It's been a while. I'm working on a full-length story, nearly finished. Should be up soon, so stay tuned. Hope you enjoy this piece. It's based off of "Dance, Baby!" by Boy Pablo.
Dance, Baby!
I'm sitting alone
Nobody to hold
The people in here are crazy
Faking a smile now
Been here for a while now
I'm fed up with this
I just wanna go home
But damn, that girl
Set me up with her
Tobias sat on the couch that was pushed up against the wall to make room for a dancefloor. He hugged the arm of the couch, unwilling to go anywhere near the opposite side where a girl sat atop a teenage boy's lap, passionately, sloppily, and drunkenly kissing. Although the PDA was definitely off-putting, he couldn't help but wish he had someone to hold too. He didn't know the nature of their relationship. They could've been just hooking up, or they could've been a couple that'd been together for years. He didn't know, but he knew he wanted a companion. Someone to share everything with.
He looked over, and almost as though on cue after thinking of companionship, across the room he saw a girl in a glittery, light blue dress. She had long, straight, blonde hair. It was parted down the middle, and almost looked slicked back because of how perfect it appeared. She was thin, but toned, working every angle of that dress. It was tight, squeezing every curve. It plunged like a V-neck, and he tried to refrain from looking too closely. She was dancing carelessly and having a good time. He noticed there was no drink in her hand, and he wondered why. Everyone was trashed at these frat parties, and usually he was too.
She finally opened her eyes, as she had closed them as she danced to the music. She breathed heavily, then began to look around, likely for a friend.
The woman locked eyes with him, and he didn't look away. He smiled at her, then gave her the look. It was how he always let a girl know he was interested at a bar or club or party. He visibly looked her up and down, and inquisitively raised an eyebrow as he smirked.
She gave a flattered look, then winked at him. She turned back to the people she was dancing with, though, and seemingly dismissed what just happened. Or perhaps she was waiting for him to make the first move.
He got up to go talk to her, but a buzzed Christina smiled at him from across the room. He returned a fake one, but remnants of a real smile still remained. She visibly excused herself from the people she was talking to and made her way over to him. He met her in the middle, and she was quick to talk.
Christina kind of frowned and said, "You don't look like you're having the best time, Four."
He shrugged. "I don't know, I'm usually down for a party, you know me, but I shouldn't have let you convince me to come out tonight. I did just see this girl, th—"
She pursed her lips together, clearly feeling guilty, but interrupting him anyway. "I'm sorry, I guess I just thought this would help you get out of your rut. And I have this friend from Westchester who I kind of thought you might hit it off with. Since, you know, you're lonely and all."
Tobias glared. "That's why you wanted to get me out?"
She smiled a bit. "Yeah, I was just trying to help you out, man."
Her smile was contagious. He let it transfer to himself as he said, "Well, I appreciate the help, but there's a girl that I want to—"
Christina interrupted again, likely not even realizing since she's intoxicated. "Okay, just let me introduce you two though! My friend is great, and totally your type."
She grabbed his arm and dragged him through the mass of people. He bumped and shoved everyone by accident, muttering apologies while knowing no one cared enough to listen to them. Eventually they stopped, and he looked up once heard Christina shouting.
"Tris! Trissss!" she shouted.
The girl turned around and saw Christina and grinned. "Hey, sorry I lost you!"
Tobias laughed a little, but he knows they couldn't have heard. He couldn't believe the girl he was on his way to talk to was Chris's friend.
They spoke a little more, and she finally introduced him. "This is my friend! His name's Four!"
She smiled, sticking out her hand for him to shake. "Hi, Four. I'm Tris. I think we kind of met a few minutes ago."
He nodded as he softly shook her hand. It wasn't soft, and he was almost surprised. He wondered what she did so often to make them callous like that. "Yeah, we did. I was actually on my way over here, and then I ran into Christina, who insisted on introducing me to her friend. Luckily, that friend was you and I got to kill two birds with one stone."
She giggled, and was about to respond until Christina did what she did best: interrupted. "I'm going to go find Will, okay? You two stay together, we'll be right back!"
We each nodded and then she was on her way.
