"Call me by your name"
"Kyoya!"
His name. It was simply his name. Pronounced jovially, with a smile that could rival the sun itself and leave him more dazed than a direct blow, clumsy, without guidance and with the feeling that his chest was tearing; said in the same way that anyone would use to name a precious friend or a beloved one.
It bothered him. It caused him a terrible desire to bite that person to death, because nobody had dared in a long time to call him so casually, with such confidence. Much less, with no one had he felt that by just saying his name, that person could be able to leave him defenseless.
Hibari Kyoya was anything but a helpless being. He would show it as many times as necessary, frowning, fighting, struggling. That way, until his bones broke and his will fail.
At first, it was simply adrenaline. Perhaps, also accompanied by a curiosity about how different a foreigner could be. Blonde hair, bronzed skin, dark eyes that seemed full of life, his bearing, his way of speaking, and his attitude. Everything was new, everything was screaming strange, and if it wasn't because that stranger was able to give a dreamlike fight, Hibari would have only ignored him while raising an eyebrow at how distinct he was.
It turned out that he could defeat him.
That the so-called Dino Cavallone was capable to beat him. Leave him tired, dejected, on his knees even. His blood boiled with anger and expectation. He wanted to defeat him and at the same time, wanted that fighting game not to end. He wanted to crush him and at the same time, wanted to continue admiring his rapid movements and attacks. He wanted to destroy him and at the same time protect him, so that nobody, nobody besides himself, had the pleasure of fighting at his side.
So many contradictions he let pass on, without giving importance.
He didn't give importance when a part of himself was relieved to see him healthy and safe in the future apocalyptic for Vongola of the Millifiore. He didn't give importance to the sense of apprehension in his chest when Dino came to him first, even before to Tsunayoshi, after the herbivores with hidden teeth of the Shimon crushed his pride. He didn't care about Fon's words during the battles of the rainbow over his unobtrusive obsession with the Haneuma.
Or at least, until he noticed that the other herbivores used Cavallone to convince him, to calm him down, to appease his anger and talk to him. It was there when he was conscious of his new situation.
At what point did it happen that it didn't matter what, Dino could control him?
At what point did it happen that they could lead a conversation, even friendly, both bruised and injured, while the sun burned their skin after a training session?
And the spontaneous visits? And the smile that formed unconsciously and inevitably on his lips when they were together?
At what time did he fall so low to feel what the herbivores called "emotions"?
When Cavallone had to return to Italy, Hibari felt a twist in his stomach. A horrible sensation that made his mind think of open his abdomen (yes, something like harakiri) to see if, in that way, he could release the knot that formed every time he thought he wouldn't see him so often.
Another solution would be to kill him before he left, only to avoid the undesirable thoughts that would come with his departure. The typical and annoying "How is he?", the desire to see him again for a fight, to tell him how much it infuriated him to lose his already constant presence, to show him that he was nobody and that he could get rid of him if he wanted to.
All that at the same time.
The harakiri option seemed the best. Maybe he would even make that insolent horse feel guilty for leaving.
How weak, how herbivore he had turned.
"When everything is ready, we will see each other again in Italy" he said that time, with that same smile of always. "When Tsuna decides to take his place and return the family to how it was in the beginning. All of you will have to be with him!"
When Sawada decided. Then, all the guardians - including himself, although he never remembered to have become one - would have to move to Italy.
In response, he simply growled as Dino laughed and took the nerve to ruffle his black hair.
Interestingly, Tsunayoshi didn't take as long to decide as Hibari thought he would. Influence of Vongola Primo and how much he ended up admiring and appreciating his ancestor, perhaps. He was still too soft and tender, but his eyes shone with determination.
Even so, it had been five years. And the circumstances of the reunion were not, what is said, a delight.
"Could you do it?" the voice over the phone, although trying to appear strong, it was clear that hesitated. Not necessarily of fear of whom he was talking to, but of concern for the situation. After all, that issue could end with the death of his beloved older brother, as Sawada was already calling him "You are the one who knows him the most, and your strength is essential to..."
"I will" he replied, interrupting. On the other side of the line, Tsuna sighed in relief.
