The story continues…
October 31, 1992 – "Trick or Treat"
"Come on Chip! We're gonna miss out on all the candy." – Dale exclaimed impatiently, as he stood in front of the entryway to the Ranger headquarters in his Flash the Wonder dog costume.
"Golly, Dale sure seems really excited over this Halloween stuff" – Gadget stated, packing her tools while observing Dale's impatient behavior.
"Right you are Gadget love. Haven't seen someone as excited as Dale for free food since, the time I heard they were giving free samples of cheese out at the grocery course, however, you didn't need to dress up in some silly costume to get it." – Monterrey said with an amusing look on his face rubbing his head.
"Right... well, the sooner we go out and do this, the sooner we can get back and start solving cases again." – Chip stated while giving a disapproving look at Dale.
"Gee, well Chip, even Rescue Rangers need to take a break every once and a while too." – Gadget lectured
"Right you are Gadget love, and who knows Chipper, you may actually enjoy yourself." – Monterrey replied in agreeance with Gadget.
"Only time will tell." – Chip mumbled, as the group proceeded out the doorway.
The group of Rangers than proceed to take the Ranger Wing to scout out a neighborhood to canvas for the treats that Dale couldn't stop admiring the thought of.
"Down there! Look, look, that place looks perfect to start" – Dale exclaimed while pointing at a local neighborhood below while jumping up and down in his seat with excitement.
"Alright Gadget, take us down." – Chip said with his arms crossed and a pouting look of disagreement.
Moments later the Ranger Wing landed, Dale couldn't contain his excitement any further and barreled over the side of the place and took off running towards the houses. The rest followed shortly after.
"Isn't this fun Chip!" – Dale said with excitement while eating a peppermint treat he collected.
"Oh yeah Dale… super exciting." – Chip remarked sarcastically as he rolled his eyes at Dale's comment.
"Cheer up Chipper, there will be plenty of cases for us to solve tomorrow." – Monterrey said as he patted Chip on the back while swallowing a chocolate piece whole, patting himself on the stomach in content.
"And besides Chip, how often can Dale have this much fun and not end up getting into trouble." – Gadget added while giving a smile to Chip.
"Yeah… I guess you guys' are right." – Chip replied with a sigh and looking down is disappointment.
An hour of so passed, and as the Rangers reached the end of the neighbor they decided it was time to go back home. They loaded the candy they acquired and headed back to Ranger headquarters to get ready for bed.
"Oh boy that was fun; we should do it again sometime." – Dale exclaimed, bursting through the front door and proceeding to jump over onto the couch turning the TV on.
"Now Dale, we should really try to get some sleep. We have big cases to deal with tomorrow" – Gadget said as she set her toolbox on the kitchen table.
"Oh alright, you guys are never any fun." – Dale said as he crossed his arms pouting, turning the TV off and dragging his bag of candy to bed with him.
"Goodnight guys." – Gadget said yawning as she walked off to her room.
The story continues from Chip 'n Dale's room where Chip and Dale were getting ready for bed.
"So did you have fun tonight Dale?" – Chip questioned Dale as he was getting ready to get into bed.
"Yep, it was great!" – Dale replied with enthusiasm.
"Well that's go-." – Before Chip could finish his sentence, Dale came from behind and hugged Chip.
"What was that for?" – Chip turned and questioned Dale with puzzled look on his face.
"I-I j-just wanted to say thanks, for you know, coming along tonight; it means a lot to me." – Dale said rubbing the back of his head while blushing.
"Well I guess that makes two of us." – Chip replied with a smile than returning to his bed.
"Goodnight Dale." – Chip mumbled as he drifted asleep.
"Goodnight Chip." - Dale replied yawning.
November 1st, 1992 (1:53 in the morning) – "It was only a dream Dale."
As everyone slept with content in their beds, without worry or care; Dale tossed, turned and thrashed in his bed mumbling Chip's name in despair. He eventually forced himself right out of his slumber. Now awake and sobbing, Dale jumps from his bed to check on Chip to ensure he's alright.
"Chip, Chip! Are you alright?" – Dale exclaimed, shaking Chip awake while sobbing.