Dance with me, baby
Dance with me, baby
Let's get lost right here
Dance with me, baby
Dance with me, baby
Under the chandelier
Dance with me, baby
Dance with me, baby
Don't turn me down for him
What does he have that I can't give to you, girl?
I can't understand this
This guy's just a douchebag
I'm so disappointed in myself
He smiled and felt the need to speak again. "Can I get you a drink? Or possibly a dance?"
She smiled back but seemed like she stiffened a bit. "Actually, there's someone getting me a drink right now. Thank you, though!"
Although he was disappointed, he continued. "Ah," he began, "I shouldn't be surprised. I mean, everyone wants to get the prettiest girl here a drink. I just wish I saw you sooner."
She looked down, but was smiling. "Me too, honestly. But I kind of met someone already…"
He smiled. "That's alright. Guess I'll just have to prove myself. I like a challenge, anyway."
"Well then I think you'll be pleased to find out that I'm an extremely difficult person," she said coyly.
"Here's your drink, sweetcheeks," a man said, handing Tris a drink.
Tobias observed him. He had black hair with brown eyes, and was big. Muscular. Tobias was slightly bigger and taller than him, though, so he had to admit that literally looking down on him felt pretty good.
"Hey, man," Tobias greeted, attempting to shake his hand. "I'm Four."
He scoffed, looking at his outreached hand and ignoring it. "Like the number?"
Tobias withdrew his hand and smiled bitterly as he stepped closer. "Yes. Exactly like the number."
Before anything else could be said, Tris broke the tension. "Thank you, Peter, for the drink, but I asked for water since I don't really drink," she said, handing it back to him. "Um, remember Christina? This is her friend, she introduced us a few minutes ago."
He nodded, then wrapped his free arm around Tris's waist, pulling her closer. She looked down uncomfortably, so Tobias eyed her. Something seemed a little off. "Yeah," he answered plainly.
Tobias cleared his throat. "Okay, well, I know Christina said we should stick together, but you seem to be doing alright." He glanced up at Peter, attempting to keep his cool in front of Tris. "I'll see you around."
She quickly inhaled to say something, but nothing came out, so he continued to walk away.
The look on her face says
I hope we go places
I'm left alone
Should've stayed at home
And searched how to date on Chrome
Tobias saw the look on her face when they spoke, and he could've sworn she wanted to be with him. However, her words contradicted that expression. She was with Peter, and he couldn't do anything besides let her choose. He didn't mind, though. All good things take time, he reminded himself.
Part of him wished he stayed at home, and maybe looked up some tips on how to get a girl. He thought he knew, since he always considered himself smooth, but times were changing, he supposed.
"Four!" someone shouted. "What the hell?"
Christina. He sighed, then began explaining. "I know. I tried. I really did, but she turned me down for a guy she already met here. Peter, or something."
"Ugh!" she shouted. She was clearly drunker than the last time he saw her. "He sucks! Let me see if I can—"
It was Tobias's turn to interrupt. "No. She can make her own choices. All I can do just hang out and try to show her that I'm better."
She smiled, then gave him a sloppy hug. "You are so nice, Four. I'm going to go talk to her anyway though."
Before he could change her mind or grab her hand and stop her, she was off. He let out a defeated sigh and began to follow her.
Dance with me, baby
Let's get lost right here
Dance with me, baby
Under the chandelier
Don't turn me down for him
What does he have that I can't give to you, girl?
"Tris!" she yelled. "Can I borrow you for a sec? Thanks." With that, she was swept away by her friend before she even received an answer.
"Chris, what the hell?" she shouted. "I'm a little busy."
"Are you going to hook up with Peter?" she asked, wasting no time at all.
She scoffed, and briefly glanced at Tobias. "Seriously? I don't know, he's nice and likes me. Why do you care?"
"Because you're my best friend and I worry! I just don't know him. You know? Like, if it were Four, here, I'd totally get off your back about it since I know him very well. And I have heard some not-nice things about Peter, that's all. I don't know. Do what you will."
Tris looked from Chris to Tobias, then back to Chris again. She turned around and glanced at Peter.
