Chapter 1: I thought you were dead
3rdPOV
Charlie Swan is driving back home after a long tiring day at work. The rain started to come down just as Charlie was leaving the station. Now it's pouring down hard, so hard that he can barely see three feet in front of him. The sun has gone down four hours ago and there is no moon light out tonight.
Then out of nowhere someone ran in front of Charlie's car. Slamming on his breaks but it was too late. He felt that thud as he hit the person that ran out. His brown eyes followed the body as it hit the ground and rolled. After putting the car in park Charlie got out of his car and ran to the now still body that is laying on their side.
Their back is facing towards Charlie as he knelt beside them and turned them over. His heart fell when his eyes fell upon the girl's face. There was blood rolling down her face and he can see some wounds that are bleeding. Then she took a deep breath scaring the shit out of Charlie who fell on his butt. "Oh, damn you're still alive." Charlie said as he moved back to her. "Don't worry I'm going to get you to a hospital." Charlie said as he picked her up.
The girl nodded as he picked her up. Charlie noticed she didn't make a sound as he picked her up. He can feel some of her ribs are broken. He placed her in the back seat and she put her head against the window. Charlie got back behind the wheel and took off. "What's your name?" Charlie asked her as he drove to the hospital. "Lucy Hearth." Lucy said, and Charlie almost swerved off the road.
Lucy looked at him in the mirror and saw the shock look on his face. "What's wrong?" Lucy said as she tried not to pass out from the blood lose. "Is your mother's name Kim?" Charlie asked, and he heard Lucy growl at the name. "Yes." Lucy said in a low voice. Charlie is very shocked. "Lucy I'm your uncle Charlie." Charlie said as he saw her eyes go wide then she passed out.
Once Charlie got to the hospital he picked up Lucy and ran in. Carlisle was the first to know what was going on. When Charlie came in he smelt the blood and came jogging over to him. "What happened Charlie?" Carlisle said as he looked at Lucy. "She came out of nowhere and I hit her with my car." Charlie said, and Carlisle looked at him with shock. "Ok let's get her to the ER." Carlisle said, and Charlie followed him.
Before Carlisle went behind the door Charlie spoke to him. "Please save her." Charlie said in a little voice. Carlisle looked at him. "I will try my best Charlie." Carlisle said before he left Charlie standing there for a while.
Charlie went to the waiting room and paced back and forth waiting. Minutes ticked to hours and still Charlie is waiting. No one came out to let Charlie know what is going on. It wasn't till four in the morning when Carlisle came into the waiting room. Charlie shot up and walked over to Carlisle. Carlisle smiled at him. "She's going to make a full recovery." Carlisle said, and Charlie let the breath he was holding. "Thank god." Charlie said as he looked at Carlisle. "Do you know her?" Carlisle asked Charlie.
Charlie sat down, and Carlisle sat in front of him. Carlisle watched as Charlie rubbed the back of his neck. "I had a younger sister name Kim. She moved away right after high school with a guy named Rex Hearth. Not to long after that they found out Kim was pregnant. Soon Lucy was born. When Lucy turned six Rex had an accident and Kim couldn't raise Lucy by herself. I really don't know what happen after that but the next thing I heard is Kim was killed and they shipped Lucy to a mental institution. Years later it was burned down, and I thought she died in it." Charlie said, and Carlisle looked at his friend.
Carlisle and his family just moved to Forks just a few months ago and Charlie became a friend to him. Hearing this he doesn't know what to say. "What are you going to do now Charlie?" Carlisle ask him. "I'm the only family she has left. I don't know what happened to her all these years. I want to take her home, but she was in a mental institution for a reason I do not know why." Charlie said softly to Carlisle.
"We can bring someone in and see how her mental state is. Then go from there if you want?" Carlisle said to him. Charlie smiled a little. "That will be good. If there is something wrong I can get her the help she needed." Charlie said.
So, Carlisle made a call and Dr. Howl was at the hospital within the hour. "What am I looking for?" Dr. Howl said as she moves some of her light brown hair out of her face. "We want to see where her state of mind is. Is she a danger to herself, to others or is she fine and Charlie can take her home?" Carlisle said to Dr. Howl. "Ok. I can do that. Is she up?" Dr. Howl said with a smile as she ran her eyes up and down Carlisle body, checking him out.
"Yes, she is. Lucy is waiting in this room." Carlisle said with a smile. Dr. Howl nodded before she pulled out her note book and pen, before she went into Lucy's room. Carlisle stood outside of Lucy's room and listened to them. "Hello Lucy. I am Dr. Howl. Do you know why I am here for?" Dr. Howl said as she sat next to Lucy.