"Good" he continued "Reborn will arrange to find a plane ticket for Italy as soon as possible. The others and I will go later" it was obvious that hurt him to not leave immediately, however, he couldn't leave Japan yet. Duties or something like that "Hibari-san?"
"Hmn?"
"Thank you."
He hadn't changed much.
If anything, Haneuma's hairstyle now looked more like the one he had seen on his future self a few years ago - although of course, it was logical, now that was the future-.
Dino received him at the airport as an excited child. He hugged him, picked him up while he was spinning, and laughed. And so much "I'm glad to see you again!" and "I hope you like Italy!" and the same "Kyoya!" that made him lose his senses.
But not everything was the same.
Maybe it was that he was too attentive - nothing abnormal, he had been sent there to protect him, he had to be alert -, because he could feel a hint of sadness in those Dino's radiant smiles, a glint of anger in his eyes, and from time to time, a frown when the Cavallone boss lost himself in his thoughts. Of course, when he turned to see Kyoya, he regained all his childish eloquence, but now Hibari was able to see beyond that.
Now he could see a part of him more hidden. And that caused him fear and, why not admit it? Excitement.
Again, he started with contradictions.
The Cavallone mansion was big, splendid and even welcoming. During all the time he had to stay there to serve his mission as a kind of bodyguard while investigating on his own why an enemy family wanted to kill Dino so bad, he ended up losing more of his mind of what he had already lost years ago.
The Haneuma was to blame.
He couldn't keep up with his pace, his changes, the sensations that were a thousand times stronger than before. Were the damned hormones the ones that caused that?
Was it Dino's intention to play with him that way?
The catalyst that started everything was an accident. During the reception of some guests of who there were great suspicions of being involved in the large-scale operation of trying to kill Don Cavallone, Hibari ended up with a Dino who cornered and covered him with his body while a long wine color curtain prevented the others to seeing them.
The plan was to spy through the door, easy. It would have been easier with the help of an illusionist, Mukuro himself had offered to help under everyone's surprise. However, Hibari hated the illusionists and refused to accept the cooperation of one, even if it was other than Rokudo.
It didn't work out as expected. A discussion a few minutes earlier about how whimsical Kyoya was, made them waste time, and when the guests entered the room, Dino pulled him to the corner, blessed those long curtains, and pressed himself hard against him. After all, the others should not notice any deformation in the curtain or they would be discovered, the closer they were, the better.
It was a few minutes, but it felt like centuries.
Their agitated breathing mingled with the heat caused by their so close bodies, making them sweat and shudder. And Hibari couldn't, couldn't stand.
Dino's body brushed against his own, his breath tickled his lips, his hands almost were touching his hips, his blonde hair hid his amber eyes. Kyoya felt nauseous, felt his being shudder, completely forgot the mission and remained static, biting his lip to avoid releasing a sound that could well go through a moan. Cavallone was so suffocating, so tempting, so desirable. He was losing the reason.
When Dino looked into his eyes, he knew that he was, officially, fucked up.
"Oh, Kyoya" he whispered, close, so close. Hibari tried to move, to lose his gaze, but he couldn't. He was petrified, as if he had seen Gorgon's eyes. "Kyoya..." and his voice, and his name pronounced that way. He was on the verge of collapse, of the abyss. So much that he stopped bother, he came closer, pressed closer to him, wanted to feel him more, wanted to feel more. Dino was surprised, but he didn't move.
When their lips were near to touch, Romario's voice brought them back to reality.
So lost were they in themselves they didn't notice when the guests, who were supposed to spy, had left.
Dino pulled away from him as if Hibari burned. As if he was corrosive, a poison that had to be removed at all costs. His chest rose and fell with excitement, and his expression, oh his expression. His eyes shone full of desire, and seconds later, an insolent and almost cruel smile was drawn on his face.
He was a carnivore. And for the first time, Hibari felt like a prey.
It was only an instant, a moment before returning to normal. A few thousandths of a second. Moments later, the Cavallone boss called him back as if nothing had happened, following Romario while Kyoya, with his heart beating so loud it rumbled in his ears, tried to understand what had happened.
There it started. That strange game between flirting, friendship, and hate.