"W-What's wrong Dale? Why are you crying?" – Chip said rubbing his eyes letting a yawn out.
Without hesitation Dale hugged Chip as hard as he could while still in a sobbing state. Chip being confused and assuming Dale just had a bad dreamed returned the hug to Dale to comfort the distraught chipmunk.
"It's alright Dale. Look, I'm fine, see." – Chip pushed Dale back by his shoulders so he could show that he was fine and unharmed.
Chip seeing how distraught Dale was, led him to grab a tissue for Dale and Chip proceeded to wipe his tears away.
"There, you see Dale, everything is A-Okay. Why don't you say we go back to sleep now?" – Chip said letting out a yawn.
"Goodnight Dale." – Chip mumbled as he lied back down on his pillow drifting back into slumber.
But just as Chip said goodnight, Dale didn't go back to his own bed. Instead, Chip felt a slight thud on the right end of his pillow and turned to see Dale fast asleep next to him. Chip gave a bit disapproved look but didn't fight Dale over it. Instead he decided to go back to bed.
November 1st, 1992 (8:36 in the morning) – "Friends will be friends, brothers will be brothers and dreams will be dreams."
As the sun rays shinned through the window onto Chip and the aroma of cheese omelets filled the room. Chip awoke from his slumber. However, Dale was still asleep and appeared to be tiresome state after his nightmare earlier that morning. Chip then rose from his bed and attempted to wake Dale.
"Dale, it's time for breakfast." – Chip said to Dale as he tapped his shoulder.
Dale groaned and rolled over in discontent.
"Okay Dale, suit yourself." – Chip said as he exited the room proceeding to the kitchen.
"Good morning Chip" – Gadget said as she looked up from the newspaper she was reading.
"Hows about a cheese omelet Chipper. This should wake you up with not a problem at all.– Monterrey chimed in as he placed omelets in front of everyone.
"Say, where's me pally Dale?" – Monterrey questioned, as he turned towards Chip.
"U-Um Dale is still sleeping right now. He had a nightmare last night that really scared him. It took me a while to calm him down. It was probably those stupid comics again" – Chip replied in a concerned tone as he twirled his fork around his plate propping his head up with his right arm.
"Poor lad, those nightmares can really get to yeah. Kinda reminds me of one I had when I spent some time in the Amazon. Kept me up for hours except it turned out to be real in the end." – Monterrey replied as he proceeded to sit down at the table.
Dale then enters the room looking still in a distraught state and appearing exhausted. He then proceeds to sit down next to Chip at the table.
"Good morning Dale. How did you sleep?" – Chip said as he turned his attention towards Dale.
Without a word, Dale looking down at his plate, a single tear feel and followed a sniffle. Dale then got up and left back to his bed looking down at his feet the entire time.
"Golly, he sure seems upset. Maybe you should go check up on him Chip." – Gadget said with a concerned look towards Chip.
"Good idea Gadget, I better go make sure he is okay." – Chip replied as he got up from the table and proceeded towards his and Dale's bedroom.
In the bedroom, Chip entered to Dale who was sitting on Chip's bed holding a picture of Chip and Dale when they were young in his hands crying. Chip closed the door behind him and walked over and sat down next to Dale placing his hand over his shoulder comforting him.
"Is everything alright Dale?" – Chip asked with a concerned tone.
Dale turned and looked at Chip with tears in his eyes, than looked back at the photo.
"Yeah… *sniffle* I guess I was just thinking of our past and that dream I had." – Dale said as he wiped the tears away.
"What did happen in your dream Dale?" – Chip asked in a concerned tone focusing his attention of Dale.
"It's a long story let me tell you." – Dale replied as he prepared himself to explain his dream.
Dales Dream – As a large clap of thunder and a sudden burst of lightening woke Dale from his slumber, he got up to look outside to see the storm. But to Dale's surprise there was no storm at all, the sky was clear and not a cloud in sight. He proceeded to his bed and seen Chip's bed empty. Dale questioned as to where Chip could be. He looked around the ranger's tree house and couldn't find sight of Chip until he heard Chip yell from outside.
"Let me go Fat Cat!" – Chip exclaimed while Fat Cat held him by the scruff of his night gown.