Lucy watched Dr. Howl when she walked in and all the way to her sitting down beside her. "No." Lucy said, and her voice is low soft and musical, but it sounds like she hasn't spoken much. "I'm here to ask you a few questions." Dr. Howl said with a fake smile on her face. Lucy didn't want to speak with this woman who thinks she is better than Lucy. "Ok." Lucy said, and Dr. Howl saw the look in her eyes and she felt a little scared.
"I know you were in the Sunburst mental institution." Dr. Howl said in a low squeaky voice. Lucy looked down at her bandage hands. "I guess you read my file. What they said is all lies." Lucy said, with rage in her voice. Dr. Howl froze in her seat as she heard the rage in Lucy's voice. "What do you mean it's all lies?" Dr. Howl said, after she found her voice again. "Really? Someone with the power to start fires? That isn't real. That hell whole was a place they had to do their sick experiments on normal people like you and me." Lucy said.
Carlisle's eyes grew a little wide when he heard Lucy speak. "What do you me like you and me?" Dr. Howl said. "All the people that was in that place use to be normal till they got their knifes into them. I was one of the very rare ones that was able to keep my mind." Lucy said as she leaned back into the soft pillows. Dr. Howl wrote down some notes. "Why haven't any of the family's noticed this?" Dr. Howl said.
This made Lucy laugh and it was a cold laugh that made Dr. Howl's blood run cool. Carlisle's hair raises up when she laughed. "They weren't stupid. They only took people who didn't have family. Most of them was foster kids that happen to land on some of their payroll people desks in the foster care system. They would take them to Sunburst and they pay them for the kids. Then after years of what they did to them, they just gave up." Lucy said as she closed her eyes as the lights are hurting her dark purple eyes. "Why didn't you give up?" Dr. Howl asked Lucy. "Cause I'm not weak like the rest of them. I was used to pain so what they did to me was like any other day." Lucy said as she remembers what parents did to her.
"Why were you use to the pain before you got there?" Dr. Howl asked as she started to relax a little. "My parents never wanted me. They hated me just as much as they hated each other. My father thought my mother cheated on him, but that dumb fuck didn't know what that he's family left the main branch of the Hearth family. What I could dig up that dark purple eyes did run in his family. It was very rare, but some was born with them." Lucy growled with rage. Dr. Howl knew that Lucy was growling at her parents and not at her.
"What did they do to you?" Dr. Howl asked Lucy. Carlisle held his breath the hold time and it's a good thing he didn't need to breath or he would have pasted out. How could a mother not want her child? Carlisle couldn't understand that. "After I could use the bathroom and open the doors to the frig. They left me alone most of the day. Kim drank till she was numb and when Rex got home she would pick fights. Rex did drugs and had sex with any women he could pick up." Lucy said as she dug her nails into the sheets.
Dr. Howl could hear the sheets tearing from Lucy's long sharp nails. "If you're not ready to speak about it yet. Then you don't have to talk about it just yet." Dr. Howl said to Lucy. "Thank you. Let's just say when he was killed it was a good day for me. When Kim was murdered I was free from the pain." Lucy said and Dr. Howl looked at her. "They said you saw who murdered her." Dr. Howl said to her. "I just turned seven and I had a wild imagination. There is no such thing as a demonic black and white clown with long arms and razer like fingers. I was scared and finding her body mutilated in the middle of her bedroom floor. They thought it was me. How the hell could I do it? I was underweight small and weak. How could I over power her?" Lucy said keeping her eyes closed.
"What happened to you after the institution burn down?" Dr. Howl asked Lucy. "For a few years I lived in the forest near the building." Lucy said. "Why didn't you try to contact your uncle?" Dr. Howl asked her as she watched Lucy. Lucy kept herself relaxed. "I didn't know I had an uncle on Kim's side. I didn't know I had an uncle till Charlie said he was my uncle." Lucy said. Carlisle is so fix on what Lucy's is saying he didn't feel his phone go off.
"Ok. So, you were in the forest for a few years then what happened?" Dr. Howl said, and Lucy slowly opened her eyes and they watered a little from the light. Her dark purple eyes looking into Dr. Howl's dark brown eyes. "He came and took me away. Brain washing me to believe he is my master and I was his puppet. Then yesterday he attacked me, trying to kill. I ran and then I got hit by a car." Lucy said.