Dino could peek at him with the greatest sweetness in the world and then, give him a sardonic smile; the two things in the interval of a second. He could barely touch his hand and then refuse to look at him all afternoon. He could hug him as if Kyoya were a stuffed animal, seductively whisper his name in his ear, and then dispatch him like a vile nobody.
And he could complain, he could growl, he could reproach him or show outrage. It didn't matter, he continued to participate in that little theater they had both set up to avoid explanations about what was happening, either in the matter of the murder or in the undeniable attraction and desire they felt for each other.
It was that game of pulling and loosening that Hibari was beginning to not endure.
He couldn't stand that being so close to him, Dino could break the advances and the connection they had established, treating him almost with contempt.
He was convinced, he saw at last: Dino was someone to fear. Deep inside, he was manipulative and cold, he analyzed the people and the situation, acting according to his interests. Sagacious and always on alert. There was nothing he would do or say without pondering, always trying to get into the mind of his opponent to know what he was thinking, searching for the same thing and aspects that he was hiding.
He wasn't very different from Rokudo Mukuro. Even more dangerous because he knew how to hide it.
What did he expect? Dino was the boss of one of the most powerful mafia families not only in Italy but in the world. Of course, he had to be like that.
It was driving Kyoya crazy. And the most outrageous of all is that he was more and more attracted to him, to that insufferable mafia golden boy.
Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea that Dino Cavallone disappeared, maybe this way, Hibari could at last rest in peace and stop thinking about him. Nevertheless, if that happened would mean living in a perpetual nightmare (though admitting it, would be a direct blow to pride) and he wasn't prepared for that. He never would be.
The end was one night.
A very bad night for him.
The back arched, he saw the long legs wrapped around the other's hips, the voluptuous chest rose and fell to the rhythm of excited breathing and red lips trembled.
He recognized the woman. Even with disheveled hair and half-removed clothes. What was her name? Rosa Scalanetti or something like that. Her name was a trifle if he kept in mind that he was seeing how that woman seemed to be close to having that kind of relationship with the Cavallone boss.
Bad time to look into Dino's room to leave some documents. However, who in their right mind would think to leave the door of his room open when he was about to have sex with someone?
Hibari felt his chest tear, fiber to fiber.
Dino saw him. His eyes full of terror.
Hibari left the mansion and bit to death everyone who got in his way.
It was stupid.
So stupid.
The young hotel receptionist seemed much willing to "comfort" him, with her skirt too short and her long blonde hair - like his, like his - and there he was, Vongola strongest guardian, with scrapes on his hands from hitting the walls, with the appearance of a wounded herbivore, and imagining that it was he who Dino touched and not the perfectly proportioned and graceful nature, Rosa Scalanetti.
The worst? Only by imagining it, he felt his heart go wild.
The best? It hurts more than he enjoyed it. Besides, he had not done any act as degrading as crying, it was an achievement.
By the way, that was the most horrible masturbation of his life.
"What are you doing here?" he growled, showed his teeth "If the Haneuma sent you ..."
"The boss didn't send me" of course not, and that was another blow to his high self-esteem "Can we talk? There are several things I want to tell you, you deserve to know."
Hibari opened the door completely and let Romario enter.
As much as he hated it, he was curious.
Dino seemed so happy in the photos, flashing his usual sweetness, and smiling as if he were also a child, like those around him who were smiling and expectant him to continue with the story of Pinocchio that the Cavallone had in his hands.
"We don't know how they got it, but it will not take long" Romario smirked "Rosa is very communicative when she is... in need and with a few extra drinks"
"What does this mean?"
"It all started when someone sent us anonymously these photos" he explained "With a threat. The boss felt terrible. The children are from an orphanage, he had been visiting them for a while to cheer them up, after all, he knows what it feels to lose your own parents."
Hibari shifted in his chair, uncomfortable.
"He thought that because of him the children were in danger. Thanks to a study looking for DNA and fingerprints, we could know who sent it and ..." Romario sighed "You can imagine what we did."
"You killed them. The persons who sent the photos" it was not a question, it was a statement "Although I suppose the herbivore refused at first, however, knowing the mafia..."