"Alright. You have 60 seconds to state your case," said Tris. "Q&A, general facts, whatever you'd like."
He laughed. "Okay. Well, here's something. I'm incredibly good at reading people. You know on those crime shows how they have to build a profile on someone? I can basically do that. I usually just call it my gut feeling."
She laughed. "Do me."
"Let's at least go to the bedroom," he said with a wink. "But in all seriousness, there's a few things I noticed about you. You're wearing a light blue dress to accentuate your eyes, which you believe to be the best thing going for you physically. You're wearing heels because you don't like to be seen as weak, and you want men to be intimidated by you, so you like to appear taller. You also like to show off your toned calves to prove you're strong too. You wear your hair long for the same reason, though: to appear taller. You're not drinking, which also implies your athletic status at college, along with those calves of yours. You gave me a look earlier that indicated your attraction, but then immediately brushed it off. You want to appear mysterious, but you don't have to try. You already do naturally. You're dancing with that piece of work over there, who, by the way, already found another female to treat like an object." Tris turned around and looked, but didn't make any expression to indicate how she felt about the situation. Maybe she truly didn't care. "You danced with him, at first, because you wanted to, but you kept dancing with him to make me want you more," he said, smiling. "Well, joke's on you, because I don't think I could want you any more than the first time I laid eyes on you."
Her mouth was agape, as was Christina's. Did he just totally fuck up? Maybe girls didn't like that. All he wanted to do was prove he was unique, but maybe he just came off like a weird creep. He thought he was accentuating his intelligence while also emphasizing that he was smooth and social too.
She nodded, smiling. Was she impressed? "That's one hell of a 'gut feeling,' but alright, Four, you just earned yourself a dance. Just one, though, because after that, me and you are getting out of here and going to a diner to dissect everything you just said."
He extended a hand, and she grabbed it gently.
He couldn't wait to waste away the night with her.
Dance with me, baby
Let's get lost right here
Dance with me, baby
Under the chandelier
Dance with me, baby
What does he have that I don't?
I could give the world to you
If you turned him down for me
By the time they made it to the diner it was nearly two in the morning. Over milkshakes they discussed his profiling skills, and her interests too. They talked about her volleyball career, her school, and major. It only made him fall for her even more, which he didn't know was possible. Eventually, they were the only two left in the diner besides the staff, who all gathered in the back. Classic 70's songs filled the air the entire time they were there, which revealed more than he'd thought it would about each other.
Tris enjoyed The Beatles more than anything, although they broke up the first year of the decade. She thought it endearing of Tobias to like Queen, she told him. When they were talking about music, "Love Me Do" came on the stereo. He stood, then graciously extended his hand, palm up, indicating that he'd like for her to dance with him.
She laughed a little, but looked at him with adoration, nonetheless. "We were just at a party, Four." She gently took his hand and stood.
He smiled, then said, "Yeah, but they don't play Beatles songs at places like that, and, honestly, it's way more fun to dance to The Beatles than anything they play."
She grinned and looked up at him. "You got me there."
Tobias was always proud of his dancing skills, he couldn't lie. Obviously everyone knew how to dance at a club or house party. All you had to do was jump up and down and throw your arms around like crazy. He knew how to dance though, like actual moves. He was hoping he might swoon Tris with said moves.
He did a few fancy steps and ended up twirling her in a way that she ended up with her back pressed against his torso. She giggled a few times as he swayed their hips left to right, and then he released her, twirling her back so she'd face him again. He watched her lips sing along to the song, and she caught him.
"What?" she asked.
He shrugged. "You're just cute."
She looked down, flattered. "Thank you."
The song changed, and in the pause between, they moved to sit back down.
"Wait," he said after he heard the first note of the song. "One more."
She grinned when she realized the song. "You don't have to tell me twice," she said, wrapper her arms around his neck. "I want this to be my wedding song."
He laughed. "Okay, as long as you let me play 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' by Queen.'"
Tris couldn't contain her smile. "Awfully quick of you to assume we're going to get married."
He shrugged, then smiled. "Call it a gut feeling."