Dr. Howl looked at her and licked her dry lips. "What did he make you do?" Dr. Howl asked softly. "I can't remember. Everything is so fuzzy. I don't know what's real and what is from my imagination. I do remember I spent more of my time in my head. Reading books and just thinking of made up stuff." Lucy said in a tired voice.
That is when Carlisle came into the room. "Sorry to bother you Dr. Howl, but I think we should let Lucy rest. She had a very long day and now she needs to rest up." Carlisle said to her. Dr. Howl got up and left the room. "Do you need anything before I leave Lucy?" Carlisle said with a smile. "If you don't mind can you close the blinds and turn off the light?" Lucy asked in a low voice. "Sure, thing sweetheart." Carlisle said, and he saw Lucy giving him a confused look, but she never said anything.
Lucy watched as Carlisle turned closed the blinds and turned off the light as he stood by the door. "Lucy?" Carlisle said softly, and Lucy looked at him. Even thou the room is pitch black and the only light you can see if from under the door. Lucy can see Carlisle looking at her. "I need to ask you a few things when you feel up to it." Carlisle said with a smile in his voice and face. "We can talk now just leave off the lights please." Lucy said as she watched Carlisle walk over and sit down in the same chair that Dr. Howl was sitting earlier.
"What did you need to talk about?" Lucy said as she stared into his golden eyes. Lucy smiled when she saw what he really is. "I noticed that you are healing a lot fast then someone normal. Do you know why that is?" Carlisle asked her. He knows there is something different about Lucy and he wants to know if she is safe.
Carlisle saw the sad look on her face before she looked down. "In Sunburst they experimented on me. They shot me up with different kinds of stuff and one of them was a healing agent. My body took to it like a fish in water. So, I heal half the time it would take a normal person to heal. Can I ask you something Dr. Cullen?" Lucy said as she slowly looked back up at him. "Yes, you can sweetheart." Carlisle said, and he saw that confused look on her face when he called her 'sweetheart'.
"Am I going to have to go back into a mental institution" Lucy asked in a very low scared voice. Carlisle slowly placed his hand on top of Lucy's and noticed a small spike of heat from it before it went back down to a normal temperature. "What I can tell you're not crazy or going to hurt yourself or others. I think you can leave tomorrow if your healed more." Carlisle said with a smile. "Thank you. Is Charlie still here?" Lucy asked Carlisle.
"Yes. Did you want to see him for a little bit?" Carlisle asked. Charlie has been asking to see her. "Yes. I would like to see him." Lucy said with a smile. "Ok I go and get him for you. I will see you later." Carlisle said as he stood back up. Lucy watched him as he walked out of room.
Carlisle went to get Charlie and took him he could take Lucy home tomorrow if everything was ok. Charlie walked into the dark room and made his way to Lucy's bed. "How are you feeling?" Charlie asked Lucy. "I'm fine. I been through worse believe it or not. How are you doing?" Lucy asked as she can see the tired look in his eyes. "I'm better now that I know you're ok." Charlie said, and Lucy looked at him as she turned on the lamp, so he can see her. The light from the lamp didn't hurt Lucy's eyes.
Charlie saw the confused look on her face but didn't say anything to her. "So, um Dr. Cullen said I might be able to leave tomorrow and I don't have to go to a mental institution." Lucy said to him. Charlie smiled at her. "That's good to hear. I wanted to ask you something." Charlie said, and Lucy waited for him to go on with a smile. "I know you have nowhere to go. I was wondering if you like to live with me?" Charlie said.
"Why would you do that for me?" Lucy said in a confused voice. "Why would I? Because you are family and I can't let you go on the streets." Charlie said as he saw the still confused look on Lucy's face. "Why do you have that look on your face Lucy?" Charlie said with worry in his voice. "Not once in my life has someone done something like you doing." Lucy said, and Charlie's heart fell more.
"That is very sad. I hope you will come home with me." Charlie said with a small smile. Lucy blushed a little. "Ok, I will come, but once I'm fully healed I will get back on my feet." Lucy said with a small smile. Charlie smiled more as he looked at her. "That is great! I will fix up the couch for you, so you don't have to go upstairs." Charlie said with a huge smile on his face. He is going to get to know his niece and he won't be alone anymore. After Bella stopped coming down for visits he became very lonely.
Lucy smiled and blushed a little at him. "Thank you, uncle Charlie, that is nice of you to do for me." Lucy said with a small smile as her cheeks turned pink. Charlie blushed too as he rubbed the back of his head. "It's the least I can for my long-lost niece." Charlie said softly to Lucy. "Thank you, uncle Charlie." Lucy said as she watched Charlie stand up to leave. "I will see you tomorrow sweetheart." Charlie before he kissed the top of Lucy's blonde hair. "Ok uncle Charlie be safe." Lucy said in a tired voice.