"There was no other option. Correct" his hands began to tremble, Hibari had a bad feeling "However, it seems that they weren't alone. A few days later, several of these children were found dead on the adjoining avenue where the mansion is located, and when the boss got down on his knees to see them better, a sniper shot him. By millimeters, millimeters and the bullet would have embedded in his heart."
The older man seemed about to cry. Hibari himself felt as if a force of enormous size was pressing his chest at the possibility of a dead Dino.
He didn't hate him that much anymore.
"The Tenth Vongola found out, Reborn told him" he continued "I know he talked to the boss for hours about that. He is one of the few who knows what happened, not even the Arcobaleno knows as much as he does. In the end, Tsunayoshi convinced him to at least accept protection from Vongola."
Hibari made a mental note to bite Sawada to death later. He must have communicated him everything instead of leaving him adrift, no matter how secret it was.
"If you had seen the boss when he discovered that it would be you who would come. He was a whirlwind, on the one hand, he was happy to see you again, on the other, worried that something would happen to you"
"Worried" he interrupted "Why would he be worried? I can defend myself well enough, thank you."
Romario laughed.
"He trained you himself, of course, he knows" and before Hibari came back to interrupt, the oldest one raised a hand and shut him up "But you cannot blame someone for caring about the person he loves, don't you think?"
He blinked once, several times. He tried to process the meaning of the words and couldn't, or maybe he didn't want to, not totally.
"I know I should not get in, nor am I in a position to comment" he sighed and put a hand to his hair that was already starting to turn white "But I ask you to forgive him. Now he doesn't know what to do, he wants to keep you close and at the same time far away for fear that he might lose you. Hence his behavior is so ..." he searched for the word "...erratic."
"Erratic?" Kyoya could not help his words come out with a clear tone of sarcasm "He was with that Rosa when-"
"He was seducing her, to reveal what she knew; from her we get information from the photos that are in your hands. There are clear indications that her family may be the other involved in this. It's the most effective option, apart from weapons. This is how the mafia is!" he shouted, Hibari stared at him with surprise "We suggested it, several of the high commands almost demanded it. It was our fault, don't hate him because of that, he will not stand it."
Romario's cell phone vibrated. Moments later, Cloud Guardian's one.
When Romario answered, there was a lot of static and shots behind the other line. When Hibari did it, Tetsuya Kusakabe's choked voice, who had arrived yesterday and stayed in the mansion to guard, made Hibari Kyoya drop the phone to the floor and jump through the window to not lose a second.
"Kyo-san! Ata- ... Flames- ... Dino Cava- ... hurt"
Everything was silent. As if the explosions, the flames and the screams of the charred people did not exist, as if all the sound had been removed. A grotesque silent film.
Everything seemed to be in slow motion. The scenes happening too slowly, so much that one could see people's faces contracting in pain, frame by frame. Distorted figures, covered in crimson color and whose expressions of pain vanished amid the flames that turned them into ashes or demons with their skin exposed. The fire was eating everything.
He was cold, despite the overwhelming heat that devoured the mansion.
He was all painted in red, combining with the orange flames that burned.
He was unconscious, Hibari couldn't see his chest move, and he was afraid to check if his heart was beating.
He was on the verge of death. Dino, that stupid horse, his Dino was so close to death...
Or had he already died?
How dare he let himself be hurt so much?
How dare he be killed by someone other than Hibari? Only he had that right, nobody else!
When the sound came back, the only thing he heard, the only thing that overcame all the other noise, was his own broken voice calling him, begging him, saying his name as if that could make him live.
So pitiful. So desperate.
"Why do you never call me by my name Kyoya?"
Now he did it, he was doing it. He repeated it so many times while he took him in his arms and soaked his face with tears which washed the blood that shadowed his beautiful features.
"Dino. Dino. Dino" again, again, and again "Dino. Dino, wake up. Wake up, insolent herbivore!"
And he was crying, this time he was crying. Because a world without Dino was the worst nightmare he had, because that was inconceivable.
And he was going to destroy those who dared to give him a perspective of that world.
Much of his skin was already red hot, bare, scorched. His muscles ached and he had several broken bones.