"As you wish" – Fat Cat whipped Chip as if he was a baseball and sent him hurtling through the front door onto the living room floor tearing his night gown and putting gashes and splinters along the backside of his arm.
"I want this pesky rodent dealt with for the last time. Get him!" – Fat Cat ordered as his goons ran towards Chip.
"Leave him alone." – Dale exclaimed as he rolled up his shirt sleeves marching towards Fat Cat.
"Oh, it's you again. I am tired of you pesky rodents getting in the way of my plans." – Fat Cat said this with a degree of anger as he back handed Dale sending him to fall back next to the sofa.
Dale lying on the floor unconscious and the other rangers having no idea what was going on left Chip feeling hopeless in this situation.
"I want this to be quite. The last thing I need is anymore interruptions from those blasted rescue rangers." – Fat Cat stated passing a rag to Mole.
As Mole shoved the rag in Chips mouth, the horrific screams of agony baffled out of Chip as the goons beat every inch of his body. The muffled screaming however, eventually stopped as Chip lied there.
"Alright, alright that is enough. I think I got my point across." – Fat Cat said in glee as he proceeded out the door with his goons following behind him.
Dale finally came too, shook his head and got up and stumbled around. He eyes then came focused on Chip, who laid there, blood covering the floor and him. Wounds covered his entire body, and clumps of fur torn off. Dale without hesitation let out an ear piercing screech as he rushed to Chips side. Holding Chips head on his knee, attempting to stop the bleeding while tearing up. Chip opened his eyes and looked at Dale with small smile.
"Dale it's alright, I'll be fine. It's time to let me go." – Chip whispered as he drifted asleep holding Dale's hand.
"No Chip! Chip!" – Dale shouted while crying hysterically as Chip slowly passed away in his arms.
The Dreams Ends…
As Dale finished telling the story of his dream; Chip turned away from Dale attempting to hold back tears. Chip however, couldn't hold them back anymore and letting it out. The two comforted each other. Truth be told, Chip was not sad about the dream, as he knew it was not true but was sad of memory that it reminded him of. A memory of when Chip 'n Dale were young and how Chip would always have to defend his younger brother Dale from the trouble he would get into. Dale being the goofball and immature chipmunk he was would ultimately end up getting him into trouble. The particular memory was when Chip 'n Dale were walking home together and an argument broke out between the two. Dale ran ahead to from Chip after becoming distracted, but due to Dale's absent mindedness it ended up getting Dale hit by a car. Chip watched in horror as Dale screamed in agony, blood and cuts covered his body. Chip felt so helpless that day. All he could remember was the words he told Dale that day 'I'll never let you go.' That was the day Chip promised to never let Dale out of his sights again and to protect him at all costs.
Chip wiping his eyes turned his attention to Dale.
"But Dale, it was only a dream. It's not real. Do you remember that saying that Dad always used to tell us?" – Chip said as he smiled looking at Dale getting his attention.
"No what's that?" – Dale asked while wiping his tears away.
"Friends will be friends, brothers will be brothers and dreams will be dreams. He said this as a reminder of how things are, they're just that. Nothing more, nothing less." – Chip explained as he placed his paw on dales shoulder in encouragement.
Dale then gave one of his iconic goofy looking smiles and hugged Chip than proceed out of the bedroom.
"Where are you going?" – Chip asked with a confused expression.
"There's a new episode of Flash the Wonder Dog on right now." – Dale said with a smile as he ran down towards the TV.
"So much for the heart to heart conversation." – Chip said shrugging his shoulders, placing the photo back on his desk, grabbing his hat and proceeding down stairs.
November 8th, 1992 (20:00 in the night) – "Chip's Injury"
It had been one whole week since Dale had experienced one of his nightmares. He had gone back from sleeping in Chip's bed to his own and was able to tend to the regular missions without unusual problems. However, there was key detail that Dale unwillingly left out while he described his dream to Chip. That detail was the calendar in his dream. That date circled was November 9th, 1992 and in that circled spot was written 12:51 am. This detail that was left out was the matter of life and death for Chip.
