
We all agreed and took off towards the sound of the heartbeat. It didn't take long to find what we were looking for.
The sight broke my unbeating heart. A little girl no more than seven or eight years old was curled up in a tight ball. She had tucked herself into the bushes so she can have some form of shelter. She had a thin blanket wrapped around her and she was clutching onto what look liked a stuff animal of some sort.
Very carefully, I walked toward the little girl. Her whispering and sounds of pain broke my heart and I can feel what she is feeling. Scared, hurting, maybe some anxiety.
She didn't see me at first when I knelt down to be at her level. I carefully put my hand on her shoulder and she yelped in surprise. She tried to move further into the bushes, but I put a gentle, but firm grip on her shoulder.
"It's okay Darlin, I'm not going to hurt you. I came to help you. Can you tell me your name little one?" I asked gently.
"Ava." She whispered.
"That's a beautiful name Darlin. Can I ask you some questions?" I asked.
Ava slowly shook her head yes.
"Can you tell me what happen to you? I want to help you. You look like you're hurting; my father is a very good doctor and he can fix you up. My brother over here is training to be a doctor too. Can he come and take a look at you? I'll be with you the whole time. You can trust us." I told her gently.
Ava slowly shook her head yes. Edward came over to see what was going on. Emmett stood quietly in the background. Not wanting to scare this poor little girl even more.
Edward and I took a quick glance at the little girl to see what kind of injuries she has. From what I can tell, she had a big cut on her leg that will need stitches and cleaning. She had a nice cut in her lip they will also need stitches. She had a cut on her forehead that will need stitches as well. She had a couple of cuts on her face, but didn't look too bad. She was clutching her arm. Holding it as if it was sore or broken. Her leg looked like it could be broken too. This poor child has been through a lot.
I sighed and looked at Edward. I mentally asked if he saw everything I did. He shook his head yes.
"Jasper, can you carefully sit Ava up into a sitting position? You can lean her against your chest so that she is facing me. I want to check her leg and arm to see if it is broken." Edward told me.
I nodded my head yes.
"Hey Darlin, do you mind if I sit you up a little bit so Edward can take a look at you. He is training to be a doctor like our dad." I told her.
Ava must have trusted us because she allowed me to position her to where she was sitting up and her back was leaning across my chest. Edward had made sure her blanket was still covering her.
"Emmett, can you come over here please. I need your help and keep Ava calm while you check her out okay?" Edward asked.
Happy with something to do to help, Emmett came over slowly so he wouldn't startle Ava. He knelt down so he can be at her level like the rest of us.
"Hey squirt, my name is Emmett. I'm gonna help out this bossy one by the name of Edward. Doesn't he seem bossy to you?" Emmett asked.
Ava giggles a little bit and then whimpers. Poor Emmett looked crushed at the thought of causing her more pain.
"What's wrong Darlin? What hurts?" I asked.
"My side hurts too when I try to move." Ava whimpered.
It sounds like she might have some broken ribs too.
"Do you mind if Edward checks you out?" I asked.
Ava slowly shakes her head yes.
"Jasper, why don't you move Ava as gently as you can so she is leaning against your chest. Emmett come on over here and help Jasper out." Edward said.
"Bossy isn't he kiddo? He likes to boss people around because he is in medical school. He trains with dad and it's worse when he bosses Jasper and I at the hospital." Emmett said.
Emmett has moved over to wear Jasper and Ava were. Ava giggles at Emmett's remark and then whimpers while clutching her side.
"Is that where you're hurting little one?" Edward asked.
"Yes Sir." Ava whimpers.
"We will take a look at it in a minute. Let's get you settled with Jasper and then I'll do a few tests." Edward said.
Ava shakes her head. I sit on the ground where I am leaving against the bush. The bush didn't bother me one bit. I made myself comfortable while Edward and Emmett got Ava comfortable.
"Don't move her legs to much Emmett. We don't want to hurt her!" Edward said panicking.
"See kiddo? Bossy, I'm telling you. Are you doing okay?" Emmett asked her.
Ava shakes her head yes and mumbles a "Yes sir."
Edward had gotten Ava into a sitting position to where she was against my chest. Emmett had gently placed her legs back down. And then patted her gently.
Emmett covered Ava back up and even made sure she had her stuff dog that I didn't even realize she had. Emmett tucked her stuff dog under Ava's arm. Emmett really was a gentle giant.
"Thank you, Emmett." Ava said.
"Your welcome kiddo. I figured you will want him." Emmett said.
"Okay Ava, I'm going to do a few tests on your leg and then your arm. I apologize in advance for hurting you. I don't mean too. Try and bear with me okay little one?" Edward said.
"Okay." Ava said.
"I'm going to check your leg first to see if it is broken. I'm going to move it first to the right, then the left, and then try and bend it. I want you to hold Jasper's and Emmett's hand." Edward said.
I tried to send calm, relaxing waves toward Ava, but she was getting worked up and her heart was starting to speed up.
Emmett picked up Ava's hand and she clutched it and then I picked up her other hand and she clutched it too. I rubbed soothing circles with my thumb on her hand.
"Okay Ava, I'm going to lift your leg and move it slowly towards me, okay? I want to see if it can move. On the count of three, I'm going to gently lift your leg and move it towards me. Hold Jasper and Emmett's hand as tight as you can. It's okay to cry and be afraid. I'll be as gentle as I can." Edward said.
Holding our hands with all her might, Edward told Ava to take a deep breath and slowly let it out. I felt her chest rise up and down. Her breath started to get shaky when she saw that Edward was getting ready to do the first test.
"It's okay Darlin. Listen to Edward. It's okay to cry and be scared. Emmett and I are with you. Just hold our hands. Look away if you have to." I told her.