Even so, he kept moving. While all the others escaped, allies and enemies, he was still there, continuing to strike, dismember, curse. The surrounding area was full of bloody corpses, masses of flesh looking repulsive.
The woman gave her last scream when Hibari slammed her head against the ground, and although she was dead, he continued to make wounds, continued to hit with fury. Because it was her fault that Dino was like that, because of her everything happened, because of her...
"Kyoya!"
His voice. It was his voice.
"Kyoya!" a soft hand took his, too tense and bruised from the blows, stopping him. Behind, he felt as someone approached him, another hand went to his eyes, covering the view to prevent him from seeing the broken doll that was now his prey. To avoid him from destroying a body that no longer had a shape "Kyoya, enough. Oh my God, this is my fault. Forgive me, Kyoya, forgive me."
Dino. It was Dino.
He could feel his trembling body holding his own. His breath on the back of his neck, his tears wetting his clothes and his voice saying his name.
Dino was still alive.
A blue butterfly, a naive creature that entered the mansion at the wrong time, vanished in the air, burned by the flames.
Seconds later, Hibari fainted.
"I'll bite you to death."
"H-hibari-san! Is that the first thing you say when you wake up?!"
"You didn't tell me everything that had happened, that's why you deserve to be bitten to death."
"W-wait!"
A pain of a thousand needles burying at the same time all over his body when he tried to move, stopped him in his tracks. Tsunayoshi, noticing what happened, came closer to the bed while helping him to sit down.
"You're still too hurt, don't strain yourself."
"Nonsense."
"Hibari-san, please ..."
"I need-"
"That's enough!" he shouted, frowning. The years had helped him to be less fearful "You just woke up after being a week asleep, just calm down, okay?"
Speaking with the omnivore, he discovered that Rosa and her family weren't just mere minions, but the whole brain behind.
The Scalanetti were angry at the arrest of their leader, Rosa's brother, Eduardo. The police arrested him for drug smuggling thanks to the help of the Cavallone, who, like the Vongola, were against drug use. The new leader of the family had been Rosa, under the disgust and disappointment of several - it is no surprise that in the mafia women were underestimated, even if they were the ones who knew the most and who most followed the rules, ironically-.
Rosa began a revenge against the Cavallone, especially Dino, for whom she was attracted and didn't mind spending a night together before killing him. Bravo.
She didn't count on Dino leaving her just after seeing Hibari leave the mansion. And it was that tantrum that made her leave her initial plan and order an attack.
They ended up being destroyed by Hibari. The survivors captured by Vongola, whose leader, the Tenth, was extremely angry that they dared to attack his older brother.
It was Dino who stopped Hibari. When Kyoya was nothing but a beast controlled by anger, he wasn't afraid of him and stopped him, he even sobbed for putting him in such a situation.
Hibari needed to see him, clarify the damn things.
End the fucking game they had started and face the truth.
"I like you"
"Sorry?"
He sighed. From the expression Dino had in those moments, it seemed that he was talking to a ghost and not to someone alive.
"I like you" he repeated. Sure, concise. So that there was no doubt about his intentions or some misunderstanding "Do not expect me to say something as degrading as I love you, I haven't fallen so low. Be ok with that"
It had been enough to have to accept it. Hibari Kyoya, Vongola Cloud Guardian, had lowered himself to the level of a useless herbivore by admitting that he felt something for a person, more than just the adrenaline of the fight with which it had all begun.
He had fallen, and very deep.
"K-kyoya-"
"I just came to say it" he turned around, began to walk and made a nod to a confused Kusakabe who had his mouth so open that it was a surprise how the flies had not yet entered it. A few meters away, Tsuna looked at him just as surprised, passing his view from Hibari to Dino, the most stunned of all.
His subordinates weren't close, so when the Cavallone boss stepped forward to try to stop Hibari, he tripped over one of his bandages and fell facedown. Luckily, they were in the garden of the Vongola mansion, where they were all staying until the Cavallone mansion will be repaired, and the impact was softened by the grass.