Chip was writing in his journal about the day's adventures, and all of the strenuous efforts that everyone had put in today. As Chip drifted off in writing chapters among chapters in his journal, Dale and the others were enjoying their relaxation as they all watched television. Gadget, sitting next to Dale turns and positions her to ask him a question.
"Dale?" – Gadget asked in a questionable tone, tapping Dale's left shoulder.
"Yes Gadget?"- Dale turned in an instant with a look of both confusion and one of question.
"Has Chip ever taken a day off and just relaxed?" – Gadget asked.
"Well… let me think." – Dale pondered at the question dazing off scratching his chin. He then turned back to Gadget and replied wholeheartedly.
"No, he hasn't since we started this before we met you guys." – Dale expressed in a serious tone.
"Gee, I just think sometimes even Chip deserves a break from work." – Gadget said turning her attention back to the television with a slight sigh.
Chip then enters the room, looking exhausted and frustrated he set his hat on the coffee table and sat down next to Dale letting out a sigh of relief.
"Say Chip, maybe we should take the day off tomorrow. I think everyone could use a well-deserved day off after today."– Gadget said as she looks at Chip, who was still gazing at the TV looking expressionless.
"Chip?"- Gadget called out to Chip again. This time Dale nudged Chip's side, causing Chip to wince immediately grabbing his side.
"What'd you that for!" – Chip grumbled in discontent while raising his voice at Dale.
"I was getting your attention dummy; Gadget was asking you a question." – Dale said pouting, raising his voice slightly to Chip.
"Are you alright Chip? – Gadget said sounding concerned as she seen the discomfort in Chip's facial expressions.
"I'm fine; I just need to get some rest. And to answer your question, if anyone wants the day off tomorrow they can have it but I'm going to the police stations to look for new cases." – Chip said as he grabbed his hat and left the room still holding the right side of him that was causing him discomfort.
As Chip proceeded to the entry way of his and Dale's room he opened the door and as he entered he buckled over in pain, dropping to his knees and let out a slight whine. Tears caused by the pain emerged from Chip. As Chip had fell to his knees a slight thud echoed throughout most of the tree house.
"Golly, what was that?" – Gadget jumped slightly in her seat as the bang caught her off guard. She turned to Monterrey who just shrugged in confusion as he didn't hear the noise, paying close attention to what was on the television.
"Dale, maybe you should go check on Chip." – Gadget asked as she turned to get Dale's attention.
"I'm sure he's fine but all go since it's a commercial break."- Dale replied, with an unamused expression as he got up and headed towards his and Chip's room.
As Dale made his way to the room he noticed a shadow in the doorway. As he walked closer to the room entrance he seen Chip on the floor in buckled over in pain crying quietly to himself while trying to make an effort to stand up. Dale immediately let out a gasp and called for the others, rushing to Chip's side.
"Chip, are you okay!" – Dale said in fear, placing his hand on his brothers back while kneeling, attempting to comfort him.
Gadget and Monterrey rushed over to Chip's aide with looks of fear and worry.
"We need to get him in the bed so we can examine his injuries." – Gadget said
"Right you are Gadget love. On the count of three, Chipper. We're all going to lift you to your bed." Monterrey said as he positioned himself to assist in lifting Chip to his bed.
"One… two… three!" – Monterrey said slightly raising his voice as he counted to three preparing to lift Chip up.
Chip let out a cry in agony as Monterrey, Dale and Gadget lifted Chip over to his bed laying him down gently. As Chip was rested on his bed, Dale removed his hat and coat and set it on Chip's desk knocking his journal on the ground open faced down. Gadget than had proceeded to examine Chip for visible injuries.
"Golly, there's a lot of bruising around the chest and abdominal area. There also seems to be an open wound on your right side. Dale, I need a first-aid kit with a sewing kit. Monterrey, I need you to get me some pain killers from the bathroom." – Gadget ordered as she examined Chip for further injuries.
Chip lied on his bed with his eyes closed trying to control his breathing and minimizing the pain.
"You're going to be alright Chip." – Gadget said softly as she pushed Chips hair back with her right hand.
Monterrey being the first one back to the room with the pain killers, hands them to Gadget.
"Where's Dale? I need that first-aid kit now." – Gadget said looking at Monterrey than looking at the empty doorway to the room.