Ava whimpers and turns her head away towards Emmett. Emmett was striking her hair in a comforting manner.
"Okay little one. I'm going to move your leg towards Emmett. On the count of three. One. Two. Three." Edward said.
Ava whimpered as Edward ever so slightly moved her leg towards Emmett.
"Can you move it by yourself or am I doing all the work?" Edward asked gently.
"I, I can't move it. It hurts too much." Ava whimpered.
"It's okay little one. You're doing great. I'm going to move it towards me now. Are you ready?" Edward asked.
Ava shakes her head no. But, with Emmett comforting her, and me trying to send calming waves towards her, she relaxed just the tiniest bit.
"Are you ready? On the count of three again. One. Two. Three." Edward gently moves her leg towards him this time and she starts to cry softly.
"Okay sweetheart, I have one more test to try on your leg. Then we will move to look at your arm. Okay? Are you ready? I'm going to try and bend your leg towards you. And if you can't bend it all the way, I'm guessing your leg might be broken. Are you ready?" Edward asked.
Ava shakes her head and said "Yes Sir," again.
This made Emmett chuckle.
Ava clutched our hands and I was afraid she was going to break those too, with the way she was holding our hands too.
Edward slowly started to bend her leg towards Ava. Ava started to cry again when Edward moved it. Then he slowly put her leg back down.
"I think it is safe to say that your leg is broken little one. You did so good with those tests. I appreciate you not trying to kick me." Edward told her.
"I have one more set of tests I want to try. It's on your arm. The arm Jasper is holding your hand. Can I do one more test on you?" Edward said.
Ava looked at me for permission and I shook my head yes. Edward knelt down next to Ava and gently took her arm.
"I'm going to do the same thing with your arm as I did your leg. Hold Emmett's hand still and Jasper will help keep you calm. Okay little one? Are you ready?" Edward asked.
Ava nods her head once more and Edward counts you three. He tells Ava he is going to move her arm towards Emmett first.
Ever so slowly, he moves her arm towards Emmett. I wince when Ava whimpers.
Emmett winced too. He hates seeing her in pain.
Edward slowly moves her arm back towards him.
"Are you moving it at all or am I doing it?" Edward asked.
"You are moving it. It hurts if I try to move it." Ava said.
"Okay. This time I am going to move it towards me. On the count of three. One. Two. Three." Edward moves her arm towards him this time and she starts crying again.
"Your doing so good sweetheart. One more test. I promise. I am going to m bend your arm towards you this time. On the count of three. One. Two. Three." Edward said.
Edward slowly bends her arm forward and she yelps this time. It was indeed broken just like her leg. Edward gently placed her arm back down.
"Em, please call Dad and tell him we have a patient on our way to the house. To have the medical room set up. We will be there in less than a half an hour. I have one more thing I want to check on Ava and then we will get going." Edward said.
"Good job squirt. You did great. I'll be back in a few minutes." Emmett told Ava.
Ava smiles at him as Emmett got up to make the phone call.
"Can I check your ribs little one? I want to make sure they aren't broken." Edward said.
Ava shakes her head yes.
"I'm going to lift your shirt up a little bit and take a quick look." Edward said.
Ava's heart started to quicken I rubbed her shoulders and try to send her calming waves again.
"I'm going to push down just a little bit. I apologize if this hurts. You're doing so great. Are you ready?" Edward asked.
Ava shakes her head yes. Edward counts to three and gently puts pressure on her side. Ava whimpers again. I did see some bruising on her side.
Edward does the same thing on the other side. It looks like just one side is bruised hopefully. Edward gently pulls her shirt back down and tucks the blanket in.
"I think her ribs are just bruised. We will check them out when we get home." Edward said.
Edward taps Ava on the nose and she gives him a small smile.
"You're brave little one. Thank you for letting me do some testing on you and for not kicking me. My dad will fix you up in no time. Don't worry, I'll be with you the whole time." Edward told her.
"Will Jasper be there too?" Ava asks shyly.
I couldn't help but chuckle.
"Of course I will darlin. I have to make sure you don't kick Edward our or dad while they are fixing you up." I said.
Emmett came back to us. "Dad is getting the medical room all set up. It will be ready when we get home. He is very anxious to meet you Ava and to see what he can do to make you feel better." Emmett told us.
"In that case, let's head on home. Edward, Emmett, can you help me lift Ava up?" I asked.
Emmett and Edward knelt down next to us.
"I'm going to lift your legs carefully and Emmett is going to help me lift you up. We don't mean to hurt you. Then Jasper is going to hold you while we go home. Are you ready?" Edward asked.
Ava nervously nods her head. Ever so gently, Edward and Emmett lifts Ava up. Emmett had put Ava in Edwards arms while I up and stretched. I looked down to see if she had forgotten anything. I spotted her stuff dog.
"You don't want to forget this Darlin." I said.
I tucked her dog into her arm underneath the blanket.
"You going to be okay carrying Ava?" Edward asks, low enough for just me you hear.
"Yes. Give her to me." I said.
Edward hands Ava to me. He made sure she had her dog and she was tucked into her blanket.
"Ava, I need you to listen to me. I am going to be running very fast. I will need you to tuck your head into my chest. Clutch you stuff puppy to make sure you don't lose him. If you start to feel nauseous, let me know and I will slow down. Can you do that for me Darlin? We will be back at my house in less than a half an hour." I told her.
Ava said she understood. I made sure she had her dog with her and Edward had tucked the blanket tight around her. Hopefully she won't be too cold.
"Let's go. I want to get Ava home before dark. Dad will be waiting for us." I said.
Holding Ava tight against my chest, three of us took off for home.