Tsuna shouted and ran to help Dino. Hibari smiled and kept walking
Insistent, annoying and repetitive knocks at his door at 12:00 at night woke him up and made him growl in annoyance. If it was the one he thought, he wasn't going to stop just because he was hurt.
He opened the door, and before he could even move a muscle, he was caught by arms that immobilized him and lips that tasted like honey that silenced him.
There it was again, that tapping in his chest that echoed throughout his being and made him as fragile as glass, that if it wasn't because he was being held so carefully and delicately, he would be broken.
The brown eyes looked at him with longing, and when Dino released his mouth to speak, he seemed to be on the verge of despair.
"I like you. I love you. Kyoya, please. Forgive me. Stay with me. Sorry. I am a jerk. I hurt you but I want to be with you. Let me remedy it. Please, my precious bird" the words came one after the other, so close together that they barely were understandable.
Hibari decided to silence him by putting their lips together again.
He understood and would stay there even if it meant being a top masochist.
Contradictions, there were always contradictions when it came to Dino.
Because he could be sweet and wild at the same time. He could be affectionate and passionate. He could touch him as if Hibari were an invaluable treasure that could disappear at any moment, leave him without air and make him feel his heart was coming out of his chest.
Tempting and exquisite.
The same adrenaline as the battle, but much more intimate. Much more fragile too.
He rested his hand on the Cavallone's abdomen, despite the bandages that were there, he could feel his muscles, his breathing. Sweat fell on tanned skin.
"Kyoya ..."
"Destroy me," he asked. Only he had the right to do it "Destroy me and put me back together"
He didn't need to ask again. Dino did it.
He shattered him when he was inside him, quieting his groan with a kiss that tasted bittersweet. He made him lose his mind with each movement, to the point of making him beg for more. And he rebuilt him when he allowed a kiss the moment when he lost himself at the top of pleasure.
There was no return. And it's not like he wanted to return either.
"Say your name."
"What?"
"Say your name. I just want to hear it."
It was the weirdest request one could be made to someone after waking up next to that person, with the sun filtering through the curtains and the birds singing outside.
"Dino" he pleased him, however, he tilted his head to the side, confused "Why?..."
He shut up, and opened his eyes. At that moment, Hibari knew he didn't have to explain anything, the haneuma had already understood.
Not even the night before, the Cloud had dared to call the Cavallone boss by name, no matter how much he wanted it. He couldn't, not when whenever he tried to say it he only remembered his own broken and throaty voice for crying when he believed that fool had abandoned him. And he thought he could dull that memory with Dino's voice in that beautiful Italian accent he had, saying his own name.
"Are you al-"
"Hibari-san!" the door swung open "Dino-san is not in his room! You have any id-"
It was an awkward moment when the Vongola boss looked at both of them, dumbfounded. Then, Tsunayoshi's face turned completely red and the embarrassment leaked, clear as water, on his face. Dino felt a huge shame, Hibari only raised an eyebrow.
"I realize he is not in his room" he replied.
The Hieee! rumbled throughout the mansion.
"SORRY!" Tsuna exclaimed, his face the same shade as the first generation storm guardian's hair "I'M SORRY FOR THE INTERRUPT!"
"T-tsuna, wait!"
And while Tsunayoshi wanted to run away, Dino apologized for worrying him and using one of the rooms of the Vongola mansion for that, and several of the other guardians approached with curiosity, Hibird came out behind the Tenth Vongola and fluttered as far as his master was. Hibari hadn't seen him in a while, although he was sure he was always there, accompanying him.
"Hibari, Haneuma Dino" the little bird sang.
Hibari decided to go back to bed, ignoring the various voices that were already beginning to mix in the room. He preferred to focus on Dino's voice saying his own name.
It sounded so good.
"Hey, Haneuma" he called. Dino turned to see him "For the next time, call me by your name" at least until that memory was lost and disappeared from his mind. And also, at least until he could breathe normally when the Cavallone said Kyoya.
I should be updating my other fics instead of writing something new. But the idea suddenly popped into my head and I didn't resist. And I love D18 but I hadn't written anything about them yet.
I have to admit that I did battle with the personalities, but I hope they were acceptable.
The title is inspired by André Aciman's book of the same title. A beautiful book, by the way.