"I'm coming I'm com-." – Dale said as he tripped over Chip's journal running up to Gadget.
Dale gets up and walks over to Chip's side, sitting next to him holding his paw. Monterrey than focuses his attention on Gadget.
"Say Gadget, how do suppose Chipper got this bad of beating if we were with him the entire time." – Monterrey pondered.
Than Monterrey remembered that Chip wasn't wearing his seat belt when the Ranger Wing crashed earlier that day during a poor take off due to high winds. But he knew that even if Chip did hurt himself, he wouldn't admit it right away because he knew that the job had to be done first.
"I bet it was from that take-off crash we had this morning!" – Monterrey said in confidence as he connected the two instances in his head.
"You know what Monty, I bet you're right. He wasn't wearing his seat belt after all." – Gadget said in agreeance to the theory as she stood up.
"We should really let him get some rest now." – Gadget said as she walked over to the bedroom door.
"Are you coming Dale?" – Gadget asked as she turned her attention to Dale.
"U-um, I'll catch up with you guys in a minute." - Dale said to Gadget as she nodded and left the room closing the door behind her.
Dale started to whimper at the sight of his brother's condition. Tears began to fall from Dale's face, one of them striking Chip's nose causing Chip to open his eyes. Chip held out his hand to Dale, Dale grasping it firmly.
"I-I'm so-" – Dale tried to mutter sorry but was stopped by Chip.
"Shh Dale, it's alright. It's not your fault." – Chip said faintly as he drifted in and out of consciousness as the pain killers started to set in.
As Chip felt weaker, and slowly drifted to sleep the grip Chip had on Dale's hand weakened and released. Dale gave Chip a slight kiss on his forehead before turning to exit the room. He then noticed the journal on the floor. Dale picked up the journal and a photo fell out of the back sleeve. Dale picked up the photo and turned it around to see it was a photo of him and Chip posing for a photo when they were young. Before slipping the photo back into the journal he noticed a faded caption on the back of the photo in Chip's hand writing that read: "Brothers for life, Friends forever. Through thick and thin we may not always see eye to eye but my love for you my brother is eternal and will never dissolve." Dale, fighting as he held back tears just grinned in admiration. He set the photo back and journal down and left downstairs.
Hours had gone by now, it was nearly 10:00 pm. Gadget said her goodnight and left for bed, Monterrey shortly followed and then Dale. As they drifted into their slumbers, Dale lied awake reciting the in-famous lines that his brother had wrote on the back of that photo. As Dale slowly drifted asleep he felt content and at peace.
Shortly after 12:40 am, a crash of thunder and a flash of lightening awoke Chip to his feet. Chip still slightly under the medications effects did not feel much pain but was coherent enough to comprehend his surroundings. Chip glared out his bedroom window in surprise.
"What… How is that-? – Chip stopped in his tracks thinking to himself quietly.
As Chip pondered and questioned the possibilities, he looked out to the sky and seen it as clear with not a single cloud in sight. Chip had to get to the bottom of what made the appearance of lightning and thunder and walked down to the front door opening and was caught in surprise.
"Fat Cat! I should have known it was you all along" – Chip yelled in frustration as he caught Fat Cat off guard.
"Aw, you are incisive for an incompetent rodent. Care to join us as we play a little trick on your friend?" – Fat Cat said in a sinister tone with an evil grin.
"So you're the own giving my brother nightmares!" – Chip exclaimed in pure rage, while turning red in the face a clenching his fists.
"Brother, hmm, is that what you call him? Well thank you, for once again ruining one of my perfectly methodical plans. – Fat Cat said as he gestured at his three henchmen.
Chip then remembered back to the dream described by Dale and immediately attempted to get help but was too late. Fat Cat's goons grabbed a hold of Chip by the collar of his nightgown.
"Can we kill him yet, Mr. Fat Cat?" – Mole questioned, showing excitement to the idea of harming Chip.
Chip then in fast thinking bit Mole's hand that had a grip around him. Mole yelped and threw Chip, sending him flying through the open doorway on to the floor. Chip lied there for a second before coming to but was too late. Fat Cat's goons had already started beating him vigorously and violently Chipped screamed in horror.