After Charlie left Lucy snuggled down into the covers and started to fall asleep. Lucy hasn't slept in a few weeks, so as she drifted off into a deep sleep dreams of the past.
The next day Carlisle came in to check on Lucy. As he walked into the room he could hear Lucy's shallow breathing. Lucy is still fast asleep, and she was making animal sounds in her sleep. As Carlisle got closer to Lucy, she jerked awake with a growl as she turned to look at Carlisle growling. Smiling softly at Lucy as Carlisle got closer to her.
"Lucy its ok. You're in the hospital, you got hit by a car." Carlisle said softly. Lucy started to wake up more. "Sorry about that. I'm just really tired." Lucy said before she yawned. "Its ok let me check on you to see if you are ready to go home." Carlisle said with a smile. Then he started to check Lucy out and she will be able to leave today. Lucy is going to have a cast on her leg for three weeks and she is going to be sore for a month.
Charlie waited in the waiting room for Lucy. Carlisle rolled Lucy out in a wheelchair to Charlie. "Before you two leave there is some stuff we have to go over." Carlisle said with a smile. "Ok." Charlie said as he walked closer to them. "Lucy will be in this cast for three weeks. So, she can't get the cast wet, when she bath's make sure you don't get it wet. Lucy is going to be very sore for the next month. Give her two of these pills," Carlisle said as he pulled out a bottle of blue pills. "With meals three times a day. It should help with the pain." Carlisle said. "Thank you, Carlisle." Charlie said before he rolled Lucy to his car.
Lucy held on to her crutches as Charlie drove them home. They didn't speak but listened to the radio. "You like this kind of music?" Charlie asked Lucy. "I like all kinds of music." Lucy said with a small smile. "Nice." Charlie said not sure what to say to her. Lucy understood that Charlie isn't used to having a female around. Lucy smiled at him as he turned down the road to his house.
Pulling up to the house Charlie helped Lucy out of the car and watched her carefully. Lucy slowly made her way up the sidewalk to the stairs. Charlie watched Lucy to make sure she won't hurt herself. But Lucy didn't have any trouble not even with the stairs. Yes, she felt the pain in her leg and threw out her body, but she was used to pain this was nothing.
Charlie unlocked the door and let Lucy in first. "I made up the couch for you, so you don't have to keep on going up and down the stairs. There is a small bathroom behind the stairs. I cleaned and fixed it up for you." Charlie said as Lucy sat on the couch. "Thank you, Uncle Charlie." Lucy said as Charlie sat in his chair. Charlie didn't know what to say to his niece. "What do you like to do uncle Charlie?" Lucy asked him with a smile. Charlie smiled back before speaking. "I like to fish, watch sports and go to the dinner to eat." Charlie said to Lucy. "I like to fish and watch sports too. When I'm able to get moving with out the crouches I be cooking you home made meals." Lucy said and Charlie looked at her.
"You can cook?" Charlie asked Lucy. "Yes, I can cook really good. When you taste my food you will never want to get out again." Lucy said with a huge smile. "I can't wait to try your food Lucy." Charlie said as he stood up to take off his belt and gun. "Is there any games on today?" Lucy asked Charlie who lit up. "Yes there is a football game about to start in an hour. Let me go get us some food and snacks before it starts. I have a menu for the dinner so you can pick out what you want." Charlie said in a happy tone. Lucy giggled a little just at how happy her uncle Charlie is being. "Sounds good to me uncle Charlie." Lucy said with a happy smile.
Charlie went to get the menu and gave it to Lucy to look at. Lucy took it and looked at it and everything looked good. "What do you normally get uncle Charlie?" Lucy asked hoping to get an idea of what she should get. "I get the steak dinner, it comes how you like it cooked, season steam broccoli, fried potatoes and if you want you can get grilled onion and mushrooms. Then I like to get the chocolate moose pie." Charlie said and Lucy's mouth watered. "I take that but I want my steak to be rare." Lucy said and Charlie smiled as he could see his sister in her. Kim liked her steak like that when they were teens. "You want pie too?" Charlie asked knowing the answer already. "Dean would never turn down pie and so do I." Lucy said and Charlie looked confused. "Dean is from a TV show I love." Lucy said and Charlie nodded and asked her what kind of snacks and drinks Lucy likes, then he was off before the game started. He did call his order in before he left so by the time he got there it be done.
