Chapter One
Her nervous fingers twitch as she squeezes the life changing plastic in her hands.
It was positive.
No mistaking it either, this was the fifth test she took this morning.
She realized something was up when she inhaled the first scent of breakfast this morning. The eggs Barry cooked alone made her want to vomit.
Even now she gags, the stench of sizzling yolk still stuck in her nostrils.
She braces herself for the worst as she hovers over the toilet. "No, no,no." This was the absolute worst part. The vomit quickly expels from her throat, silencing her desperate pleas.
Moments after the dry heaving subsides she slouches back against the wall, sighing.
That made three times she threw up in the past hour.
Frankly she was sick of being sick.
With the test enclosed in her fist, she tries to calm herself down, ecretly hoping that for the fifth time today she was wrong.
Mixed emotions erratically clouded her mind.
There was a baby. Inside of her.
A smaller human. It needed food, diapers, clothing, a car seat, affection, love.
I mean ofcourse she loved Barry but were they really ready to share that with a baby.
Were they ready for a kid? Was the team ready for one? The flash?
"Hold on Iris, pump the breaks. Youre getting way too ahead of yourself," she warns.
Pushing those thoughts to the back of her mind, she focuses on the when and where's rather than why's and how's.
She repeatedly questions herself.
They were careful weren't they?
"Think when and where's the last time?" She whispers, staring into space.
"Tahiti!" She answers out loud for herself, "It's a magical place," she says, mimicking the words of their tour guide with an eye roll.
Great.
Face palming, she counts the months in her head and checks her feminine stash. Yea, it all made sense now.
She quickly dails her husband.
The ringing seems to take an eternity.
"Iris? You okay?"
"Barry I need to talk to you."
"Uhh, Iris I'm a little occupied at the moment- Ugghhh Grodd put that down! Oww! Iris?"
She's silent, frozen.
"Iris!" He yells.
"Huh?"
"Can it wait?" He asked.
She pauses for a moment.
Of course.
He was the flash and he had flash things to do.
"Of course it can babe. See you at home."
He can instantly sense the uneasiness in her voice.
"Okay, Be home soon, I promise." He says reassuringly.
"Love you."
"I love you too-...Not you Grodd!"
Shaking her head, she looks at the pregnancy test once more before hanging up the phone.
…..
Later on Iris goes home to prepare for dinner and the big reveal.
The shades are closed and the lights are set low.
She's wearing his treasured black lace slip that fits her in all the right places. Her shoulder length curly hair is identical to their time in Tahiti and she has on his favorite toe nail polish.
Racer Red.
She checks her makeup one last time before making her way to the kitchen.
On the set dining room table the Chinese food is sitting at the center and the wine is sitting to the right.
When she hears footsteps approaching she quickly tries to light some candles, only to have them blown out by Barry's speed.
"Barry!"
When he sees her pouting he turns around to see why.
"Ouhh," he says, through grit teeth, "sorry Iris, I didn't know you were lighting candles. What's the occasion?" He looks at his phone, clueless.
"Well," she struts over to him, wrapping her arms around his neck, "I have a surprise to tell you." She says playfully.
"Me too actually-"
She desperately lunges for him, immediately cutting him off with a kiss.
It was passionate, heavy and hungry.
He cradles either side of her face, succumbing to her sweet, charmful assault.
After a few minutes she can feel him start to pull away so urgently, she latches onto him, defiantly deepening the kiss.
"Eh Ahem." Someone coughs clearing their throat.
Iris immediately pulls away from her husband and her cheeks begin to rose.
Barry Swiftly steps in front of her, partially blocking her from any views.
"Ralph," she tucks her hair behind her ear, "how are you? You're here, in my home. What a surprise," she stumbles on, "You look great."
"Iris you look-"
He's cut off by Barry's deadly glare.
"I'll just go over here." He moves away.
"Good idea." Barry says, "go."
He turns back to Iris, "Sorry, I was going to tell you."
"Right." She sighs, covering herself.
"Is that pork fried rice I smell?" Ralph excitingly asked.
They both ignore him.
"Hold on," Barry says with an index finger. He rushes upstairs to get her robe and without hesitation he drapes it around her.
"It's okay babe, I'm not feeling well anyway, I'm just going to head up.." She starts to take the robe off but he puts it back on her.
"Stay," he looks at the Chinese food, "eat with us." Taking a note of the romantic setting he frowns,"Please."
"You and Ralph can have the Chinese food. Really it's okay."
He pauses.
Barry Allen had learned a few things after being with Iris or any women for that matter.
Rule number one, whenever she says it's okay, it most certainly never is.
When she turns to leave, he grabs her hand, pulling her in the kitchen.
"Look," he runs a hand over his face, "I'm sorry. Ralph has mold in his apartment. I wanted to tell you earlier but it slipped my mind."
Iris peeks around him to look on the couch. She lowers her voice, "He couldn't stay anywhere else? Like literally anywhere else?"
"Hey you know I can hear you two!" Ralph adds, "and Iris I'm very offended!"
"We don't care!" They say in unison.
Barry lowers his voice, "Look it was a long game of rock, paper, scissors and I lost." He sighs, "I can speed him to a hotel if that's what you want?"
Iris knows Barry. He's a family man, he doesn't want to do this. She can clearly see it in his eyes.
"No it's okay but you keep him company tonight," her face turns up, "I don't want him doing anything weird."
Barry frowns. " Will do," he slightly embraces her, "now what did you want to talk to me about?"
She shakes her head, "Nothing important."
"You sure?"
She nods. "Yea Barry."
"Cuz earlier." His flirtatious grin widens as he grabs onto her robe.
"Well,I-" ,her mouth closes just as quickly as it opens, Ralph's snoring drowning her out.
"Uggghh." Barry makes a move for the couch but Iris halts him.
"Barry, Barry, It's okay."
He rolls his eyes at the sound of those two words again.
"Really," she gives him a quick peck before making her way upstairs."Don't kill him."
"No promises!" Barry yells over the loud snoring,
"Ralph! Ralph!"
"Ohh ouhhuh? Huh?" Ralph says sleepily.
"Keep it down, you'll wake the neighbors."
"Right sorry," he stands, " Sooo which side of the couch do you want?"
"Ralph."
"Yes."
Barry looks toward the ceiling, "Why are you naked?"
"It's the only way I can sleep. Plus doctors say…"
Barry tunes out the rest of his sentence.
"Sorry Iris," he mutters under his breath.
He was going to kill him, right after he burned the couch.