"Put a rag in his mouth, I don't want the others waking up." – Fat Cat ordered, as the other shoved a rag into Chips mouth.
As the beating continued Chip bleed onto the floor; falling in and out of consciousness.
"Alright, alright that is enough. Let's get out of here." – Fat Cat ordered.
As Fat Cat and his men left, they left Chip still and lifeless, his nightgown torn, bleeding from his head and nose. Bruises and cuts covered his body. Than in an instant the wind caused the open front door to slam causing a shudder and echo heard throughout the tree house. Dale was woken from this noise and decided to investigate it. He glimpsed at Chip's bed to see it empty and ran down stairs. The first sight of Chip by Dale caused a heart wrenching scream that could have carried for miles. Monterrey and Gadget sprung to their feet and rushed to find out what was wrong. Their sights shocked them, Dale holding his brother's head in his lap trying to stop the bleeding was soaked in Chip's blood. It had almost looked like a murder scene.
"Oh my gosh Chip, hang in there!" – Gadget said shaking frantically as she got clothes to stop the bleeding.
Chip slowly glimpsed at his friends as they rushed to save him as he blacked out. It was pitch black darkness inside Chip's mind. Then a bright light was seen in the distance calling his name. Chip turned and responded:
"Yes? Who's there? – Chip asked as he walked towards the light.
"It's not your time to come home yet Chip." – The voice called out to him in an echoed monotone.
"But I don't understand, why did this happen? Where am I?" – Chip asked frantically as questions filled his mind.
"Do not worry my son; all of your questions will be answered in given time." – The voice called out to Chip as the light glittered before disappearing.
All then had gone to darkness.
November 22nd, 1992 (11:30 am) – "May the Bad Times Hurt but Let them not Hurt You; for as good strives over evil let not the dwelling of past impact your future or cloud your judgement."
It had been two weeks since Chip's accident. The Ranger's after the first week returned to normal operations; all of the Rangers assumed the role of partial leader and conducted their normal daily tasks. For the first week, Dale sat patiently by his brother's side never letting his hand for a second. Hoping, praying that he would recover from the tragedy. But as Dale's hope dried, so did his patients and he returned on the second week to assisting in missions. Chip then had attempted to stand on his own but was unable too. For the prolonged laying down had resulted the muscles in his legs to depreciate quite radically and would involve him needing weeks of physiotherapy to make a proper recovery. Than just as he attempted to lie back down in his bed, he noticed his journal open on his desk and reached to grab it. At his surprise he had seen that Dale had been writing in his journal for the past two weeks of recent missions and the process of recovery for Chip. Dale's handwriting was distinctively messy, so Chip was sure it was him. He tossed the book on his desk and looked up to see Dale standing in front of him blushing with a slight smile.
"So you seen that I was writing in your notebook." – Dale said in an embarrassed tone.
Chip just starred with no emotion and without saying a word, drifting in and out of his own thoughts.
"I'm glad you're awake, I was worried there for a while that you weren't going to wake up." – Dale said in sense of relief.
Chip still sitting there with no response, after 30 seconds had gone by in silence he turned his attention to Dale.
"Dale, pass me my coat please." – Chip asked.
"Um sure; here you go." – Dale replied in question while passing Chip his jacket.
Chip than unzipped an inner pocket and pulled out a key.
"Here. Open that top drawer on my desk." – Chip said, passing the key to Dale to open the desk drawer.
Dale opened the desk drawer and pulled out a journal. Gesturing it out to Chip to grab he declined.
"I want you to have it." – Chip said in a soft voice while attempting to make a smile to Dale.
Dale was not sure how to react and simply said the words of:
"Thank you." – Dale replied.
Chip smirked at Dale and gestured for him to sit down next to him; Dale than sat down next to Chip.
"Dale." – Chip said. "I want you to know that I am grateful to have you as my brother. We may not always see eye to eye but-." Dale had then chimed in to finish the statement.
"But my love for you my brother is eternal and will never dissolve." – Dale responded with a large smile.
The two embraced each other with a hug, shedding only tears of joy; the friendship they held would last forever.
The End.
(Let me know if I should continue this. I felt this was a good stopping place but i'm open to suggestions.)
